Asia House is a great option for Asian food in Highlands. Ordering sushi in the mountains sounds questionable, but it was delish! We ordered takeout on a Saturday night on a holiday weekend and it was ready within 30 minutes. I think the sushi was better than the Chinese food, but I would certainly eat here again! read more

Food was not so good sushi was not what I had ordered and sat with the preparers over a half hr before they served it to me! While other members at my table were served. The restaurant is old and not kept up. Needs to be brought to the life furniture needs refurbished! read more

Husband and I came here last night to eat. This is our second time returning. Food was great! I had the chicken stirfry udon and also an avocado roll. My husband got the general tso chicken and an Alaskan roll. Super impressed with the sushi, clean cuts hood ratio of filling to rice. My wife and I were near Highlands yesterday evening and decided we didn't want to go home and cook; so I looked for a great restaurant nearby. I wanted Chinese, so I was happy to find Asia House so highly recommended. We placed a to go order for Thai veggie spring rolls, steamed pork dumplings, General Tzo's chicken and chicken & broccoli. Everything was fresh, hot and delicious! The service was friendly and I found the restaurant cozy and inviting. We will certainly enjoy dining in sometime, but for right now, their to go is fantastic! I really try not to give bad reviews about food unless it's really bad or seems unsafe. This place is clean on the inside, the staff was kind on the phone when I ordered my to go order and pick up was easy 15 minutes later. I got back to our cottage 5 minutes later and this sushi is... so bad. I got the spicy tuna and the spicy salmon roll. It was warm which seems unsafe being that it's raw fish. The "fish" was ground into like a gelatinous paste before it was spread() in the sushi roll. I honestly don't even know what they did to get this consistency? I love sushi and even cheap grocery store sushi would rank higher than this unfortunately. I didn't have any of the other things on their menu so maybe just steer clear of the sushi Well off to try and find something else to eat for lunch. read more

We've been coming to Highlands for a long time, this is the first time we saw Asia House, so we opted to try it. It was after 8pm on a Thursday before we were to depart to go to Tennessee (near the end of August 2019) and the Hubby was really excited to try the Chinese food. We had no issue with not having a reservation. Only 1/2 of the eatery was seated. We were seated at a just bussed table, and placed our orders immediately. I wasn't feeling well, so I ordered an appetizer and soup as my meal, the hubby got one of their house specials (three entrees on one plate with veggies) The food came out and it was tasty. The soup, wanton was delicious. The appetizer I had, the goyza, was delicious! It was cooked to perfection. The hubby's food was good, if a bit bland. We would certainly come back. read more

We used to like the restaurant. We took out some items for dinner. One item was NOT edible, Pad Thai. For the first time in my life, I went back to return and got something else out. Otherwise, I would be starving. Although I brought the horrible Pad Thai they cooked, they tried to charge me for the new item. This restaurant will not survive in any bigger town. #1, food was great. #2, woman working the front desk with the short haircut, we walked in at 9:11pm, and the website specifically states you close at 10 pm on Tuesday, so your extremely negative attitude towards us from the moment we walked in was completely uncalled for. If you want to claim "the kitchen closes at 9:30" and laugh in our faces when we come in to pay for food from your establishment, then change your close time to 9:30, or better yet, 9, because you obviously are not willing to serve guests passed that time. #3, when we got up and left with our togo orders at 9:34, people were still enjoying their meals, as they should be 30 minutes before closing time. First the good. Nice atmosphere inside. Clean place. Just a bit old, but not off putting at all. Staff was friendly, well dressed, professional. There was a bit of a language barrier, but then that's something that make the place more authentic. I had the "Happy Family" dinner. Sea food, chicken, beef, vegetables.... It was recommended by a shop owner two blocks away. Normally eating sea food in the mountains is something I shy away from unless it's a higher end place where I know they have good sources for the catch. Good vegetables, cooked but crisp and fresh looking. The brown rice was very bland and sticky. Usually "sticky" is great, but this was almost a pasty stickiness that reminded me of rice that had been left out too long. ...Shrimp was old. It had the taste of ammonia... and was almost sickening. I would rate it as being of "interest to the health department". The chicken was thin, which is OK, but also tasteless and fatty. The beef was thin and just managed to clear the "OK" hurdle. Scollops seemed to be real, but had very little flavor. This was not the worst meal I have had. It was the worst meal I have had in the state... The worst meal in the last 5 years... Just not good. Basically it was not edible. We mentioned this to the woman manning the front door as she walked around asking how things were. She seemed puzzled at the word "ammonia", she understood "bad". She apologized, then left. In a minute she returned and said thanks for telling her, they had a new source for their fish and meats. It would have been good if she had continued to say "let me refund the cost of these two meals." (We each had the same meal)... But no, there was no such offer. The meal was over $80. Bottom line, they should have offered something to assuage two ill looking customers. Comp the meal, offer a substitute, the next one on us... anything to recover from a meal that was we feared going to leave us with food poisoning. read more

The posted hours on the door said "open until 10pm", which matched the posted hours on yelp. Being that LITERALLY no other restaurant for a 100 mile radius was open, and we got there at 9:30, you'd think they would serve us. "Nope" the man explained. "We are open until ten but our chef went home". So I couldn't tell you how the food was, but the atmosphere was dingy and it was a seedy looking place in an alley. They clearly don't adhere to their posted hours so if you are out of town travelers like us, don't expect this to be your go-to if you get in late. read more

Came here with my honey, as my dad and stepmom recommended while we were here. Place, from the outside, didn't look like a Japanese restaurant nor did the inside. More like country dining meets sports bar meets sushi. We got seated at a table (didn't see any booths) and were greeted not as promptly as I hoped. The waiter wasn't that attentive, which is part of the low rating. The wine my honey ordered was a HUGE portion but it was the worst tasting Chardonnay I've ever had. The wine looked almost too yellow in color. The misu soup wasn't that great either. I really wish places could step up their soup game! Our sushi was pretty good though, and they did a great job of piecing them together to look very delicious. On a scale of 1 to 10 for the sushi freshness, I'd give it a 7. The sushi was the best part of the meal, which is what we came here for. However, pricing was still absurdly high for ok sushi. Then again, it's the only sushi option in the Highlands. The manager did stop by and suggest some rolls for us, which was nice but he didn't really understand that we liked spicy rolls. Oh well, it's the thought that counts. Overall, ok experience. We were pleasantly surprised to enjoy fresh sushi in the Western Carolina mountain town of Highlands! We were greeted with the 'Reservation Only' door sign on this holiday night due to reduced pandemic staffing. We were aso greeted warmly by mask-clad owners and staff, and seated promptly. After ordering cocktails from the specialty bar menu, we perused the generous menu filled with Sushi and Thai selections, including mouth watering full color photographs of tempting dishes. Our party of four had a array of crispy spring rolls, delicious and well presented tuna, salmon, tempura shrimp and California roll sushi and various sashimi pieces. My personal favorite was the large steaming bowl of Red Curry Thai chicken with crisp vegetables and a choice of white or brown rice. The white meat chicken was thin sliced and yet tender- a testament to the chef's skills. The fresh vegetables included an abundance onion, carrot, red peppers, eggplant and pea pods. A squeeze of fresh lime (from my Cosmoplitan cocktail!) added to the brightness of the dish while toning down the heat just enough to keep me coming back and wanting more of the creamy, spicy red curry sauce. Overall, the food was delicious, well-priced, and served promptly and with smiles (under masks which is hard to do!). Our evening celebration ended on a pleasant note when the Asia House owners, Tom and Josephine, personally delivered an unexpected generous bowl of green tea ice cream as a complimentary Happy Birthday gift to our guest of honor. Make no mistake, the food here is good - it's just not great. There's no competition in Highlands for Asian cuisine, so if you crave Thai food or Japanese food, this is it. That said, our lunch today at Asia House was okay. Nothing to fault and little to praise. I had chicken curry. It came with a choice of white or brown rice. And also a choice of miso soup or a salad. The miso soup was pretty tasteless. There were plenty of delicious chicken pieces in the chicken curry, but the vegetables lacked flavor. The price at $9.95 was fair. I did enjoy the iced tea, though, as it was served in a real glass not plastic, and was also reasonably priced at $2. Sophia had chicken with mixed vegetables. She said it was slightly sweet, but otherwise okay. Service was attentive. If your expectations are realistic, you will enjoy your meal here. Just don't expect too much. I must say, however, the sushi at Asia House is supposed to be pretty good. I heard this from a fellow diner today. We'll try this establishment again soon and see if our opinion changes. read more

Awful! Yes expected the overpriced food because your in Highlands but this was literally the worst meal I have ever had. Sushi was warm and paste texture. Don't! please don't get the $5 ginger salad. The dressing is apple sauce or something very similar in texture and taste. Yum yum sauce is actually not what you would usually get. I describe it as hot sauce mixed with Mayo? I'm honestly scared to go to sleep tonight because I'm thinking its very possible I get horribly sick before morning. $100 dollar take out mistake! Please trust me on this and keep moving. I LOVE the food at Asia House. I have never had better Asian food anywhere in rural America! I consider Highlands to be very fortunate to have this quality of food available here. I have been coming to Asia House since it first opened. My husband and I do not eat sushi, so I can't say anything about that, but the Chinese and Thai here are better than anything in this part of the South. Anything with shrimp is excellent! The owner drives to Atlanta to purchase lovely, fresh Gulf shrimp. The difference is noticeable. Their chicken dishes are also very good. They make a mean Singapore Noodle and the LoMein is excellent. The only reasons this doesn't get five stars are: 1) the prices are a bit high, 2) You have to work hard to get them to understand if you want something spicy. This is my favorite place to eat in Highlands because I love ethnic food! read more

We just had a wonderfully delicious dinner! The service was very fast and friendly. We ordered chicken fried rice, beef udon noodles, and thai mango chicken - everything was perfect. The mango chicken was especially tasty, with very tender chicken and a delicious sauce. The portions made the price worth it - we left very full!
