$6600 and 5 empty visits later, asmar's AutoCare still failed to identify the fact that I needed to replace my alternator which was attached by a bolt snapped in half missing a nut. My battery was ready to go as well, didn't seem to know that? Cracked this replace that new hose here there blah blah. Luis is a reassuring salesmen but don't be fooled by the automated fake concerned texts and emails. Absolutely do not recommend. There was no phone conversation, you guys called me and I told you off after ripping me off. You fell incredibly short And cleaned me out for over $6K. Don't trust their judgement or inspection of your vehicle, they will up sale you and then will do nothing to save you money... this what happened to me, I brought my 1997 Honda civic in for smog inspection and discovered that my car was overheating and the mechanic didn't want to continue the smog, so I decided to let them diagnose the problem and they came back with this outrageous price to fix my vehicle, they told me I needed a new engine $5000, then said I needed a HeadGasket $2500 but they can't guarantee the work since the car was old. So I just paid full price for a smog that couldn't be done and they replaced my radiator cap and tune up my radiator fans for $335 that included the smog that could not complete, I got a second opinion and found out my engine was fine and they did not find any water in my oil so my HeadGasket was fine ...all I needed was a heat sensor for my coolant system and a new thermostat $180 now my car working properly and I called Asmar to tell them and asked for retake of my smog and they told me I had to pay full price all over again if I want my car smog, I try to be reasonable and ask for discount since I already paid for the smog and they told me NO, full price or else....they try to over charge me for my car and then misdiagnosed by telling me my engine needed to be replaced and come to find out that my engine was in good condition...so beware of this Auto Repair Shop read more

In Feb of 2023 I needed to bring my car to a repair shop through AAA because I had a coolant leak and was far from home. I had it towed to Asmar and he diagnosed a an expansion tank failure. He also said the thremostat should be replaced. The parts he used were crap. The car was running OK but I noticed it was leaking coolant slowly and after having to top off the tank a couple times, I brought it into a local shop that I normally use. The expansion tank was leaking fluid from the cap. It wouldn't seal. I'm now getting a code that the thermostat has failed. I highly recommend you research the parts being used prior to letting him install them. Go with Waller thermostats and avoid the hassle of premature failure. read more

Had a new rattle under the rear of my Rav 4. Called Asmar's and they said to bring it in now so they could look at it. They quickly put it up on a rack and inspected it. Drove the car back to the office. They said I had bent something when I accidently ran over an asphalt lane divider and that pushed the muffler out of position. They straightened the bent metal and put the muffler back where it belongs. About 15 minutes of their time and NO CHARGE! A shop I took it to before I called Asmar's said they could look at it December 16th! Asmar's made my holiday much happier! read more

Researched the many mechanics within 3 miles walking distance of my home in Spring Valley and went with Asmar's based on reviews. The reviews don't lie! Yes they are a bit pricier per labor hour than other local mechanics. However, they are very thorough, professional, clean lobby, and in my experience very honest. I spoke to both Jason and I believe the owner Ryan and they were informative and professional. It looks like the owners have changed over 30+ years and yet the reviews have been consistently good for a reason. I had went in with an overdue smog registration and of course my "service engine soon" light on. With a 14 year old car I knew there'd be more issues, but what I appreciated is that they clearly explained "here is what to fix to ONLY take care of that engine light, and here are the strongly recommended issues, and then here's the stuff that you need but it can wait." So, they gave me three different options truly based on how much I could afford. I went with the second, and plan on going back for the rest of it. I appreciated that they broke it down to "RIGHT NOW TO PASS SMOG, very soon before your car has more issues, and hopefully you can take care of this other stuff within the year." After moving further from my last trusty shop, I am SO happy I found a new go-to mechanic. read more

Interior was thrashed upon returning of my vehicle, no technician claims they did it but there were no signs of breaking in and the car wasn't in any body else's possession except asmars. They diagnosed the problem fine and were cooperative during that process so I'll give them 2 stars for that. Good price. Relatively fast service. However.... not the best area of town and the seating area was very dirty so I stood outside while they serviced my husbands truck. During that time (approx 45 minutes for a Smog) I was approached by several homeless people. 2 of which were men and they were kind- paying compliments- but a gal alone, it sure didn't feel safe. You'd think someone working there would walk out and help a girl! They didn't pay an ounce of attention and I was the only customer at the time. (Many Other vehicles there but not any customers present) I would probably return - but I'd be very mindful going there alone as a female. read more

James and Andy were great to work with and more than willing to share some resources my wife might find helpful as she continues working on the car. Most impressive was how they only had to be told once that this was her car for them to talk to her instead of me. They diagnosed my engine light problem and replaced the mass air flow sensor. That did not clear the catalytic monitor. They drove it for a few days and then found my bank 1 cat was going bad. They put in a lot of effort and time to try and get it smog ready. Thanks for all your effort. read more

These guys were going charge me $1200+ for a evap and maf fix and had the nerve to say, "We still don't know if this could 100% fix your issue". Asmar's worked with me, over numerous trips to finally get the emissions to work properly. Couldn't be happier with their work, their professionalism and their quality of customer care. Do not come here for an engine steam clean. I was told by my mechanic that I needed a steam cleaning because part of my engine was leaking, but they couldn't tell exactly what it was due to it being dirty. They recommended that I get it done at Asmar's because it was only $150 and they know the the guys there. When I showed up, the front desk guy told me that it's usually $190, but they're going to give it to me for $169.99. Whatever, I get it, everyone is trying to make money. I payed $170 for an engine steam clean, assuming it would at least be done right. I was wrong. I took my car back to my mechanic because they were going to fix the leak and they told me that my engine is still absolutely filthy! So what did I pay $170?? To top it off, they told me this isn't the first car to come back to them from Asmar's that hasn't actually been cleaned. They may be great at doing other things, but do not waste $170-$190 for an engine steam clean here. read more

Their labor prices are above average and parts marked up about 100%. In short dealership like prices. The customer waiting area is VERY small and the shop is in a sketchy neighborhood. There's not many places that do engine bay cleaning, these guys do. I had pretty low expectations going into the job, I figured they would just blast the grease off the bottom. Avoid dealing with Vick who works there. I drove there and then I received a car that I had to be two away. I went there for engine wash and irresponsible Vick who waited on me broke a different part in my car that would cost me over $425, if he were to fix it. My car stayed there four days and I saw how irresponsible Vick was during the entire process. Even the way he picked me up to go receive my car and in the way he arranged for my ride he was a complete jerk. Stay away from Vick. Horrible work. I took my car in about a month ago because my check engine light turned on. Also it was making a loud fan noise. I've had to take it back numerous time and each time I had to pay more. I've gone 2 different times and spend over $1,500 and my check engine light is still on and still making the same noise. So sad they take advantage of people or maybe they just don't know what they are doing. Ima make some calls and see who can help me out with this. My Grandchilds was told by aaa auto club that Asmars was aaa recomended as a honest shop. So she went there and her car stopped running in front of their shop.They charged her $162.50 to test the alternator.Then another $162.50 to install a new one and they charged her $304.20 for .THEN I could not believe they charged her $81.25 to charge the battery.for a total of $734.03. these remanufactored alternators cost them approximately $88.00 I would never send anyone there again. read more

After 2 other shops totally failing me and my truck, and about to give up after spending thousands of dollars, I decided to give it one last shot with Asmar's. No doubt, this was a tough job -- but Asmar's stuck with it, and they delivered my truck back to me with zero leaks and every last issue fixed. Not only does this shop have integrity (which is hard to come by - a lesson I learned the hard way), but they have the skills. My experience of the great people at Asmar's: Lynette (front desk) is a champion of the customer, has awesome listening skills, documents your concerns, is prompt, and friendly . . . you can't get this anywhere else. Dave (lead technician) really really really knows his stuff. Here's the list of fixes on my classic pickup truck: 1) Fixed -- Stubborn Oil Leak (rear main seal and oil pan). 2) Fixed -- Heat Soak Issue 3) Fixed -- Carburetor and Tuneup (throttle linkage, new choke, tuning). 4) Fixed -- Turn Signal Switch 5) Fixed -- Fuel Sending Unit 6) Fixed -- More engine stuff - too much to list. This truck runs sooo gooood now! Ryan (owner, operator, technician) CARES. Ryan will do everything possible to take care of the customer -- this I know. He only charges what is fair and stands behind his work product. You can not find stand-up guys like this. He's done a great job at this shop to create a culture of integrity and taking care of the customer. And there's more people down there that help get you where you need to go. (As a side Asmar's has the ability to legally steam clean your vehicle's engine compartment. Only a couple other San Diego mechanics have the ability of providing this service - without harming our environment.) After seeing so many wonderful reviews on here I started bringing my car here. I never know who I can really trust and who I cannot, so I go by reviews. Everyone here is really nice and they have a courtesy shuttle that if you are close enough they will give you a ride to your destination. Yesterday, I needed to get to Rady's to visit my sick patient and it was too far. Which I understand and not a big deal but was hoping they would. Anyway, my first visit (months ago) I ended up with a bill of thousand or two. I can't remember exactly how much but it was really expensive for me. Somehow, I all of a sudden had a huge major problem with my car. Second visit (yesterday), I went for an oil change and all of a sudden, I have a $500 problem for a power steering leak in the return hose. I decided to take my car in for a second opinion to a place a friend of mine recommended that does car work himself and he is a car enthusiast. Both my friend and this mechanic shop cannot find the leak anywhere and said its bone dry. They checked over everything. Asmars also charges $119/hr. in labor for the problem and the place I went to charges $80/hr. So even if there were a problem, the labor cost is a lot at Asmars. However, no leak is to be found. Not only that they gave me a courtesy right at home some water and then also they pick me up, it only took like couple hours for them to steam clean the truck .they are so sweet and so polite I will give them a thumbs-up. I had recently taken my car in to get a diagnostic done and i dropped it off and 2 days later i got the call that they couldn't figure out what was causing the issue my car was having but they did say my battery needed to be replaced and it could be the cause of the issues. They said if i bought a new battery and i was still having the issues to bring it back then he said it was no charge for the diagnostic since they weren't sure if the battery was the true issue. Well i changed the battery and haven't had any issues. I was shocked that they didn't charge me when i was expecting to pay for the diagnostic. As a Honda loyalist for 10 years, I've previously taken all my rides to the dealership for almost everything. From experience, I've felt more confident in the quality of service than going to Pep Boys, etc., even if I was paying premium price for parts and labor. All of this changed when my driver's side window conveniently broke after I got off work the other night. I immediately called around for quotes tomorrow morning; the first shop I called was the local Honda dealership. I got the receptionist and left a message for the tech to call me back. The second call was to Asmar's; Linnette answered the phone and gave a reasonable quote on the spot. I didn't hear back from the Honda dealership until four hours later, and only then did I get a broad guess-timate of the labor and parts quote. I brought my car to Asmar's this morning, and they promptly got to work. Linnette got some fresh coffee brewing for me, and they were done in 2 hours. The total cost for the repair was about $200 less than what the dealership quoted, and they also did a thorough inspection of the car for any other issues. Ryan does a great job of explaining anything that his crew found, and it's an honest inspection. In other words, you don't have to worry about getting upsold for work that you don't need. That kind of honesty goes a long way with me, especially in doing business. For the TL;DR crowd: above-dealership quality work and service for half the price.
