I love this place! I've been going here for years. Whenever I go to Berkeley to get a sandwich, this is where I go. Their deli is like no other. Everything here is fresh and made to perfection. They have a variety of food and goods here also, and a good selection might I add. This place gives an old mom and pops feel and the family who owns the store is very welcoming and kind. They keep me coming back. And they're now serving boba !! Which I can't wait to try ! Hands down the BEST Tuna sandwich I have ever consumed in all my life! Am I being super dramatic, no. I'm dead, serious! I have driven by this market for the past 20 years or so and have never stopped till today. As soon as I walked in, to my right was a little deli featuring Boars Head meats. I love boars head! While perusing the menu board. Came to the conclusion that I wanted Tuna, I'm feeling Tuna. Tuna on wheat with Lettuce, tomato, black olives, pepperoncini and mustard. And awesome kind team member gave me free American cheese. In a world of "dollar" more, that was really pleasant. At first bite to the last, that sandwich was amazing, scrumptious AND messy. Which was just fine by me! These little amazing unexpected food encounters has really taught me something. A. I really love simple, made with care deli sandwiches. B. I really love simple good customer service. And what I mean by simple, is, acknowledgement of customers and committing to the task/job at hand. I am really sick and tired of seeing people do a job they have no business doing. If you don't like customer service you shouldn't be in customer service. If you don't like "serving" random customers, then don't. Get a job where you don't have to deal with the public. Anyway...Sorry, I digress. This neighborhood store has been a staple for us since 2006! We love it. This is a family owned market, and they are wonderful, caring people. For being a "corner store", the selection might surprise you! They try to source as many organic products as possible. This includes a selection of produce, frozen foods, snacks, etc. The non-alcoholic beverage options are absolutely outstanding. They also prepare delicious sandwiches at a very decent price. The menu is on display, but the sandwich wizard always asks what you want, don't want, type of bread, or extras! Can't say enough about the Ashby Super Market. Really cute little corner store, they've got basic produce- bananas, apples, and sometimes pomegranates and mangos. They've got cabbage too. I was really surprised at all the vegan Amy's frozen dishes they have, and they had these $4 vegan meal bars i stocked up on. I love this little corner store! The family who runs it is always so nice and friendly. There are a ton of options as far as snacks and drinks go. I usually go here when I'm craving a craft soda and they have a ton of options in this department. They have so many rootbeer ... I've gone here at least five times just for rootbeer and I've never tried the same one twice. They also have organic three twins ice cream! Yumm! There is a great selection of produce, so when I've forgotten an ingredient at Berkeley Bowl, I can usually run to this store and find it. Most corner stores exist to sell liquor, cigarettes & lottery tickets. The food items are a dusty, stale and probably past the expiration date afterthought. These guys don't have a liquor license, and they really are trying to carry higher quality, healthy products along with the usual convenience store fare. But what sets them apart from everyone else is their commitment to selling BOAR'S HEAD COLDCUTS!!!!! They are one of only a very few selling the great Boar's Head line, and they ARE NOT OVERPRICED. I LOVE this place! The Ashby Super Market is like your average convenience store/supermarket, but the people who own the place and work there are fantastic when it comes to customer service. They are so nice and welcoming, I feel like I am doing business with old friends. They don't sell alcohol and that has really made that corner of Ashby and MLK a better place to be. They have these sandwiches I affectionately call the "heart attacks". They are made with Boar's Head meat and are so huge, even I can't eat the whole things. That's sayin' something! I also discovered their hummus plates. YUM! For like five bucks, I am all set to go when I am working at the Ashby Stage across the street. I just love this place. Have I said that? This market is everything you want in a corner store. The sandwiches, served up by Obaidah are delicious, fresh, large, and reasonably priced. The service is friendly and excellent. For a mid-sized convenience store, it really is a well thought out, small supermarket. It has a very clean and fresh "carniceria" with a friendly butcher ready to serve you. It even carries some organic groceries. It is not as fancy as the Star Grocery up on Claremont, but it is not as pricey, either. If I were a BART commuter, I could see doing almost all my shopping here. Anwar, the owner, is as nice a man as you can find anywhere, and it is worth making the trip for a sandwich just to see Obaidah smile. read more
