This is a cute little Japanese grocery store. I stopped in for onigiri. I had the tuna and mayo and spam. They were both like $4.20. That's a little high, considering they weren't super stuffed with filling, but it seems like that price is pretty standard for the area. The tuna and mayo was kewpie which I appreciated, so it didn't taste like a tuna sandwich in rice. Lol. I only interacted with one employee here and that was the cashier. This is always a favorite for me! Tiny yet might Japanese grocery store that has food, drinks, and essentials readily available. I purchased food, drinks and essentials. I stock up on my favorite spicy rice crackers here all the time. Grab some ichi ban noodles. The black tea for the road. I often get toothpaste as well. After returning from my trip to Japan, I was really missing Japanese food so I decided to check out Maruichi, a small Japanese grocery store. Everything is very reasonability priced, even slightly cheaper than surrounding Asian grocery stores. They have some Japanese products that aren't in major Asian grocery stores too. They do sell some food, like onigiri ($3-4!), and drinks (cold and hot). They sell other Japanese products including alcohol, kitchen supplies, snacks, seasonings, and more. Awesome little supermarket. I think they're underselling themselves by saying they're a grocery store. I'm 100% pure American but from what I saw and what my much more experienced friends said, they sell anything you could want in the ways of Japanese food, excepting fresh meats and fish (I think). Huge selection of everything, including a very large baked goods (breads) area. Checkout was pretty fast considering there was quite a line at the time. And the customer base seemed to be mostly Japanese, but a number of people from other countries were in too. I haven't been here in forever and decided to visit when our family drove past MD to get to home in VA. This store is amazing. They have many foods, snacks, and drinks that you cannot find in Hmart and Lotte. I bought some Japanese snacks that I grew up eating, as well as a specific brand strawberry - green tea that I haven't found in any other local Asian grocery store yet. I also found more flavors to a specific sparkling drink brand that I like and haven't found in any other local Asian store yet. Interesting fact, some of the Japanese snacks that I grew up eating were from this Chinese grocery store that no longer exists in Chinatown, DC. They brought back memories and nostalgia. This shop is small but you can find so much around and in between the aisles and shelves. Our family enjoyed looking at the bowls, eating utensils, beauty products, and hello kitty stuff (my daughter specifically). Service was so friendly. Ooooo this place is sneaky! I would have never known about this place until my neighbor told me about this place. They sell all Japanese groceries and gifts. My daughter loves trying snacks from different countries and sometimes going to the Asian market doesn't cut it. The pricing here is just a little bit less than some Asian markets as well for their Japanese items which is good. It's not by the dollars but like $.50 but that's nice. We also went here to look at their gift shop because I love Japanese dinnerware/cookware and they have things of that nature there as well. The kid items like toys are a little pricey though but do your own comparing to see if it's worth getting. Hope this review helps! Great place to go! You can do your grocery of delicious Asian products, tons of snacks and eat a meal when you're done. It's very clean and they're pleasant. I enjoy there Onigiri, Sake selection and delicious pastry and bread. The frozen aisle is full of convenience items. Dumplings. Shu Mai. Red bean ice cream. Bags of edamame. Even a brief scouting trip will send you home with some great frozen items and inspire you to return. As a Japanophile... finding Maruichi was a game-changer. You won't find a better Japanese grocery store/market in the area if you're from the DMV. This place is super lowkey and located in Talbott Center in Rockville. It's at the end of a small strip and right above one of my favorite restaurants, Temari. They have a selection of fresh onigiri (rice balls wrapped in seaweed) to choose from alongside the bread and baked goods. My favorite is the salmon and tuna onigiri, and they always make a great snack on the road or throughout the day. They have a variety of snacks, candies, and a plethora of Japanese goodies you wouldn't be able to find in other grocery stores. I love that they have a refrigerated section where they have everything from fresh vegetables to coffee jelly (my fave). If you love to try different drinks like me, you'll be happy to know that they have a million different drinks to try in cans and bottles either cold or warm. I recommend some of the canned coffee drinks or the canned milk teas. They are super refreshing and delish. You'll also find an area where they have kitchen utensils and tools, household items, and even face/body care. It's small but they still have a good amount of product. They even have electronics like rice cookers and etc. You really don't know what you'll find; the possibilities are endless. How have I missed this cute Japanese Market and I've lived in the area for a decade!? It started with my craving for onigiri which I started my search on Yelp and this market popped up. I usually buy them at Tea Doh up the street. I'm so glad I stopped here, I ended up leaving with a few yummy bento boxes and onigiris! I couldn't wait so I'm eating it in my car and typing this review with my sticky fingers from the bits of loose rice dropping as I stuff these onigiris in my mouth! Get in my belly! Btw, if you park on the ground level by Temari Sushi you will need to walk up some stairs just by the dumpsters to get to the entrance of the market. You're better off parking in the back of the building at the very end of the plaza to get in. I noticed that the door on the balcony level is not open. Watched customers walk all the way down the balcony to find out that door is locked. read more

This is a relatively small grocery so you won't find a wide range of products just like a big popular Japanese groceries in west coast. However, this place had basic necessities for Japanese cooking/meals/life in general. They have a decent amount of frozen section, snacks, and condiments, which are all useful as a Japanese. Also, they have a small section of chilled items, including a good organic miso and my favorite cream puffs (ミニシュークリーム). Fantastic little Japanese grocer with yummy desserts, drinks and snacks! I saw a stack of bento boxes, turned around and then there was 1 left! That was enough to convince me. Grabbed an onigiri bento and a salmon onigiri. Both were very delicious and different from each other. The individual packaged salmon onigiri had salmon in it while the onigiri bento had bits of salmon mixed in with the rice. I think I would go with the individually wrapped onigiri salmon when I pick them up again. read more

I noticed Maruichi recently has been expanding more variety of food, ingredients and snacks. Clearly good news especially for someone like me, I grew up in Thailand eating lots of Japanese food but now living in Virginia which clearly lack of authentic Japanese food and Japanese market since the good old hidden gem Naniwa market. I don't mind 30 minutes drive all the way from Arlington to Maruichi where I have accessibility to get not-so-common delicious goods like crab cream croquette, curry bun, fresh ikura, Berkshire chashu pork, yakisoba bun and plenty others. This time I even bought the overpriced Mio sparkling sake. Had those in Japan before, clearly one of the best tasting sakes. Cost less than $5 there while it's $13 at Maruichi! But most of the staffs here are super friendly also provide splendid service so I wanted to support them as much as I could. This long haul pandemic quarantine has been alright so far, I can have variety of quality meals at home, thanks to magnificent grocery from Maruichi. While other American grocery stores around here are only good for gallons of water, let's be honest. Lastly, I like the online shopping system even though there was a problem with one of my Chashu pork pre-orders. They shorted me due to high demand (I think) but the staff gave me cash refund at the store. Small, family-owned local staple and favorite for Japanese groceries, snacks, and goods. Don't let the size fool you, Maruichi has most everything you need to make a wide variety of Japanese dishes. Lots of stuff here that you can't find at H-mart or Lotte - and a MUCH better selection and prices than the newly-opened Ebisu. Really can't recommend this place enough. read more

How the heck did they cram so much Japanese goodness into one shop, without it feeling all crammed-like and claustrophic-ish? Skillz. I had to go way up on "The Pike" for this store, but it was worth it. There is parking in the front and back, but the entrance is actually on the side of the building that is just behind the Rockville Pike side. Maruichi carries tons of candies, snacks, rice and other Japanese food staples. When I saw the slab of salmon in the small back deli area, I was tempted to purchase the fish for just a little over $6, but then got a little nervous that I might end up in the hospital while attempting to prepare my own sashimi at home. Presumably family run, given the pantsless toddler teetering halfway down an aisle before getting whisked away to finish his diaper change. Staff are polite in answering questions. Slight markup on some items, so it's best to familiarize yourself with what's similarly available at the Asian supermarkets nearby since the price labeling varies oddly-- more expensive to get a cold beer than the same one at room temp? Bonus points for Shiseido Tsubaki, some makeup tools, some kitchenware, milk tea, red bean/green tea/black sesame ice creams, and a small beer/sake selection tucked around the corner. Bakery rack has been sparse during my late-day visits. It's still a decent pit stop when I'm in the mood to make mochi or restock on miso/furikake/noodles/snacks/frozen essentials. TLDR: local J-mart with quadruple the space of Hinata... probably absorbed more business from Daruma's closing. read more

Maruichi has been a bookmark for me since I got back from Japan almost a year ago. I drive by it multiple times a day but because it's on the second floor of a shopping center I always forgot about it. Finally we stopped in on a Saturday without looking for anything specific an honest browsing trip. The first thing I noticed was it smelt really good- I was wondering where the street food smell was coming from. The second thing I noticed was how cramped this store was. The third thing I noticed was how many people were here. The store is actually larger than it first appears. There's two sections, a food section and a household section. Don't get me wrong, it's still a very small store. I don't think you could do all of your grocery shopping here.... espically produce as I didn't see any. One thing this store has going for it is the snack section. Lots of candy and chips and everything is priced well. I definitely notice a huge upchatge at some of the larger chain stores- green tea Kit Kats are a great example-$4 here which is close to the same price as Japan. Unfortunately we didn't buy anything but after all it was just a browsing trip. read more

Best place we have found for Japanese groceries in the DC area. Very kind, very helpful. They also carry a small selection of Japanese vegetables, but they are not always in stock. It's understandable, but it makes it hard for those of us who are coming from a ways off. During the pandemic, they started delivering and if you order over $150 it's free delivery. They were very communicative through the process. Pretty easy to get to $150 with all the items that you can't find elsewhere for the same quality. I sometimes go there because there could be something very authentic and specific that we can never find in anywhere else. As a Japanese, this kind of grocery store is convenient,however,I cannot stop feeling a few disappointments every time I go there. This place is very very small with too much staffs,which causes significant lack of social distance, sometimes even difficult to walk to the exit. It's still in the middle of pandemic.They should still take the safety more serious. Secondary, there are occasionally price tags/signs missing or misplaced and I had several experiences I was so surprised to see the actual price at cashier. Each items' prices should be more clear.(Some Japanese items could be very expensive.) Thirdly, all staffs are always too focused on adding the stocks and always on the customers' ways. They should do that work before or after the business hours ,because store is very small and they are blocking the aisles and definitely disturbing customers' shoppings. This is a hole in the wall Japanese Market that is niche down to the Japanese Culture. There are some items that you can find in the local Asian markets in the area like Lotte, H Mart, and Great Wall, but there are definitely items that you cannot find in other markets. They have Japanese specific snacks, seasoning, household goods, etc. One of the thing I like is their frozen meat section because they offer frozen Japanese A5 Wagyu steaks. It is difficult to find this quality of meat in your regular Asian grocery stores particularly because of how expensive it is. We actually came here to purchase their special ramen, but most of what they offer you can find in the Lotte in Rockville. They do have a variety of Japanese pastries and pre-made hot foods ready to go as well. Though they are a grocery store, they are lacking a lot of produce so don't expect to find a lot of vegetables in this grocery store. The staff here are very nice and won't hesitate to offer help and make recommendations. One of the staff members were recommending certain snacks to us. They also require masks for you to enter and is linked to 2 parking lots one downstairs and the other up the hill since the store is on the second floor. If we are in the area, we would most likely swing by to see what other things they have to offer, but it will be awhile until we come back as they do sell really niche items with a Japanese focus. read more

Where else can you find 22 different brands of rice? A great tucked-away store but hard to justify the Rockville drive solely for Maruichi. On the other hand, if I was already in the area then I'd probably drop by (assuming I hadn't already visited a larger Asian grocery store). Maruichi offers a small but respectable selection of Asian food products. The fresh produce section is very scant but check out the dry good aisle for noodles, rice, condiments, snacks, and canned fish. There's also a frozen food section that's comparable to the larger Asian grocers nearby. Both are roughly equal in its selections and its price points. Many of the food, sauces and other goods are imported from Japan. Prices are reasonable and this grocery store is really clean. I love this place. If you love Japanese food, make sure you come here. Due to COVID, they even deliver if you are within 50 miles. The staff are super nice and if something you wanted is sold out, they'll call you about a substitution. They are also always willing to help you in the shop if you are trying to recreate a recipe or need a substitution from your usual brand. Was really happy with this place until last buying trip, beware every one I was not charged the ticket price on all items, on a $180+ receipt $50± dollars were upcharged. What should have cost about $130 US dollars (because of the price marked is the price paid law) had over $50 added to it. May not be back again. Hidden gem in Rockville. Yes, it's not Mitzuwa @NJ, but you are not exactly driving 4 hours either (even though I often did). They have decent lineup of the basics, and frequent visits may result in finding different items that come and go. Unfortunately, frequent visits also mean thinner wallets, and for me, a fridge full of fruit drinks that will disappear in a few days, necessitating another visit. This is a store for people who want Japanese grocery, not just general Asian groceries. The price is a bit higher than H mart, but the quality correspond to it in many ways. We particularly enjoy the alcohol, juice drink and Udon selection. But they carry hundreds of other items, and every trip is an adventure. read more
