Essence! I'm honestly lost for words.. (in all the most amazing ways!) I recently moved to NYC and have been searching for a place to go for my waxing.. I've been to a few salons/studios and nothing felt right. I've been from queens to the UES.. Either their technique, their approach, their "bedside" manner, the products they used.. etc etc just didn't work! I combed through yelp reviews and instagram and came across Essence and was really excited to solidify services with her! I went in for a Brazilian and underarm wax and half way through the waxing I honestly forgot that I was getting waxed! Essence is beyond kind, and makes you feel comfortable immediately (not in that cheesy.. small talk waxer way) but her energy and presence is effortlessly calming, friendly, and I felt like we could talk for hours. If you are looking for someone to wax who is through, gentle, meticulous, and sanitary.. I say book with Essence. I usually don't leave reviews but I felt it was only fair to the next person to leave this one. I went to Marion to have my locs highlighted and left with an entirely drastic, poorly integrated color that looked like someone just poured bleach on some of my locs. It was really poorly done. To Marion's credit, she fixed it after I returned an hour later but I still did not get the look I hoped for. So, just as a precautionary suggestion: If you have locs and want them highlighted, go to someone who is a colorist of locs. Marion is very good at other hair styles, but I would not go to her to have my locs colored again. I respect Marion's work in general, but do your research. read more

A lot of people think that facials and waxing are expensive af when they're not when you're investing in yourself. I absolutely love going to Essence for my facials and now my waxes. She is super patient and answers the questions that you have. She makes the entire experience super comfortable, you'll be excited to make your next appointment. Depending on where you go, the feeling post-wax is unbearable. But not with Essence. You'll damn near forget that you got a wax until you look lol. Midway through the wax I almost forgot I was getting waxed. The wax she uses isn't as harsh as nail salon wax. She is absolutely amazing. Her energy is comfort inducing. I've only been here once, by my expectations were blown away in my visit. I booked an appointment for a customized facial with Essence. Upon arrival, she greeted me with a welcoming, warm smile. I've gone to appointments where stylists and the like are overwhelmed and it shows in their face? Therefore a not so pleasant greeting. Once we got settled, Ess asked me what results I'd like to see in my skin, we discussed it, then she got started. This wasn't my first facial, but the best one I've ever had. She was very gentle with my skin, yet was a beast with the extractions. After everything was said & done, my skin just felt nothing short of amazing. Due to the steam used during the process and my naturally kinky hair, my once silk press was now an Afro. Rena, was available to do a silk press, so I got in her chair. I was nervous to 1. Get a silk press done back to back 2. Go to a new stylist, because you know..not everyone cares about the health of your hair. But Rena does. From the way she washed my kinks, the condition, to even the way she detangled my hair I could tell she was trying to cause as little breakage and pain as possible. Let me tell you, WHEN I WALKED OUT OF THAT SALON, and my skin was glowing and hair flowing...not even Jesus himself could have told me ANYTHING that day! I got a customized facial with Essence today and the experience was amazing as usual! Essence is educated, talented, and knowledgeable of all things skincare. She does not use harsh products and the extractions were painless! I left feeling relaxed and my skin felt refreshed and rejuvenated. I have gotten facials at other spas that left my skin feeling and looking raw and painful. This was by far the best facial I have ever gotten. I've been getting my hair done here by Shakeda for the past year. She is amazing! Very personable and every talented, as others have stated. I travel all the way from an eastern part of Brooklyn to the shop in Harlem and it's worth it. The prices are also great compared to shops that charge way too much to blow out natural hair. I follow Essence on Instagram. As a Black Woman, it was ideal for me to learn skin care from someone who is also black and is educated on what is necessary to care for black skin. After months of learning everything I've been doing wrong with my face from her daily skin care tips, I decided to get a skin consultation with Essence. As soon as I walked into Askeya by Marion I was greeted by everyone in the salon. From the patrons, the owner and others that work there. Seeing all that black girl magic and energy I knew I had come to the right place. Once Essence was ready for me, I was escorted in. We were able to talk about my skin care routine, issues I believe I had with my skin, and ways I needed to correct what I was doing to my face. I received a full sew-in that made my hair look and feel like helmet. It was stiff & tight. I left it in for less than 24 hours. I had my sister take down and she notice that Marion had seen in a mesh net that would invariably become tangled in my natural hair as soon as it grew out. I got a Brazilian wax by Essence and as always it was wonderful! I have followed Essence everywhere she goes for her A+ service. I am so thrilled that she is in Harlem now. She takes her time and makes the experience as pain free as possible. She gives good tips (take a deep breath) and she double checks her work. Additionally, she makes great conversation and I found myself forgetting that i am in the middle of having my lady parts waxed. Before I knew it, I was finished. She uses the best products and can explain all of the ingrideients in each. She made recommendations for products I could use for ingrown hairs as well as foods that would support better internal health. If you are looking for a personable waxing experience, definitely go see Essence @ Askeya by Marion. The shop itself is beautifully decorated and all of the stylists/ other patrons were warm and inviting. The waxing area is clean and well lit. The prices for wax services are comparable to any big wax company, but the beauty is the money goes straight into the hands of black women and to me that is super important. This review is for Laid and Slayed by Franni B. I scheduled my appointment on Styleseat for a sleek ponytail. Before I booked the appointment I communicated with Francine via text, I inquired about the ponytail. Anyway, I booked the appointment for 3:00PM. I was a little frustrated that I didn't get in her chair until 5:30PM. Prior to sitting in her chair, after about an hour wait, she asks me did I need my hair washed. I said no. After another hour she sends the other stylist to get me for a wash, again my hair was freshly washed and conditioned. Once in hair chair she proceeded to do my hair. Yes, I did like the ponytail, I was particularly impressed with how she was able to sleek my hair as if I had a perm. I thought it was odd that she had little to no conversation with me being a new client and all, but I just thought eeh, maybe she's responding to my body language that displayed I was clearly frustrated with the wait time. To sum things up, I had to take the ponytail down the very next day as I was in excruciating pain. I paid $65 dollars for the service and left a 18 - 20% tip despite the 2 1/2 hour wait. Also, the hair that I purchased for the ponytail was about $30 which is no good anymore because of her process of gluing the ponytail down. I'm just writing to inform other potential customers to BEWARE because I have a bald spot the size of a quarter from her pulling the ponytail so tight. She literally slayed my hair follicles where the ponytail was placed. NEVER again will I patronize her again. Oh, for some reason, I can't leave a review on Styleseat but I haven't given up. Since then, I've lived in several different cities, and visited many different hair salons, and the truth is, nobody does my hair better than these ladies. They are simply the best. We love Marion and all the staff there. We take our 6 year old daughter there and the staff is so sweet, patient and caring. My daughter at first would cry and fuss but now the crying is less, and Marion who does her hair is so wonderful. I would highly recommend this place for hair. i called in advance to explain that i had long, natural (not permed) hair and asked if they could handle that. The woman I spoke to said that it was not a problem at all because they "are all professionals at the salon". I arrived with my hair COMPLETELY DE-TANGLED. When i emphasized three times that my hair is already detangled all she says is "you didn't have to do that", and "your hair is so pretty". She then takes me over to the shampoo basin to totally RE-TANGLE my hair worse than it ever was before i combed it myself. This was so that she could then proceed to rip my hair out with a comb and blow dryer (with brush attachment) in her chair. The actual salon is pretty shabby. My stylist was very nice though. This is not the place to go if your hair is 'au naturel' or if you don't really have time for your stylist to take a break to breastfeed their baby. read more
