I knew something was up when I arrived for happy hour and my colleagues greeted me with, "so this is a new aged bar." Flummoxed by that statement I quickly sat down and realized what they meant. You see there's a barcode on the table. You use said barcode to order. Once you scan it, you can see the menu, add your items to the cart, add your payment, and process. So I turned to my colleague and said, so this is a self service bar? I mean I'm taking orders, processing payments, and someone drops it off? To add to my self service conclusion, there's also a large dispenser of ice water with a stack of cups next to it if you want water. Although the dispenser was empty and therefore you were out of luck until someone refilled it. When I thought of going to happy hour I had something different in mind. I figured there would be a menu of interesting cocktails, decent service, and deals on drinks or food. Well that's not the case at this place. There are deals on rail drinks, no food though. The service- it's self service. I did the ordering and then waited 15 mins for the drink to come. Honestly by the time the drinks came, people at the table forgot who ordered what. The cocktail menu - dull and uninteresting. I would've been much happier if I'd gone home and made my own cocktails rather than coming to this place. There's only one thing this place has going for itself - the tartor tots. They were actually loaded, crunchy, and delicious. While they didn't compensate for the lack of service or dull cocktails, they were the highlight of my visit. read more

A fun new spot in Metro Center to grab beers, watch a sports game, or play some trivia and other bar activities. The bar itself is spacious and covers 2 floors; the day we went was relatively empty, but it fills up on other days. Standard selection of beers, and the food is pretty good (cheddar biscuits were great!). Would recommend checking out. read more

Even after reading the other reviews, I wanted to like this place. We like going to quirky places. The menu and price range were what we usually go for. We didn't mind ordering with the app. There's directions at every table, and the app worked fine. I ordered the only entree on the menu, Chicken Fried Steak. Being the only entree, I figured it would be really good. It wasn't. The meat was tough and the breading didn't stick to it. The cheddar biscuit was good, though. Are refills on soda free? We couldn't tell. Since there are no servers, no one offered. We sure didn't want to try and end up getting charged another $3 each. My wife enjoyed the bread pudding she had for dessert. My donut sundae was fine. Again, since donuts are what they do, I expected better. Finally, it was annoying that they kept changing the song on the radio. read more

Order drinks and food at the bar, food comes quick, and it's pretty tasty if you're a fan of Astro's fried chicken and donuts. If you want to enjoy your food with big screen TVs and add alcohol to the mix, then definitely worth stopping in! All tap beers were flat( in a place that has beer in its name) rude bartenders, terrible overpriced food. The breathing air was good though.

I was going to go to Au Bon Pain for breakfast across the street but it was closed. I saw a sign for 'fried chicken and doughnuts' across the street and ended up in here, so probably not the usual crowd since it was brunch time. I ordered the Breakfast Chicken Sandwich on a donut bun--it wasn't anything super fancy but it was filling and a good bite to eat. The donut bun was yummy, too, not overly sweet, although expectedly, it was greasy. The tater tots are awesome. I also found it to be decently priced. read more

Great little place with nice ambiance and the bartender Nicole is the bomb and Karin is second to none(except Nicole of course!).

After a long day of walking around DC we needed somewhere to grab a bite and a few drinks. It has a dive bar vibe. There's no real waitstaff, you order everything at the bar and then grab your food when your buzzer goes off. Trivia night was going on and that kept us occupied while waiting for the food. The bartender was great and got our drinks out quick and was friendly for the few interactions we had. If I'm back in DC I'd stop back. read more

We thought this place was going to be cute and chill but once we entered, she was demanding for our ID's and that's fine but then she asked what drinks we wanted and I told her and she said we don't have it or any cognac, then I asked for another drink.. again, don't have it. So I stuck with something simple. Then my sis asked for a tequila pineapple. She said she doesn't have pineapple. At this point, what do you have? Then she asked for Hennessy and she said she had no cognac again. Then my sis said she sees the cognac right there. And the bartender is "shocked" to find it there. And makes us the drink we requested originally. And gave the drink that I ordered after the fact she said she didn't have to someone else, FOR FREE... and she made the drink wrong too and when I mentioned the triple sec, she said "I know how to make it, don't worry about it" and it just tasted like straight liquor... I'm a bartender as well. I know how it's supposed to taste. and the entire time from the moment we went up to her, she was rude. But seemed very kind to the men. Terrible service. 0/10 in my opinion. Please stop charging 3.50 for tap seltzer water from the bar for the only person abstaining in a group of drinkers, or if you do, let the patron know ahead of time. Yes, you have a right to charge for CO2 (I guess, since flat water is free) but it's not a good look. People who are trying to abstain may be choosing soda water to invite less attention to the fact that they aren't drinking, which makes it easier to get through the night. read more

Came in when place was empty, ordered two appetizers and a couple doughnuts, and waited over an hour , when I talked to the server they said that it was in the works. after another 15 minutes they walk out with half of what we ordered rushed and not even right . Left very unsatisfied . read more

We went to Astro Beer Hall yesterday after seeing the cherry blossoms. The bar is in the basement and it is a sports bar with many TVs, pool tables and other games. We sat at the bar because at the time it was pretty empty but it filled up quickly with people wanting to watch the soccer match. The bartender was good even though she was very busy. The menu is limited to bar food, nothing fancy of foo foo here. The beer selection is good and they have a fully stocked bar for mixed drinks. Wine selection is limited but this is not a wine kind of place. We ordered chicken tenders (mild) a fully loaded tater tots and two piece white spicy chicken. The bartender gives you a vibrator to tell you when the food is done. The way they do it is the kitchen puts your order on a table and sets off the vibrator. You have to retrieve it along with utensils and a paper container for ketchup if you need it. Pretty basic. The serving size was generous for the tater tots and chicken tenders. The fried chicken was a decent size, no miniature pieces. I ate the wing piece first it was good. Juicy and hot. The spice is a powder put on after cooking. It had a decent kick and was flavorful. I dug into the breast and it was great. Again hot, very crispy skin, juicy and tasted great. I was skeptical about it but it really is excellent. The tater tots had plenty of cheese, sour cream, jalapeno and other ingredients. They were really good. My wife enjoyed the tenders. We enjoyed the experience and it did fill up fast for soccer. I feel this is a place you really don't expect to find in DC, it would fit right in if it were in Frederick. But this is a much needed place where people can have fun, get a good tasting meal and a few beers without having to rob a bank. Excellent, I hope they do well. read more

The ONLY thing good was the beer. Actually the tater tots were ok. Onion straws app was greasy. Fried chicken sandwich had no taste whatsoever and the spicy chicken sandwich, was a disgusting mess dripping with grease. McDonals would have been better. This place was great for a beer hall! We stumbled upon it looking for a place for dinner and ended up staying for hours having drinks, food, and playing the arcade games. The Mac and Cheese bites may have been the best I've ever had. Definitely recommend as fun, casual spot for a pint and snacks. read more

For a space bar, the place was really lackluster in theme. I'm in the space industry, and my basement is far cooler in decor than this place. There's a painting of an astronaut, some posters, and some lava lamps, but that's really about it. Rocket Bar remains the superiorly decorated space bar in DC. The first floor has a bunch of booths and basement has a large open space with a few arcade games, but not a large number. The happy hour is ok; $2 off beer and well drinks 4-7, and I'll give them credit that they did a good job serving everyone on opening day, but I'm failing to see where this place is going to differentiate itself from all other bars other than the lack of cheaper and larger locations in this area. I'd never had astro fried chicken or doughnuts prior to the opening of the beer hall. I'm not huge on either fried chicken or doughnuts, but appreciate them on occasion-- got the fried chicken sandwich as their special, which was really lackluster with no flavor, almost what I'd expect from Wendy's (and certainly not as good as the Shake Shack sandwich; have not yet had the Popeye's to compare). Also got the pumpkin spice donut; not a huge pumpkin spice person (they were out of almost all flavors at 5pm), but thought I'd try it-- even removing the flavor from the equation, the texture of the donut was also pretty mediocre. They're supposed to have a breakfast menu and open for breakfast in the future, but they're not open that early yet. read more

Lots of screens available for game multi-tasking times of the year (NFL Sunday, NCAA tournament, basketball/hockey playoffs, etc...) and the staff will gladly shift around screens even though they do pre-designate screens for certain games (instead of being downright rude about it like Capitol City brewery). Food is pretty straightforward...much of it is from Astro Doughnut next door, so all the chicken items are available from there, though they add a few items of their own, like the fantastic chicken fried steak and sausage gravy. The standout for me was the pimento dip...a generous cup of it that was really filling. Honestly, unless you're there to watch sports, grab your chicken and donuts from the counter next door. They are the best donuts in the city, especially when you get them as the bun for your chicken sandwich. They will run out, so get there by lunch if you can! read more

Bartender made zero effort for small talk, didn't ask how our food was, and didn't offer us another round- simply took our order and dropped the check. Food was good but when we got the unitemized check, he took it upon himself to click 20% tip then said "all you have to do is sign". I've been coming to this spot since it was Laughing Man. In the last 2 years, it's undergone just as many new iterations. Now, as Astro Beer Hall... total MEH. The staff is nice/fine. The decor is simple and cool. Their QR code ordering is a great, modern way to order... But Astro should stick to their expertise...donuts! I went in for a few bar bites this week and was sooo disappointed. The menu is awfully limited and overpriced. I ordered their version of what I expected to be an onion "awesome blossom" but what I got was what could've been a tub of French's Fried Onions that your aunt puts on top of the green bean casserole at Thanksgiving. Where were the onions? It was all batter, so thin that you couldn't even pick it up without breaking! Also, their chips with salsa+guac were terrible. I've had better salsa poured from a jar from the dollar store and the guacamole was THE WORST. So bland and blended with who knows what, but it was pretty terrible. None of that was made in-house. NONE of what I ordered, I'm sure. I really wanted to like Astro's attempt at a beer hall because I love their donuts, but clearly this is not their forte. Overpriced, store-bought, bar food. Blahhhh. Nice idea but they need to get their act together. It was not at all clear that there are no servers at the tables. You either have to order at the bar/counter, or scan a QR code and download an app to order online. The QR code is just pasted to the table and there's no sign saying it's 100 percent self serve. I guess you are supposed to guess. After we waited 20 minutes, a busboy came by and told us the rules. The app didn't work. After struggling with the app for 15 more minutes, I went to the bar, where the cashier told me that they were having trouble with the app. He apologized, but honestly. The assistant manager did later come and apologize, but we would have appreciated a free round, given that we ordered both drinks and food and were pretty put out. This is not a great concept for a bar and we went without a second round rather than deal with the worthless app or the line at the bar a second time.
