The food is absolutely delicious. Our favorite is the Lamb Shank--it's truly outstanding. The meat is incredibly tender, and the orzo pilaf underneath is perfectly balanced and full of flavor. What really makes this place special, though, is the people. From the hostess at the entrance to especially Mous and Blue, everyone is amazing at what they do. Not only did I have the opportunity to dine here, but I also had a great experience booking the small private dining room for a work event. Derya was so efficient in helping me not only book, but also was on site to make sure we went through the run of show to confirm the dinner would go off without a hitch. Hospitality truly shines bright here, as we originally booked for 20 people and ended up with 30...oops! Most establishments would have made a fuss, but she handled it with finesse and said, "No problem!" While that was going on, I was having dinner on the side with a good friend. Moose extended the hospitality by being our server. Great recommendations, great story teller, and even better service. How lucky were we to be able to dine outside on such a gorgeous night in Palo Alto? One of my favorite parts of the parklet is that they have adjustable windows, so you don't feel confined to the space. The fish and lamb shank were the winners in my book for food. As a proud Greek, I was so excited to try this place. I've been going to Evvia for years and so I wanted a change from our usual greek spot. So when u had family visiting, I didn't hesitate to book here to celebrate our special occasion. Well, after my experience I can say it was nothing special. Service was ok. Food is WAY overpriced. They charge for a bottle of water (!!!) Not even sparking water but REGULAR water. Can you believe it??? And no they never mentioned that we will pay extra for water. Last time I checked water was free!!! That was absolutely ridiculous. The bill ended up being super pricy $$$. I wouldn't say it's worth it for the price. A lot of the dishes were not filling enough so we had to get more which cost us even more $$$ I also did not feel like it was a Greek restaurant. The servers didn't know Greek, there was no Greek music, we were not welcomed into the room at all by a hostess... it was really disappointing. I've been to Greece many times and tavernas are quaint little restaurants where it is usually filled with music, warm service and delicious food, although the food was pretty good, for the price we pay I'd say it really wasn't worth it. This is a decent place for casual meet ups. Went here on a Saturday for brunch with my girlfriends . Let's start with service . Our waiter came and explained to us all the dishes which was nice . We ordered crispy calamari, grilled halloumi cheese , steamed Horta greens , omelette , orange juice and grilled octopus salad. Grilled halloumi cheese was really delicious . Omelette was also really good . Rest of the dishes were pretty standard in taste , nothing mind blowing so I felt place is a little over priced . We were not in mood for having dessert so we skipped it . Parking can be little difficult if you try to find one right in front of the restaurant however there were planting parking just 2 blocks away . A friend recommended this place to us, and it is definitely worth trying! We ordered the lamb chops, salmon, and octopus. I don't like lamb, but my partner devoured the lamb chops, so I'm assuming they are pretty good. I loved the octopus - it's probably the best I've had in the bay! The pairing with hummus and fresh herbs was perfection. The salmon was a bit on the small side but they gave a generous portion of vegetables. Relative to the other dishes, this one was pretty forgettable for me. We came here on a Friday night with a reservation at around 5:30 and it was pretty light, though it quickly filled up. The decor is very charming and the vibe was cozy. This place is a bit on the smaller side but there's also plenty of outdoor seating The staff was attentive and personable. We came here to celebrate a birthday just to try a different Greek cuisine in the area. The vibe is so much better than the rest and it was like being in a small village in the countryside. It's very cozy and warm with a bit of a rustic feel. All of the food that we had was delicious and tasty. Their portion was very good in comparison with the other restaurants in the area. The staff were friendly and attentive. The only thing was when we arrived there was nobody to greet us although we had a reservation. They seemed to be scrambling around next door with an event going on. They also need to have a friendlier concierge greeting the incoming guests. Otherwise our visit was very eventful. I can not say enough about Taverna! From the moment I walked in, the hospitality was top tier. Everyone was so kind, friendly, and welcoming. I haven't come across too many Greek spots on the west coast so Taverna was an absolute treat! The space itself is beautiful, big tables, comfortable seating, doesn't feel like you're on top of the table next to you. Every dish was thoughtfully explained to my friends who aren't Greek and you could taste the love put into everything we tried. Now to the food: Tzatziki - perfect, thick, tangy, really delicious and the pita was outstanding, tastes homemade like your yiayia made it. Avgolemono - I love this soup, there's zest yet comfort, I never pass up a bowl of Avgolemono and this was is a definite order! Keftedakia - so so so so good! Juicy, flavorful, I honestly could've had so many more of these. Horiatiki - I'm partial to my own, yet this was so much better than mine I have to say! Always a must-order. Braised Lamb - it was a special, it's been a few days and I'm still thinking about it. The lamb fell right off the bone, the orzo had nutmeg and cinnamon I loved it what a treat! Next time I'd love to get some spanakopitakia, I haven't had any since my yiayia passed away and I miss hers! Everyone was so lovely and they brought us a pre-dinner treat from the chef which was like a piperakia tiganita and then an amazing shot of mastiha with lime and fresh pepper (insanely delicious)! The host was a bit icy upon our arrival/first impression, but it seemed she was perhaps managing numerous tables/an event. The ambiance -- 5 stars. Taverna is *beautiful.* The paintings adorning the restaurant's exterior disguise its entryways, giving it a bit of a speakeasy feel. Once inside, the lighting and artwork create cozy yet upscale feel as you dine. The food -- 4 stars. I had the moussaka, which arrived more lukewarm than hot despite it being an oven baked dish. We had the fava/tzatziki/eggplant platter with bread, and it was good but nothing spectacular (perhaps it could've benefitted from more seasoning?). The service -- 5 stars. I hadn't had moussaka in a long time and was really craving it, so we came to Taverna. The outdoor ambiance was beautiful, I honestly felt like I was in Greece . Our server, Vicente, was very attentive and recommended we try the tzatziki as an appetizer. It was creamy and refreshing, made with yogurt, but at times it felt like cream cheese, just not as salty. I loved it, and the pita bread was delicious too. For our main dishes, we had the lamb chops, which were super tender and juicy, so good! We also shared the moussaka, and it was spectacular. We went there for the Mother's Day brunch. While we fully expected that we wouldn't get the best benefit for cost (considering it was the Mother's Day and they were doing a set prix fix menu), it went below the expectations. First, when we arrived a bit before the reservation time, even though my reservation clearly shows outdoor table, they tried to seat us next to the door saying that my reservation showed up as inside in their system and they could only give us that crappy table. When we complained, they immediately moved us to a better outdoor table. Then, it took ~15 minutes for the waiter to take our orders. Then it took another ~15 minutes to get the amuse bouche, each time only after we complained. Food was sub par. Their "supposedly" famous lamb chops were full of fat and not much meat. And we could see that the food was not directly from the kitchen as they were all lukewarm when they came out. Then they had the "automatic" 20% service charge on top of it. No wonder they didn't have to work hard. They already earned their tips. All in all, it was a disappointing experience in every aspects. Over multiple visits, I've been lucky enough to try just about everything on the menu. My thoughts: Dolmathakia: Grape leaves stuffed with rice, pine nuts, and fresh herbs. These pack plenty of flavor, especially compared to entry level places. Greek meatballs: Seared in a cast iron and served with Greek yogurt & red onion. Comes with three but we usually ask for four. A crowd favorite. Spanish octopus: hit or miss. It's been excellent and only ok. Salmon: Served several ways over the years. Most recently sauced with a chickpea ratatouille. Solid. Moussaka: If you've never had this dish, think mashed potatoes stuffed with ground beef (and lamb) and eggplant bakes in a casserole. Comfort food done right the Greek way. Lamp chops: VERY tasty but I need three to feel full and that's quite pricey. The Greek fries are surprisingly excellent; ask for the spicy sauce on the side. A wide variety of premier wine at Palo Alto prices. Service is almost always impeccable. It's a cozy environment in all of the rooms; on a nice night, you can eat outside. Some of the tables are a little cramped and multiple dining companions have complained the chairs are uncomfortable. I really like Taverna and will keep coming back. We just ordered small plates, brunch, and sides. So I can't speak to any of the main dishes. Having said that, below is what I can speak to on the restaurant. Dip - We ordered the tzatziki which came with delicious grilled pita. The dip was really creamy and the pita had sea salt which brought out the grilled flavor. French toast - I hadn't seen anyone mention the French toast. However, it deserves a mention because it was delicious! So light and fluffy with a cinnamon whipped sort of topping. So good! Fries - The fries were also really good. They came with ketchup and an interesting white sauce that tasted of basil, parmesan, and a tiny kick of spice. Whenever I go to a restaurant, I tend to like items that other people don't focus on...so just know I evaluate restaurants on pita and fries. LOL. But that's what makes me happy. As I visited Palo Alto on a warm sunny Monday, I came across this cute greek restaurant. We started with a few appetizers like the Spanakopita, Tzatziki, and Spicy Feta Spread. All 3 were great and served fresh. We split all of this among 3 people and had the right amount. Then we got the veggie gyros which was pretty heavy and came with fries. The greek salad was lovely and the cheese on top was so delicious. We also got the zucchini fritters which were good but also on the heavier side after eating so many other dishes. Parking is usually not a problem as there happen to be ample spots that can be picked from around the restaurant. The atmosphere is great, and my guest had been many times, but tonight was an off night. The waiter confused the order so the salmon needed to be prepared again due to adding a sauce instead of having it on the side, and the dressing on the salad that came with the chicken skewers overwhelmed the taste of the lettuce. The dressing dripped off each leaf and left a soup at the bottom of the bowl. The dish was lovely grilled chicken and salad dressing. My comment of too much sauce to the waiter elicited the response that "Greeks love sauce and that's how they cook" had me thinking that this particular Greek chef loves sauces. I'm surprised no other reviews mentioned this - their chairs are TERRIBLE! The uncomfortableness was looming over me the whole time and I couldn't relax to enjoy the experience. I probably wouldn't have anyways as it's so loud in the dining room, and they left the door open on a chilly night and we sat right at the door (where it makes more sense to be a check-in area instead of an awkward table for two). The food was not memorable either. The best thing we had was the crispy halloumi with honey. For entrees we ordered the roasted young chicken and moussaka. The chicken meat was fine but the sauce tasted like nothing but salt, and the side vegetables were way too bland and casually positioned when you consider the price point. The moussaka was tasteless; I make better ones at home. I would have ordered at least one more appetizer and dessert, but alas, the chairs made me not want to sit there even one minute longer. read more

I was able to join some colleagues for a work/ dinner event. We were in a room between the main restaurant and the back lounge part. The Whole style of restaurant was so cute. Very aesthetically pleasing. We were served family style and before we even sat down we had the amazing staff serve us drinks and wine. The table was already set with cutlery and appetizers. So many beautiful little plates. All of the little plates were so delicious and fresh. As we continued through our presentation, the very polite staff never missed as they continued to ensure our drinks never reached the end of the glass. I was genuinely impressed by their attentiveness from the very beginning our time there to the very end. Mustafa, specifically was such a vibe and yet was very professional & genuinely personable and seemed to lead his crew with ease. We then had our appetizers, dinner and finally dessert with the wait staff clearing our areas between each new set with perfect timing and efficiency. The quality of the food was top notch & well prepared. There wasn't anything that came out that I didn't like. So impressed with the menu and the quality and friendly staff. From the moment you walk in, it feels like you've been dropped into a small Greek village where food, hospitality, and tradition actually matter. My wife and I come here for special date nights, and we almost always order the same way. We start with the Pikilia Dips Platter and Gavros Marinatos, then move on to the Horiatiki Salata and Pantzaria. For our main, we share the Moussaka and the Arnaki (three amazing lamb chops), which are absolutely incredible every single time. And if I'm in the mood for a little show, I always add the Saganaki. You can't go wrong with Saganaki. We love Greek food, and truly authentic options in the Bay Area are limited. Of all of them, Taverna is the most authentic; great food, great drinks, and a warm, welcoming atmosphere. The servers are friendly, knowledgeable, and clearly passionate about what they serve. Came here once with a friend and liked it, so I decided to come back. I wish I hadn't. First, what on the prior visit seemed like a nice intimate place revealed that this place is huge with several rooms. We were seated in a big one, near a door that the servers needed to use to go in and out. Second, the food didn't cut it. The dolmas were good, the spanakopita very good, and the village salad great. From there it went straight downhill. The pork gyro was greasy and disgusting, loaded with twice-cooked french fries and the sauce was not good. The lamb chops were meh, cooked appropriately, but nothing special and the sauce on the plate with the twice-cooked potato wedges removed from the dish and didn't add to it. Third, while our server was great, our overall service experience was a total failure. Mid-way through our meal someone who I suppose was a regular customer came in and was treated like royalty which made him happy but ended up negatively impacting our meal. He, a big guy, sat directly behind me and well away from the table destroying the aisle so the rest of the night I was bumped into endlessly by the servers. (God forbid they bump into the king.) Plus, the staff created the problem by saying, "[you're the king so] sit anywhere you want" and didn't redirect him when he decided to sit directly behind another big guy. Worse yet, the staff/managers were so busy fawning over him loudly and endlessly that I had three people right on my back for 10 (it felt like 20) minutes speaking loudly standing literally inches behind me. Joking and fawning. It's bad enough when a noisy client spoils the environment. It's inexcusable when the staff does. So good job, guys, I hope you made the king happy but you sealed the deal on me never returning to your place. The food was bad enough that I probably wasn't coming back anyway. I've been wanting to try this restaurant as I used to work within walking distance of this place but it is pricey so I wanted to wait for an occasion. I took my Dad and Mom here for a birthday lunch and it was good. Service was great and our Greek waiter was so funny. We ordered the octopus and calamari (couldn't choose). Both were good but the octopus still doesn't beat the one I had in Astoria (hard to beat, admittedly). The chicken gyro was good and massive-- I could only finish half and brought the rest home. My Mom had the Greek burger and my Dad had the pork gyro. Very pretty on the inside. I would come here again but for another occasion. Came on Thursday night with reservation, however they only had outside table (which was okay as heater kept us warm). Even tho it was on weekday, the restaurant was p busy and service was slow. We had to ask to get a waiter assigned & even after that, our wine wasn't served till after they gave us food (food alters the taste of wine..) The best dish here is prob octopus. The portion is bigger than other restaurants I tried, and it was cooked right amount and seasoning was good (a bit salty on some part). Tzatziki is very thick and creamy and served with generous amount of pita. Greek salad was also good but more like appetizer than salad. However the fish was disappointing especially its texture. It was mushy and wasn't flaky at all. Fish itself is bland so you need to pour the sauce which is creamy lemon taste. Overall 3 stars, but if the service wasn't as slow and more attentive, I would haven given 4 stars. read more

We have dined at Taverna a few times for lunch. I enjoyed the meal every time, and look forward to returning in the future! They created a lovely atmosphere, both outside and inside the restaurant. The outdoor space is kept warm, even on a rainy day. It is nicely decorated and very pleasant. I found the waiters to be polite and attentive. For food, I recommend the Horiatiki salata, halloumi, ora king salmon, and lamb chops. The fresh olive bread is also delicious. Overall, a very nice Greek restaurant and a cute date spot! read more

Love this place! The wine selection is quite pricey, but the staff is knowledgeable about pairing. The painkiller cocktails are good but strong. Highly recommend the meatballs, flaming cheese, and beet salad as appetizers. The branzino for 2 is fabulous. All the desserts are very good too! Nice ambiance inside. The outdoor street seating is not my favorite. But the service is always good and we like coming here. read more

Ambiance is cozy. A little dated and packed. This place has been here for a while and serves standard Greek food. Is it anything I'd crave? No. Some items are strange like the squash and mushroom and feta ravioli. read more
