My sweet tooth brought me here recently. I like how the walls are decorated with kids' fan art. Workers were nice and attentive. Ice cream was pretty good. I got a double scoop sundae with two scoops of Nutella Chip. It was nice, but there wasn't much of a Nutella flavor; it could've been richer. The hot fudge and chocolate chunks helped make up for that, however. Almonds were a little on the bitter side. Not pictured are cups of black raspberry and dairy free pumpkin that I got for a family member; they wolfed most of it down pretty quick, lol. I was still able to taste them both and they were delicious. The black raspberry was smooth and you could taste the real fruit. I'm not a huge fan of pumpkin spice but that one was good as well and I liked that they had a tasty vegan product on the menu. Very good ice cream. I'll be back for sure. i've been a fan of Ashley's since moving to the area in 1980. Back when the link between Ashley and the dogs unique ability catching a frisbee was in the news. They have always been my favorite ice cream parlor. This sweet cream is magnificent, they're bittersweet chocolate is amazing, their coffee Oreo wakes you up, and the regular Oreo is a delight. It's simply one of the best ice cream is made on earth. If you don't get it, stick to Dairy Queen. We visited this Ashley's for the first time on our way home from dinner in New Haven. It's a small ice cream shop in a large Hamden shopping plaza. There is outside seating, but atmosphere is not a selling point. Service was friendly, with one hiccup. I ordered a sundae with mint chocolate chip, Reese's Pieces, hot fudge and peanut butter sauce. The server first added the Reese's Pieces and then topped it with the sauce, which seems like a unique order. After my sundae was made, my server asked if I wanted a lid. I responded "Yes, but on the side." I'm not sure what she thought I said, but she suddenly added more peanut butter sauce to the sundae. She again asked if I wanted a lid and I responded the same way. At that point, I could see from her reaction that she realized she had misunderstood my previous response and that I did not ask for more peanut butter sauce. It was a misunderstanding and not a huge deal, but it did throw the proportions out of whack. I fairly regularly order mint chocolate chip, and this was not one of my recent favorites. The peanut butter sauce was good, but it dominated the hot fudge. An ice cream sundae is always somewhat tasty, but considering that, this was one of my least favorite sundaes of the year because I didn't love the ice cream or how the sundae was made. For what it's worth, my wife gave her sundae (which had some sort of chocolate flavor and cookie dough pieces) Five Stars and I'm sure we'll return at some point because of that. A yummy ice cream joint in Connecticut that has a decent variety of ice cream flavors that you can get in a cup , cone , waffle cone . They also have frozen yogurt but try the ice cream first especially 2 scoops of different flavors on a waffle cone which I went with and glad I did. The Oreo and butter pecan with sprinkles on a waffle cone cost me 10 bucks and was worth the 1000 pennies . Ice cream is creamy and rich with a sweet after taste with no bitterness. Got a pint of Oreo and chocolate chip for later when I get home and keeping a cooler with ice in the trunk is another smart move in my part and I have many . This is my go-to ice cream shop in Hamden as it's conveniently located and they have all the flavors and toppings you could want. The only reason I'm leaving four stars instead of five is because they don't really have any very exciting flavors or great cone options. I was approached by the manager there, Taylor, who said I need to get my dog off of the floor. There are two questions that can be asked when it comes to service animals. 1)Is the dog required because of a disability? 2)what task is dog trained to perform? She asked neither. What if a blind man that has an 80 pound German shepherd goes in the store? Do they tell this man suffering from a disability as well To pick up the dog? The size of my dog is irrelevant and so is their policy. What if they had a policy to not serve people of a certain color? Federal Law supervise them. I carry federal Law service animal cards with my to educate people but I am never returning to this establishment and if you suffer from any type of disability I would hope you would join me. I am Also contacting the appropriate agencies to report this violation of my rights. Similar to other ice cream shops, this one provides water and courtesy cups. There isn't a public bathroom though so beware! There could be more seating areas but what's available will suffice for about 6 small groups. Overall, the ice cream was yummy and the serving size is average if not a little bit more generous than normal. The place is covered in drawings made by customers about Ashley's (and apparently it takes a while for your drawing to get up there) which gives it a community feel. I don't understand how this place has a 4/5 review on Yelp. Low expectations from the neighborhood, perhaps? I had the ice cream waffle sundae which consisted of two scoops of ice cream and three toppings. I picked the coconut and Heath bar ice creams and then opted for mini peanut butter cups, M&Ms, and walnuts as toppings. The ice cream base is mediocre and not very creamy. The coconut ice cream was very coconut-y, which is nice. On the other hand, I can't even tell you what the Heath bar ice cream tastes like. I definitely didn't get any toffee in there. The waffle bowl itself also had its problems. The bowl was stale and not crunchy at all. My friend had the waffle cone, and her cone also wasn't fresh. Maybe they should consider keeping their waffle cones and bowls in air-tight containers. This area isn't the driest after all. I'm not the best at geography, but people tell me there is an ocean or something nearby. Soooooo humidity control for the waffle products should be a consideration. Overall, I wasn't impressed by this place. It's close to my domicile, but that bad waffle bowl was just too egregiously bad for me to revisit this establishment. I have been a fan of Ashley's since I moved to New Haven in 2012. I usually eat at the New Haven location, but they serve the same ice cream and have similar ambience. This store has nice tables for families to share their ice cream. They have fantastic sundaes and the like, but the ice cream is best tasted straight. My daughter and I order the Black Raspberry (yes, I know it isn't a real flavor, but it's still tasty). They have no sugar added versions, which are fine, but hard to compare with the original. The staff is always fantastic. When my daughter's date left her before she realized her battery had died (!), they let her hang out until I was able to get there. (Who raises their kids to not wait until their date is safely in their car, engine running, before leaving!). I have to avoid foods that contain gluten, and I have been able to successfully eat their simple "cream" ice cream. The trick is to ask them to use a clean serving spoon, and to open a new one because of cross-contamination. The wait staff are extremely young, and quite inexperienced when it comes to this type of thing, but whoever trained them trained them well enough to take these types of things seriously. The place itself is simple, very pleasant, and full of excitement because so many people love ice cream. I love the little kid drawings. I love the aura of this tiny place, it's been around for a while, for good reason. It's been around since WELL BEFORE the whole trendy beardy hipster "take over the world because we know better than you" crap has been happening. Yes: so one can say this is truly pre-hipster. Yet, it set the tracks in motion many years ago. Thank goodness it's not one of those places the kowtow to every little trend that comes by. They are just good. Many years ago, when I could eat anything, I used to eat all sorts of wonderful flavors that they had. My personal favorites were their pistachio, chocolate chip cookie dough, maple walnut, and their simple vanilla. It's not easy to get the vanilla right. But that's based on my experiences many years ago. So, I often ask my friends what they think of the flavors now. And, from what I hear, their other flavors are still to be worshiped. I believe them. Hamden boasts an incredible amount of great ice cream for such a little place. Though I would never turn down a trip to any of them, Ashley's is still my favorite . Unfortunately for me (but great for them) many people seem to agree as there is always a crowd. The staff tends to be the high school crowd, but I smile through it because those were once my friends gossiping as they scoop loads of delicious ice cream. Most ice cream shops are staffed by young kids so just know that within minutes you'll have your delicious ice cream. The large chalkboard of flavors will always have something for everyone. The solid standbys get rave reviews, but don't discount the seasonal offerings either. I have been known to come in the winter just to see what's new. Their oreo ice creams are definitely a crowd favorite. I have friends who swear by the long standing coffee oreo, but my favorite ever was strawberry oreo. My husband and I went out on a date night tonight and after dinner we stopped at Ashley's ice cream on York street. It was approximately 10:45pm and they were wiping down the counters. My husband asked out load if they we closed. We got no response so we proceeded inside. Once inside the young lady behind the counter had a immediate attitude. My husband and I looked at each other and proceeded to look at the ice cream to figure out which treat we would have tonight! Well the young lady behind the counter eventually said without looking at us or turning around to face us "let me know when your ready to order". We asked a few questions and got more attitude from the young lady. Once she was done scooping the ice cream I asked her if she had a attitude with us because we came in and they were close. This young lady proceeded to tell me that she was allergic to my perfume and that's why she had the attitude. I was in complete shock. First because I can't wear perfume either, I wear bath and body works lotions. So I proceeded to tell her that I completely understand about your allergy but that was very rude to say, I also told her that there are so many people that will come in and you are not going to like all of their smells but your job is to still try to find a way to provide excellent customer service! I will be going back to speak with the manager and I will be writing to someone high up in the business.
