He's back! I've been seeing Dr. Patel since before he owned the practice in the early 2000s. He's always diligent, asks the right questions and educates patients. Last year, we walked through my issues, landed on a solution and a specialist. So when he was missing in action, I knew something was wrong and there was something wrong. He was sick and it happened quicker than he could get a sign up on the door. He's finally back and attentive to calls and appointments, per his usual. I had one appointment for a general checkup with Dr Patel that went well and he was kind, but noticed that his office seemed disorganized with no receptionist, stacks of papers everywhere, and computers from the 90's. He told me to go get bloodwork done before prescribing me any medication, where he said I can just walk-in to a lab facility. I go to the lab facility, and they explain I cannot just walk in, that there needs to be paperwork sent over from my physician. I called him a few times with voicemails to get this paperwork sent over, and never got ahold of anyone or a call back. So I was unable to ever get my blood work done. I then got sick a few weeks later, and scheduled another appointment with him. I show up and there is a crowd of people standing outside a locked dark office. I waited for over thirty minutes, knocking and calling multiple times, and he never showed up. I have taken time off work, which is not easy for me to do, just to have my time completely wasted because he was not organized enough or responsive. I am not usually one to write reviews like this, but I feel compelled to make sure the next person knows what they are in for. Before anything else - Dr. Patel is an excellent doctor. He approached my case with logic and compassion in both word and deed. His bedside manner and sense of humor put me at ease, and I have no complaints about his competency at all. I just wish I could say the same for his staff. The front office was staffed by a single person, who clearly should have retired long ago. During both my visits, she would sit in the side office with her back to the front door, slowly processing paperwork while the phone rang incessantly and confused patients looked around sheepishly, unsure what to do given the unmanned front desk. Some would sit for 10 minutes or more before realizing they needed to fill in the sign-in sheet, often after seeing more savvy patients enter the office and put their names down straight away. Others simply went back into and examination rooms by themselves, seeming to know that any expectation of order was one expectation too many. I watched more than one patient storm out in frustration, one woman uttering "F*cking useless!" as she gathered her belongings and pushed out the door. The facilities are almost equally as concerning. The office is located in an old house with creaky floors and musty carpets which had to be older than me. I should have known what I was in for when I first walked in and saw the yellowed, cathode-ray computers with green text-only screens and dot-matrix printers. Every surface below knee level was covered in a thin layer of grime and years of scuff marks. The lab was horrendous - a dingy basement where the nurse kept fresh urine samples(!) scattered across the counter, sitting on top of equally disorganized lab paperwork. More grime and yellowed post-it notes coated the walls, their reminders long irrelevant and prayers slowly fading. The newest-looking item in the room was a text by Joel Osteen, his perfect, evangelical megachurch smile contrasting with the dubious looks of those who trickled down the creaky steps. After I told her of my experience upstairs with the frustrated patients, she assured me I would be "in and out." Then the printer broke. She wrestled with the old printer as she complained about funding, and I sat there, resigned, as she PRAYED TO JESUS that the printer would work again. After some fiddling, it did. Thanks, Jesus. The nurse would process people, urine samples (!) and paperwork in hand, WHILE she held a blood draw needle in my arm. It must be mentioned that she didn't sanitize my arm with an alcohol pad before sticking me - I had to ask her. She spoke at length about how peoples' unsatisfactory experiences were solely a result of their own bad attitude. She did this while showing me each sample label with my name on it, as if I would be impressed by this most basic of competency. "Great Job." I said. With perfect comic timing, she realized she had mislabeled my samples. I had to watch in horror as she struggled to find the samples she had just placed in the rack with the others and re-label them correctly. She continued to show me my name on each sample until I asked her if I could leave. She drew a smiley face on my bandage, a reward "for my great attitude," attempting three times before realizing she needed to click the pen. Nice. After more confusion upstairs about where to get my prescription, I knocked on the side office door and asked the woman if I could pay and leave. She slowly shuffled around to the counter and produced a frayed double-entry receipt book, an object I have never seen in my adult life. I produced a $20 bill, and she kindly waved me away, explaining they didn't have any change. In an age with app-based telemedicine and high-tech facilities, marvel at how this practice still attracts patients. I myself will not be returning. read more

Zero follow-up after getting blood tests done. I have left 5 messages over the last three months with no reply. Impossible to reach anyone on the phone. Once you call the office you are directed to website where there is no way to leave a message or contact anyone. I hang on, leave messages with an answering service and no one calls back. They charge my insurance for blood tests, but no follow-up on what it means and no way to contact his office. The office resembles a third-world country (and I know, because I have just moved back from a third-world country). The Dr. showed up with a medical student in tow, so forget about having a private conversation with your doctor. The whole place was sketchy. I am sorry, but this was a complete waste of time and funds. This place is a scam. read more

I'm a physician myself, and I have to say that I really do appreciate Dr. Patel. He's intelligent, thorough, and has a nice, quiet bedside manner. Really a pleasure to deal with. Like other reviewers, I've noted the disparity between Dr. Patel's quiet and friendly professionalism and his staff, who normally just completely ignore me when I come into the office. I always have to be the one who approaches them to ask "um . . . do I need to check in?", etc. I've NEVER had any of the staff members welcome me, say "good morning", "the doctor will be right with you", etc. BUT, I normally pick the earliest appointment available in the morning, so things are on-schedule and quick, and I am usually in and out in 30-45 minutes total, after a thorough checkup with Dr. P. Which is pretty great. So one point off for the petty failings of the staff but otherwise very highly recommended. read more

This office should not be on ZocDoc. It's wildly disorganized when you walk in with the door to the patient charts (on paper) wide open. I specifically asked if they were running on schedule and was still seen 20 minutes late. I was only seen by a medical student who used an iPhone light as the flashlight to look in my throat. Had a similar experience to Molly G below. Went in for physical and blood work. Rushed through physical (fine, but would have liked him to been more thorough). But my blood work results? Never got them after multiple calls and messages left. I even made it a point after my exam to specifically ask Dr Patel and the staff - "How/When will I receive my results?" Dr Patel said results would be there in a couple days and he would call me. I even confirmed with staff can you schedule time to make sure the doctor sets aside 10 minutes to call me to give me my results and they confirmed. Never got the call, never got the results, and never got a response after I tried multiple times. I still paid my bill out of fear of being sent to collections agency. But got zero from the office. Horrible service, I do not recommend to anyone. read more

This was by far one of the worst experiences of my life. I went to this doctor for seizure medication and he told me that he "chooses not to prescribe things". I have been on the medicine for over two years and am new to DC. I was not asking him to prescribe it, I was asking him to fill it until I could see a decent doctor. Let's face it, if you have same day availability you are probably a terrible doctor. I blame myself, but victims usually do blame themselves. I am a victim of Ashesh Patel. I arrived on time, had filled out all my paperwork in advance and had my ID and insurance cards ready. After being there for an hour he came into the room to tell me that he "chooses to not write prescriptions" and my only option was to go to the ER because legally they can't turn away someone. That's right. He admitted that I DID need this prescription or else I would have seizures, but said he refused to help and I needed to go to the ER. After discussing with my previous doctors and family; I will be seeking an attorney. He should not have a medical license. NO-ONE should have to go thru what I did. PS The facility is very small with thin walls so no privacy, it was beyond dirty (dirt and blood smears on the walls, a full used needle bin sitting out, etc.,) and the front desk staff is not helpful or knowledgeable. read more

This review is not directed at Dr. Patel personally. He is a great doctor. His office, however, is pretty frustrating to deal with. Note: I am a healthcare provider and understand the challenges associated with running a healthcare office, so I feel this is pretty even-handed. I came in for an appointment when I was between insurances during August of 2017. I came in literally one day before my new insurance kicked in. Though it would have been nice for them to verify my insurance, I take responsibility for not doing so myself. Was stuck with the whole bill which I quickly paid months ago. Fast forward to April, and I get a second copy of the SAME exact bill. I have the receipt from my online payment. Tried calling the billing service--straight to voicemail, no response. Tried calling Dr. Patel's office during office hours several times and got barked at by an operator who apparently is "just taking messages because these are not office hours." ...what the? Tuesday at 2:45pm is, according to all accounts, office hours. Her rudeness was not appreciated. If ANYONE from Dr. Patel's office is reading this review, can you please call me back? I'm sorry, Dr. Patel, but I have to be honest. If this review were only about you then it would be four stars. I would focus my review on the quality of care and not on your staff, but the waiting room at your office is such a miserable purgatory that I had to speak up. In my experience, appointment times at your office mean very little. I have been here three times, and each visit has meant a 30-minute wait to be seen after my scheduled appointment time. Calling into your office is a nightmare in itself. I called one morning after not hearing back about test results, and politely asked if I could speak to you. You were with a patient, which is totally understandable, so I asked when you might be able to call me back as I was really worried. The receptionist didn't know, and said that "the best she could do was write you a reminder note to call me." She was abrasive over the phone, and begrudgingly told me that if I wanted, I could come in and wait my turn to speak to you anytime between 7:30 a.m.-11 a.m., or 1 p.m.-3 p.m. I work a full time job, so sitting in the waiting room without an appointment wasn't going to happen. I was short with the receptionist because she was short with me-- golden rule, you know? It's frustrating when people go out of their way to make easy things difficult. I made an appointment, which was delayed 30 minutes (as anticipated), and as I waited I saw the receptionist look at the patient sign-in sheet, go into the back area (which is reflected in the door and everyone in the waiting room can see), and snicker to one of her colleagues, presumably about a patient in the waiting room, and maybe even about me. Am I being paranoid? Of course. Is this professional behavior? No. Should an effort be made to make people feel comfortable and welcome in a place where they already feel like shit? I certainly think so. I can overlook the dingy office, I can overlook the long wait times, but I can't overlook being made to feel inferior and unwelcome. Your gatekeepers are rude and lack empathy, and I will be finding a new primary care physician. read more

Dr. Patel seriously needs to read these reviews and take some action. Dr. Patel, you are a very nice and gentle man, and a good doctor. However, your staff...is just HORRENDOUS. This kind of "customer service" is absolutely unacceptable in 2012 when we have choices on where to go. Where the heck did you find these people? They are all so so rude, they talk back to patients, they cut you off before you even finish, and god forbid there is an issue - they act like it's your fault. Generally, when people go to the doctor for an illness or have to be prescribed regular medicines, they are already under pressure of some kind. When ill, they are already not at ease and feeling crappy. Your staff makes it A HUNDRED TIMES WORSE. Who wants to feel crappy and then go to the doctor's office (which is supposed to help you get better) and feel WORSE? They need to be fired. I really want to add another plea about the front desk staff! Rama and the other younger ladies are generally helpful (although the latter seem new and slightly oblivious) but the older lady is quite rude. She warms up to you eventually (I try to be extra candy coated nice when I call) but she needs a lesson on manners. I fear she will pick up when I call, it's that bad. I just don't need that added stress as a patient. Plus I worry it turns off many new patients. I think this is generally a good practice and I wish it showed from the front desk. I really the idea of a solo practice where you are treated like an individual. Some other offices you feel like you are corralled into this waiting room with a million people. For this I do think I sacrifice some things - like no EMR, no state of the art office, equipment, etc. I like the idea of personalized service, however the last few times I saw medical students for most of the visit. Dr. Patel checks in briefly at the end. I wouldn't mind except since the students are only on a rotation, they don't work in the office for long. Both times I went in for physicals I had to redo a medical history each time, which just took much longer than it needed to. After waiting to see the "doctor" for 30 minutes, then answering 30 minutes of questions, then waiting another 15 minues for Dr. Patel to review is not a good use of my time. The days of Marcus Welby, M.D. are no more. Actually I encounter many medical students in my work (healthcare) and I think it is a good idea to have them learn from experience but the fact is most medical students these days are not interested in Primary Care. I feel it shows. I wish I could see Dr. Patel more of the time but it seems he is overwhelmed and has taken on too many patients. I wish it weren't this way Dr. Patel, but I know how hard it is to run a solo, non-specialist practice. I'm just saying I see areas that can be much improved. I've been seeing Dr. Patel for several years, and I think he's a very solid doctor -- I value his guidance. I've been getting frustrated with organization in the office, though. Last year I had health issues that involved coordinating with multiple specialists, and the office didn't handle that in a very organized way -- I didn't hear about some important results nearly as soon as I should have. The folks at the front desk are sometimes helpful and pleasant, and sometimes not. Read these reviews. People who go to Dr. Patel for a first visit will find him fine, and hilarious because he is so understated. Then, after they go several times, or have a serious issue, the ratings drop. Doctor Patel's demeanor is cute, but you won't get good long term care there. I went in with complaints that sounded like Carpal Tunnel. His office diagnosed me as having a spinal disease, and then talked at me for a half an hour about my high cholesterol, without entertaining spinal disease questions. I later learned from a specialist that in fact, it was carpal tunnel. I also, while there, noticed that the walls are paper thin. I heard about another guy who I had seen in the office a few minutes before who said hadn't been to a doctor for several years, but was worried he had gotten an STD. I told the resident who was there how well I could hear things at the time and his response was "I know right?" I later went to a specialist to ask about hearing issues that Dr. Patel had blown off, and found out that I had damage in my right ear. And yet I can still hear your conversations you have with him.... read more

As Jason F. states above, Dr. Patel isn't the George Clooney type, but he gives seriously inquisitive intellectual attention to problems. He also cares: I called on Xmas day with after taking a cleaver to a couple fingers, and he called back in 10 minutes and insisted that I couldn't just use twine and sent me to the hospital. It's a busy office that until 2006 had two doctors (Patel was the junior), but the other doctor (Leslie Fenton, should anyone care) retired. I was handed over to Patel, the sole proprietor these days. Despite halving the number of doctors, the office staff is very strong and with everything from blood work to prescriptions to insurance, the staff, which for the most part have been with the office for at least four or more years really are competent and professional and in some ways they are just as important as the doctor. Finally, the office couldn't be any more convenient. Just off Dupont, it's only a block away from Teaism where I usually go to recover from hearing the most recent prognosis! read more

He's quick with a prescription and asks limited questions, which for simple issues, I appreciate. I think Patel is better than Fenton. I have been a patient of Dr. Patel for over 20 years. Dr. Patel is a great doctor. He trains GW interns who want to become doctors. He has supported my husband's and my health for serious illnesses. His internal medicine experience is excellent. Dr. Patel is compassionate and professional. I trust him with my life. He is successfully treating me for serious medical conditions. I am able to live well and manage because of his knowledge and experience. I don't worry because I know I am in good hands. He has always been there for emergencies, monitoring my care, overseeing hospital doctor care, controlling the quality of my care. Dr. Patel is honestly the best internal medicine doctor. Dr. Patel was very kind and helpful; all of my questions were answered. He did not seem rushed at all. He was very professional and his office is very close to Dupont Circle. If I ever need to see a doctor, I will definitely make an appointment with Dr. Patel. I saw Doctor Petal once and he seems to be smart and knowledgable and my first visit was great overall and he asked me to do a follow up appointment which I did by calling his office for 9 am this morning When I arrived the office was closed, after knocking on the door, they opened for me The receptionist was there but the doctor is out of the town for a week! I've been going to Dr Patel for five years or so, and I feel like I owe writing him a recommendation. Dr. Patel is and old-school doctor. His office isn't fancy - it's basically him, occasionally an intern, a phlebotomist, and a receptionist, though she too has been absent during Covid. If you're looking for fancy technology, you won't find it here - exam rooms are sparse and practical. Also, Dr. Patel is soft-spoken and matter-of-fact. If you're looking for some super gregarious doctor, he's not it. However, unlike almost every GP these days, he actually sits down and listens to you and gives really good advice. He's never alarmist and is extremely reassuring. He's also extremely knowledgeable, and if you ever step into his office, you'll see he references his books a lot. I've described him before as the anti-WebMD. He can be hard to track down, but if you call in the afternoon, he's also happy to consult by phone without a visit. While the one-man-show nature of the office can sometimes be frustrating, it's only because he does a really good job of working with his patients. read more

I'm sure Dr. Patel means well, but I would this place at all costs. His staff and office is the most disorganized office I have seen. They really need to update to electronic medical records which would solve a lot of the incompetencies of his staff who can't manage to keep track of anything. I had to call three times to remind them to write a prescription for me. When I went to pick it up it was nowhere to be found. They claimed they had mailed it. It never showed up. Then Dr. Patel had the audacity to refuse to write me another one. I'm currently trying to get my medical records faxed to a new doctor and every time I call the office is currently closed. I just discovered Yelp doctor reviews and honestly they are way more helpful than restaurant reviews because I can get those anywhere. About Dr. Patel... lots of positives and negatives. First off, yeah, he's very awkward and shy. No big deal, I think his personality is fine and probably is better than some arrogant, overconfident doctor. He listens closely and genuinely seems to care about his patients. The location of the office is amazing. Probably the #1 thing I like about Dr. Patel is his flexibility/ease in getting prescription refills and general phone-in of prescriptions. Although this is also a problem too. It is often difficult to get a next day or same day appointment if you are sick (even in the early AM) and the response is usually he tries to diagnose you over the phone. Which is weird. And he'll just call in the prescription after that. Which 98% of the time is actually fine but I feel better actually SEEING the doctor. (Note: he clearly does this out of compassion only since he is not earning any money for these consultations but could easily squeeze you in for 1 minute in the office and bill your insurance company $200 instead). Now I understand there is a tradeoff between being able to schedule appointments, giving your patients adequate attention, etc. Because he's only one guy. But there's the real dilemma. For whatever reason, I generally don't feel like I am getting enough attention -- he's just not thorough enough. I had a physical with full bloodwork and never got so much as a call to tell me the results. And I know my results were not 100% normal because I had blood taken for insurance around the same time. All in all, he's great for relatively simple medical issues if you can get an appointment or are okay with phone conversation diagnosis. As I get older, I think I need something/someone more thorough for regular physicals though. It is possible that he will become this sort of thorough doctor over time (he's quite young) but the way it is now, and the way his practice is structured, I don't see it any time soon. read more

Dr. Patel is definitely socially awkward, but he's a super nice guy. He inherited me when Dr. Fenton retired, and honestly, I think he's a better doctor. Dr. Fenton had a tendency to overprescribe, and use powerful meds (like Zithromax) for run-of-the mill conditions. Dr. Patel is a more conservative doctor, and I like that. I also like that he's gotten rid of the numerous drug company plugs that were so prevalent during Dr. Fenton's time (he really liked drug reps, it seemed to me). The front desk lady is a little brusque, but she's been there forever, and once you get used to her manner (think strict mother type), she's actually quite helpful. I do wish that it was easier to walk in than it is. It used to be easy to go there first thing in the morning after calling in, and either Dr. Fenton or Dr. Patel would see you. Now, I've had to make other plans a couple of times. That being said, when I had pneumonia and had to follow up from the ER, they worked me right in. And, I hadn't been there for two years, but he was willing to still see me as a patient. Won my loyalty right then. I REALLY love that they have their own X-ray suite and blood draw area. This kind of "one stop shopping" is so much easier, and rarely exists today. This was great the first time I was diagnosed with pneumonia, because the last thing I wanted was to have to go to the hospital for a chest X-ray when I felt so terrible. read more

If more general practitioners ran their practice like Dr. Patel, there would be fewer complaints about health care and people would be healthier. Dr. Patel is all business and knows his business. But he isn't just about the business. I called with a very minor request and his very generous, very friendly receptionist told me to come right in. I did and I was seen immediately by the doctor. He checked me out and answered my questions. I was in and out in less than 10 minutes. Medicine shouldn't be a drive-thru, but sometimes you want a quick answer from a doctor you trust. To top it off they didn't charge me for the visit. I could not recommend him more. read more

I was a long-time patient of Dr. Leslie Fenton - the best doctor I have ever seen in the US of A (over the past 25 years) - admired and trust by all his colleagues. The - because of this age factor (wanting to be able to spend some quality time with his grandchildren) ... he retired ... Dr. Ashesh Patel was the fartherest thing removed from my Olde English physician with his old-school approach to medicine. When I had no insurance - Leslie Fenton saw me regardless - never cutting back on the personal attention a patient in need deserved. This used to be the busiest doctor's office ever seen in the whole Washington, DC metropolitan area. But I must attest that the staff as a whole could not be more congenial and efficient and insistent upon my personal well-being. Ms. Ellen was a gem to be remembered ... for ever ... I have heard from many of Dr. Fenton's former patients how unhappy they were with Dr. Patel(s) new uppity approach. Pretty awful experience. The office staff is rude. I saw a man with a chronic lung infection come into the office -- he explained that he did not have an appointment but he was having problems breathing. The woman behind the counter acted like he was pan handling! It was right after lunch and no one else was in the office except for me (I was waiting for paperwork). The rude tone of voice used towards the man was bad enough, but when the staff member came back with his file -- it was four inches thick! He was obviously a regular patient. My one experience with Dr. Patel had me chat with his assistant for 20 minutes, then she spoke to him, then he came in and spoke to me for five minutes. During that time, he assured me three times that he was more than qualified to handle my issue, but he never looked at me when he spoke. He looked at the floor, at the ceiling, at the table, at the artwork, at the chair, but never me. Also, he made it abundantly clear that he did not want my input or thoughts about my own health or how he would be handling things. I went elsewhere. read more

The only recommendation I have for this office would be upgrades. There needs to be more attention to sterilization- even non related surfaces such as walls. read more

I've been seeing Dr. Patel for a few years now. He's been friendly and thorough and does an excellent job explaining things. He's also made very good recommendations for specialists I've needed twice. Personally, I've never had a long wait. The office isn't spectacular or modern, but I adamantly disagree with those saying that it's dirty.... Also I've had blood drawn there once, and although I am TERRIBLE with needles, the technician was fantastic and made it as easy as possible. read more

The reviews that I just read here are true AND funny. Dr. Patel was referred to me by a friend. It seemed whenever I found a good doctor, they either retired or went into research. My first impression of Dr. Patel was that a) he was 12 years old, b) he spoke WAY too softly. (I had to ask him a few times to repeat himself) and c) he spoke too quickly (again, I had to ask him a few times to repeat himself). I had blood work done on a Tuesday and he called me on a Thursday to let me know the results which was great! BUT then he called me again on the following Monday to let me know the results AGAIN. (no new information). The staff is wonderful for the most part, but the woman that takes blood is about as personable as a blade of grass. And then she says 'God bless you'. Really? So for now, I'll keep Dr. Patel. He seems thorough enough. read more

After years of coming here, I am done. Almost every time I have to wait over an hour to be seen because the office frequently overbooks appointments (to their own admission). This most recent visit I waited close to 90 minutes to be seen by the doctor, then had to wait an additional 20 minutes just to get bloodwork done. It should not take 2 hours to get a 20 minute checkup. And my appointment was supposed to be the first one of the day! On top of that, the front desk person is often short with patients and the doctor does the bare minimum in terms of care. This place is not worth my time anymore. read more

I love Dr. Patel but the office is so disorganized. Both times I've come I've had to wait over 20 mins, the last time I waited close to an hour before being seen. Dr. Patel is the only doctor in this practice so if he's running late for any reason there will be a wait. The first time I went, I tried to pay my copay but the office staff said I didn't owe anything. A few weeks later I got a bill for my copay and after I paid it, I still got letters for the bill. I'd love to have him as my PCP and I love that you can book online but I can't deal with the inefficiency of the office. read more
