This place is absolute horrible. Took our 14 month old daughter in for an extremely high fever, and we saw some after about 30 minutes. They were able to figure out the cause in a few minutes but we waited over 2 HOURS for discharge papers, while there were no new admits to the ER for the duration of the time. The front staff was rude whenever my wife asked for a timeframe for the discharge papers to be returned so we could get our infant daughter to bed. Avoid this place at all costs read more

IT was the sunday night USA was playing portugal in the world cup. we had sat down to a chicken dinner when my wife exclaimed in a loud voice( i think i have a piece stuck in my esohagus i need to go to the hospital) so we go to seton hospital emergency room a few minutes drive away . i dropped her of and parked the car .. when inside there was at least 4 /5 folks that appeared to be waiting for attention , after signing in we sat and i continued to watch the game on the tv provided thinking we would be there for the long haul. after a while she remarked she was really uncomfortable and felt like she was going to choke plus her breathing was restricted so she went to the reception counter and explained to the * clerk * about her discomfort and the danger of choking . ** go and sit down **was the reply ... ahhhhh WHAT SERVICE IS THAT ??? she finally took copious drinks of water and said it eased the discomfort a bit .talked it over with her and decided to get what treatment we could at home. preparing to depart she was unable to cancel the appointment as there was nobody in attendance at the reception .so we just went home, fortunatly the attack was not severe and with a little coaching and more water the blockage released and she was out of danger I was reluctant to write this as i though it may have been a isolated incident but it appears other yelp posters have had similar experiances with this hospital .whether all these bad reviews will change the situation there i dont know one can only hope . read more

Hospital looks beautiful. However, everything that glitters is not gold! Within the first 48 hours of admission things were overlooked. Not sure why all the bad reviews as my experience here has been excellent. I came in by ambulance mid day Monday with chest pains and shortness of breath. Within an hour the ER had done the testing to determine that I had a pulmonary embolism. I was admitted and the doctors and nurses here have been outstanding - professional, knowledgeable, and compassionate. The icing on the cake was today when I realized it was my wedding anniversary. I asked the desk if I could go down to the gift shop to get my husband a card. That was not allowed, so the lady from the gift shop came up to my room with a card for me and some free candy so I could give something sweet to my husband. Who does that??? Sorry for the lengthy review, I was scheduled for this surgery over a month ago and was told by my doctor that a nurse from this hospital would reach out to me a few days before my surgery to ask some family history questions and register me and what not, the nurse that called me was named Erica, she went over everything she needed to go over and near the end of the call I confirmed that I would have to at the hospital at 6AM since that is what my surgeon told me, with an attitude she said "No you don't need to be here until 9:30am" I said are you sure I just want to be sure she said well I'm looking at the paperwork here and that's the time you need to be here. I said okay hung up and that was it. Well the day of my surgery I was planning to be there at 9:30am because that's what I was told. Well at 6:30AM the day of my surgery a nurse called and asked where I was at, I was shocked and said i would be in at 9:30AM because that's the time I was told to come, the nurse then proceeded to tell me that information was incorrect and that I actually needed to be there 30minutes ago (meaning 6AM). I was so frustrated and upset because I live an hour away and there was no way I was going to make it in time for my surgery at 8. When I went in the nurses rushed to get me prepped and get my covid test done my surgeon came in and apologized for the confusion and said not to worry they would take great care of me... well I didn't end up going into surgery until almost 10am from being late due to being given the wrong information. It was supposed to be an outpatient surgery but I ended up having to stay over night. Now my night nurses were AMAZING, so patient, attentive, gentle and friendly! A big thank you to the nurses Vanessa and Sandra who took GREAT CARE OF ME in observation-my overnight stay was amazing thanks to you two!!!!! However in the morning after shift change the day time nurse was one of the worst nurses I have came across maybe she was having a bad day, but the way she treated me was just outrageous She got in at 7AM, I asked for some pain medicine and she didn't want to give me any more through the IV because she said she didn't want me to stay longer that I needed too. I sat in pain for nearly and hour before she came in with just Tylenol. I then called for her around 8 to use the bathroom because I couldn't get up alone due to being fall risk. It took her well over 30 minutes to make it to my room and it seemed like she was doing it on purpose! She seemed so ready for me to be discharged even though I was in a lot of pain from just being cut open!!! Finally around 10AM my doctor decided to discharge me and give me a new prescription for pain since the one he originally prescribed wasn't helping much with my pain. The nurse came in when I had started to doze off and was messing with the IV on my hand and when I woke up she said she was going to remove it so I can get ready to go home and she literally ripped the IV out of my arm and hand and when I said ouch that really hurts she said with the ugliest attitude "well it's tape it's going to hurt". I understood that it had tape and it would hurts but it costs nothing to be gentle with a patient who just got out of surgery. She then proceeded to try to rush me to get up and get dressed so I could leave. I told her mom mom was on the way and I would wait for my mom to help me because she was being too rough with me, My mom got there and helped me get dressed and as the nurse came back in to give us the discharge information she said she had already called in the pain medicine to the pharmacy and that it should be ready as soon as we got there from leaving the hospital... this was at 11am. I wasn't due for pain medicine again until 3pm so my mom took me home to rest and went to the pharmacy to get the new prescription, she got there and the pharmacist told her they didn't have anything at all for me. Prescription was never called in. My mom called the hospital and spoke to the nurse and asked her why it wasn't sent if she told us she sent it, the nurse proceeded to tell my mom that she was a liar and that she never said she sent it when we both heard her loud and clear! My mom asked for a name and number to the head nurse so we could file a complaint and the nurse refused to give my mom the info, she just gave her a name and transferred the call. Just a heads up Seton Hays! This nurse Clemencia (I believe is how her name is spelt) was so rude and rough with me in just the few hours she was there from 7am to 11am. I seriously hope that she is reminded what bedside manner is! My mom is a nurse and we were both very disappointed in how this specific nurse treated me the morning after my surgery!!!!! read more

I had a recent visit to the ER due to a silly mishap. I cut my hand open while making some pico de gallo to use with dinner. Such a dumb mistake, I wasn't paying attention and the knife slipped and before I knew it, I was looking INTO my hand, muscles and all. I got to the ER about 7:00pm on a Tuesday and only had to wait about 25 minutes to be seen. Friendly registration staff and nurse that took my vitals and got me clean bandages while I waited to be seen by the doctor. Forgive me but I don't remember their names. I was stitched up and got a "better safe than sorry" tetanus shot with more than enough time to come home and finish dinner. I've got full coverage insurance but I'm dreading the ER bill that hasn't arrived in the mail just yet. Kyle is growing and so is their staff. I think the days of bad ER visits should be coming to a close for all of the bad reviews so far. read more

Ended up at SMCH ER on a Saturday night with a perforated appendix. ER Staff was spot-on with Labs, procedures, assessment and scheduled surgery. Slight hiccup occurred when ER pain medication was delayed causing much angst. Surgery scheduled next morning, on time without a hitch. In-patient stay of 1.5 days was tempered with delightful, attentive and knowledgeable Clinical and Non-Clinical Staff. I, along with family members, have depended on SMCH since they were first built 2010. SMCH just gets better and better. I highly recommend SMCH....What a great place!!! read more

I wish I could leave zero stars. The nursing staff is horrific. They don't dilute their medications. They blew my veins 5x in 6 days time. That has never happened anywhere else. The nurse threatened me with a midline and said if I refused I was not going to get IV meds anymore... when I'm there for an infectious disease that causes dehydration. I had a horrible reaction as I was leaving and the nurses refused to contact the hospitalist. Instead the same nurse threw my discharge papers at me.. and tried to refuse to give me my prescriptions as I was leaving. She said they were sent electronically. I am someone who is chronically ill. I know that narcotics can not be sent electronically. As soon as I said I was calling the pharmacy, she comes running back in my room with my crumbled up prescription. Which the doctor has already left so she was withholding it out of spite. I have been hospitalized a good amount of my life due to autoimmune diseases from gallbladder dying to chronic pancreatitis, liver disease, blood clots, internal bleeding and chronic c diff. I will never go back to this hospital. Truly. Don't go here. The charge nurse on the fourth floor is up to no good, even the other nurses and clinic assistants told me horrible stories about her. Only two nurses on the whole floor are genuine and even apologized and said they didn't know why that young girl was a charge nurse. My first day admitted, she was laughing with another nurse because she left an elderly woman on the toilet by herself because she was tired of waiting for her. You are better off driving to Austin another 15 minutes for quality care. 5 hours without anyone checking on me one day, they skipped time sensitive antibiotics.. then 2 hours of throwing up without any nurse coming in. You're lucky if they check your vitals once a day. I am glad I was able to fight for myself. If you have an elder parent or young child.. do not subject them to this type of care. There is a reason for the other negative comments. If you are reading this, it's probably because you need medical care and I hope you feel better soon. But this isn't a family hospital. This is an outrage. read more

When I went on vacation for this Fourth of July I never expected to be in the hospital on day one of my trip. All the nurses, aids, and doctors were wonderful. I'd prefer to give 0 stars... this was the worse ER service I have ever received!! Nurses are not attentive nor seem to be able to communicate accurately. After notifying/calling nurses several times, an hour later a nurse finally came to check on the IV that was empty for over an hour but forgot meds from 2 hours prior of request. I guess the place to be is the 3rd floor. My boyfriend of 16 years passed away in room 306 on Friday, February 9th at around 2:30 pm. He was terminal with Gist cancer and had a bout of Pneumonia. Friday it was decided that we would just make him as comfortable as possible without all the pain he had been enduring. HIs nurse Steve was the most compassionate caring person I have ever met !! I knew as soon as Steve walked in that morning he was our angel. I saw the look of concern and care in his eyes every time he looked at Doug. Thank you from the bottom of my heart Steve. Natalie the intake person for the ER on Sunday eve 10/23/16 was very pleasant, professional and friendly. I came In for a piece of food stuck in my throat, while waiting about 15 min it finally passed through so I cancelled being seen. Natalie showed real compassion and concern and asked me to promise to follow up the following day with my Primary physician or G I specialist. I made appointment for Wednesday. I am writing this review to hopefully get the attention of management for Ascension Seton Hays so they can make much needed improvements. I'm also writing this to warn other patients who may have a choice where they go for procedures so they go somewhere else. I had outpatient surgery at Ascension 10 days ago and it wasn't a good experience. Here's why: When I arrived at Ascension the morning of my surgery, I was directed to a work station for registration. An employee who was sitting at the desk said she'd send me a text with a link to the Ascension's web site so I could fill out forms to register. The only thing I had to use was my cell phone and the connection to the Ascension web site was poor. I got through it though after a lot of anxiety and frustration. I don't understand why these forms weren't provided to me ahead of my surgery date so I could fill them out using the same computer I'm using right now. Or, at least provide me with a tablet to use. I also don't understand why Ascension has employees who make patients do the work they should be doing. After registering, I waited to be called back to the pre op area and an employee came to get me after a short wait. Her name and position are unknown since she never introduced herself and she seemed to be just going through the motions without much attention to me, the patient. After changing into a gown a series of other nurses/technicians stopped by to get me ready for surgery. Some of them were just fine but my overall perception was that most of them were just going through the motions and performing at a minimal level. There were two notable exceptions , both operating room nurses who acted like they really did care and if I was just reviewing them I would give them nothing but praise. After I returned from my surgery, and was in the recovery area, I was not offered anything except cups of water and I kept having to ask for more water when I finished what I had. That turned out to be a problem since the nurse who was taking care of me was also with another patient and wasn't paying much attention to me. Also, cups of water were all that I was offered....no food (snacks) or other type of beverage (juice). So, that's my experience at the hospital which was not a good one for me. But here's another reason I'm writing this negative review...3 full days after my surgery, I received a call from an Ascension employee (I think she was a nurse) who was following up to see how I was doing. Seems to me that call should have been made sooner...probably the day after surgery, not 3 days later. At any rate, the person who called me was very, very nice and professional and in my conversation with her I mentioned the criticisms that i had with my experience. This person told me she would report my complaints to somebody in management who would want to hear about my experiences and I would be hearing from them soon. A full week has now gone by and I never got a call from anyone. Which just makes a bad situation worse. Reading other reviews on this site, I notice that there is someone representing Ascension called the "Ascension Texas Community Manager" who replies to comments and asks concerned people to call a number. I wonder whether that's the person who was supposed to call me but hasn't after a whole week. If so, it validates my impression of an organization that employs people who just don't care very much about the customers they serve. read more

I'm not the type to go to the doctor, in fact it had been approx. 15 years since my last visit. I generally don't care for doctors. My stay here the past couple of days has helped changed that opinion. I had to have my appendix removed here yesterday. I was very happy with the care I received. Worst emergency staff!! stay away from this hospital, I took my mom there and they didn't want to do any exams they just practically said she was faking the pain and told us to hurry out because they needed the room when no one was at the waiting area the male nurse was unprofessional and rude I don't know how he still works there and my mom has insurance and is a citizen I imagine how they treat other people without insurance I would give this hospital -5 stars if possible. If you can avoid this hospital, DO! Although their service is great, doctors and nurses etc, their billing will double bill you. Whatever your insurance carrier has negotiated with them for payment, they will bill you for all the additional amount they think they are due. They will also send you to debt collection. read more

This hospital is very awful very bad on service. I've been here for 4 hours , sick with the flu. Not once have they came to check on me. No medication or nothing. They only came to ask for the billing information. Just sad that thats all they care about if you have it they will take care of you and if you don't than they treat you like shit! Woke up Friday with swollen blistered lips, called my dermatologist and was prescribed a steroid cream that I couldn't pick up because I was out of town. Went to this ER on Saturday because the situation had gotten so much worse with blisters covering my lips due to a reaction from an acne medication. They were extremely painful and scabbing with a foul smell (all the signs of infection). After waiting about an hour, the nurse said they might give me a steroid shot. The doctor came in about 30 minutes later, tugged on my painfully swollen lips and said "They don't look infected." She came back another 30 minutes later and prescribed me AQUAPHOR, as if I hadn't already been using that religiously. I asked if I should use the steroid cream my derm prescribed and she said "OH yeah, that might be helpful." Wish she would have thought of that herself. I left after over 2 hours and over $200 completely wasted for them to tell me to do something I had already been doing, lips still in pain, swollen and infected. Showed my dermatologist pictures of my lips today and she said she couldn't believe a doctor would say they're not infected. DO NOT WASTE YOUR TIME HERE. read more

I wanted to thank the entire ER staff and specifically Nurse Alex and Doctor Smolik. I was in the ER yesterday and they were my "caretakers". We need to always remember that these health care professionals sacrificed a lot to get to where they are today, to receive their education while balancing life's demands to say the least. This is the absolute worst ER ever.I went tonight because I am 12 weeks pregnant and I have had a horrible cough for over 5 weeks now. Also I have a horrible pain in my ribs....this pain is so bad it hurts to breathe, cough, laugh or even move...I got a clueless doctor not sure if he is right out of school or not but he tells me he ordered a chest X-ray which is fine it won't hurt my baby but the ladies come in to do the X-ray and tell me he ordered 5 abdominal X-rays in which they told him no they would do just the one chest X-ray.....then he comes back to tell me I am covid negative and he doesn't see anything wrong...clearly there is a reason I have had a cough for 5 weeks and this horrible rib pain....maybe it's a pulled muscle idk but he goes on to ask me if I can take certain medications because I'm pregnant.....like wtf isn't it his job to know or read if it's safe?!?! He ends up ordering me NyQuil.....like seriously?!?! Then proceeds to make me wait forever to get my paperwork to not put anything down.... Needless to say I'm in horrible pain and plan to see my obgyn tomorrow....Seton do better and do yourself a favor and send that guy back to school before he ends up killing someone read more

They should not advertise as a children's ER! I took my 2 year old after my pediatrician advised me to take her to the ER for IV fluids. The staff had no idea how to even take basic vital signs on a child. I had to help them figure it out. The NP was rude and suggested a completely unnecessary catheter. After wasted hours and no real treatment, we were asked how we would like to pay our $1200 bill - for NO care! No one introduced themselves or washed their hands. No one verified identity or allergies when administering meds. We told them we came at the advice of our pediatrician to get IV fluids, yet she received no fluids. They did a rectal temp (and inserted way too far and for too long) and said she had a fever, yet discharged us without checking to see if the motrin brought it down. We reached out to the advocate and got no where - they don't care. read more

Apparently it must not be important to anyone but me. I am now couple of hours late taking my medication and am starting to feel a little nauseous. I tried to explain to the RN but she was having nothing to do with it. She said if didn't want to wait I could just leave. 2 or 3 other people got tired of waiting and just left. 20 more minutes and I am gone. read more

I have seen tattoo parlors in which gloves are worn with proper concern while using needles more often than I did while visiting this hospital. I am sad to say that that is true. I recently got an MRI at this location and the person in charge--not the tech--did not wear any gloves while putting in my IV. It will probably be fine, but why take that risk? I have worked in hospitals and it is healthier for both the medical team and the patient to wear gloves, especially while breaking skin and potentially coming into contact with blood. This is not a bad hospital, but watch and ensure that the staff is using the proper protocol for your (or your family member's) own safety. The person who did not wear gloves was also text messaging almost the entire time I was having my procedure done. It is wise to consider the germs that can spread from touching a phone--and whatever else--and then breaking the skin of another person. We are fortunate to have the proper resources in this country for hygiene and we ought to use them. Thank you and good luck. read more

I've never in my life have experience such terrible patient service. My family got in a car accident last night we went to the ER and my family was treated horrible I couldn't believe the way my family was being treated. I asked for an update on my little sister and the nurse rudely answered "what do you want to know" I asked how's her blood pressure she answered "its ok it's not urgent". No empathy what so ever she walked away saying "I have to go there's people that are actually not breathing ". I couldn't believe what was going on after being in a car accident the last thing you want to do is be treated that way. Second of all another nurse was like why dint you all take an ambulance from the get go everyone was being rude. I can't believe they get away with such behavior not only that but our family was in the waiting room obviously waiting since we are worried for are family members and we saw the car accident the nurse comes to the waiting room and asked "Is there anyone else that needs to be seen" we say no and her response was "you guys are here taking up space ". There was a lot of sarcasm no empathy rudeness it's upsetting that nurses treat people such way and they get away with this. read more

Took a very bad fall and couldn't feel my foot or toes, I had tripped over a large metal hook in the yard and it pulled my foot and I landed very hard on the concrete. Went to Seton scared because of my not able to feel my foot and up my leg, was treated horrible. I hurt so bad all over and could hardly walk or use my right arm. Back and neck got very messed up and my left knee. Dr.Reed when I finally got seen came into the room with an Ego bigger than Texas. He assessed me and said nothing's broken and he would give me Tylenol and Tramadol but they would need to watch me. No X-rays or exams for my lack of feeling in my foot or leg. I was livid. I told the nurse I don't want their medicine and I wanted answers. She went and got the doctor again. Who proceeded to tell me he knows best, that's he's been a doctor for 25 years. I told him his level of compassion and care is awful and he's treating me like a pain meds junkie. I said I wanted answers. He said he would do the X-rays and left the room bad mouthing me to the nurse. I had, had it at this point and choose to leave. The nurse was amazing but Dr.Reed was a genuine butt. He needs to learn to have compassion and treat patients with care and respect. I still cannot feel my foot 3 days later and hurt very bad. No thanks to him. read more

Waited 2.5 hours in the waiting room with a 9 year old with appendicitis symptoms. FINALLY taken back and have now been waiting for the doctor for an hour. The staff is nice enough but geez someone will die before they get in any kind of a hurry. Terrible experience. Had a terrible experience here in May 2011, involving the doctor and nurse assigned to my mother (who has advanced Alzheimer's disease) having no idea why she was admitted by the ER the night before, not reading her chart, refusing to talk to the nursing home staff calling on the phone, not feeding her, refusing to administer her medications, delaying her discharge simply so they could charge Medicaid more money, and then putting an absolutely incorrect diagnosis on her discharge papers. It was all in all a horrific experience. When I tried to call their complaint line, I had to leave a voicemail, and my call was never returned. read more

Went to the ER to deal with breakthrough pain due to my condition. Was given two shots for the pain. After an hour when I said I felt no relief. I was told by dr. Morgan li that it was only his job to make me comfortable. When I said I'm not and repeatedly tried to explain he proceeded to interrupt every sentence I tried to say. Then walked out of the room in mid conversation went and sat at a computer with his back to me and hid like a child. I got to spend the next four hours in the lobby cause he'd given me narcotic and said they had a full lobby and wouldn't let me stay in the room. I understand the no driving thing but I'd come there before those people and the room was mine. No one was being rushed in with gunshot wounds or major trauma. Then once the lobby cleared it'd been nice to not have to stay in the lobby in pain and in my wheelchair. Do not go there. read more

This hospital's ER was terrible. It smelled nasty, there was vomit on the floor in front of the restroom and we were waiting for 2 hours and had barely been triaged and registered. In the whole time we were there no one in the waiting room had been called to the back. My primary care doctor told me to go to the ER if I had any of 5 symptoms. I had 3 of the symptoms. My heart rate was erratic Going from 50 to 134 and the 60 to 125 while I was sitting still! I was dizzy, off balance, and my chest hurt. I decided to go to the ER. Once there they did not offer me a wheelchair even though I repeatedly told them I was dizzy. I had to walk to my X-ray, room, blood draw, etc. then once I got in the room the doctor came back and told me that what my heart rate was doing was normal and that unless it goes above 150 I shouldn't come in because ERs are for emergencies. I was livid! I was just following my doctors orders. I was trying to show them my results of my heart rate monitor I wore for two weeks, the paperwork my doctor gave me, and my heart rate my watch recorded. They wouldn't look at any of it.
