I've been a loyal Art's customer since it was owned by Art (the original building was so small you had to go outside to change your mind and the floor was on a tilt). The Gordon years were great as well. These new owners have finally turned me off. 3 times in the past month I've stopped for rye bread and all 3 times they've been out and have said they won't be making any more soon. Wouldn't you think if you sell out you'd put it on the schedule to make more. I also purchased a dozen chocolate chip cookies and discovered 2 were half pieces (essentially i got 11 cookies). They also seemed to quit carrying local products (i.e. maple syrup). Such a shame a local institution has declined so significantly. read more

I ordered 4 doz cut out cookies days earlier than agreed upon pickup date. I provided the cookie cutter as well. Was quoted one price($42) but upon checkout was told that total was incorrect and was charged $65...for 4 doz cutouts... outrageous. Was informed there were a few broken cookies which were included at no cost . Was not shown product before cashing out/ leaving. When plating for our event, there were a lot more than a few broken. They looked to be decorated by a child( uneven icing, sloppy edges and icing thicker than the cookie itself) and were ugly to look at. Greatly disappointed. The old Art's bakery would have never let those cookies leave the store. Won't be trusting them again. read more

I'm a longtime Art's Bakery customer, and after about 18 months of this, I'm going to weigh in. I just spent 20 minutes inside of arts to purchase all of three items. Eight employees, all talking to themselves, except the deli lady who always seems stressed out because they simply leave her all alone to slice, and customers get all backed up, not one of the other eight employees to the rescue... Ever in the last 18 months. I didn't get a hello, thank you. Please come back or thank you for waiting The employees once again are so busy talking to themselves that can't be bothered talking to customers. Frankly, I'd get much better service if I ordered my groceries online and then I wouldn't have unrealistic expectations about employees being helpful. And of course, the owner of Arts will probably react to this review by thinking there is something wrong with his employees. No, this problem begins at the top with new ownership that just does not seem to care. read more

Was in Erie PA on our hunt for Pepperoni Balls. Thanks to Yelp we found Art's Bakery. Loved the pepperoni balls. Just heat in the oven (400f) for 3 to 6 minutes. We cut ours in half before we heated them. This is a great neighborhood bakery. We also purchased cookies and cinnamon breakfast rolls. Everything we tried was yummy. It's a complete bakery - they had breads, cookies and others desert items. Plenty of friendly wait staff behind the counter. Open 6 days a week. It's a 5. Parking in front- the place is very popular when we visited there was a large crowd of folks buying their baked goodies. read more

I dislike leaving a bad review. I couldn't buy anything. Probably my ocd on cleanliness. The cases with desserts were filthy and not because they were busy it just hasn't been cleaned in months. 5 high school kids behind just chatting and hanging out but they did ask us if we wanted anything twice. Over the past couple months we have been to the location on Buffalo rd multiple times and have probably bought every bakery item available at this point. And every single one barely makes it past the day we get it because they are all so good. The cannoli's are absolutely delicious. The cinnamon rolls are so good. The danishes are the perfect texture. The lobster tail was new to us and really yummy. The cookies are great although we haven't tried as many of those because we end up picking pastries over cookies usually. We also got two combo subs from the fridge which were as good as any premade sub especially for the price. I also love that they have other local goods available. Been going to Arts for 52 years... since I was a child. My parents knew Art quite well. Watched as his son took over the business and continued to be a customer. Helped cater Villa Maria's graduation for 4 years using Art's products. Was quite sad to hear when he decided to sell. But, as I have said - I've been a customer for my entire life. I was curious to see if anything had changed with the new ownership, and unfortunately I have discovered it has... and not for the better. Around Thanksgiving I had stopped by and wanted to buy some Chocolate No Bakes. When I walked in, the place was full of employees and just 2 customers... and not one person looked up to aknowledge me or ask if they could help me. Hmmm, ok. When I finally got someone to notice me, the employee was quite, shall we shall.... gruff and rude. A youngish girl with dark hair, who wears a baseball cap backwards on her head. She just looked at me and said "what do you want". Hmmm, not winning any points so far with me. Still, I smiled at her and and asked for a dozen chocolate no bakes. She proceeded to get them, and as she seemed to be finished retrieving them I started to ask for a dozen chocolate chip cookies when she abruptly said "wait" to me. REALLY not winning me over at this point. So - I politely waited for her to finish what she was doing when she rudely said to me "what else do you want". Hello?? How rude can you be?? I told her again and watched as she retrieved them and then asked "is that it?" with attitude. I'm floored at this point with how rude this girl is. She went to the register, rang it up and then just looked at me without telling me what the total was... I had to look at the register for the total. I handed her cash, needing change back... and she just dumped it in my hand - not telling me what it was and dropping half of the change in the process. No apology for dropping it, just a dry, annoyed look. And then she just walked away from the register - no "have a nice day" or "thank you" or anything! So I said "Have a nice evening" to her... and she just ignored me! I left the store feeling so upset about such horrible service, I literally swore I'll never come back. I was appalled. Shared my shopping experience with some of my friends and neighbors who said they had similiar experiences. Well, I decided this evening - months after this experience - that I would give them a second chance. Big mistake. Much to my disappointment, this experience was an exact replica as my first visit. And this same girl waited on me with a mirror image of results... right down to ME saying to HER "Have a nice evening!". Absolutely the WORST customer service I have ever seen. You MUST aknowledge customers and make them feel welcome! You MUST ask if you can help them instead of ignoring them. And above all you must SMILE and be NICE to people. None of which did I experience on either of my visits to the store. I felt so dismayed... like they hijacked my lifelong experience at this store and threw it away. As far as the quality of the food : on my first visit, the chocolate no bakes (which I've been purchasing for years) were quite wet and mushy.. the ratio of ingredients was off. The Apple Turnover was all dough and no flavor... and they use to be my favorites. This visit this evening: the chocolate no bakes were a FRACTION of the size they use to be... almost half the size. I ordered a cake for our baby shower. And called back to add layers. The manager Gayane was able to accommodate the changes very easily. The cake was gorgeous and the Nutella filing with layers of chocolate and white cake was very fresh and delicious. I would recommend this bakery for all special occasions. Thank you. read more

This place is delicious! I was on a quest to find some pepperoni balls/rolls/bread, so I picked up a loaf (without cheese) and and bag of rolls (made w semi-sweet dough, has a chewier texture). The guy helping me was very informative when I asked what the difference was (besides the obvious), and very helpful. We also tried some truffles- on the sweet side, but fresh and delicious! In comparison, the loaf far exceeds the 'other' 'highly-recommended' pepperoni loaf we tried. That one was tasty, but the bread-to-pepperoni ratio was sad in comparison. This Bakery has the best baked goods I love the strawberry rhubarb pie all the pies have a tender flaky crust that is just the perfect amount of crust to fruit filling. We have a little tradition of driving over to Arts on Saturdays after church. We try to get the Erie Reader and we pick something up every week. I personally love their Buckeyes, red raspberry flips, and molasses cookies. My best friend likes their pepperoni balls. My father in law really loves their strawberry rhubarb pies. So I ordered my Thanksgiving pumpkin pies. Please don't make the same mistake as me next holiday. I'm pretty sure they massed produced these then froze then thawed them out for pickup. Believe me ...they looked and tasted like this was the case. Soggy crust..the filling separated from the crust. Not great. Won't do that again. And does anyone smile in that store??? My family was in Erie Pa for a Vacation mainly to spend some time at Presque Isle but also Erie is a lovely place to vacation in the summer time with two small kids. While we were here my wife suggested we stop by Art's as it's seemingly an Erie institution and their cookies are "World Famous" Located only about 10 minutes from Presque Isle, after we'd spent some time frolicking around the beaches we took the trip out to Art's before heading back to our hotel. Once we walked in the smell hit us.....a sudden influx of heaven directly into the nostrils. Not the most polished of places in terms of a storefront but you certainly get that "old world charm" feel when you walk in. The counter is manned by very friendly people and service was quick. While there was no lack of sugary treats to choose from ( Pie's / cakes etc ) we chose to sample a dozen of the cookies and boy were we not disappointed !! Incredibly fresh tasty cookies with an awesome variety of flavors. We were so impressed that the day we headed back to Buffalo from Erie we stopped out here again to stock up on cookies and also buy some for friends and family. And I couldn't help but grab a couple of "cheese bread" rolls to munch on for the drive...also tasted like heaven. We stopped at Art's for dessert... because apparently dessert places are hard to come by in Erie. I wouldn't call it a traditional grocery store, it had some specialty items liked beet pickled eggs, pickled hot eggs, peanut butter spread (not peanut butter), etc. They also had chip flavors I hadn't seen before. I can't eat anything with gluten, and they are definitely not a gluten free store. But, my husband, daughter and son all got bakery items. We bought 6 peanut butter twisters which they said were fabulous. The raspberry cake balls were also raved about. My husband wasn't particularly thrilled with his peach turnover. We walked out with cinnamon rolls and cheese free pepperoni bread. Those are for home tomorrow when we see my oldest daughter. Although I couldn't eat anything, I would highly recommend this place because they had a HUGE variety and it smelled wonderful! read more

I was looking for a place that had homemade sweets and breads, Erie isn't large for these establishments. Art's provides Erie with a unique and traditional style of baked goods and essential flavors. The place is small but smells like bread Heaven. I would have picked up everything if I didn't feel like a fat slob. They make delicious cookies, cookie pies, pies, scones, flippers, cakes and breads. The pepperoni balls are delicious. You must get the Arteo's (their version of Oreos)! I didn't find any cupcakes, perhaps they were hiding from my insatiable appetite. Art's Grocery & Bakery is just that, a small grocery and bakery store, but there's something more. If you ask a person in Erie where you can get a good cupcake, they'll ask you if you're serious first, but then, they will direct to a super market, like Giant or Wegman's. Art's is no super market, it is about 10% grocery and all bakery. At Art's you will find, cookies, pies, scones, flips, signature threats and the all American cupcake! These are real cupcakes too. Freshly baked with "real" frosting, not that fluffy wet sugar stuff. Ontop of their great selection of tasty treats, you will be treated well as well!
