They were out of cream sticks by the time we arrive (late morning on a Sunday), so we ordered a half dozen variety, with a couple of chocolate cake glazed, a chocolate iced, a cinnamon bun, a sprinkled iced, and a pumpkin donut. The attitude given by the young male owner was horrible. It was a Saturday morning when I stopped by and there were a few people in line, a good thing for the new owners, right... He out loud said to his mother that they should lock the doors because they were so busy. Wow did I really hear that, sure did. Someone might want to remind this guy that a line of customers waiting to buy their product is a good thing. I'm almost 60 years old and have enjoyed H&K as long as I can remember. However, it's sad to say that has changed with the new owners. It's been a steady decline for me. The signs they have posted about people being rude were my first concern. The signs sound more like a threat than anything else. Second, guy behind the counter was very messy looking and just way too much beard hair for me in a shop. The last straw was the prices being raised and the fact the gentleman behind the counter not seeming to happy with the fact he had to get up and help me when I came into his store. The consistency of the donuts has dropped as well. Very sad to see after all of these years. read more

Having grown up in Erie on the west side H&K donuts were a legendary classic among all the donuts I've had in 67 years id definitely pick the coconut toasted cake donut as my all time favorite! From my experience you just can't go wrong with an H&K donut. read more

I agree with Don's review from February. The new male owner can only be described at "slovenly". He clearly does not want to be there. I get it, maybe getting up at 4am is not for everyone, but it's the deal here. I quite buying my regular 6-10 dozen per month after being scolded for not calling ahead. To be fair, I has been scolded two times in the store for not calling ahead where I explained I'm in no rush and to help others first. The last time is when I was 5 minutes away and called in for 4 dozen. I was again scolded so I hung up. The bearded one called back and asked if I hung up and I said yes, I can only get scolded from another adult after 7:30am and I've had my coffee. Haven't been back since. In general, the donut quality had slightly improved. H&K was losing their outer crispy-ness and getting more bready. New owners improved that. read more

We just got 2 dozen this morning and to say that we were disappointed would be an understatement. We come in frequently from the Ohio line and this will be our last time. Cake donuts seem to be the same but I don't know what happened to the chocolate iced, just not the same. But the biggest problems were the long John's and the twists. The long John's are anything but long and the twists are the same. They're literally half the size that they used to be. I understand that the economy isn't what it used to be but donuts are a luxury that we pay good money for and expect what we pay for. This isn't it. What a great little donut shop - we were told they've been there since 1959! We stopped there both mornings during a recent Erie getaway. We got there a little late the second morning, so they were sold out of a few varieties. If you don't see what you want, be sure to ask - they had a few available that weren't on display. Recently have been buying donuts from here since I moved on this side of town. A great place with a wide arrange of donuts to choose from. I have yet to have a bad donut there. They open at 5:30am but sometimes can sell out quickly. The donuts are that good. There is seating there where you can have a donut and coffee. The prices of a dozen or half dozen is incredibly cheap even in this current economy. An awesome local place! read more

It's amazing from how many types one can choose! They are akin to the kind from my childhood. They are old school filled, "meaty dough", not empty inside with puffed up air. They may have day-olds, which for the cheaper price, are still tasty. Although they are for sale, I sure hope a donut lover buys the business! They can run out early and will put up a sign. Amazing donuts; super friendly staff. We arrived at 9:30 am and lots of donuts were already sold out, but the women working there was willing to make the kind our kids wanted if we wanted to wait. We opted not to do that and our "second" choice donuts were amazing. Social distancing is strictly enforced and masks are required. The line moved very fast and it was nice, for us, that they took cards for payment. We would 100% recommend this place and we'll definitely be back!! read more

First stop on today's donut tour of Erie, PA. A vendor had brought me a dozen a while back so I had to check it out for myself the next time I made it over that way. Wasn't disappointed. The shop is small with a good selection of everyone's favorites when i arrived at 9:30 am on a Thursday. I quickly settled on two -- pumpkin cake and a raised with a lemon filling. These are the chocolate frosted donuts with the white cream through the middle. It has become a tradition for Papa to take the grandkids for a walk up the street to pick out their favorite donuts for breakfast when we are in for a visit home. Erie PA, H & K Doughnuts are THE BEST. I've travelled far and sampled many a donut, but NONE compare to these super fresh, addictive treats that were my childhood favorite. I grew up one block over and would get the family a box every Sunday. Now when I travel home to see family and friends, I get a craving for the ONLY donut worth eating. Donuts and prices were good, however the Halloween decorations were completely over the top and far too graphic and scary for families with young children. We love Halloween and decorate at our home, but did not expect to walk into a donut shop on a Sunday morning with our toddler to be greeted by motion activated decorations that were very loud and scary and to be surrounded by decor that is appropriate for an adult establishment or haunted house. We got 3 dozen donuts as quickly as we could and left promptly. Our child is not easily scared and loves looking at Halloween decorations, but even as an adult, I was creeped out by what was displayed as well. Completely inappropriate and we will likely not be returning simply because of their lack of common sense when it comes to decorating with their broad range of clientele in mind. read more

It's possible that H & K donuts are really good, but I didn't have the chance to try them as I turned around right after I walked in because employees weren't wearing masks. If you're considerate of other people and wear a mask, I'd advise against going to H & K. Clearly they don't care about their customers and preventing the spread of Covid. I would like to review the donuts served at this donut shop, but I cannot. I have heard from many friends who have had them, some raved, some said eh. After Church on August 8th I went to the H & K, upon entering I noticed a complete and total lack of donuts in the cases, I said, "I guess you're out of donuts" and I was met with laughter. I was not amused. As far as I am concerned it is one thing to run out of donuts during your business hours, maybe they had an unusual rush. They certainly could have had a sign on the door so people don't expect to be able to purchase them. One thing you should never do is laugh at customers who were ready to do business at your establishment. I will never return to this place. I did call them and let them know of my displeasure at their behavior. At that time they did not offer to make amends, I informed them that I would be giving them a negative review on yelp. I feel the behavior of these people was rude and inexcusable. I only just now joined yelp to give this review, and it is my first. I do plan on reviewing other places, because I do like to give good reviews, and frequently compliment business in person and on the phone for exceptional service and product. I am a person that likes to hear my friends opinions on using businesses whether it be a restaurant, or auto repair place.
