Walking around Park slope and wanted to try this little Mediterranean spot. Inside and outside seating-we sat inside and enjoyed the decor but it was pretty warm. Recommend outside on a hot day 94 degrees. Only one lone ranger was handling all the tables and I think he could have used some help as there were long waits. We ordered a chicken eggplant sandwich which was very tasty but dry needed some type of sauce. I had the lamb kabob and they were good I didnt care much for the seasoning which was on the meat vegetables and the pilaf. We also had a lamb schwerma plate that was very dry and not good. It also needed some type of pita to make it more palatable. The baba/eggplant appetizer was very good as well the pita. I do recommend not leaving the eggplant seeds as they are hard and unpleasant. Maybe a good place to enjoy an outside table wine appetizer but skip otherwise. read more

On a cold/wintery day, we met up with friends here and had a fun lunch. The waiter was friendly and because of the snow, we were treated to extra special service! We had a bunch of different things, including a falafel platter, a gyro platter, Greek fries, soup, zucchini chips. Miguel and Stavros were warm and welcoming! They offered us suggestions and were both kind, polite and professional The restaurant is cozy and classy! I enjoyed the Greek Salad with the grilled tuna and ws very happy! I also tried the grape leaves with a sweet sauce and it was delightful. My friend had the salmon over salad and was also pleased. I've been to Athena Mediterranean Cuisine twice now and it's exceeded my expectations both times! They serve such delicious Greek food. I've had the spread sampler (Kyra Pikilia), salad, and lemon potatoes. The sour cherry soda is also a must! I've even ordered an extra one to go before. We stopped here for lunch on Sunday and are so glad we did. We were greeted by the owner and chef and felt welcome straight away (he also gave us some great wine recommendations). We started with the falafel, hummus and the soup special (the falafel was the best we have ever had, so tasty) For main course I had the fish of the day and my other half had the Athenian meat platter. Finally we finished our meal with the bread pudding, make sure you leave room for dessert because this was amazing! Our grandson was celebrating his birthday with his parents and grandparents, so the Greek place was the destination. Friday place was not busy inside, but pretty busy with outside seating. Teddy, the part owner and our server was entertaining us with a small talk and still presenting the menu and specials of today. Our grandson got the order from the kids menu - moussaka with fries. We decided to order some appetizers. Dolmades - the grape leaves with rice and herbs (excellent particularly with some souse on it). The second one was a Spanakopita cut it four - was good, but the portions was very small. Then came the main course- three of us ordered moussaka (with Greek salad and Greek potatoes on the same plate). Only 2 of us were able to finish it, it was really good, one of the best in Brooklyn. Our daughter in law ordered a linguini with mushrooms - another hit, no complains here. Also, three different Greek beers were enjoyed by three of us (my boss was staying with water). Piece of chocolate cake with candles, happy birthday singing by Teddy and the waiters - all of it was a very nice touch. And for the great finale - the "Windex" shots from Teddy - another great reference to "My Big Fat Greek Wedding". Ambience is some Greek pictures on the wall, with some pictures of the owner with another famous people. Definitely we are coming back, next time we will be visiting Brooklyn. read more

I've lived in Park Slope for 6 years, and I'm not exaggerating when I say Athena Mediterranean Cuisine might be the best restaurant in the neighborhood and my new favorite in all of NYC!! My friend and I went for dinner and were blown away. From the moment we walked in, the staff made us feel so welcome. They were genuinely warm, kind, and incredibly knowledgeable. They took the time to walk us through the specials in such a descriptive way that we wanted to try everything. We both started with the Pumpkin Cinnamon Soup -- cozy, flavorful, and absolutely delicious. Perfect fall vibes. Then came the zucchini chips with tzatziki (a must!) -- crispy, fresh, and totally addictive. For entrees, I had the classic Moussaka and it was honestly the best Moussaka I've ever had. Rich, comforting, and layered perfectly. My friend ordered the special Branzino with olive mashed potatoes and green beans, and we both agreed it was a 20/10. The branzino was cooked to perfection -- flaky and flavorful with every bite. We were way too full for dessert, but the staff surprised me with a slice of raisin rum cake (so good!) with a candle and the entire restaurant sang happy birthday!! It was such a beautiful, unexpected moment. And THEN, as if they hadn't already gone above and beyond, one of the servers literally ran a whole block after us because I forgot my to-go box. WHO DOES THAT?!? This is the kind of place you return to not just for the food (which is outstanding), but for the people. Truly one of the most heartfelt and memorable dining experiences I've had in years. My only regret? I didn't take any photos of the gorgeous food. I love Greek food and have been to Athena a number of times ever since it first opened, but hadn't been there in quite awhile. This morning, taking a longer hike than usual around Park Slope, I found myself at 6th Ave and 14th St. It was a beautiful day and Athena's doors were open and they were setting up for outside eating. I thought it would be great to at least grab a bite. I asked if they were open, and a man who had been sweeping up outside said not for an hour. I'm sure I looked dejected because then he said, "You want something? I'll make it for you." This turned out to be Teddy, Athena's ebullient owner. I was actually have a bit of a low blood sugar crisis, so I immediately accepted his offer. I kept it simple, "Can I just get a spinach pie?" "Sure thing", he said, "I'll just turn on the oven." A short while later I was eating one of the best spinach pies I've ever had. How often have you asked to be served before a restaurant was open? And would anyone even listen to you? Teddy is a marvel, a rare, warm, and generous human being. That his food is so excellent makes Athena a one-of-a-kind establishment. Especially in this day and age! Teddy and Miguel were lovely to me and my family of five for my birthday! They treated me like a Queen and as if I were a member of their family. The food was delicious and home-made by Teddy, one the owners himself using his mother's recipes from the Greek Isles. He recently lost his dear mama in December, but her legacy will live on in her delicious recipes. He even makes his own cakes and baklava cheesecake, yet he let us bring in our own cake that my daughters had made for me- so gracious. It was the best birthday I can remember in a a while. The restaurant is white tablecloth so it's slightly fancy but is frequented by those dressed casually. I went with the veggie sandwich (eggplant, zucchini, red peppers, mozzarella in pita) with a side of fries and it was tasty and fresh. The hummus was delicious and had a unique flavor, the fish roe spread was also good, the artichoke spread I would skip. The grape leaves were some of the best I have had. My girlfriend and I dined here for the first time Tuesday, June 18th. We picked them because of their previous stellar reviews and they did not disappoint. From Stavros , who was our waiter, who recommended this delicious wine to the amazing food prepared by the Chef and owner Spiro. They have outdoor dining!! Came for lunch on a weekday. They have quite alot of tables set up for outdoor dining. About 4 or 5 small tables on the sidewalk right up against the walls of the restaurant, and about 4 more small tables set up on the street with a nice fence and roof. They gave us some pita bread and crackers with hummus to start. The pita bread was nice, warm and soft. Went well with the cool hummus on a hot summer day. Ordered from their lunch special menu which comes with either soup or salad, and soda or iced tea/lemonade SPANAKOPITA with greek salad on the side and a drink. I got the lemonade which was quite refreshing and not too sweet. The spanakopita was great. It had just the right ratio of feta and spinach. It actually tastes more like spinach than feta. The feta wasnt too overwhelming compared to alot of other places that make it with way too much feta. The greek salad was also great. They break up the feta into small pieces and spread it all over the salad, which is nice, rather than having to bite into huge chunks as some other places do. The dressing was also perfect. Not too sour. Wished there were a bit more olives tho. Kotopoulo MAVRODAPHNE -chicken breast with mushrooms and sweet greek red wine over rice pilaf. Also delicious. The sauce was really good and flavored the chicken well. Also came with a side of greek salad. My husband enjoyed this alot. The greek salad went really well with the chicken dish. Overall, I had an enjoyable lunch here. The streets werent that busy when we came so we werent overwhelmed with people walking by us. The atmosphere was nice and somewhat peaceful.
