After a long day decided to try this establishment out in lieu of cooking dinner. At first the restaurant appeared to be decent enough but once being greeted and seated I visited the restroom which smelled of urine and it was very unclean. The appetizers were good we had the gyoza and calamari both of which were good alone but the sauces were extremely salty. After ordering our entrees the waiter reappeared with our soups two of which she set down without issue while the third she spilled onto my hand and leg after which she asked if I was ok to which I replied no it burned my hand and her response was only to laugh and walk away. While I'm not a fan of being scalded with hot liquids her response was more of the issue. Then came the endless absence of drink refills I believe at this point she didn't want to come to our table. The very friendly service of this staff really sets this place apart in addition to the really really tasty and fresh sushi. We arrived after 9 for dinner so unfortunately the tempura ice cream was unavailable, but our server went through extraordinary effort to provide us with a dessert that we very much enjoyed. But this was really, really good sushi. We ordered the chirashi (sashimi over rice) and a sashimi sampler - both were fresh, excellent, and even presented artistically. We also indulged in two special rolls; while I am not a huge fan of special rolls (I like my sashimi and sushi plain, thank you) they were both excellent. When we came, they were running a 50% off special off of most of their menu items; at full price their food would be amazing, but with these discounts I felt like I was stealing from them. It truly was an amazing gastronomic experience. The Sea Bass roll is it absolute treasure with it's pink soy paper rap. The Sweetheart roll is what drew me in from a picture posted by a fellow yelp reviewer. The Tiger roll was amazing. The true star and absolute surprise is the homemade sauce for the Tiger roll consisting of garlic and jalapeños and a few secrets, it is out of this world. The chicken tempura roll also tasted good, although the orange sauce on top overpowered the flavor of the sushi and the cream cheese was too much for me (I'm not a huge fan or dairy). The tempura roll also smelled heavily of oil...which was a little odd. I didn't use any ginger, but the wasabi was not very spicy so I question its freshness. My mom, however said the ginger smelled moldy and her sushi tasted stale so she threw hers away. She refuses to eat here again. My wife and I love Yelp because it pointed us to Asain Pop. It was so well priced for lunch I kept waiting for the hidden cameras to pop out and say it was a joke. According both to a friend who is in Ocala often and most of the Yelp reviews here, Asian Pop is supposed to be the best sushi in town. It seems people fawn over this place, but honestly, I don't know why. The interior is odd: it appears the owners really tried to make it attractive but it is somewhere between some very nice touches (a ceiling panel that changes colors, the sushi bar itself) and aspects that look as if they were just thrown together, such as the smaller tables and their chairs which appear to have been pulled out of a church basement--institutional and clumsy in appearance and not fitting for a restaurant desiring to aspire to high standards. The sushi itself was overall unremarkable. For one, my salmon nigiri and yellow tail roll both were tough--the cuts of fish were actually overly chewy and even tough. The eastern roll (I think it was call, much akin to a Mexican roll) was fine though. The spicy dumplings were very good, too, which brings us to another aspect: the waitstaff were obviously Chinese and the dumplings a typical Chinese, not Japanese, preparation. This is fine: it's a pan-asian fusion restaurant, but I'd like to see them perhaps step up the Chinese menu if that's where they have greater expertise. The sushi--especially the raw sushi--while perfectly safe to eat was just lower quality in taste. I felt in the cooked dishes we had there was an apparent confidence missing from the raw sushi. Perhaps we were there on an off day, but I doubt I'd go back. From the reviews I was expecting greatness and simply found it pretty lackluster instead. read more
