We asked a nice pedestrian and he told us where to go (at the lookout). OMG I was like, this is it??? Looked like cement drainage from the river. I like hiking. A lot. And I like hiking at new and different places…read more Charlestown State Park is....okay. They have some really nice trails, spread out and across a large area. There is plenty of parking. And I believe that camping is an option. You have to pay to get in, which is fine. But I am highly annoyed that out of state cars have to pay more. Once when I went though, it was in the off season and there was no one working at the entrance gate. We were hoping to pay with a card, and it appeared to be an honor system for paying the $9 on days when the park is open, but no one is working. I was enticed by the promise of Rose Island ruins (a former amusement park/resort. Not actually an island). But as interesting as it sounds, it was disappointing. It has been all cleaned up and sign-ified and it is more meh than I had hoped. I would probably come back more often if it was more like $5 to get in. But with Louisville's copious parks, state and otherwise, and Bernheim about the same distance drive, I'm inclined to stay on my side of the river.

It's nestled back into nature and right on the Kentucky River of course. We are full timers and have been living here for 4 months and we are going to be sad to leave. The campground is filled with everything you need. There's an awesome common room with tables a fridge stove TV/Cable also A WiFi Cafe (just ask for password) and laundry room. So many things all there for your use. There's also an awesome men's and womens restroom that they just redid the floors in and are now painting! Two showers each is very convenient. If you want a fire pit by your camper just ask! Most people here have their own. You may not be parked on the river. But it's just. Short walk and benches are available for enjoying the views. It's a very short walk to the water from anywhere in the camp. Most of the campers here are share holders and only come for the weekends so during the week it's very quite and relaxing. Many weekends there have been live bands and so many other fun activities going on! Every is usually friendly and polite. Don't forget to wave at your neighbors! Charles, Rus, and another gentleman (sorry I forgot your name) do an amazing job to accommodate you during your stay and work hard to make the campground what it is. Don't forget the office where you'll check in and such has items available for sale from sweets to t shirts.

Campsites were close, but still had ample room to socialize. Grounds were well maintained. Nice, quiet, and peaceful location for a quick stay or extended trip. Would definitely return. Most impressed with all the staff and campers that made us feel like family. Since we were without a truck for 6 days, we were offered rides, food or anything we needed. One long term camper, Chuck offered us his truck for the day! In traveling, you don't always look at the physical amenities a place has to offer, but the personal connection that the "camping family" provides. Thanks Angie, Russ, Chuck, Kelly, Bryan and all. While our truck was delivered back to us, the kitchen slide broke (on our new camper) . Sadly, our long awaited trip to Maine was cancelled as we had to return home. Still waiting for repairs.

It was nice to have AC in August heat though! We didn't put our air mattress on the bed platform because ours is a queen, not a full. It was also nice to have our air mattress closer to the AC unit! Picnic table outside, works great for our family. We were basically in the cabin to sleep. Bring bikes, kayaks, air mattress, coolers, bedding..... Shower houses and restrooms are decent but can be a walk from your cabin, depending on where you're located. This cabin is the "Persimmon" cabin. We like seclusion, so it worked perfectly for us!

My parents are staying at the camp ground. It's very nice and clean. We went and spent the…read moreafternoon hiking with them at Rose Island. It was really neat! It's a very steep walk down and then back up. My dad and I both have bum knees and the walk down was hard on our knees. It says in several places that trail 3 is longer but not as hard, so we decided to take trail 3 back. I don't know who decided to play a mean trick on people and say trail 3 is easier to take but man they have a sick sense of humor! The mail trail is about a mile down a wide paved road. You could easily drive down it. Trail 3 is a windy, steep up and down, rocky, rooty, dirt trail that is also very narrow. It is not in any way shape or Form easier than the main trail. Oh and did I mention it is about a mile and a half or more? So it's harder and longer than the main trail . See the pictures. We did see more cool stuff on trail 3 than the main trail though. Rose Island itself was really cool. It would have been an amazing place in its hay day!

I went to the ladies room right after someone finished cleaning, and there was no toilet paper. The floor was wet from washing and it still smells filthy. When I went to take a shower at night, two of the three ladies showers did not work and one of the men's showers had either extreme amount of mud or human feces on the floor. It seems that a bunch of people live here extended stay style. Nothing green in sight. Not sure what they do with the money they collect. On a two month trip this is my only bad review.

This campground was such a hidden gem…read more We got there about 9P and the lady that manages the pool actually offered to open up the pool and turn on the water for the slides (which were amazing) for our boys! This was the highlight of their week! Tim was helpful too since this was our first time renting an RV. Such a wonderful evening! We will be back!!!
