Back then, we would also always go to Antone's, either for a Greek Salad or one of their well known Po-Boys. This was during Antone's heyday, back when they had a location on Taft. Someone described the exterior of Royal Bakery as bland and uninviting. Actually, it is inviting and just has a vintage look that's missing from most buildings these days. It's easy to just assume one cannot walk inside because of the industrial look, but you actually can go inside. The loaves are priced at $1, which is very reasonable considering one can make 2-3 sandwiches out of one loaf. Another person mentioned Leidenheimer out of New Orleans. I wouldn't compare Royal Bakery to Leidenheimer. Royal Bakery's bread is just great in its own right. The old concept of "there's something in the water" applies here in the same way that comparing Houston bagels to New York City bagels is rather pointless. Service here is always great. And the bread is great also. Another way to enjoy: add butter to the bread and toast it in the oven. It is wonderful to just dunk it in soup. Highly recommended! Overall, 5/5.

The building is "underwhelming" from a retail storefront standpoint, but I've learned not to judge a book by its cover. When I stepped out of the car, the smell of fresh-baked bread hit me, and I knew I was in for a treat. I purchased a bag of 8 fresh hoagie rolls for $5 and 4 extra-long loaves for $ 1 each.
