We got: - dolmades mezes starter: it was warm and had beef in it which was unexpected -- I'm almost certain we had a different version of these before that did not have meat and were served cold, I have never really loved these lol but my partner has really enjoyed the cold version before because he found it really refreshing. The warm one was interesting, still enjoyable to him but not as much as before - beef souvlaki plate with fries instead of salad: I loved this! I asked for no lettuce, and the server said I could switch out the salad for fries instead. The beef was so tender and flavored well, super savory, and I absolutely LOVE the olive dip that comes with this dish. The fries were okay! I enjoyed dipping them into the olive dip. - swordfish souvlaki wrap no lettuce with fruit: option to get fries instead, but we got fruit. My mom liked it! I tried some of the swordfish and it had a nice light flavor, quite tender and very nice. I've also gotten the grilled branzini before, which is a whole entire fish. Warning that you may need to use your hands to eat this directly lol I really enjoyed this dish too! When we arrived, they mentioned we could sit anywhere we wanted. There was both indoor and outdoor seating. We sat outdoors so it was a tad warm but they provide shade. There is a tent as well with a plastic surrounding but as for any restaurant with these plastic surroundings, I always find the plastic smell so strong and offputting, so we sat at the tables instead where they have umbrellas providing a lot of shade. We sat next to a bougainvillea bush which also provides us shade and some entertainment as little birds hopped back and forth inside the bush and then out of it to nearby tables, looking for food. So cute! Parking can be found in the lot behind the restaurant, but the entrance is still found around the other side of the building, on the side of the outdoor seating. You can also park on the side of the street in front of the restaurant, but there's less shade. We arrived at a 3pm on a Friday with almost no one else there, so once our whole party was present we got service immediately. The food takes some time to cook but as mentioned, it's delicious. This is my favorite Greek place in Santa Clara. I always end up ordering the branzino and it never misses. It comes with garlic fries and a Greek salad, plus this garlic sauce that honestly ties everything together in the best way. The fish is super fresh every time, flaky, and cooked perfectly with that slightly crisp outside and soft inside. The flavors are really balanced and clean. I wanted a side salad, but they said I couldn't order one since I didn't order a meal, so I had a couple of bites of my husbands side salad, yes they do offer them, just not for everyone. A slight deduction for service, the wait staff was not very friendly, the restaurant was a bit on the cold side, especially for this time of year, and I like it when restaurants think about the environment. This restaurant uses paper on the table which means cutting down trees, and they use disposable plastic cups for their sauces. Overall, the experience doesn't make me want to come back. read more

This review is for take away, where we ordered kebabs and grilled veggies and rice. My friend ordered online and I went to pick up. Good thing she sent me the online receipt, so I can show them. Always double check before you pickup. Beef kebabs were good, the grilled veggies were my favorite. They were done with just the right amount of char, still firm and not overly cooked. The basmati rice was fluffy and light, slightly seasoned. The only feedback I have to improve service would be that they gave me the aluminum trays, just like that, and I had to carry hot trays to the car. Perhaps a sturdy bag or cardboard box carrier would be better, since the trays were quite hot to handle. read more

Writing an updated review because idk what I was thinking with giving Athena Grill less than 5 stars back then. This place has always been a solid and consistent place when it comes to the food and service. Their entrees taste amazing with juicy grilled meats with the perfect char for that added crunch texture. They all come with a nice serving of Greek salad, rice, and vegetables. They allow you to swap the rice and vegetables with fries or double a serving without charge. Their purple sauce is hands down the best sauce paired with the garlic fries. The meats alone are flavorful, using the sauce is next level. Their fries never disappoint. Lunch time is seating yourself while dinner time they seat you. Their service is on point with the same servers I've known since first dining here years ago. They are very friendly and check in. We have had many celebrations here including birthdays and we always share our slices of cake with them. I usually go for the chicken, sometimes I'll do the duo swapping the lamb for the beef. Salmon is tender and a big serving. Their moussaka is the only moussaka I've tried and it's a good choice outside of the grill. Branzino is beautiful and also their lamb shank. It doesn't have the gamey after taste. Very homey vibes like a family establishment. Located in an industrial area around the tech jobs so lunch time it gets crowded. There was a good mix of great dishes, okay dishes, and not-so-good dishes here, but I think the place was overall solid. First for what I'd definitely recommend: lamb riblets (soft, well-seasoned, and fall off the bone with amazing garlic sauce) & gyro plate (such well seasoned meat with delicious sauce and tomato to pair). The chicken souvlaki wrap was pretty good too, but not the best chicken souvlaki I've tried. I'd definitely skip on the steak pita wrap, beef souvlaki plate, and the lamb chops as the meat in these were pretty tough to chew. Everything else we got was not mind blowingingly good nor terrible. Service was really nice and attentive. We were late to our reservation but still treated nicely. They let us know when their kitchen closes but didn't rush us at all. They have privacy from the street with the green wall which also makes the temps feel cooler than the other side. Tasty food! We went for lunch and reserved a table just in case. We went at 11:30, and it was pretty empty, but an hour later or so, it was so crowded!!!! Almost every table was taken. We sat outside underneath a covered area which was nice for a summer day. We ordered a 3 dip sampler - hummus, eggplant and tzatziki. It came with bread and pita. The eggplant was our favorite. We split the Greek salad and falafel wrap. My friend doesn't like cucumbers, so they put them on the sides for us! On the salad, we added some gyro. We ordered two gyros, one with fruit and the other with fries. Cook came out to deliver, both with fruit. When I explained one should have fries, he snatched the plate from my hand! Confused, I said "oh just leave the gyro while it's hot, and take the fruit back" (which was on a separate tiny dish). I reached for the plate again, and he pulled away! He insisted he needed that same plate for the fries. My guess is he either thought I was trying to get free fruit, or he didn't want to dirty another plate. Weirdest restaurant experience in a very long time. Maybe more than one star if good things came to those who wait (for an extra plate). Fries: 3/5 Both plates came with fries and this was the least favorite item of them. While I liked the garlic flavoring, they needed more salt and were not as crispy as I would have liked. The chicken wasn't very seasoned and at the end all I had left was cottage cheese. For the price you'd expect it to be put together better.
