Dined in at Arturo's last night (Friday) to try out the restaurant since I'm new to the area with my BF. We started out with the steak nachos and within 30 seconds of placing the order they were already being served to us! They tasted so good that I don't even think I stopped to breathe... Next I ordered the Chicken & Steak combo Fajita Platter and my boyfriend had gotten the enchilada burrito with steak... the meat was so flavorful and juicy, I couldn't believe it. Our server, Natalie was super friendly and made the experience very enjoyable. The owners son, David, makes a BOMB ASS margarita too, I normally don't drink so I asked for it not to be too strong, I watched him make it fresh & it was the best marg I've ever drank. For one thing, choices are limited in Poplar Grove. It literally has like one restaurant. Arturo's is that one, located in what they call downtown. Has a pretty basic menu of Mexican American favorites. The margaritas are better than the food it seems. Anyone can figure out this isn't going to be authentic. It may be just what you expect from a Mexican restaurant in this kind of town. The drinks may be the best things as far as value. It's about $6.50 for a pretty big margarita. These may not be strong, but they're pretty good tasting. As for the food, it's food. There's the usual like burritos and tacos. Protein choices are all meaty. There's not a whole lot for vegetarians. It's $6.50 for Chips And Guacamole. The chips tasted pretty old and stale. Basic. The guacamole was pretty plain to be honest. Come here and don't expect much to be good. It may be good for the locals. Those who know more about Mexican food won't like the food as much though. read more

Always great service. The steak and chorizo suezo chimichangas are amazing. Usually get a large margarita or two. They are decent and don't give me heartburn. The only gripe is you have to pay extra for additional chips n salsa. Not a huge deal just most places don't do that so it stood out. Will continue to eat here occasionally. read more

Great flavor quick service! I got the combo (taco, flauta and chapula) with all different meats (steak, chicken and ground beef) and they all had great flavor. The rice was bland but the beans had good flavor and with the rice mixed in with the beans you couldn't tell the rice was bland. Overall, very good and will come back again. read more

Nope. Never again. Just moved to Poplar Grove. Saw there was a Mexican food place local. Super excited to have one so close. Welp that as far as my experience got. So I ordered a steak burrito - no rice or bean. Paid for extra steak, paid for extra cheese. Pretty simple. Then I got a chicken Quesadilla. 21 bucks on a burrito and a chicken quesadilla.. Simple right.. hold the brakes. I checked my food, new place wanted to make sure it was done right, burrito was super light opened it up. Lots of tortilla. I literally paid for extra meat cause I know. Rice and beans are fillers. Anyway frustrated I then checked the quesadilla. There was all this juice on the bottom.. like literal water. I check and there's lettuce and tomatoes in the quesadilla.. like Is that a thing? Why would you put two water heavy ingredients in a quesadilla. What's gonna happen? It's going to be soggy.. like literally bread and water.. I go in and apparently I talk to the owner. Didn't know. Tell her I've never been there, I didn't know they put lettuce and tomato's in their quesadilla, cause again, who does that, and she preceded to ask me if the person who took my order over the phone asked me if I wanted everything on it? At that point i realized it was going to be a fight so I walked out, talked to what looked to be a cook outside and then she came out, to tell me the reason she asked was because the lady there hasn't been asking people. Not my problem. I said, then deal with that after i leave and don't put me in a situation to justify what's wrong with the order. They were more focused on who to blame rather than just making it right. To top it off it wasn't even the person she was trying to blame who took my order.. Again 21 bucks on simple meat burrito and a chicken quesadilla. And instead I got all this drama, a soggy quesadilla, and a 12 dollar tortilla burrito. I'll literally go to Taco Bell next time.. Like Y'all may get away with sub standard Mexican food around here cause the white people around here don't know any better but look I'm from Southern California, I didn't know I'd have to actually say, please don't put water on my quesadilla and then justify what's wrong with it. read more

This place is not what it used to be. It's terrible. Not fresh ingredients, cheaply made. Very Americanized. Not authentic at all. Mess up the order, not try and fix it, and still try to over charge you. This place is a joke. There are plenty of actually good places in Belvidere or Harvard. read more

This is my favorite place to eat locally for My family and budget. They have the best ever fajitas and everything else that I have tried is amazing and so yummy. I think I could eat there every day! Seriously it's that good! Enjoy the atmosphere and honestly I don't think I can say anything bad about this place; except that I would love to see them come check on their newer customers a little bit more to see if they need a refill, napkins or more chips or if they want anything else, etc. It's just good business and it seemed to me and my family that they had more time for the families they knew instead of getting to know their new customers and making them feel as welcomed too. I'm sure that in time they will get better at this one little thing but I don't want to think this is the normal for one of the best places in a small town with a lot of different places to eat this one was by far the best food and I'm hoping the staffing issues are just due to the Covid situation and not the normal way they do business. Delicious!! First time here... We were accidentally given the wrong order, but what we got was really good! I called and spoke with a very nice lady, and I was absolutely impressed with how she handled it and her resolution! The young man who took our order was SUPER nice as well, and even the other customers who were eating were really nice! Will definitely be back!! We ate- chicken burrito and chicken quesadilla. Missed the friend ice cream, but maybe next time! ...... UPDATE ...... So we went back! We tried the cheeseburger and fries this time, steak burrito, and fried ice cream... All items were VERY good! Love Arturo's!! Awesome authentic Mexican food at very reasonable prices. If you are looking for comfort food, this is the place. Hubby and I eat here at least once a week. Everything I have had has the home cooked taste. Come on Fridays for their fried cod (best fish and tartar sauce around) and on the weekends they are open for breakfast. Went to Arturo's for the first time. I ordered a Margarita and it was horrible. Tasted watered down. Chips and salsa were not very good. I ordered a Enchilada and my husband had the fajita's. Service was slow and when the meals were delivered his was sizzling, mine was cold. Over all service was so so. Food was bland. read more

37 dollar for two Burritos and extra chips a little pricey. The burritos were big and Luke warm. They charge for more chips when most places will give them to you free. But we would try this place again. Actually we took half the burritos home and had them the next day. I added more cheddar cheese and my own salsa and heated in microwave and it tested better then they did at restaurant. read more

My wife and I stopped at Arturo's midday Sunday after visiting Edward's Apple Orchard. The serving of chips and salsa sauces were fresh and good. Although the Guacamole was not fresh made it was homemade and acceptable. The Mix Max Tacos, ground beef tostada and beans were flavorful. The waitress was very friendly and accommodating. This is not a fancy sit down restaurant but a friendly place to have some good Mexican food. It is probably an entire different atmosphere on a Saturday night. read more

Ambience was borderline. Interior was nice, well maintained, and clean. Decorations although sparse were appropriate. The noise though was deafening, and the two guitar toting Mariachis playing the Eagles "Hotel California" was a bit trippy. Service was friendly and fast. The food though was disappointing. Chips were clearly from a bag, and were stale. The small ramekin of salsa was all liquid, bland, and contained only a few chunks of onion and tomato. My fajitas were served with cheese already applied - initially looked good but became progressively less appetizing as the cheese turned brown and then burned on the sizzling platter. The chicken was overdone, and the steak was so tough it was inedible. The worst fajitas that I've every had. The rice was dry and tough. At least the beans were mediocre. This place has the best salsa in chips in the Poplar Grove/ Belvidere area. Their tacos with whatever meat you order are delicious. If you're feeling really hungry, try the Burrito Loco, my personal favorite. The owner is a charismatic man and the service is always fantastic. I pointed to my toddler and said "he would like a cheese quesadilla." The waitress brought out a full size cheese quesadilla with lettuce and tomatoes, of course my kid wouldn't eat it. I tried sending it back and she said "that's what you ordered." I didn't even ask for all the money back, just asked to be charged for a kid's plate at least, especially since my kid didn't eat it. Wouldn't do that. The enchiladas had cinnamon in them, disgusting! Easily the worst Mexican food I've ever had. Definitely the worst customer service as well. Haven't been back. read more

We love Arturo's! Have tried many menu items and all were delicious. The owners and servers are always friendly and professional. Favorites include suizo chicken enchiladas, extra-toasty chicken fajita quesadilla, the taco dinner, any of the fajitas. And for a special treat: the alambre combo. Arturo's also serves the best hamburgers in town, and the fish dinners on Friday and Saturday are wonderful (whether you choose fried or baked cod).
