Our waiter was polite and our water was always refilled promptly. The horse paintings on the wall and candle on the table added a nice ambiance. The menu said vegan option under the item I wanted to order. I prefer to eat vegan when I can, so I ordered the hummus and naan, vegan. They brought me cucumbers instead of naan. I thought it was a simple mistake and asked for the naan. I was told I ordered vegan and that the naan was not vegan. I feel they should properly list what they are serving on the menu. The menu did not state that. Why list that menu item as a vegan option if it is not vegan? They did bring out some naan when I told them I'd like to have naan even though it is not vegan, but I absolutely hated having to take time away from our dinner celebration as I was guest and felt rude complaining. I do not know if I was charged extra since someone else at my table grabbed the check. In my opinion the restaurant was very over priced. We had reservations and the location of our table was next to a the walkway/hallway. It was very loud at times as people lingered and walked past and I was bumped numerous times by other customers moving about and the staff spoke loudly lingering at times behind me. read more

Overall Ashten was great. Ostrich meatball appetizer was very good; served with lots of Mediterranean accouterments. I had the fish and chips which were exactly what I was craving. My friend had the Salmon, which he said was probably the best he's ever had. Cocktails were on point, although there was a little snafu with my friend's Rob Roy, at first. We sat outside on a gorgeous November evening. Ambiance was wonderful. Tried the Reuben egg rolls and they were as good as the other reviews had suggested. I tried the mahi mahi special which was served over wild mushrooms mixed with roasted potatoes. (Photo doesn't do it justice, every bite was divine). Hubby had the bacon bleu burger with skinny fries (or, as the French would say, "pommes frites"). Never say never, I guess. We went back for New Year's Eve and had a much better experience. Starting with the staff telling my wife on arrival for our 6:15 reservation that our table was booked again at 8:15. We had no problem with that and appreciated the information (unlike our last visit). The food ranged from very good to outstanding - the star being my wife's salmon. My chicken "shanks" were tasty and the sides excellent, but in the end they're still chicken drumsticks (which, to be fair, I knew when I ordered them). Drinks and dessert were top notch. All in all a much more enjoyable meal. read more

Over this past weekend, I was visiting my dad who is stationed nearby. We initially weren't going to go to Ashten's because we couldn't get a reservation (it's very popular!). However, we arrived at 5pm when they opened and were lucky enough to get a table! Important to know - there's 2 separate dining areas. The main dining area which is located in the front when you walk in. And the tavern dining area which is pictured below. The ambiance in the tavern is EVERYTHING. It's cozy and moody. I would 100% recommend dining in the tavern vs. the main dining area. Outside of the ambiance, the primary reason this restaurant is so unique is their food menu. It's farm to table - so everything is fresh and locally sourced! Our table got "The Original Reuben Eggroll" to start... they were easily the best I've ever had. Incredibly tasty and no grease! For my entree, I got burger that was on special (I can't remember exactly what it was called) and it was absolutely delicious! You could definitely tell it was grass-fed beef. Not to mention the fries were equally as delicious. I'm sure anything you get on the menu is delicious. This spot is a MUST try if you're in Southern Pines. read more

My (New Years Eve) hats off to this award winning fine dining restaurant! Every single detail about last nights experience was stellar. We were seated in comfy pub style chairs near the antique bar - so cozy and warm. Dark ambiance and equestrian classy decor, red wall paper and paint - done right. The New Year's Eve decor and staff dressed in glitter made the evening special. Ordered a salad, crab cake appetizer first. Best crab cake ever! Whatever they did to prepare the fresh caught salmon was truly amazing- ordered it med rare, slightly crispy skin in a very light teriyaki, divine sautéed mushrooms and rice. Served in handcrafted bowls. Coffee served in hand made ceramic coffee mug also. Chocolate cake with carmel drizzle was not overly sweet - luscious. Great friendly service. This is now my fav eatery in North Carolina!!!! read more

We were there for my mom's 95th birthday and they were out of everything we ordered ie: all burgers, fish and chips, and one other popular item. Service was slow and we had to ask questions regarding the timing of the food. They didn't have grapefruit juice as a side shot to go along with her grey goose vodka drink. Wow.... And holy crap!! I've been wanting to hit this place since moving back to NC. It did not disappoint. On a date, we both had the crab cake for appetizer (it's a gluten FREE crab cake!!!!!!). and she had the gluten free veggie burger sliders and I had the salmon. Both were very good. My beautiful date is gluten free and I have a tree nut allergy. The menu was very easy to navigate with these challenges - the staff is very knowledgeable on the menu so ordering was as easy as it has ever been for us. If you are a whiskey/bourbon fan - have the old fashioned. Possibly the best I've had in NC. She had a cider - a blackberry stargazer cider. She really enjoyed it. The decor in the dining room was nice - but check out the bar (sorry - "the pub"). Very cool. I would say this isn't optimal for kids - just given the space between tables and menu choices (there might be a kids menu - I didn't ask). This is more of a friends or date place. Ashten's is still fantastic. Having been some time between visits, I was happy to make a return trip for a great meal. I would have to normally go to Raleigh to find a restaurant of this quality, so Southern Pines is lucky to have this an a few other local restaurants to pick from. Though small, the menu is diverse enough to match anyones tastes, and they have a few specials to go with. I chose the filet special and could not have been happier. Pros to the visit were the friendliness of the staff, the locally sourced items, the biscuits (who doesn't love mini biscuits), and meal itself. One of the most tender filets I have had in some time and cooked perfectly. The desert was a big warm chocolate chip cookie with fresh creme; enough said. If I had any con it would be that the interior shows some wear from the volume of business they do. I imagine it will need a refresh somewhere down the road, but it did not detract from the meal. read more

Absolutely amazing! And do get the duck! Had dinner with 2 girlfriends and my son. The dining room was lovely with a classy old world feel. The menu is thorough and tempting for all palates. I have allergies to onions and garlic- a massive pain. Chef made it simple to enjoy whatever I wanted from the menu- what a treat! The attention to detail in the flavours of sauces to compliment the proteins was outstanding- and the plating beautiful. Highly recommend- I can't wait to back and eat the duck again!
