Asian Direct is a decent Vietnamese grocery store in Savage (of all places). For those who live in the south part of the metro, it's an oasis in the middle of a snowy dessert. I can't even imagine a life without fish sauce. (Actually, yes I can. And it's apocalyptic.) After visiting with my family during Thanksgiving break to buy ingredients for two dishes (bun bo hue and banh khot), and spending a solid half-an-hour there, I got a pretty good grasp of the place. My assessment: ***** I. PRODUCE: Unlike traditional grocery store aisles (both American and Asian) where produce is laid-out on shelves, they brilliantly refrigerate all the essential staples: Thai basil, lemon grass, green papaya -- you name it! The main problem, though, is that most of the produce, at least when I visited, weren't fresh. Greens are wilted. Others had rotted. A few things seemed completely inedible. For example the banana blossoms we bought had their tips rotted. We had to buy them anyway, because no other options are nearby. But a couple goods were solid, like the Thai basil. (Make sure buy the entire herb, not only the leaves, or they'll charge you $20.99 a pound). The green papayas were fantastic, too. II. MEATS: Not the largest selection of meats, because they're mainly tailored towards Vietnamese dishes. More specifically, we bought a bag of pig feet and large hunk of cow throat (nam bo). Yeah, Viets are gangster like that. Even though you're probably disgusted right now, everything appeared to be very fresh! III. DELI: They have pretty average banh mi (from California), several rice snacks, a decent selection of Asian drinks, tasty sesame balls, and other goods. Everything was adequate. IV. OTHER TIDBITS: - They have a robust rice selection, including Forbidden Rice (black), which is one of my favorites. (Much love to the brand with the three Asian sistas on there, too.) - Their noodle, bean, and flour aisle is all in one and organized very well. Make sure you have a good squat, though, so you can reach those bottom shelves. - Frozen food section is about a fourth of their store, but you shouldn't eat that stuff anyway. V. PRICES: With the exception of United Noodles, Asian grocery stores, like this one, are very affordable. VI. OVERALL: If I lived in the south part of the metro, I would probably visit Asian Direct on the reg. However, if I lived in a different region, I wouldn't go out of my way to visit since they don't have a special ingredient or awesome selection of produce. read more

We just bought a pack of Okra at this store yesterday night and I just saw mold in the middle of the pack today, 24 hours later as I'm about to cook it. I live far away so I called the store and wanted to come in tomorrow to simply exchange it for another one, not even to return it. They said "NO". Said that anything wrong with the vegetable cannot be exchanged or refunded and that is the store's rule from the store owner, Ryna. I spent my money to buy something from your store and when the vegetable can't even stay fresh for one day and has mold on it 1 day later and yet it cannot be refunded or exchanged? That's BS. That just shows me how bad and how unprofessional the store is. Makes me really think about why I or anybody else should buy any produce from this store compared to other grocery stores around. Next time people, if you want to buy any "fresh" produce at this store, check clearly and take special notice to see if that produce is already degrading and has any chance of growing mold. Heck, if need be, open the pack to see if there is already any mold inside before buying it! I would give it big fat 0 star for fresh product and exchange policy if I could. read more

Since I eat so much, I need to have 2 asian grocery stores( Groceries of the Orient is the other) in my life...and they are only 4 blocks apart. No, I am not kidding... In all seriousness, not all stores are created equal. Asian Direct Oriental Market(ADOM) is definitely the cleanest and bigger out of the two. What I like about this store: * Vegitables are better organized and CLEANER! * Bean sprouts seems always fresher and last longer in my fridge. * Oysters, clams are huge and very reasonably priced. * Most fishes still have their heads on them. If you don't know what to do with it, then we can move on... * Got white and white/stripped bass! Why I go to Groceries of the Orient(GOTO) instead: * Catfish here is on the small side * Don't take Discover card...Yes, they do take visa/master cards. * Close a lot earlier than the GOTO. In short I love both groceries because they all have their own + and -. Given a choice, I would take this place because the fresh Asian vegetables are much cleaner and organized. read more

This place is a Vietnamese store which is fine but there are some Chinese products that I like that they don't carry. Honestly there aren't any awesome asian grocery stores in MN so I wind up feeling deflated and annoyed at every place I go. For MN, it's decent. You'll get your basics. I do wish they had a better candy section. It would be nice to have more Japanese hard candies and a bigger selection of Chinese prunes too. I'm lucky to live by two pretty sweet Asian markets - this being the bigger and newer of the two. Every so often I indulge in goodies like $2.50 to-go orders of shrimp spring rolls, 89 cent/each massive live oysters, and last but certainly not least - $10.99 per lb. live LOBSTER! The lobster alone is a crazy good deal. The man and I had a post NYE feast for $39 that included two 1.5lb. lobsters, 6 massive oysters and two 99-cent boxes of these highly addictive Hello, Panda chocolate-filled cookies. This market has everything, so dust off that stack of authentic Asian recipes and put this place to the test. You're guaranteed to find every sort of noodle, curry paste, spice and sauce under the sun. read more

I was pleasantly surprised at how neat and clean this store was given all the other asian grocers I frequent. Huge parking lot and they seem to have less foot traffic than Groceries of the Orient, but that could simply be due to the time I went. FYI: $10 minimum for credit cards. read more

As far as asian stores go, it wasn't bad. The floor was dirty and the shelves were messy and cluttered, but it's a small place and I wasn't walking in expecting Lunds &Byerlys. The organization made me blink a few times (bleach across from instant noodles in one aisle, diapers and tea cosy-ing up together in the next), but the only thing that really got to me was the smell of the place. Most asian markets have an odor to them. It's not a shock. It comes with the small building space combined with meat, sea food, and produce. It took a good fifteen minutes to adjust to the smell, but to be perfectly honest, it made me never want to eat. Overall, the place carries just about everything and has a decent selection for brands and products. Pricing is very reasonable, service has to be sought out because it's small and only has 2-3 workers a day, but is usually helpful. This store isn't a gem for sensory reasons, but it gives you what you ask for in product and price. read more

Now this place is amazing with their food. We come here to Shop for the Vegetables,The Meat and sometimes the Dim Sum. Now how many places have Dim Sum you can buy and make at home. I was leery of entering the market after reading the reviews. The other markets didn't have what I needed so I went for it and I was very pleased. Good selection, found what I needed. 3.5 stars huge and overall fairly clean and organized. they carry just about everything you're looking for in an asian market I always find it interesting when people review the banh mi sandwiches pho shops and smaller grocery stores. A little Asian grocery store that sells basically everything an Asian store should have. They have a little area in there that you can order food from. I usually get the papaya salad, sticky rice, fried chicken, and beef jerky. Decent food if you don't want to drive to Mpls. The worst customer service I have ever experience in my life. They are rude to their customers and lie to get there way. They wanted to sell me an open pack of gum for my child. When I didn't want it the owners son went off on me. And the owner did too. The owners son is the ruddiest and most disrespectful young guy I have ever came across in my life. Very crappy customer service from the female owner. She yelled at me that I tried to pick the spoiled mangoes out of the box to exchange for good ones. It's her job to filter all the spoiled mangoes, not mine but I did it for the boxes that I was buying. There was no sign that customers can't exchange bad mangoes. I got mad and told her that I would not want to buy spoiled mangoes if she didn't let me pick the bad ones out of the boxes then she said "If you don't buy it, someone else will.". Wow, I can't believe those words came out of the owner's mouth. She acted like her store is the only Asian market in MN. The owners of other Asian stores are friendly and helpful, none of them is rude like this owner. Besides crappy customer service, this store is selling a lot of expired can foods, tofu, rotten veggie. One time I reported expired tofu and can foods, the people who work there said they were going to let the owners know. I came back and still saw expired products. I honestly wouldn't even give any stars in possible! The store itself is good, with well equiped products and prices. The staff are helpful as well, with the exception of the owner(s) of course. In a nutshell, they are snobby people who think their supermarket is the best in the country. Just because you own the place, doesn't mean you can be rude and arrogant to their customers. I've personally had many experiences where I wasn't treated like an actual customer. Let's keep in mind that businesses NEED customers, we customers can go to a different store and buy their products. For example, I was ordering food from their deli, and the woman making the food didn't even know how to speak English! She needed another woman to translate for her, and somehow the order was mistaken for a more expensive kind of the same item. I was given my order and as I was walking away, the owner ran after, took the bag OUT OF THE CART and ran off, leaving me to hurry after her. She just took the product that I ordered and was going to pay! After going back, she said it was made wrong, and urged me to take it. What the...? It's the employee's fault that I didn't get what I wanted, and now YOU WANT ME TO PAY FOR HER MISTAKE? I strongly don't believe that this is right business practice, treating their customers like crap. There are many more times where I've had similar incidents happen. She yells at children who haven't even matured or are 4-5 years old for touching individually wrapped desserts. What about the adults? They're poking and seeing how the quality of the product is...and she does nothing. If we can't touch the products, how are we supposed to buy it? Never shop here again. read more
