Although the intentions of this company to place furry creatures in safe forever homes, their vetting process is racist and unfair for anyone unless you are a white (surname) and live in the middle village area. My niece who was never a pet owner was called within the day. She has an italian last name. We both applied the same day and I never received a call despite owning a dog for over 17 yrs. Please note I am an home owner with a private yard. Another family member attempted to adopt a pet and was discriminated because of her age, and living location (Bklyn). Bobbi truly need to work on how they process their adopters. There are plenty of good people wanting to give furry family members a wonderful home. Looking for a pet, please go to our local shelters. I found Bobbi via Google when I was trying to rehome my 9 yr old Yorkie Pharaoh. I began working away from home and I tried multiple dog sitters/ walkers but Pharaoh simply refused to go with them. Having him at home alone for 10 hours wasn't something I could live with. This was a rather difficult decision and making sure that he wasn't going to end up in a kill shelter and would land with a loving home was paramount for me. I reached out to Bobbi via phone and her assistance shared he would have her contact me. Later that evening, I got a call from her. She asked me to submit a pic and information about my dog. I complied and she was very responsive. Over the next couple days we went back and forth with the logistics. She reassured me that she did have space for him, that he would be cared for and that she wouldn't let him go until she was convinced he'd be well taken care of. We made a plan for me to bring him. Bawling, I showed up on 9/18/23 to surrender him. Listen, I read all the reviews and I heard the complains about Bobbi and how she needs to work on decorum and phone manners. I'm not making excuses for that, however under the slightly abrasive demeanor, she has a heart for these animals and handled both me and Pharaoh with care. That day, she hugged and consoled me and took Pharaoh and immediately gave him kisses. I filled out paperwork and gave her all his documents (vet, microchip info, registration with the city) and the surrender fee. Bobbi gave me updates on him and after two weeks Pharaoh was placed with a retired family with other Yorkies who could give him the care and attention he deserves. Seeing him with them was bitter sweet but I knew it was the right thing to do. Bobbi was kind enough to send me a photo of him when I was struggling with missing him. My family and I are looking to surrender our pet. While she is loving, she has become destructive and is urinating everywhere. We have two young children and we're doing what's best for them and our pet. We gave this shelter a call based on the reviews but now I see why they are at only 3+ stars. My husband explained the situation and off the bat he was told that if we give her to a shelter they will kill her. My husband was shocked at the tone of the woman he spoke with who continued to tell him to read more information, to "clean the litter box" and that "it won't cost you anything" to research. Basically ended the call with "not give her away she doesn't deserve to die." First off, as a pet owner, I am SURE all research was made before coming to this last resort, so the condescending tone is highly unnecessary. At Bobby and the strays I witness an intense amount of negligence alongside blatant racism and overuse of superiority. Bobby, Genene and Ron use bully tactics on their employees to keep them quiet about the malpractices in the establishment. It is very clear that people who are their friends or top donators are prioritized in comparison to the normal adopter. They love to belittle pet owners who cannot afford to take care of their animals, however do the bare minimum themselves. They hoard donations and supplies until they expire and state they need donations but never make full repairs. Dogs are never bathed or properly groomed until it becomes unbearable for the animal and their smell. The only employee with an ounce of dignity is Juan, who sadly endure the brutal attacks by these people for the sake of the animals. Bobbi and the Strays are full of some of the kindest, most compassionate people -- with the cutest dogs, too! I had been looking to adopt for awhile, but never felt truly secure until I stumbled upon BATS. Each time I visited their Queens location, their staff was eager to answer all of my questions and concerns. I immediately fell in love with River (previously Beethoven), and met Louise for a home visit two days later. On the day I picked up River for his official adoption, Louise left us a bunch of toys, treats, food, and a brand new blanket. It's obvious how much she cared for him. Even after I brought him home, Louise would still happily hop on the phone with me to answer any of my dog-care questions -- knowing that I was a twenty-something and bringing home a dog was a big step for me. Fast forward three months later, and River is most definitely my best friend! Thank you, BATS, especially Louise, for your guidance, thoughtfulness, and patience in facilitating the adoption. I'm giving this place two stars only because of the fact that they take in strays and have ONE employee who is a doll, the others are rude as can be including the owner. Now I do understand how a job dealing with different personalities/behaviors of animals can be stressful at times BUT they chose this profession. Amazing how the reviews are five star or 1/2. I have been watching a particular dog on PetFinder for weeks and I finally decided to pursue him because I already have two of the same, I am 96 miles away, I can give this dog the best home ever, I love his face. He has cataracts and diabetes and I wanted a little more information about his medical requirements so that I could determine if I was a good candidate to administer medical care. I sent an email, which also included photos of my two dogs, I have excellent references, so I asked a few questions. I almost immediately got a response that this dog will not be adopted out of state, and none of my questions were answered. This dog has been in their care for one year and four months in need of a home, but I am thinking that his foster care is not ready to give him up. I don't know for sure, but if that is the case, shouldn't they make a commitment and adopt him? I sent back another email and asked for Bobbi to answer my questions, and this email went ignored. I don't know how these rescues work, but I am beginning to think that the ones who send most dogs out to fosters are just about a paying job. I'm thinking that if this Bobbi was around a lot of dogs desperate for a forever home, she would be more compassionate, be nicer to potential adopters, and allow adoptions withing 100 mile radius. I appreciate anything that she is responsible for, but at this point I can only assume that she treats most people the same, like dog poo (s##t) UPDATE It is now 24 hours later and I finally received a response From Bobbi and her whole attitude seemed to change. In fact it was like dealing with another person. She gave me all the reasons that I needed to understand the special circumstances around Tiger and him not being adopted out of state. She said that he was blind and needed two injections daily for diabetes. The listing that I read initially stated that Tiger was just recently diagnosed, so I don't see how he would need two injections at this time. Also there is a video on PetFinder and I assure you that he is not blind on that clip. I just upped the one stat rating to three stars to give Bobbi the benefit of doubt, but no matter, she need to learn the appropriate way to deal with people. I say this because there are many other reviews that state same. I am guessing again, but I wouldn't be surprised if she read my YELP review then decided to respond to me without being offensive. If she is reading this, I hope she understands that I am a dog lover and I was hurt by her initial response when all I really wanted to do is was give a needy dog a great second chance. Went with the intention of potentially adopting a new furbaby. I went out of my way from North Brooklyn to make my way down to see who was up for adoption. I showed up an HOUR before they supposedly closed The staff inside had the doors locked and lights off. I waited for a few minutes and the 2 staff members noticed me but completely ignored my presence and began to let the dogs out of their crates/cages. I'm an animal lover and owner, I've volunteered and put on events for shelters. I completely understand the animals need time to run around and sometimes you need to close early. But you're telling me the staff couldn't be bothered to take 1 minute to let me know they were planning on closing instead of giving me a stupid look and turning their backs to the door? There are plenty other shelters i'd rather go to that actually want their animals to find loving homes. read more

I am a NYS licensed veterinary technician with over twenty years of professional experience in addition to decades of pet ownership (of many species.) I find it distressing that so many of these negative reviews are because the -people- somehow feel they weren't treated special enough, or fast enough, or something. I would often visit the kitties after my workout at NYSC. And when we lost my girls at 21, we stopped in to fill out an application "just in case." You can guess where I'm heading... a week later, after a home visit, we adopted a young male and an older female cat (who had spent most of her life in the shelter.) Was their acclimation smooth as silk? Heck no. I'm a trained pro and thought I could handle anything, but we still had adjustments to make. But 4 months later and the boyfriend and I love our babies to pieces. I really worry that people looking to adopt an animal thinking somehow Bobbi and the Strays has a crystal ball with all the answers (and all the loot.) Trust me - breeders cant predict how big the puppies will grow, but you think somehow shelter staff can predict this? The cages are spotless and the animals are well loved. The volunteers are dedicated and patient. They are trying their best to empty an ocean of strays teaspoon by teaspoon. If you think adopting an animal is all about you... I'm suggesting you reconsider pet ownership. If you' are willing to do whatever it takes to rehabilitate an animal in need, I suggest you stop in and maybe meet your next love. read more

If I could leave less than one star I would. This place is run by people who choose what home pets gets solely on gut feeling. They have all of these elaborate steps before you are even able to meet an animal and make you jump through hoops when in the end they just end up choosing a family based on how they felt that day. If you are looking to adopt I suggest going to Northshore Animal League as they actually want their animals to be adopted and don't place judgements on families by how they felt that day. We were dissuaded from a dog we were interested in several times and told that they're were plenty of other animals up for adoption - and we were discouraged for being excited about adopting the pup we wanted immediately. We also overheard the workers being rude to people on the phone and picking and choosing who they wanted to even allow to come in and meet the animals over the phone. So some people were told animals weren't available just because they did not want that person to apply for that animal- without any rhyme or reason whatsoever. 10/10 would not recommend! Try Northshore - much more helpful and cheerful. read more

First of all, I didn't adopt a dog. I have no intention of adopting a dog, I just like visiting shelters and watching/playing with the dogs. When I went, the cats and puppies were all in the small room. The bigger dogs must've been stashed in the back room or something. I walked in and no one really offered to help me, it didn't exactly look too busy. There was a gated area for the puppies. It was right next to an outlet and a pit bull puppy was licking whatever was plugged in. Pets might be the first concern, but safety isn't. Update: There are no bigger dogs. So, I love that Bobbi and her organization cares for animals, I personally care more about animals than people. However, back in 2001 I attempted to adopt a dog, and she gave me a hard time. Just last month, my parents attempted to adopt, and she gave them a hard time. Both my parents and I ended up buying dogs rather than adopt, and I have to say it's seriously upsetting when you try to do the right thing but get grief instead. My parents are huge animal lovers and have a home update with 6 acres for the dog to run around. I have always had two dogs at a time. Over the past decade, I have adopted four dogs from BATS. One was a senior that was overlooked due to her age, having a lipoma and no teeth and the other had major medical issues. I loved them and spoiled them rotten until they passed and now have two more from there. I didn't find them to be rude or the process complicated. I've tried adopting a dog from another place (very well known with celebrity spokesperson) and was told that I could not adopt because I work. Reality is most people work and BATS understands this. I filled out the application each time, did a family visit to make sure the dog was compatible with all household members as well as our other dog and then a home visit was scheduled. I truly think this shelter needs to be looked into. They have cats there that people want to adopt that have been there since the spring that i know of. My friend tried to adopt two dogs that we saw being walked outside and they wouldnt even let her see them. They were condescending and so nasty to us. We tried hard to adopt. i have tried to adopt two kittens from there and was declined. I have had cats in my life since I am 5 years old. I presently have an 18 year old cat. I was declined. I even spoke to Bobbi herself with her smoking raspy voice and she was as nasty as any human being can be. My vet office called her too. They are living off this shelter. The more pets they trap in that house of horrors the more donations they get the more cigarettes they can buy. I wish I knew who i could tell to get an audit of what is occurring there. If you're looking to adopt, this is a great place to find the perfect addition to your family! It breaks my heart into pieces to see how cruel and insensitive some of these reviews are. This is a volunteer-run, no-kill shelter that is doing the best they can with their tiny budget and neverending supply of dumped and unwanted souls. It seems like everyone who left a negative review doesn't understand the way pet rescuing works in NYC. As a foster mom for the ASPCA, I can tell you that this adoption agency does not accept direct intakes - so please don't dump an animal with them. Instead, contact your local rescuer (not an adopter) that is ASPCA-affiliated and willing to get the animal spayed and vetted at the ASPCA. The concept that someone would be mad that a shelter wouldn't just take an animal off their hands like a piece of unwanted furniture saddens me. read more

2 years ago we adopted a kitten from this shelter and we love her beyond words. This past weekend we went to find our next furry baby and applied for a puppy. The manager Andrea said she would be calling to let applicants know when the decisions were made. Come to find out the puppy was adopted by someone else yesterday. First, I am thrilled the dog has a great new home. I hope she has a wonderful family life, BUT that doesn't make me less unhappy we aren't the family she gets to live with. BIG PROBLEM HERE... I posted a comment about being sad we weren't picked on this groups PUBLIC Facebook page. Imagine my complete SHOCK and utter offense when the MANAGER called MY HOME to accuse me of being unfair and childish for my FB comment!! You know what lady, you don't know me. You have never asked my opinion on anything. You JUMPED ON ME soon as I answered my phone! That's why I hung up on your butt and told you we'd never be dealing with such a childish person or place again!! Don't accuse me of "not being happy for the puppy" when you don't know JACK about how I feel on the matter. It's a MASSIVE abuse to use information on a client application to call them at home for no reason beyond being CRITICAL OF THEM!! You will be reported for this behavior to all required sources; of that be absolutely assured!! I walk by this place 2-3 times a week when using the NYSC gym in the same shopping center. I often see the little dogs and cats watching me as I walk by, quietly sitting there in their cages. Sometimes I see the workers walking the dogs, and I swear one time I saw a dog smiling while he was being walked. I was going through the reviews, and felt sad when I saw this place had several reviews that were less than perfect, and let me explain myself why. I have personally worked with an animal rescue organization (not this one) and have fostered over 6+ cats, helping them find homes, and finally adopting one myself. I know how hard it can be to find a home for these little sweet guys that just want to give all the love they have in their hearts to their respected owner that takes care of them. I hate the idea that a bad review on this place may make someone shy away from walking in because these animals that are in the store aren't trained to be part of a welcome committee or to answer your questions. Their only hope is that the humans there do that for them, and unfortunately humans may not always be perfect at doing this. I'm writing this yelp review not for the workers which personally I haven't interacted with, but for the sweet homeless animals that are in there wishing you will walk in sooner than later and take them home with you. If you are able to adopt a dog or cat, you will find yourself feeling rewarded every single day. Pat, they keep the larger animals out by JFK. If you contact them I'm sure they'd be happy to have you come down and take a look around. I've adopted a large dog from them and it was a great experience. They care about the dogs a lot and provide a lot of support for adopters after the pet has left their care. The volunteers out at JFK were helpful and very friendly. Like Samantha mentioned there's an application process and a home visit but Bobbi's volunteers did their best to accommodate our schedules and it was utterly painless. She will play games with you and have no qualms about telling you that you owe her money for your pet. Based on other reviews she's had luck with adopting healthy pets. But her luck has run short when the animal has turned out to have behaviour issues, she lacks to even notice or work with. Money money money is all she sees. It's just a business to her. My wife and I went to the Glendale location to meet a dog that we had seen on their website. We liked the dog and filled out an application. We were informed that we needed to be interviewed by Bobbi (Roberta Giordano). We phoned Bobbi and made an appointment to meet in Glendale. The first thing that Bobbi said to my wife was "Oh you have purple hair". My wife was wearing a hat. Next she started questioning us on our religious practices. She asked "What kind of Jews are you? Do you turn lights on and off on Saturdays?" She then questioned us about one of our references, an Orthodox Jew whose two dogs my wife and I often dog sit. "Does she turn lights on and off on Saturdays?" I answered "no way on the Sabbath." Bobbi's comment "Disgusting!' We kept our mouths shut because we really wanted the dog. Finally Bobbi told us that our veterinary reference would only confirm that we had been clients. The meeting ended with Bobbi saying that she needed to schedule a home visit. Understandably my wife and I had very negative vibes. We were never contacted for the visit, so I phoned Bobbi after a few days. She informed me that our application had been denied. I asked if it was the pink hair or because we were Jewish? She of course denied that, but could not give me a reason. Finally, we called our vet's office. Their call log indicated that Bobbi and the Strays had never contacted them. I have tried to honestly and accurately describe our experience with Bobbi and the Strays. Thanks for reading. read more

Staff here were really informative. They always have the pet's interest in mind. Their selections aren't as much as their Freeport location, but they have a good open area. My boyfriend and I were looking for a companion for his dog. We opened the door and the dogs went wild...I don't know what to think of that... our dog is extremely friendly; doesn't bark at all.. I didn't like that they didn't have an individual room to get to know the pets. We were looking for a cat that would be friendly with our dog. But the dogs were so loud that the cats didn't even want to see us, without our dog. read more

Shortly after getting our dog, Dexter, from Bobbi and the Strays in 2011 he developed severe fear aggression problems. He is very aggressive toward strangers and is noise sensitive. In addition to this, Bobbi and the Strays informed my husband and I that Dexter would grow to be about 20 lbs as an adult (we specifically stated we wanted a small dog), he is now 45lbs. I think that Bobbi and the Strays needs to find out more about the socialization the dog has had if the dog is being surrendered by a family. Also, they need to be more forthcoming about size. My husband and I are spending countless hours doing behavior modification with him, and countless amounts of money on medications and trainers. Would give 0 if I could. Louise was a pleasure to deal with that is the only positive about this place. Was told my application for the dog we wanted to adopt was selected. Went in the next day to see the dog with our whole family. Our daughter was petting, clapping and so excited for the dog. Yet, a day later I was told by someone who wasn't even there that she seemed "frightened" by the dog. I was told it was probably Bobbi watching from the camera. First of all I don't appreciate that at all and second of all my daughter was nervous when we walked in due to the fact that they made us stand there in the middle of the "shelter" ( and I use that term loosely here) with 20 other barking dogs. Then we had a virtual home visit which is a joke in and of itself. To be told someone would contact me in a few days that they suggest a second visit with the dog be set up by them. I said sure. I heard nothing and reached out to be then told the dog was given to another family. I was told it was because the dog showed "craziness" which was a different excuse this time than my daughter being "frightened." Oh and also she's a thief charging $700plus dollars for adoption. Go to a real rescue avoid at all costs. Worst place I feel bad for the dogs and cats that wind up here. I've had dogs my whole life and my last dog I had for 12 years and paid for multiple thousands of dollars in surgeries and even got my dog a doggie wheel chair when we could no longer walk. The process they put you through and idiotic questions they ask you makes you feel like they are trying to be little you when all you want to do is give a dog a good home. Only if you're "good friends" with her the process doesn't seem to apply. A man in my neighborhood had a dog who died from COPD because he was a smoker and guess who he went to and got a dog from with no problem ?! So do they really care? Nope! read more

Some people like pat b. should really put down their crack pipes just for a second before writing a review. Then they'd probably realize that the large dogs that Bobbi puts up on her web site are not kept at the Atlas Park location but at their dog shelter at JFK. Being a self-proclaimed connoisseur of airports, I'm surprised that pat b. is not even aware of the existence of the Vetport - located smack in the middle of JFK. Bobbi sublets a space in the Vetport and that is where she puts all the big dogs. Who'd expect to find big dogs at a strip mall anyway? read more
