The store has a lot of fresh veggies and seafood. Overall it's a good store which we have been going to. But lately, there are some new staff in there and one of them is very rude. She isn't friendly and yells in the store loudly to her coworkers or customers when she displeased with customers way of picking up food. Unfortunately, this ruins the experience in shopping here recently. Even if customers displaced things or being a little picky, staff should not raise voices and loudly confronting customers and with the intent to embarrass people regardless if she is a managers or not. read more

There are a lot of trollers writing fake bad reviews about this store, which sadly does not surprise me. The store is pretty good quality, otherwise I wouldn't be going a few hours out of my way to shop here. Things are tidy, neat, organized and lots of great selection for such simple things as soy-sauce, especially if you are a connoisseur, which one becomes if you are Asian and into cooking. Being a vegetarian, there are lots of choices in fresh veggies and fruits, and great Asian choices. There are also aisles for tea, noodles, and cookware. My problem is that their checkout system is not sufficient. I cannot help noticing that in DC Metro all these Asian stores hire a high proportion of Latinos. They work at the counter and in the back and number more than the Asian workers. Having come from an Asian small grocery, everyone my parents hired were Asian. They offered pay to Asian college students. They know that Asian-Americans would like to work, and can do at least as good a job in sorting, processing, cashiering. My mom was a very good cashier when she helped out. They can stand the work for long hours just like in China. But here, they are NOT giving enough of those kinds of opportunities to Asian-Americans, even all the college students in UM or MCC who would also love a PT job. Specifically, I became angry because a Latino couple stood behind me and was bum-rushing me at the counter. They tried to cut in front of me, but I pointed out my place in the line. I had just as small a basket of items as they did, so they should have been willing to yield, but they were not. When it came to putting things in my shopping bag to take out, the Latina cashier barely helped me. Then I had to pay, but the Latino couple was trying to crowd me out, since i like to stand right in front of the register to receive my change, which I have a right to. Instead they objected to my wanting to stand at the counter table. Then when I was rather slow putting things away, they sort of made a jeering comment about it. This really caused me to blow my top. How many times do I come to a Latino grocery store and am very patient and pleasant? How many times do I put up when the fellow shoppers refer to me as "China" and the cashier is a tiny bit edgy? They never hire Asian Americans to work at any Latino grocery stores that I know about! Never! I never see them cooking in the back, doing packing work, or cashiering! As for Indian grocery stores, it is also totally out of the question! They also proudly hire all of their own to pack, sort, cook, bake, their Indian cuisine! Asian-American businesses cannot even have the dignity of hiring all Asian workers many of who would love to work. Instead, they have to cater to corporate America and hire just so many Latino and black workers for their stores, and whether this is due to DEI is perplexing. Again, I never see that Latino/Black grocery stores are hiring any Asian American workers. That simply is not required so it does not happen! So these corporate pressures push Asian Americans who are more average students and from the lower-income towards crime and towards the underworld. They even have to work at nail-salons where they have to slavishly cater to the whims of women pretending to be mistresses and subject to all manners of abuse. From there they can fall victims of cancer, and rape, and much worse as they cater to the whims of disgusting creatures hoping for their moral downfall. This would be less if Asian Americans stood up for themselves by having all-Asian businesses like they do on the West coast, and where the authorities still respect and honor family businesses and allow them to hire as many of their own kind as they wish, because I absolutely refuse to believe that Asian Americans young or old would NOT want to work at these Asian supermarkets if they were given a chance! Just look at all those Asian housewives shopping here! They are so quick and grabby and focused that they just swim through the cashier line and never mind anything. They certainly would not mind some jeering by a few mouthy other minorities! Failing this, then the other option for older disabled Asian-Americans being bum-rushed and treated to Spanish conversation at this store at the check-out counter, is to PLEASE CONSIDER PUTTING IN SELF-CHECKOUT COUNTERS. I pointed this out to a manager, but he said all he can do is report any problems with checkout to the owner. CVS, Target, Walmart, and many other stores have gone Self-Checkout and it is to help accommodate shoppers since these self-checkout offer more space and a bit more time as well. There is nobody standing right behind you crowding in on you and talking up to the cashier. They can go to almost any other store in this region anyway and find a few Latino grocery stores to shop and play bum-rush at the checkout. read more

Have been shopping at this Chinese supermarket forever but today was the first time I went by metro - to Rockville Center and then walk 0.8 miles. On a nice day it's not a bad walk and Rockville Town Center with many cafes and restaurants is also interesting to check out. Of the 3 existing Chinese grocery stores I've been to in this area - NY Mart a bit further north in the next shopping center, and 99 Ranch in Germantown - despite this being the oldest (there were two other smaller ones a couple of blocks away to the south - Kam Sam and Maxims but they closed years ago) for some reason it's still the one I find myself going to the most. Maybe it's because I'm used to the layout of the store and sort of know where everything is but basically I can usually find just about everything I need there. Granted there are somethings they don't have all the time or stopped having altogether - such as certain kind of scallion crackers or frozen steamed cakes etc, but neither of the other stores have them all the time or ever either. Also am now a fan of their prepared food/dim sum section - the egg tarts both Chinese and Portuguese styles and savory flakey pastry snacks - only problem is on a weekend they do tend to run out of stuff frequently. Today for instance all the egg tarts were gone and it'd be a 30 minutes wait for the next batch to be baked so I had to give up. Anyway now that I know I can get here without a car I can come back anytime. read more

Also it's very crowded and the lines at checkout are slow and long. In terms of freshness, the frozen aisles appears okay. The produce and veggies are hit or Miss. also, the pricing here is heavily inflated compared to other grocery stores. If you must need groceries, you can come here. Came here recently when looking for hot pot items. My usual spots are 99 Ranch and maybe HMart. I found the prices here much cheaper than 99 Ranch.. a drink cost 1.99 vs 2.39, for example. I was here mostly for hot pot broth mixed and the place did not disappoint. They even had a half foot spice mix shaped in a gummy bear figure for hotpot. I was tempted but had no idea what it would taste like. Also, this seems to be one of the few Asian markets that had taro cakes and radish cakes available. Made in Taiwan. Yes! Came here for the first time to check out my Chinese grocery options. Bought some dough sliced noodles, enoki mushrooms, fruit, and dim sum from their food court. What's hot - Variety. This is primarily a Chinese grocery store, so there are other Asian grocery products, but majority of everything is geared towards Chinese culture, which I love. For example, there is an excellent variety of frozen dumplings, frozen dim sum, frozen seafood, noodles (in addition to/and more than just ramen), dough slice noodles, candies, snacks, and produce. If you can't find something at another Asian grocery store, like H-Mart, you can find it here. - Prices. Very reasonable, especially given the brands they offer, quality, and freshness of the produce. For example, I bought 2 packs of dried dough slice noodles from Taiwan. There was a special of 2 for $10. Each dim sum, from their food court, is approximately $4.50, which is pretty reasonable, especially in comparison to what you would pay at a restaurant. - Layout. Well-organized, which makes products easy to find. There's a small food court, which also includes baked goods. - Parking. There's a decent size parking lot, which is helpful What's not - Quality of food court food. Not the worse. I bought their sweet sesame balls, egg custard tarts and tripe. Everything was pretty good, but the sweet filling in the sesame balls was very minimal and the dough of the sesame balls was overly thick. From what I saw from their dim sum selection, their chicken feet did't appear to be appetizing. The skin looked overly looked. - Cleanliness. The floor appears to be pretty dirty. - Layout. The interior layout can be kind of tight. Their aisles are somewhat narrow, which isn't the worse thing in the world, but it can get cramped and tight when their staff are stacking shelves and/or when there are many customers browsing. To be specific, I got to the store this evening at 8:55 pm, five minutes before closing, hoping to grab two items quickly, and was refused entry because the staff had already closed the registers. After I protested through the glass door and noted the time, I was told to "come back tomorrow." 你明天再回来吧！ Truly disappointed to see employees cutting corners and disrespecting customers' time. 11/17/21. Stopped by while I was nearby as I wanted to purchase persimmons. They happened to be on sale for $1.58 per pound. Although they had ample quantity, the selection wasn't great. They were small and many were bruised, mushy, or overly ripe. I was able to select a handful. They had other types of persimmons, but I went with what was on sale. I also picked up a container of golden kiwi, 5 for $3.99. I checked to see if they had these Korean sweet and salt crackers I like by Orion Gosomi, but I couldn't find it in the snack aisle. I've only seen it sold at Lotte. I was pretty bummed. The aisles for packaged food is narrow and would be tight if you are pushing a cart and need to get by. Beware that there are inconsiderate patrons that leave their carts loosely in the parking lot, which is my biggest pet peeve. I quickly looked at the produce prices as I was in a rush and they seem comparable to other asian supermarkets. This market does seem smaller in size compared to its competitors like Lotte or H Mart. If I'm close by, I would stop by to pick up a few items but would prefer one of the other markets. read more

The parking lot is small here and very over crowded. The inside of the store is also small and something the aisle are so small that two shopper can't be next to each other. They have variety is items and prices can be high. They also have alot of cashier so that help with the lines. Went in to purchase pork belly and a tomato the meat looked a bit weird and i asked the butcher and several employees when was it packed. There was no packing date on the meat. I get to check out and ask the girl there and she doesnt speak a word of english. A group of women then came over complaining in spanish while poking and prodding the product i was questioning. One proceeded to puncture the packaging with her nail... if i qqs iffy about the meat then... i was definitely iffy now. You just contaminated the food i was interested in purchasing. They also have a good selection of Asian fresh produce. Their fish selection is good too and the folks clean and cut the fish as desired. The shop hours are 8am to 9pm. However, yesterday evening (2/9/24) the security guard turned the light off of most areas of the shop at 848pm and shouted to everyone "you must leave, I will kick you out if you don't!" He (an African American) is very very rude to all the customers who are still shopping. We asked him why you don't respect your store hours which you put on the doors. He answered "IF YOU WANT ARGUE, I WILL SHOW YOU HOW TO ARGUE!" He had a gun and was threatening us. What a bad experience! I never saw any store treat its customers in this way. I really like this Chinese supermarket. They really have everything that I need to all my Chinese dishes. All of their vegetables are fresh and reasonably priced. They have the unique Asian veggies there such as bitter melon, shiitake mushrooms, snow pea greens, yu Choi, just to name a few. They also have a Chinese roasted meats counter, where they gave roasted ducks, char sui pork, pork belly with crispy skin, soy chicken, roasted squid, etc. There is fresh seafood, and butcher to cut the meat to your specifications on site. They also have all kinds of Asian dry goods, sauces, noodles of every kind. I made lots of wontons and beef stew with noodles from the ingredients that I got from there. I like this store a lot and will keep going back for my groceries. read more

I go to Great Wall regularly for Chinese groceries and veggies. It has a much better selection of produce than the Hmart near me. The vegetables are very fresh and the prices are very good. The food court is very good and the price reasonable. There is a good selection of vegetarian dishes and the food is not overly greasy. Three dish combo and a soup is $6.56. The BBQ is better than most other grocery stores in the area. To top it off, the people working in the food court are very friendly. The negatives: Parking is not easy on weekends. I find Friday is a better day to go to the store. Parking is a lot easier. The shelves are well stocked compared to Mondays. The dry goods and sauces are expensive. This place is freezing cold in the winter. Sometimes it is colder inside than the outside (in the winter). The place is not the cleanest and check out is typical Chinese service. read more

I visited Great Wall for fresh produce like chives, garlic, and red peppers. I am so glad I did! The red bell peppers were only $2.99/lb and all the produce were super fresh. I love how nothing was wilted or frozen. Today, I also discovered that the GW location here offers the thick plain noodles and yakisoba noodles at a very inexpensive price. I was also thrilled to find that they carry the Sun Noodles ramen for only $3.99 a box beating the pricing offered at Lotte and H-Mart. All in all, I think this is one of my favorite places to purchase fresh produce. I would also recommend checking out their robust selections of Japanese beauty products. read more

This is my least favorite specialty supermarket in this area. Most of the items I needed were out of stock. This place appears to be a lot smaller than other ones. It could definitely use a makeover. Produce is okay... we did buy some rambutans, were ok. You have to eat them fast. Quality isnt the best here. Deep sigh....... The seafood department is deplorable. Im shocked that the health department has not issue code violations. The cases that these fish are in are disgusting and the stench is to the point of passing out. I wanted to make my own poke bowl but lll get my meats from another store. As far as pantry stuff it is limited compared to Lotte or 99 market. They had no ice cream. What a bummer. This review is quite overdue. I am writing this review in the context of the Baltimore area. There are barely any Chinese supermarkets in the area. This Great Wall Supermarket is probably the only one that is very Chinese based. So if you are looking for something that is similar to Ranch 99, this is probably your best bet. You have Lotte and H Mart if you go more west on 40, but that is more Korean based. The hot food area here really isn't bad for what it has to offer. Definitely cannot compare it to Ranch 99 in other more Asian concentrated areas, because this is the only one in this community. The prices are very reasonable. The quality is not the best, but it will do We usually come here for the produce which, I think is more fresh than Lotte in Ellicott City or the one in Cantonsville. They also have produce that Korean based supermarkets don't have. They offer fruit samples from time to time, but they are a little more restrictive now due to COVID-19. They have a variety of Chinese snacks, but definitely not as much as Ranch 99. You can still get away with quite a good amount of Asian snacks though. They have an entire aisle devoted to instant noodles which is typical for your Asian supermarket. Their seafood section is okay, I prefer Lotte's or H mart in terms of pricing and freshness. The freezer section has a variety of dumplings, baos, frozen dim sums, etc. The meat section was more limiting than I thought, but they do have the foundational ingredients for if you want to make Chinese herbal soups (pork femur bones, neck bone, back bone, lean meats). I think this GW in the area probably has the more affordable beef short rib compared to H mart, you just have to ask them to cut it. When it comes to sales, I recommend their produce since it does appear to be pretty fresh and affordable. They also have good sales on shrimps as well which I have seen as low as $3.98 for 41/50 sizes. read more

The store is well stocked and neatly organized. But the customer service is poor. A sign was posted that frozen steamed pork buns were on sale for $4.99, but scanned at the regular price for $7.99. There was no sale end date listed on the sign. My cashier adjusted the price when I said the buns were on sale, but the cashier next to her insisted that there was no sale, but couldn't explain why. If this grocery store was Giant Food, the sale price would have been honored. Bottom line: Carefully watch the prices scanned during checkout for your merchandise at GW to prevent overcharges. read more

I've been coming to this store since it opened years ago. I've noticed that prices went up after the pandemic and have continued to rise. Unfortunately, there aren't many other Asian grocery stores nearby, as small mom-and-pop stores went out of business due to competition. The store staff is RUDE. It claims to close at 9pm but doors are locked at about 8:45pm. The security will prevent customers from making a purchase, claiming the store is declining services during the last fifteen minutes (he literally grabbed items from my hands and told the cashi not to serve me) even when there are customers still checking out and it was well within their operating hours. Store manager came up to tell me store was closed - ten minutes before 9pm. At the meantime the store manager would encourage security's obnoxious behavior. AVOID IF YOU CAN. there are other stores way better than this Greatwall in Rockville. I recommend THE NEW YORK MART. in fact that's where I'm going for Chinese grocery now. But I do enjoy coming here whenever I'm in town to get bok choy or Chinese broccoli and whatever else that I typically buy from an Asian restaurant. They eat fresh seas food, fresh vegetables and fresh meat. Nothing frozen for them. I, on the other hand, grew up eating fish out of a can, shrimp that had been deep fried from the shop down the street. My husband had to teach me the art of picking a fresh fish: clear eyes, skin that plumps and bounces back after you gently press it, and a tail that sits straight, there's something about the gills but I forget. When we first got married, four years ago, we search high and low for a place that sold quality fish. We hit upon the Asian Market, the Great Wall. Hands down, they sell fruits and vegetables that are fresh and low cost, then the other supermarket. We enjoyed their various fish and seafood offerings, they were fresh and the prices were excellent. Recently, the quality has gone downhill. It's hit or miss, sometimes we get good fish and other times, not so fresh. We still love this grocery store but wish there more of a guarantee of the quality of seafood. read more

I have been frequenting this store for multiple years and have never had a complaint. But sadly, I am reconsidering spending my money at this supermarket due to their refund policy and terrible customer service. Yesterday, I purchased seafood at a reasonable price and took it home to eat. After taking a bite, I realized that it had spoiled so I called the store to request a refund. They told me that there were NO REFUNDS for seafood no exceptions. I inquired about their responsibility to sell non-rotten food and they proceeded to say that all their food is fresh but they take no responsibility if it is spoiled because they receive it from a distributor. I understand the business decision that the supermarket is making and the challenges of having to run a business. However, customers should at least be able to purchase food without having to worry that it has rotten. read more
