Gayle wants a bike for Christmas. And not just any bike. It has to be the right color, have a "girl" bar and have thick tire for street riding. So as much as I'd like to surprise her with a bike and a bow under the tree, that's not going to happen, unless I enjoy seeing my Lovely Bride's disappointed face. When we were in Ashland last week, I walked Gayle over to Ashland Cycle Sport. Gayle was hesitant as she didn't want to lead anyone on regarding a sale. She also started to feel guilty about possibly cheating the State of California out of sales tax revenue when Cities like Walnut Creek needed the revenue. I simply told here that if she found a bike that that was the right match for her, we would buy it right then and there, and store it in back of our small SUV and take it home. It's easy for me to get intimidated at bike shops as it's a language I don't speak and I'm sensitive to the judgmental attitudes that are sometimes found within. That was definitely not the case at Ashland Cycle Sport. The Dude who met with us was both helpful and polite and did a good job running us through the various street bike and hybrid options. One downside of all this is that Gayle left even more confused about what she wanted. Well at least, I now know her boundaries! Thank You Ashland Cycle Sport for putting us on the right road. Checked in with these folks 90 miles into a 200 mile tour when I had a rear tire compromise. Excellent service and knowledgeable mechanics, lent me tools to change my tire and had a great selection of replacements for a smaller shop. Would def recommend and wouldn't hesitate to revisit. read more

I just joined Yelp to write a review for these guys. First off, I brought my bike there last year to get a new tube (this was before I taught myself to perform this operation, inspired by these guys' incompetency). When I got my bike back, the tire was on backwards, and they acted like it was my fault. Really guys, is it so hard to smile and admit that you made a mistake? Or to smile AT ALL? You are not too hip to be friendly. Okay, there was that, which was minor. Then I brought my bike back in several months later for a new change disc. I asked them to give my bike a once-over and see what other kind of work she needed. I expressed my undying love for this bike, and '84 Ross Compact Clic that I've racked thousands of miles on. They called me three hours later to tell me, "So, yeah, we looked at your bike and it's pretty much screwed, you're gonna need a new one." I was shocked and really sad, and asked why. "Uh, there's just a bunch of stuff that needs replacing, it's too much to explain. It's all, like, interconnected and it's just gonna cost way too much to fix. Not even worth it." I cried. But I didn't believe them. I took her to Ashland Bike Works the next week, where they gave my bike a tune-up, some new cables, a new change disc, and a new chain, and she runs like a dream. To think that the screwballs at ACS actually told me that I'd need an entirely new bike! I felt really taken advantage of, like they'd just assumed I was clueless because I'm a female (which was the vibe I got from them when I didn't know how to install a tube, and accused them of doing it wrong). Don't go here. Go to Ashland Bike Works, Those guys are honest, compassionate, and do a great job. Just to reiterate: Ashland Cycle Sport is a horrible experience overall. These guys are really nice and knowledgeable. I called to see about a bike fit because I had been having neck pain after rides. Scott engaged me in a very productive conversation about my bike and my set up. He suggested a few simple tweaks before I plunked down for a fit. Low and behold, I made the adjustments and no neck pain. 5 stars and I should probably deliver 6 beers. read more

Three different bikes here for maintenance, including one I purchased from them for a 30-day tune-up and all three bikes had to be taken back to get worked on again. Basic stuff too. Derailleur adjustments, brake adjustments, etc. Nothing so complicated it should take two visits. I think I will be looking elsewhere. Disappointing as the staff is helpful and nice, and the location is perfect for me. But not if I have to take it back twice each time. :-( read more

These idiots installed a chain and didn't adjust the drive train at all. Mechanic should be fired for being rude and bitter.

This small shop on Oak Street in Ashland has stood the test of time for great service and nice people who like bikes and want to help other folks enjoy riding. Many many years ago on one of our yearly visits we stopped in because I was having a terrible time with bike fit (I did not get the bike at Ashland Cycle Sport but a large shop in another state). They took a look at me on the bike and refit seat height and handle bars, suggested a new seat (I was on my 3rd try for a good seat). I was out the door with a comfortable bike at a more than fair price and the real test was the big smile on my face when I got back on the bike to ride it. It was like having a brand new bike. Over the years we've stopped in and have brought our traveling companions in for small things and adjustments and though staff changes, service has remained stellar. Just recently we've moved here and I've been needing more from my bike than I'm getting and want to do more rails to trails rides. (Hiawatha in Montana/Idaho on my current bike really beat me up.) I stopped in last week and talked to Ryan. I told him the troubles I was having with my bike (same one by the way) and the type of riding I wanted to start to add in. He looked at the bike, the gearing, and based on what I had and what I wanted to do recommended a 2017 Neko wsb. They didn't have the exact model in the shop but had be try a 2016 men's that was a good size. The test ride route suggested would test the performance improvement over my old bike...it passed that test and put a big smile on my face and so I ordered the model he suggested. This morning Jeff called to say my bike was in and set up. I went in and Rich brought out my iridescent white bike. He checked seat height and general fit and I got ready to ride it home. He suggested a change to my planned route which would keep me out of a heavy traffic zone. Pedaling away from the shop, I felt just like a kid at Christmas with her new bike. It was everything I was hoping for. I attribute the good fit in both model and set-up to the folks at Ashland Cycle Sport on Oak St. I was still smiling when I got home. read more

I've been in this shop twice, on Sunday, when no other local bike shop is open, with disabled bikes and no way home. Both times, I got immediate, friendly and competent service. Prices were a bit steep, but I will pay a premium for emergency service and rode away grateful. read more

My family had won a bike from the Ashland Fire dept annual raffle. The bike was donated from Ashland Cycle Sport. When we went to get the bike sized to fit me correctly, the guys from the shop had no idea what to do in regards to the bike raffle. One guy was nice enough to answer questions about what size probably would work, but we were told they didn't have the smaller bikes in stock. So they sent us to the Medford store. When we arrived at the Medford store, we were being helped by a guy who had me sit on 2 different sizes and back pedal. He told me that a 17.5 would probably be the best fit. I let them know I didn't know anything about mt. bikes, that I was used to riding on a little road bike, so I wasn't sure what a mt bike was supposed to feel like, but that the 17 felt big. Then we were told that the smaller bike was actually in Ashland, they wanted to know if we wanted to go back to Ashland to pick it up. So we opted to have the bike shop send the bike to Medford and wait until Monday or Tues to pick up the bike. We picked up the bike on Tues evening and the bike was enormous. I am 5'5 and they had me on a 17.5. I took the bike to a different bike shop to have it sized to me and was told that that particular size was definately to big. I called Ashland Cycle and asked for the smaller size that this bike was way to big and my feet could barely touch the ground. They told me to come down, they had one in stock. When I got there they had a smaller bike, that looked different, I asked if that was the womens bike and was told yes. So I hopped on it and rode it home. When I got home I got to look at it and it was a totally different model. And was a huge downgrade from the bike I actually won. When we took that bike back to the shop to get the actual bike we won, we were told that this was a big "hassle" and the manager was saying that the downgraded bike was the perfect size for me, and that he didn't know why they would have told me the 17 was a good fit and that they should have sized me correctly. Fortunatly for me my boyfriend knows alot about bikes and refused to settle for the different bike. We had won a Trek X-caliber 7 and that was the bike we were taking home. And they had the smaller 15.5 size built up and on display in the store. Im not sure why they just didn't give me that bike to begin with. I am really disappointed in the lack of service we received and that we were made to feel as though WE did something wrong and that WE were a big hassle (as the manager told us). When this could have been avoided if they would have just properly fit me for the correct size the first day I came in. And if this was their way to promote their store, they succeeded. But it sure isn't good PR. I will let everyone know how poorly I was treated and how it felt like they were trying to pull on over on me because I didn't know much about bikes. read more
