I may have mentioned before, this is my favorite type of restaurant, and I am all about the burger! So imagine my dismay when I drove all the way to Ashford and found they were temporarily out of ground beef! (Rest easy. More was delivered while I was there.) On this trip, I got the chicken sandwich. Please don't judge the sandwich by the picture. It comes with lettuce, tomato, and a special sauce... none of which I like. I just added bbq sauce. The food was hot, plentiful, and delicious. They serve both hard and soft ice cream, but I abstained this time. There are tables in the open and under cover. I heard this place was under new management and figured I'd ignore the bad reviews and check it out. A group of us ride weekly and we're always looking for a new place to visit. Before I list the aspects I was not happy with, I will say this. There is a large parking lot, albeit no lines, and plenty of picnic tables to sit at. The ice cream I got was good. The not so good: I asked if the clam strip sandwich was made in house. It is not. So I opted for the chicken tacos thinking, those should be good. They were not. After waiting an undue amount of time for snack shack basics with no one in front of us, we got our food. The chicken was overcooked, and served only with some chopped onions on a tortilla. It was served with runny sour cream and a tasteless salsa on the side. They were pretty bad. I also got a side of cheese fries. Fairly straightforward but the cheese was a bit chunky and in my opinion it was not worth the $4.95 for some fries with nacho cheese. Finally, several of us went for round 2 to get ice cream. I ordered a small scoop of peanut butter chocolate in a cone. Listed for $3.50 on the menu. He told me the total came to $4.65. When I questioned this the cashier did not have an answer. I asked if it was gratuity or a service charge and he just said tax. So I figured I'd just ignore it and move on. First time my order came out, it was wrong. Clarified what it was supposed to be. Second time it was wrong. Finally got it right on the third try. During this time several of my friends had ordered and all had the same issue with pricing. We finally figured out that we were being charged for extra toppings even though they were supposed to be included. (I was charged for reeces pieces even though I asked for chocolate peanut butter ice cream, a regular flavor). My friends all getting sundaes were charged for toppings that should have been included. Finally, I have to add that the food did not sit well with me. I have an iron stomach and could survive most expired food. And yet whatever I ate made it's way to the exit in record time. Dear management. Please train your staff better, bring up the quality of your food, and staff accordingly. read more

I've been going for 35 years. I will never go back. So a little history, the Ashford Dairy bar was owned by one family for decades, then maybe six, or so years ago they sold it. The new owner did renovations, and it was still good as ever. It's been sold to another new owner according to the sign, and it has tanked. First, they are only open until 8 p.m. on a Saturday night. Now I don't have a problem with that. If that's how they want to run their business that is fine, but I think it's just turning away customers. Having said that we got there 12 minutes before close for ice cream, and onion rings. I had to forego the onion rings as even though they were opened for business they closed the kitchen. That was literally the first thing the cashier said, "we're closed for food (despite the fact it's not closing time) and only open for ice cream. Who does this? You can literally leave a fryer on, and empty it last as it only takes three, or for minutes to make onion rings. Besides the cashier I saw three people working, but it was the cashier who was the only one doing any of the ice cream as it took the whole 12 minutes for a soft serve, and a shake. I was looking forward to my usual mocha malted shake. The person at the window handed me a "coffee" shake. I told them I asked for mocha (coffee ice cream, and chocolate syrup, or vice versa). They said oh yeah, it's mocha. When I got to the car to take a sip I could tell it was not. The milkshake was white. Not white with a little brown in it. It was white. I don't know what it was, but it wasn't mocha. I should attach a photo of the albino mocha shake. Maybe I will later. I wonder if there was even any malt powder in it. At that point too fed up to deal with any more nonsense my wife, and I just left. We had come from Manchester, and went back to Shady Glen where I got a proper mocha malted milkshake, and onion rings. I used to brag that they had the best milkshakes in the area. This used to be a great spot. I use to look forward to it after fishing on the Mt Hope river. But the food now is the worst. I got soggy onion rings and a clam roll that was over cooked, tasteless and cooked with grease that needed changing long ago The hot dog roll was too small and greasy. The choc. shake was ok tho. If I could give no stars I would! Took forever to order because staff was not coming to the order window. Then we couldn't order a hamburger, lobster roll (the reason we went there), or anything from the grill because the grill had been turned off. This was at 7:40 pm. They close at 8:00 so they close the grill early....I was told by an employee! REALLY??? When I worked at fast food, we were open and serving until the closing time, i.e., 8:00 pm and THEN we turned off the grill, fryer etc and cleaned for the night!!! After we got our food - fried only and salad, we had an incomplete order so I went back to the window so I could order chicken tenders - we got the fries. Then I was told, oh we just turned off the fryer so we can't make chicken tenders!! So let me get this straight, you screwed up the order and we NOW can't get my son's meal....ARE YOU KIDDING ME??? It could have simply been taken care of by turning the fryer back on. There's no way the oil had cooled off that quickly!! This was at 7:53....I told the employee that was ridiculous. And the salad wasn't good. I barely ate half of it and we were starving!!!! Should have gone down the road to the other restaurant!! I'm sorry to give a poor review but they should all be fired! It's by no means a 5 star restaurant, but I'm sure the owner wouldn't be happy to see his customers treated this way. You can't stay in business treating customers (who pay the employees wages) this way especially after the year so many restaurants have had! We supported our local restaurants during the pandemic to help them get through...and this??? What happened to the adage "the customer is always right"....that's what I was taught! OMG. My husband and I read the Yelp reviews and went there today on our way out of town. Never, ever again will I stop here no matter how hungry I am. The clams were small, I mean teeny tiny bellies, and there more more strips that bellies. Maybe 12 clams total for $21!!! Maybe 10 FF. The wait was 20 minutes for fried food. I have always enjoyed my visits to the Ashford Dairy Bar... until this year. They seem to have new employees (local high school girls) who are more than unpleasant. No Hello, no how are you, no response when you say thank you. Completely lacking manners and customer service. This year they changed their closing hours to 8:30, we didn't realize this past week because they always closed at 9pm. We were there around 8:35, we ordered our ice cream. Girl taking orders was extremely rude and when we walked out to go sit down the door was slammed behind us and locked. RUDE. Went back this past weekend and still just as miserable and rude. If employees are going to lack customer service and manners stick them in the kitchen or kick them to the curb. Food is good, can't go wrong with the soft serve ice cream and they are now starting to incorporate seafood. Over all i will come back when I'm in the area but I hope upper management sees this review and tells the girls in the front to smile and be polite. read more

We recently vacationed on Ashford Lake and this was one of the very few places to eat that was anywhere near where we stayed. We tried the steak and cheese subs which were nicely toasted but the bun was really the best part. The steak was kind of tough and very dry. Another day we also tried the chicken tenders, which were ok but also on the dry side. The fries were good and crispy on one day but chewy on another day. read more

We enjoy coming here for burgers, I like veggie burgers and they are awesome. We like that the menu is up to date, their service is very good and they will accommodate any change for something if needed. The parking lot is big and two sides to choice from for seating area. If they had white linen table clothes and table service (and craft beer) this would be a six-star review. I've been visiting Ashford Dairy Bar for years; last season they shut down and began a total re-boot, and the new, improved ADB is as good as it gets for a roadside stand. They doubled the size of the waiting/ordering area, installed lots of counter space, added lots of new goodies to the basic dairy-bar menu. It's a real oasis on the long, lonely drive along Rt. 44 between Hartford and Providence. Ice cream is still the star, with local Gifford hand-scooped available in lots of flavors, with lots of add-ins. Good ol' soft serve is available, too. They make some killer sundaes, milk shakes and frappes are great -- you really can't go wrong. Food-wise, they upped their game with phone-ahead pick-up orders. You can order dinner for the fam and they'll have it ready when you arrive. Even if you don't call in advance, items like Shepard's Pie, Mac & Cheese and others are available in ready made family sized take out containers. For a quick lunch, the foot-long dogs and big burgers are great (especially with a side of o'rings). It's a great take-out place, but there are also several picnic tables available, some under cover, some in the sun. Be aware, it's a seasonal operation, so they may not be open for fall leaf peepers. read more

Quality has slipped tremendously since last year. Kids nor us will go anymore. Not sure what happened yet very noticeable. Guess when you are one of the few choices in town you can grow complacent? Clearly choosing cheese burgers with two Different toppings. The young lady repeated order saying "two". We Paid at window we ordered from and went to wait at pickup window. When order ready, one was burger was missing. When mentioned to staff at pickup window, you would think they would communicate to the side the order was placed at and expedite order. But. NOOOO!!!! We had stand in line AGAIN to order what should have been completed. You would also think they would offer at least a discount, if not provide the missing meal for free to make up for the inconvenience and not being able for us to enjoy eating together. But yet again, nooooooo!!!!! After I had finished my meal, and my wife waiting in both lines all over again, the cheese burger she received didn't have toppings requested, included what we think were someone else's onion rings, and was dripping in grease....After all that, the burgers can be best described as simply just mediocre. Sweet potatoes fries were blah. And no one apologized or tried to make right the numerous mistakes made. Stopped on a drive today and saw the dairy bar with no one in line and ample signs for social distancing and wearing masks. The signage made me feel comfortable to stop and have my first ice cream of the season. Though the young lady at the window was masked, several of the young people working there were not- including the cook and the young lady making my ice cream. When I asked why I was to wear a mask and the staff wasn't the young lady who brought my ice cream - which I denied acceptance of unless someone wearing a mask made it - said they were not required to wear masks in the building .... one young lady also took down her mask - grabbed a paper towel - spit into it - and didn't wash her hands or put her mask back on... stay safe and stay away from this place ... read more

Stopped in the new ashford dairy bar and grill and was completely disappointed. The milkshake was aweful - lumpy, not mixed, squeezed Hershey syrup in tiny cup - young woman presented overfilled small plastic cup with some sort of green ink all over the cup - disgusting and unsanitary. When asked for replacement or money back got push back and unprofessional behaviors. She took the dirty cup served and literally put that physical cup into another plastic cup - stacked it, hence causing a greater mess. Was so upset with the lack of quality and customer service. Really surprised they would want a person representing their business that has no customer service skills nor manners. Other food ordered was piled upstairs n one another in a small box.
