If you're in need of an emergency room and this is the closest hospital, don't be tempted. Make someone drive you the extra distance to Mobile Infirmary, because if you come to Providence, nobody will help you. They'll take you into a tiny room, put an IV tube in you for no reason, and then make you sit in the waiting room for an entire day. They might check your vitals a couple of times while you're there, but it's just for show. They absolutely do not care how much pain you're in or what your symptoms are. I made two trips to this ER in one week (because of severe ongoing abdominal pain), and the first time they did a couple of tests that yielded no answers and wrote a couple of BS prescriptions that didn't help me. The second time they refused to do further testing and basically ignored me for eight hours. I eventually gave up and told them I was going home to die in the comfort of my own bed because I was sick of writhing in agony in the waiting room. Luckily I didn't die and was able to seek real medical care at another facility the following morning. STAY AWAY. Bad hospital. Bad doctors. Bad everything. read more

Yesterday, My daughter, who is on dialysis at 27, went to providence because her blood pressure was 195/117. She is a frequent patient at Providence, due to her illnesses. We were there all day trying to get her blood pressure down. She was given several doses of blood pressure medications and even 2 hour of dialysis. Her pressure was still very high when she finished and was taken downstairs and left by the nurses desk. She asked the nurse if she could take her pressure and the nurse simply wanted to give her yet another clonidine dose, which she had been taking all day to no avail. She told the nurse that she did not want to keep taking that because it had not worked. Other dialogue took place. My daughter overheard the " physician", say" you have kidney failure Duhh...Bye." My daughter became understandibly angry and was put in the waiting room, with her IV still in and in the hospital gown. When I picked her up she still had the IV in her arm. This was very unprofessional of the cowboy boot wearing doctor and the nursing staff involved,( not all of them). I wont give his name, but he can be recognized by the fact that he always wears cowboy boots.... I don't care if she goes to the ER everyday. That is the the job that you signed up for and the oath that you took. That doctor is a disgrace to all of the good doctors that there are and should NOT be allowed to work with people who are ill. read more

This is for the ER. Had to come here multiple times for kidney stones and kidney infections. If you can't even keep a sip of water down I thought I might need to go to the closest ER. Well the first couple times were okay they really cared and then after that its like they were bothered by me like oh you again. I just moved here I don't have a family doctor and even if I did I bet he would of told me to go to the ER each of the times I went. Horrible pain, fever, vomiting. You deal with a kidney stone and not wanna go to the ER for relief! Anyway when you are admitted the staff is really great. I even got close to one nurse and she gave me a little gift before I left. That's the only reason I give 3 stars. They just really need more compassion in the ER! People don't go for fun. I was puking my guts up in the waiting room and others waiting are giving me dirty looks. Blame the staff for not getting me back. read more

I went in to get a single shot and it took way too long! So disappointed.

My Mother is in ICU #507 she was admitted because her heart rate was going really high. We have noticed that something has happened to her sometimes she cant talk and just stares plus other things that are not normal. We went in there last night and they had put her supper in front of her nobody bothered to raise her head so she could even eat but she has gotten worse, she couldn't talk and she had her tea in her hands trying to figure out how to get it to her mouth, in other words she can't even feed herself now. They came in and told us we had to leave because it was after 6:30, we told them we were trying to feed her. Monday night the doctor was on the floor and we requested to talk with him, he was right there and made us wait over an hour. When we did get to talk to him and try to tell him something was wrong with her he said well I don't know I am not around her. he wouldn't listen to us or even let us finish our questions. My sister has went there in the afternoon and her lunch tray would be pushed against the wall, she got her food heated and helped her eat. She lays in there getting worse everyday no water or nothing . They prefer to stay back there on their cell phones while my Mother is being neglected. I could say a lot more but nobody will listen. read more

I brought my father, who was in his late eighties to ER on Christmas Eve with a horrible nose bleed. Not a normal nose bleed, but profuse bleeding needing a trash can to catch the blood. He was bleeding out in the ER waiting room with no nurse to help. The clerk at the desk was indifferent. It was like someone had made an incision in his nose cavity. It was horrible. My poor exhausted father waited for hours bleeding out in that place. When he got back to an ER room, the arrogant lazy ER MD (who I gathered was at the end of his shift) took a quick look with a nurse. The nurse inserted a cotton/gauze pack into his nasal cavity to try to ease the bleeding. It did not work. My father kept his hand up to his nose for over 6 hours waiting for help. I really thought my dad was going to choke and drown on his own blood. The only way he could breath was through his mouth and the blood was backing up dripping down his throat. I ran out to where the nurses and ER MD was sitting behind their desk talking and shooting the breeze. Not once did the ER MD or nurse come in and check on him for hours! I was furious, alone, and scared for my dear father. I have worked in a hospital for 29 years so confronting them was way over due on my part. I let the MD know my father was choking out on his own blood and he needed to go in NOW and check on him. A half an hour later the new ER MD ran in with 3 nurses to help my father, thank God! I never saw the first ER MD again. By the way, his blood count was extremely low and there was the question of possibly needing to perform a blood transfusion for a bit. My dad could have died there due to negligence. There was no excuse. My father suffered. read more

I spent 12 days in Providence when 35 weeks pregnant with the flu. I had an emergency C section and went on the ventilator. My pulmonologist, whom I had just met before the C section, stayed for 24 hours, coming in and out of my room and giving orders regarding my care. The nurses in ICU, SICU, and tenth floor were excellent. The respiratory, phlebotomists, xray, and mri techs were sharp and kind. I loved that people came in my room and prayed with me. When I was really bad off, two volunteers came in my room and sang to me. It was a good combination of skill & love. read more

The emergency room is a joke. I spent over six hours waiting in pain, to see a doctor for less then five minutes and was misdiagnosed. I was given no follow up instructions or pain medication that I could take. I told the nurse that I could not take Lortab, however they gave me a prescription for it anyway. The next day I went to Springhill Hospital emergency room and had test run to find out I had an peptic ulcer. When I contacted the administrator to complain, I was ignored! read more

My son was admitted to Providence Hospital on June 5th with a severely infected open wound on his foot. He had surgery on June 8th and at that time the doctor informed us that other than removing dead tissue and cleaning the wound, the he would not lose any bone or toes. On June 9th, cultures came back positive for MRSA infection. On June 11th he was discharged-without his wound being re-cultured (the isolation kit was still set up outside of the door when he was discharged). His discharge papers read "activity as tolerated". There was no mention of how to take care of the wound, what supplies were needed, no instruction pamphlet-NOTHING. Although the doctor told him that someone would be around to discuss home nursing care and that arrangements would be made to intravenously administer his antibiotics-none of this was taken care of. No instructions regarding precautions the MRSA and the post-hospital appointment was scheduled for July 3rd- a little less than a month from the time of discharge. Not to mention, that my son opened his room door to discover some nurses standing outside of his door talking negatively about him. When I called the floor to speak to the nurse who signed the discharge papers, I asked her for the name of the physician who discharged my son and she informed me that she could not find the name anywhere on the chart or discharge orders-REALLY? ABSOLUTELY, BY FAR, THE WORST PATIENT CARE EVER. If you want to live-don't go to Providence Hospital!!!! read more

There should a rating option of negative stars. Horrible, horrible, horrible! Other family members and I have had to go in here in the past, but never, ever, ever again. In the past, my (now ex-)husband had major back surgery and was forced to wait over 2 hours for a nurse to come help him get up to go relieve himself (their rules, not by his choice). When his IV ran out, including the necessary pain meds, it was again several hours before the nurse came "right back to take care of it". A year later, I waited nearly 4 hours in the ER with a ruptured appendix with less than a half dozen other patients in the waiting room. The surgery was adequate in that they took the ruptured appendix out; the secondary infections from improperly closing up the incision sites was beyond inexcusable. Now last night, only for purposes of geographic proximity, I brought a friend to the ER. They rushed him back rather quickly only to give him an excessive dose of Valium and leave him sitting and waiting for 3 hours before they did anything further. The charge nurse, in all her un-knowledgable glory, refused to provide verification of our visit to the ER; poor idiot can't ever legally sign her name to any document. It is a sad day when the patient knows HIPPA better than the "professionals." It is even more sad when the public recommends not only that you go to a different hospital, but that you flat out avoid one. I now understand why the local grapevine has such vehemence in the warnings not to go the Providence Hospital. read more

TERRIBLE EXPERIENCE. Where is the patient care? My son was seen after spending hours in the ER on sat. He arrived to the ER in excruciating pain with his head and neck. A spinal tap was done and he was later sent home (about 9 hrs later). He only got worse in the days to follow and could not even sit up because the pain was so bad. He tried to get his test results from the spinal tap which was ordered by a Dr at Urgent Care but was told that he had to come back through the ER to get results. He was in such pain that he couldn't ride because he couldn't sit up. I called the hosp Tues and told them what was going on and asked them to please help him get his results and explained that he couldn't sit in a chair hours waiting to be seen. I was told that if he had tested positive for anything that someone would have informed him. NO ONE CALLED BACK WITH THE RESULTS!!!. He returned to the ER today(Thursday) and after waiting for a few hours he was seen and told that he had tested positive for Viral Meningitis (which was determined from the spinal tap done on sat. that the hosp wouldn't give him the results on.) THIS IS SO WRONG!!! He came to your hospital for help and there was no concern. We will not use Providence Hospital again and we will tell everyone about our experience. What if he or any other patient were dying??? Would anyone have even cared??? read more

DO NOT GO TO THIS HOSPITAL! We had a problem in one department, and the next department took revenge too. My father had surgery, and I was the only family member listed. Nevertheless, the two volunteers refused to allow me to see him because I was not a family member. They knew what my name was before I told them, and I offered to show my driver's license. They refused! They were laughing about the situation, and she said, "Oh Well, you are not family." I asked for their manager, but they said no because I was not family. They allowed strangers in with my father and his doctor. When we complained to the nurses on the 9th floor, they told us, "that happens every once in a while." A nurse was listening to our personal conversation behind closed doors. She was very threatening and combative, and she came at my father. We were concerned about my father's safety because we asked for help. Each employee that we spoke to at the hospital and the doctor's office told us that he or she does not have anything to do with it, and they refused to help us. Not one person helped us including Providence Hospital and Dr McGee's office. They put on my father's chart comments about his family. We were both upset. UNDERSTANDABLE! NEVER go to this hospital. They have NO COMPASSION for the patient and their family. They DO NOT care about people! read more

in mobile there just isn't a better choice. i have had 3 children there, several outpatient procedures, and visits to the e.r. with my kids. the staff is really friendly and the facilities are clean. it does take a while in the e.r. if you aren't in dire need but thre are several urgent care centers around for "non" emergencies. read more

We have visited this emergency room on three separate occasions. All three have been unsuccessful each time to actually be seen by a physician. One resulted in setting in the emergency rm for 4 hours, after we left, went to another health care facility, they immediately had an ambulance rush my wife to the emergency heart Dr. at providence. My daughter-in-law was suffering with extreme high blood pressure after recent baby delivery, dizzy about to pass out no worries, 5 hrs in ER no physician. We have to leave and go see an outside Dr. To prescribe blood pressure medicine to lower her BP. We have Blue Cross Blue Shield and get billed every time for no service from this waste of time ER room. The latest was my grand daughter with 103 fever, they tell me on a Sunday morning 3:30am, only two people in the waiting rm, they have no beds available. We wait till about 6am, nothing,,, no help. We give the baby Motrin to reduce fever to 101. We will wait until the pediatricians office opens. This ER room and Hospital, has been removed from our families list. It is not a recommend health care facility. I highly recommend going to Mobile Infirmary, it is worth the drive.... read more
