Very disappointed after reading all of the great reviews. I had purchased a groupon because I needed some small things fixed around my condo. When I first called and talked to a gentleman, he took down my phone number in a very crass manner and said someone will get back to me. No one ever did. A few weeks later I e-mailed the contact person explaining the situation. She did not apologize for not getting back to me but simply said that she forwarded my contact info to the tech and he should be contacting me that day. Still no messages. The next day when I expressed my disappointment via e-mail, her response was not how we can remedy the situation, but "We left two messages for you and never heard back. I think something is wrong with this situation where we try to contact you but you are saying we are not" I did not want someone in my house who is rude and unreliable. That time, I had several jobs including putting together a night stand and doing some work in my kitchen. Jim arrived early, worked steady and answered all of my questions. He even answered my daughter's questions. Today, I needed Jim's assistance with two shower heads, putting together a bookcase, and mounting it to the wall, along with fixing some items in the bathroom and the washroom. Jim, once again, came early and told me that if he was done in less time than the two hours allotted for my projects, that he would not charge me for additional time. His speed is literally unreal - I'm not even sure how it's possible to build and fix things as quickly as he does. Jim was recommended to us through our real estate agent. We needed a wall built in our new home and doors hung for the wall. Jim was very prompt about coming over and giving us a quote for the work. He showed up on time and got to work. He was very good about communicating with us about details of the wall installation. Jim was good with the 'big picture' items; however, he could have spent more time on the finishing details. For instance, the new wall is straight and the door is balanced such that the doors swing properly. However, the joint between the new wall and old wall was visible after the plaster was put on. There were other areas where you could see streaks from the trowel marks of the plaster. And the dry wall opening for the light switch was too large for a standard switch cover. My husband emailed Jim back to fix these things a few days after Jim had finished the job. To his credit, Jim came back the day after he got my husband's email and finished it during lunchtime. He replastered the areas my husband pointed out. It turned out largely okay except the wall now has large areas of plaster. However, his solution for the large light switch opening was to get a bigger light switch cover - not cool! Overall, he appears to be a good fix-it guy, but not detailed finish work. read more

I met Jim of Athena thru a Living Social special and am very very happy. I had a list of items, plus wish list items, and we got thru the whole list. I appreciated that in talking and emailing about some of the items on our list he actually forwarded me links to products at Home Depot and on Amazon. We were thinking of having him replace ceiling fans and he suggested just changing out the remote to save money.... he was very good at trying to figure out the fastest and most economical way to fix things. He arrived as scheduled, right at 9 a.m. He's tall and obviously strong and started in our hot attic, looking at our attic fan, which stopped working 7 years ago. What I liked is that he didn't just jump to replace it. Before even opening the box, he first checked to make sure the switch was working; then went and investigated to see if it just needed oil or something... turned out the blades were completely immovable and it did need replacement. While most of the reviews of the product said it would take about 3 hours for installation - he finished within 40, including first checking the switch and such. He had a well-stocked toolbox and truck. We had him fix a leak in our bathroom sink; he was able to slow it for now... turns out it will need to be replaced as the "stem" is hopelessly stuck on the faucet. However, he was able to restore some of the water pressure by replacing some 13 yr old hose thing that had a lot of built up crud inside -- happened to have it on his truck and for only $5. Some vertical blinds we have never opened properly after being re-installed after some construction 13 years ago. We were ready to have him take them down and re-position them. He pulled the chain really hard and re-positioned them immediately without even needing a screwdriver, saving a lot of time and effort!! Again, he's tall so can easily reach an 8' ceiling without a ladder. We had him take down the heater-vent-fan unit as it was making a funny noise. Again, we were thinking we might need to replace it. However, once the cover was removed he saw it was just full of a LOT of dust and stuff. I handed him the vacuum and he vacuumed it out really nicely, put the lid back on, and now it runs well again! Some items I just needed advice on... such as how to prep for painting outside and figuring out how to treat some bad wood on the eaves... he was great. I could go on and on but will stop. Will definitely recommend and have back to put a stove vent in and move an outdoor spigot! read more

I am the home owner for the past 30+ years. I have many plumbers came through my house to fix something. I have to say that Jim is the best one I have met so far. He is not only skillful, efficient but also charges very reasonably. We had 3 sinks not working, 2 toilets leaking and two shower heads not working. Jim came in and got all of them fixed within 2 hours including the time he had to run to Home Depot to get parts. Unfortunately the parts he got from Home Depot did not fit our faucet since our brand is out of stock. But, he identified our faucet brand is Moen. The brand can't be found any where on the faucet itself, so we are thankful that Jim identified it. Moen company has the guarantee parts for the life. Jim told us the Moen's website and told us what's the parts name and to get a replacement for free. He further showed my husband how to replace them when the free parts arrive. After I called Moen, they are sending us the free parts on 3/24. I also had to mention that one of our toilets has a counter top covering the toilet closet leaving only 5 inches gap to reach the toilet closet under the sink. Jim fixed it in less than 10 minutes! His skill and knowledge is unbelievable. I will not go to other plumbers from this point on. Another thing worth to mention is that on his way out, my husband asked him to fix one of the towel racks which keeps on coming off. He fixed it without a second word. Jim is a very knowledgeable handyman. He knows his stuff and takes pride about his work. He gave good recommendations about what material to pick and explain how to have things done correctly. He is very responsive to email or text. it's much easier to reach him through email or text than call as he doesn't answer the phone when he is working for other clients - totally respect that. Another tip is you may want to schedule more time with him if your project is bigger with some uncertainties. He may not be able to extend his hours the same day as he often has back to back appointments. If the time is running short, your project may not be able to be completed till the next appointment which will be about 1-2 weeks away. read more

I highly recommend Jim for handyman work around the house, with a caveat. Pros: Super fast, nice guy, fair pricing, conservative estimates (no lowballing) Cons: attention to detail leaves a bit to be desired The other reviewers are correct; his speed is amazing. Even though he charges by hour, he works super fast so you never have to worry about being overcharged. This is also the disadvantage to hiring Jim; he often works so fast that he overlooks details. For example, we had him tear down our trellis/awning(?) attached to our house. When patching the holes in the stucco he missed a few that I had to go back and fill in later. Also, the patches I made look much better than the ones he did. On the plus side, he did tear down the structure amazingly quick in less time than he estimated. Jim is also a very good businessman, so I would take what he says with a grain of salt. He has a lot of confidence in his range of skills, but for anything technical I would ask a few extra questions to make sure he knows what he's doing. Even though attention to detail is lacking I still think Jim deserves 4 stars because I still think he is the best for jobs that can be done quickly. I wouldn't recommend Jim for jobs where aesthetics are extremely important or that require a high level of technical skill (e.g. electrical work). read more

Didn't seem very interested in my job. The first part of the job, which was to replace some rotted wood was OK, nothing special. The pieces weren't cut well, so there are gaps between the wood and they are a little loose. The second part of the job was much worse. We were left with a flooded garage because pipes were not properly connected. Since it was nighttime, I had to repair the mess myself in the dark. If you use them, search one of the local voucher websites. They often have specials listed. However, I would still stay away from them even at better prices. read more

I called Jim to install a ceiling mount indoor swing. On the phone, he estimated 1 Hour to install it. It was an imported swing from other country, he figured ceiling support included in the box isn't suitable to the situation here; So, he had to improvise and support the ceiling, himself; He went and purchased the hardware from HomeDepo. It took a total of two hours and the work wasn't finished. He had another prior scheduled appointment, so had to leave. To me he looked under pressure. Hence, I told him to leave and return to us after taking care of the other business. He was paid for two hours. And honestly, I didn't think he would come back. But he came back that afternoon and brought three different washers with him, which would lock the ceiling support in place. All these he himself bought in Home Depot ( he had to visit the store again for some other job). That made me realize, he never forget about us and the job. I was pleasantly surprised. After he came back, he took his time, nicely finished the job. He even spent some time with us like a good friend. He didn't charge us any more. I think, he is a man of character. Jimbo is really exceptional and fast - being tall too helps with those up high repairs. I've had him over for dishwasher install (that the company I bought it from refused to install on fairly commonplace and within code plumbing), door hardware install, ceiling light installation, garbage disposal install, etc. When Jimbo comes over, you had better have a list ready for him, because he gets things done SO quickly, he'll have plenty of time to get some other maintenance items done for you as well. I cannot state how happy we are with the work Jim did. We found him thru LivingSocial and he will be our go to guy from now on. He has undoubtedly saved us an enormous amt of $$$ and did it all with an excellent attitude and good skills. We had a varied list of probably 15 things that needed to be done in our 35 yr old home and he accomplished them all within 5 hrs. They included converting our wood fireplace to gas, installed a lamp in front of the house (which included needing to do the wiring for it), hanging mirrors, fixing pblms with the deck, caulking holes in the gutter, fixing a whole house fan than wasn't working, hanging drape rods at ceiling hgt (he is 6'5 and very strong), installing a retractable screen door, etc, I wanted knobs put on all my cabinets and when he saw them, he explained why they would not work (thus saving me the cost of both the knobs and his labor). We are so pleased with his work that we have scheduled him to come back to fix a plumbing problem, put glass (which he measured and ordered on his own) in our kitchen cabinets, put in a skylight, level out our dining room/living room floors which are now one step apart and install yet another set of retractable screen doors. I cannot imagine anyone not being pleased with his work - I very much appreciate his integrity and competence - u can see by the variety of items he accomplished, that he has a wide range of skills which make him the perfect person to call for help!! read more

Jim is a no-nonsense, get the job done right, and done quickly handyman/contractor. His rate is good, but with how quickly he works, the cost for the job is very reasonable. So my advice: lump several things together for him to do before he comes out to take advantage of that. This was the 3rd time we utilized his services - for light electrical: attaching motion sensors to standard outdoor lights, and then replacing the existing lights, and testing the motion sensors. He was done in about 40 minutes, so I had him also replace a GFI wall outlet that had been giving us trouble. There was a bit of "drilling shrapnel" left at the work areas. Personally, I'm fine with that. I'm paying Jim to do the electrical (or plumbing, or fence work, carpentry, etc), and for his advice - not for minor clean-up that I can do. He's honest, and will tell you if he's not the right guy for something. But if it's in his wheel-house, he does great work, and he does it quickly and for a very good total price.
