We came here to celebrate our 7-year anniversary. We are new to the region and did not expect there would be such fine dining in the area. We really enjoyed our experience here and look forward to coming back. We were met with champagne and multiple "happy anniversary" wishes. Our server (Lee) and manager/partner (Brad) truly went above and beyond to make sure our night was memorable. For our first course we had: Artisan Salad: it was very refreshing and had great textures from different varieties of seasonal vegetables. Loved the pear vinaigrette, such a light touch and not overpowering. Squab: The meat was marinated with juniper. It was very tasty. Both my husband and I never had squab before so we did not know what to expect. I would say the meat taste like duck and quail mixed. It was very tender and lots of flavor. Red wine raspberry was such a good dressing to pair with gamey meat like squab. However raspberries were not glazed which feel a bit unfinished. Foie Gras torchon: the foie gras was cooked perfectly, but the presentation could have been improved. Pickled rhubarb was placed on top on the dedicated foie gras. They did emphasize their brioche is on the dry side but I found it was too dry - a bit unpleasant. We were also gifted a treat from Brad of the sweet corn veloute. It was very creamy and flavorful! Sweetness from the corn and savoy from speck. Enjoyed the presentation and the taste of that dish. A great dish to end our first corse. For our main course we had: Duck paired with fennel and confit potatoes served with red wine-cherry reduction. The duck was perfectly seared, with crispy skin and tender interior. Fennel was very sweet and caramelized on the edge. A lovely combination. Steak Gnudi: the steak was very juicy, and the gnudi was creamy. A lot of the textures in the dish (the steak, the gnudi, the carrots) were similar to one another. I wish the carrots were a bit firmer to bring our more texture and complexity of the dish, but the flavor was great and comforting. I feel this dish is more like a beef stew to me. We had our fill at the end of the night with three desserts!! Two of them were complimentary, again as a nice gesture to celebrate our anniversary. The desserts included: Caramel creme brûlée: what a fun way to eat creme brûlée, and certainly not traditional! The top layer was caramelized sugar with caramel pearls with meringue. Below that was a layer of custard flavored with salted caramel, and a thick coating of salted caramel at the very bottom. I do have to say the salted caramel was VERY salty. We enjoyed the first layer with light whipped cream and the custard itself, but when you dig into the salted caramel part it proved to be too salty (the dessert became a salty sauce). The presentation was pretty, the custard itself was very flavorful, but the base of the dessert was overpowering. The custard didn't have much vanilla flavor to it either (though, again, it's a salted caramel one so it may have been overpowered by that). Affogato - we were split on how much each of us liked this. My husband enjoyed it, but it wasn't my favorite. I felt the espresso was more like an Americano, and the ice cream was already melted before it came to our table so it was too soupy to eat. My husband on the other hand enjoyed the flavors and texture combining the chunks of the rocky road, the creaminess of the ice cream/espresso mix, and the hard biscotti. I suppose it's a matter of preference! I also thought the biscotti were over-baked but my husband felt it married well with the texture of the affogato. The pavlova was our fav dessert of the night. Chewy-crispy texture on top, soft marshmallow texture inside, and a crunchy crisp texture around the edges. That's three completely different textures in one single bite! Not to mention the tangy peach sauce balance out the sweetness of the egg whites. I wanted another but was extremely full by then! Overall it was an amazing experience and a remarkable night for us. They also update their menus regularly. We can't wait to come back and see what they do to satisfied our palate. read more

We have been going there for the last 2 1/2 years. Ryan the manager was excellent. The atmosphere was great and the food was "to die for". We returned for our anniversary this year and everything has changed. Found out Ryan was no longer there and that explained a lot. The atmosphere was different. Not the attentive service. The hostess was not in proper attire and the food was definitely not up to par with what we experienced before. My husband's steak tasted like they dumped the whole salt shaker on it. Never have had a bad meal, here. This last time, service was rather slow but still way above any normal restaurant. I had the filet, it was cooked just right and seasoned well. I went here for dinner recently and it was a pleasant experience. I ordered a penne and thought it was fantastic. I would've loved to eat more of it but I had almost completely filled up on bread beforehand. The lighting here is weird. Once you adjust it is not an issue, but it can be somewhat awkward at first. My biggest qualm here is that the servers feel like they're trying too hard. If a joke isn't funny you don't have to laugh at it. I expect good service, but also for it to be genuine. read more

Brad and his staff earned themselves 4 new loyal customers. I called a few days ahead to make a reservation and mentioned we'd be celebrating my friends getting engaged that same afternoon. When we arrived on Saturday evening after my friend had proposed, we were treated to a complimentary toast by Brad. There was a handwritten card from him waiting at our table, as well as custom menus congratulating my friends on their engagement. To some these touches may seem small, but to the four of us, it was truly above and beyond, especially in a time when my friends cannot celebrate their new engagement with most of their family members due to living far away and the pandemic. This is about as good as it gets for the city of Elkhart and it is priced accordingly. For me, it would be a special occasion place or somewhere nice to bring a client. I dined here with my family celebrating my birthday since we had never been and love to try new places. We had a pretty average wedge salad, the blue cheese dressing had little flavor. The other appetizer we loved - the gnocchi. For my money the gnocchi is the best dish on the menu. The main dishes were all pretty good though the carbonara and salmon dishes stood out. I had the lamb shank and the flavor was good, but I feel it was slightly overcooked. We shared a deconstructed s'more for dessert and it was ok. read more

What innovative, elegant, beautiful tastes Artisan has! I actually came last year in September but due to some mix up with checks and also being real pricey for barely anything on the plate I decided not to come again. However last Thursday I joined the Michiana cork and fork group for their monthly local restaurant patronage and it was at Artisan. Their flavor has not changed; still refined and artistically plated. We had a special menu of 5 courses and I thought I would be hungry because they were "small" plates but was pleasantly surprised to be full by the end! I can not say what portions are if it was just normal orders though. We had the best salad of heirloom tomatoes with grilled ricotta cheese. But the highlight of this dish was a balsamic pearl! It was small bursts of vinegar so unique! 2nd we had a handmade fettuccini with a bolognese sauce that was just right in flavor. Not too rich and a hint of sweetness topped with ricotta. The pasta was perfectly cooked and had a chewy texture. 3rd was shrimp in top of a cauliflower purée. Omg that purée I could have eaten alone! It tasted creamy and I know there was no cheese but there was a similar taste in it. Shrimp was a rad overcooked but yummy and beautifully plated. 4th was a cut of beef that was cooked a perfect medium rare. The picture does not do it justice as it was candlelit and my phone just made it look black. There was a glaze/sauce that was rich in savory flavor with mushrooms that perfected the steak. A fingerling potato and couple of snap peas really completed the dish! The last course was a flourless chocolate cake and it was pure bliss eating it. I must say the mango house made sherbert was excellent but it was odd to me to pair with the cake. I think preference wise I would have liked a vanilla gelato or something similar to counter with it instead. Other dishes were from their tasting menu from last September. Of all the courses the Salmon really is what I can remember the most out of all. Cooked perfectly crisp top moist and perfectly seasoned. This is def. a must try for special occasions! read more

My husband found Artisan in his search for a nice restaurant to celebrate my birthday while we were in the area. The service from the team at Artisan was beyond any expectations . Upon arrival, each employee was aware of my birthday, and I received a personalized menu, and a hand-written welcome/thank you note from Brad, the managing partner. Our server, Carissa, was friendly and knowledgeable, helping us to appreciate the nuances of each dish we considered. I also valued the attention to safe service; all employees were properly wearing their masks, and sanitizer was provided on each table. I felt very comfortable, despite not having dined out for months. We were excited about the unique cocktails, and were not disappointed. I had a seasonal bourbon cocktail, with fall spices, pear syrup, and soda. It was so delicious! When Brad indicated that they would be removing that selection because they were at the end of their infused bourbon (everything is made in-house), I quickly ordered another to ensure I got the last drop! My husband had their signature Manhattan, and enjoyed it as well. We ended up skipping wine altogether as we enjoyed our spirits. For appetizers, we chose the pork cheek and the crab cake. The pork cheek was smoky and tender. We are sometimes hesitant about crab cakes away from the coast, but this offering was lump meat, no filler, with a jalapeño relish that added an unexpected flash of heat with the sweet crab. We were off to a great start! We were challenged to narrow down our entree choices; everything sounded delicious. I was hungry, so opted for the heartier lamb ragu. It was deep in flavor and had "Parisian" gnocch (no potato -- who knew?), which were light little pillows of Parmesan that melted in your mouth. My husband ordered the wild boar tenderloin, and we agreed it was the most tender meat either of us had ever eaten! It was our favorite item of the night ( Yes, he shared...it was my birthday!). If this is a recurring item, we will drive the 90 minutes to visit again, just to eat that boar (and drink the bourbon!). Our experience continued with desserts that were as beautiful as they were delicious. We chose the affogoto and the creme brûlée . The creme brûlée was a layered concoction different from any other I've had, and particularly good. This is easily among our top 5 restaurant meals ever, probably top 3. Their combination of exquisite food and high service level will make Artisan a destination for the future! So, my original review from October 2015 has mysteriously disappeared (although my original pictures remain). Fortunately, that experience left a lasting impression should it is easy to recreate! Original Review - October 2015 My husband and I made our first trip to Artisan during Elkhart Dining Days. We had made a reservation expecting it to be busy on a weekend night. We arrived on time and were seated in the back corner booth - perfect location for a cozy dinner. We were immediately brought water and then nothing...for quite some time...long enough that my husband was debating if he should go to the bar to order our drinks (there were 3 other tables seated at the time so the place was definitely not busy). Still nothing...finally, someone brings us some bread and butter (still haven't ordered drinks). My husband does eventually go to the bar to see if we can order drinks. The bartender says that our server will be right with us. He joins me back at the booth and then we proceed to hear a couple of servers and hostess arguing about whose table it is and why we weren't being served. While the argument is taking place, the owner, Kurt Janowsky, stops by to asks how things are (never noticing that we just have bread and water), but doesn't stick around for us to even explain that we are still waiting to order drinks. Finally, our server comes over and, to her credit, is very apologetic, and blames the hostess for not telling her that she had a table seated (seriously - not hard to notice in a nearly empty restaurant). About 45 minutes into our visit, we finally had our cocktails (and thankfully, they were good!). Once we had menus, we reviewed and opted for the three courses for $30 a person. We ordered the squash soup and Artisan salad to start. The soup was served table side and was great and the salad was good as well. My husband ordered the bison short rib which was rich and flavorful and I opted for the bavette (fancy word for flank steak) which came with a great sauce. The sauce was so good, I asked if it was possible to have a little extra on the side - had I known what a commotion this would cause, I never would have asked. The server had to check with the chef, who originally said no and then changed his mind and said yes, but they would need to charge me for it which I said was fine. It was obvious our server was uncomfortable with the whole exchange and eventually brought the extra sauce, apologized and said there would be no charge. Fortunately, the food was great and somewhat made up for the comedy of errors. Dessert was the deconstructed s'more and coconut sorbet with chocolate cake - again, both were good. Even based on the odd first experience, I would rate the food as 4-5 stars. The service was just off and ruined the atmosphere a bit. Follow-up Review, October 2016 Fast forward a year and I'm back at Artisan this time with a girlfriend for dinner. Timing was right and I opted for the Elkhart Dining Days menu with the Artisan salad, short rib and autumn creme brulee. My friend ordered the shrimp cocktail to share, squash soup, filet and deconstructed s'more. She ordered her filet well and our server didn't blink and the kitchen didn't squawk and her steak came out to her liking perfectly.. We had a lot of the same odd-type service issues as the original visit. The hostess wasn't very friendly and once seated we sat with water our waters for quite awhile until we were finally able to order drinks. Again, our server was great and the other issues where out of control (she did bring the wrong appetizer, but that was easily corrected). Again, great food - iffy, spotty and odd service. We had a great experience! It was my father in law's birthday. We didn't have a reservation but the manager got us a table. That was really appreciated. The steak gnudi was excellent and so was the other steak. The house reisling was delicious. And the coconut/rhubarb dessert had a birthday candle in it! And they comped the birthday dessert. The one and only time I dined at Artisan, it was a delight. We have a corporate dinner each year. Normally we go to Granger or Mishawaka but in October of 2021 we decided to stay local to Elkhart. We had a private room and two of our own serves. There were 16 of us. The room was dim but not too dark, the tables were decorated nice and basic. Not too much clutter, a very sleek look. The ceilings in this room were high and had beautiful wall textures. The menus lit up and very unique to the vibe of the room. I've never seen that style before so it was pretty cool. The appetizers were good. I was surprised after the first course the chef brought us a bites worth of a magnificat fig of some sort. I think it had bacon on it. Then after that they brought out new silverware and napkins. The entire time or servers were professional and really fun. A few times they were laughing with the whole group. We had our own exits for those guest who smoked so that was a little bit more exclusive feeling. Overall, we had a blast. The food was great and staff was a pleasure. Beacon of hope and promise for the New Elkhart Food Scene. Well if there wasn't one before there sure is now. At no point during my visit did I have any notion that this was the opening week! The staff was as perfectly seasoned as the food. I was alone and traveling for work so I ponied up to the bar. Perfect place for a solo diner. The bar staff was welcoming and offered just the right amount of insight into the food. Choosing one dish from the menu proved far too difficult so I absolutely had to go for the chefs tasting menu. 6 course because the 9 might have just been too gluttonous. My next visit will absolutely require the 9 course. I posted photos. The scallops and the bison were the clear winners but the food deserves 7 out of 5 stars from the yelp rankings. Elkhart, embrace this place. Love it and there will be more. Culinary scenes start in cities one visionary at a time. Artisan is one heck of a foundation to build from. read more

I don't understand how this restaurant has anything LESS than a perfect rating! This is a HIGH class HIGH quality place to DINE (not eat, DINE)!! The building is beautiful and well decorated on the inside and the bathrooms too (I have truly never seen a prettier bathroom). The food is exquisite!!! I have never had such divine food ever except at Corndance Tavern. This place has a much more personal touch though than ANY restaurant I have ever been in. They come every 5 minutes to check on you and refill your drinks, so your glass is never empty. They take away your silverware and give you new silverware between every course! They definitely seem to be "reservation only" but I didn't know, and they allowed us to dine before the dinner rush with reservations all came in (so glad we eat around 5pm!). It is also, clearly, a "no kids restaurant" so if your kids throw food and throw fits, you better get a baby sitter (which I like!! Thankfully my daughter is old enough to be well behaved, but still, she won't come with us next time). My daughter told everyone it was my birthday, so the manager wrote a hand-written birthday card for me and presented it while we were eating and then they gave us one of our desserts for free (I never even asked!!). We have been wanting to try Artisan for a while now and decided to set a reservation and come celebrate our wedding anniversary here. They sat us in a booth which was cozy and comfortable, and had a sweet card waiting for us. Our waitress was amazing, going over the menu and discussing my severe food allergy with the chef to make sure what I ordered was safe for me. I ended up with gnocchi and amish chicken (off the bone). It was delicious! My husband ordered the scallops and was pleased as well. For dessert we decided to try their take on strawberry shortcake and although I was already stuffed from dinner, I was happy I tried it. It was perfect. The only reason I couldn't give 5 stars is because we were literally sweating sitting there. It was so hot inside the restaurant it was actually kind of distracting. Luckily, they kept coming and refilling our water glasses often. I also was hoping to see some lighter menu options that went better with the warm season, but my food allergy may have played a part in me having to choose such a heavy dish. If I could give this place 6 stars I would. We moved from Houston, Texas last year and have missed amazing food but this place trumps any restaurant I have been to before. The crab cake and gnocchi were amazing appetizer's and a great way to start the meal. You can't go wrong with either of these. I got the duck and my wife got the chicken and both were out of this world. We joked that we didn't even know chicken could taste that good. The dessert platter was amazing. It wasn't on the menu but the manager gave it to us on the house. And it was amazing of him! Everything tasted perfect and there wasn't anything we would have changed. We were so full when we left so even though portion sizes weren't huge, we couldn't finish it all. Go to this restaurant.
