All the 4 and 5 star reviews are absolutely true. Great food, clean and modern decor, friendly wait staff; it's everything a great coney island should be. The icing on the cake, a glaring oversight in all the reviews here, is that the wait staff is very attractive. So take that for what it's worth. Ordered a simple carryout of chicken noodle soup, only to arrive back to work and have lemon rice soup. No problem, mistakes happen. Only to be disappointed again when I call to say that I can't come back, but would like to get my chicken noodle soup tomorrow. Manager tells me that there has been so much fraud and theft with lunches (due to the Walmart?) that I can only get the correct soup if I bring back the incorrect soup. Now, for a $5.25 bowl of soup you would think that they would want to be a bit more accommodating. I will not be going back to this establishment, and will be letting coworkers know to double check orders - or better yet, go somewhere else. read more

If there is such a thing as an "upscale" Coney Island, this is it. The place is a bit small and gets quite crowded, however, it's because the secret is out! This place has good food and good service. Let's start with the coffee (which is the best place to start, IMO), it is liquid happiness. I have enjoyed both breakfast and lunch foods while dining here and the food is excellent. We got the breakfast burritos again and they were amazingggggg!! Athenian does not disappoint - our burritos were full of perfectly cooked scrambled eggs, hashbrowns and a myriad of meats - bacon, sausage and ham (I always get meat on the side and they have yet to get this wrong). They also give you salsa and sour cream on the side. The salsa is my fave!! It is slightly spicy and has tons of onion and green pepper. We have tried so many things and they are all phenomenal. The food was outstanding, the service only so-so. Was warmly greeted and promptly sat at a clean table near windows. The waitress was friendly and attentive until our order was placed. I had the eggs Benedict florentine, which was prepared to perfection, egg firm, hollandaise creamy and the spinach soft yet not mush. The coffee was some of the best I ever had, just wish I would of seen the waitress more often for refills. To be fair, we can in as they opened and the team was busily cleaning and setting up for the day, not just talking. We used to go often for dinner and breakfast. Decided to check it out after not going for a couple years. Will not be back. The service was horrible. The prices were very high for what you got. Fish sandwich, pita sandwich no fries offered on the side only separate. Coleslaw with the fish sandwich was brownish and tasted horrible. Told at least 2 if not 3 waitresses that it was past the good date. They never removed it from where they stored it under the counter. Someone is going to get sick from it. Won't go back. read more

Rotten Chicken! This "was" one of my wife and I favorite places to eat breakfast or lunch. But after having 1 bad experience- we will no longer go there. I ordered the chicken Kabob and when it arrived I got a fishy smell and figured it may of been coming from a different dish from one of the adjoining tables. I asked my wife to smell the chicken and she said "maybe it's just the seasoning.....I continued on and cut it up and had a few bites....but the smell was still fuming and my wife smelled it again and said to just send it back. When the waitress came back (she was very polite and provided great service) she asked if everything was ok and told her that the chicken had a funky smell.....she immediately said "we were all wondering what that smell was!" (Coming from the kitchen). She took the dish to the back and showed the cooks, and they all smelled it and then threw it out. She came back and asked if I wanted something different (which I didn't after ingesting rotten chicken that was cooked and served to me) but my wife insisted that I eat something since we were already there. I told the waitress to just get me a plain cheese burger. That came quickly and looked good- but after a couple bites my stomach was not sitting well with the thought of the rotten chicken I just ate- I didn't finish anymore of burger. The waitress came back and said the owner/cook said the stench probably came from the wooden skewer the chicken was on. I immediately said it was not the wooden skewer and she agreed but she was doing her job by informing me what the owner/cook said. She also told us that the owner/cook wanted to offer us free dessert. Being that we had our 2 yr old son with us- we accepted and asked her to just bring us some rice pudding- that came out and was not good at all! The waitress dropped the bill and she removed the chicken kabob but they charged me $5.50 for the cheese burger (which I only had a bite because I was sick to my stomach from the rotten chicken). I'm not the type to complain about bad service but the owner/cook should NOT of charged us for the burger and would of been nice if he would of came over to apologize and ask if he could do anything for us. Again it's not about the money of the burger- just the principle of restaurant etiquette (I worked in it for years and pretty much seen it all). And when the staff can smell the stench of the rotten chicken that was cooked- the least you could do is offer to pay for my portion of the meal- not just offer free desert that ended up not being good at all. You lost us as a customer and received a bad review- over a cooking rotten chicken and a $5.50 charge for a burger. Best of luck people If it smells fishy- don't eat it! read more

This is a very good place to get lunch or breakfast. My co-workers and I have ordered there many times because they have great food and are very fast during lunch. We normally get take out but occasionally will dine in. The staff is very friendly and even drove to our business one time when we forgot to grab one of the to go bags. The price is very reasonable for such good quality food. The grilled chicken pita is excellent and the turkey club is a favorite of my co-workers. read more

Athenian is a great place to eat - breakfast or lunch. They are a little more expensive than a typical Coney Island - but the food and service make up for it. It does not take long to get your food and it always tastes great. Regular customer for lunch and occasionally visit at breakfast. read more

I am traveling in the area from Wisconsin, and decided to stop here for dinner. The server was great. The greek salad was great. The chili was good. What I found to be interesting is the gyro meat was cut way to thick and also had no flavor at all. I was amazed that it could taste that bland. I would have said something but I took the gyro to go. I have still never had a gyro as good as the one at Oakland Gyros on Milwaukee's Eastside. The cook behind the counter seemed to be rude. As I waited to pay, and I had no problem waiting, she was busy taking care of some other guests, he kept barking at her. She was trying to finish writing a ticket and he kept barking, "just give it to me". When she came to the counter to take my payment, she asked, " How was everything besides your bad server". Went for lunch, seems like i was the only person that did Not know about this place, cause it was packed! Very clean, excellent fast service, good food! Nice combos for a good value & price! Fantastic coney in a great location! Each time I go it's busy and for good reason-the food is delicious! I love the salads and omelets. Cobb salad and greek salad in particular. Always, always good food & great service. You can tell that they care about keeping the restaurant clean because it's always spotless. Clean floors, tables, and restrooms always make for a better experience when I'm eating out (that sounds funny, I think). The coney dogs are a Detroit classic taste that compares with Lafayette in downtown Detroit. There's generally a good selection of deserts too. We were regulars here for the five years we lived in Novi (just moved a few weeks ago). We ate at Athenian every Sunday for lunch and at least one other weeknight for dinner. The owner and staff are the friendliest people around. The service is quick - even when packed, the wait for a table was never more than about 10 minutes. The food was great! My daughter's absolute favorite menu item was the lasagna - she ate it almost EVERY time we were there. I generally ordered breakfast or a garden burger, but also tried several other menu items - all were delicious. We were so sad to leave Novi and Athenian, and we will definitely stop back in if we are ever in the area! read more
