I went to this place when it first opened about 17 years ago. They are hidden gem in suburban hell, i am almost a little ashamed to tell you all about this place. It is quaint, and small, with a few tables and are closed on Sunday's. They have some of the best and most authentic Greek food in MoCo. The two owners are directly from Greece and everything they make is homemade and from scratch. Washingtonian Magazine did an article on them back in May 2007, saying how great their food was and their tzatziki sauce is the best. Their Souvlaki's, kabobs, and Gyro are the best, lots of meat and sauce, excellent wood grilled pita bread. Watch out for the Big Fat Gyro, it means business (you have been warned). They also have had to find dishes that are very authentic like Orzo with lamb stew and meatballs made with vegetables. Oh, did i mentions baklava to die for; and whole fire roasted chickens over a hardwood charcoal spit. I feel really lucky that I live less than five minutes away from here. I came here for the first time about four years ago after my mom told me that a lot of her coworkers frequented the place. I figured there must be something special about Athens Grill because the surrounding area is purely residential and there really isn't much that would attract non-MVers other than a handful of doctor offices and Lakeforest Mall about ten minutes away. I guess you could say that I came here with high expectations. Fortunately, this was one of the times where my expectations were met to the fullest and I left the restaurant completely in love with Greek food. Even after eating at many other establishments since then, I think that Athens Grill is still my go-to place for Greek food. I usually get the Big Fat Gyro, which can easily feed two people or one very hungry person. I will admit that I have finished one by myself before. I have no regrets though because it's worth every bite (and the stomach discomfort afterwards too). This place is perfect for a casual date with that special someone or even just yourself. I'll have to agree with the other 5 star reviews -- this place is excellent. I got the gyro platter: gyro meat with tzatziki sauce served on top of a greek salad with fries and pita bread. It really is a hole in the wall. I learned about it from Yelp and found it with a GPS. Otherwise I would have never known it was there. There are only maybe...10? tables in the place. The restaurant itself is small and simple but clean and functional. It does booming business (there was a line out the door almost the whole time we were there) but it looks like 95% of the customers are picking up take-out orders so we didn't have any trouble finding a table on a Friday night around 6pm. Just moved to the area and jumped on Yelp to find some good local eats. This place came up on the top of the list and I can see why. Food: I'm a big fan of greek food (I'll put feta or tzatziki on literally anything) and this place delivers on all fronts. I had the chicken souvlaki platter the first time I went here. I got a skewer of chicken breast with greek seasoning, some pita and a mountain of greek salad (opted for double salad in lieu of the fries). Chicken was moist and flavorful and the greek salad got the job done. The 2nd time I went here I had the Gyro sandwich. The meat was tender and delicious and the tzatziki sauce was bright and tasty. Both times, the portions were pretty big and definitely filling. Ambiance: Probably not so applicable a word in this case. The place consists of a storefront, a counter, a few tables and some greek music on the stereo. It's got a little no bs kinda charm and the people there are friendly. Best Gryo in Montgomery County. The gyros here are so full of flavor and they keep having me coming back for more. The Gryo salads are also very filling. This is my first time walking in as I just moved to this area. A friend of mine told me about this restaurant and she said it was great! I ordered the grilled chicken breast dinner with salad and rice. I also ordered hummus and pita to go! Wow...omg the chicken was amazing, I love the Greek spices and could taste the rosemary which I love! It was cooked to perfection the rice was tender and the salad is great. The hummus was creamy, a bit garlicky but the portions for everything were generous and I even got pita with my meal. I will definitely be back this is my new favorite restaurant! read more

This is our favorite Greek restaurant! The food is phenomenal! We usually call in our order since it does take some time to prepare, but we have never been disappointed in the quality. Our favorite is the Breast of chicken salad, but today we had the chicken souvlaki and the Gyro (lamb and beef) and it exceeded our expectations. They have wonderful looking deserts, which I have yet to try since we are always too full. The owner is wonderful and always greets us (by name) and everyone that works there is very hospitable and eager to please. Based on the food alone, I would give Athens Grill at least 3 stars. I had their Olympian special today, with a beef tenderloin stuffed with feta, cooked perfectly, large portion of beef. And they have quite possibly the best Greek lemon potatoes ever conjured anywhere. My daughters got the special lentil soup, which was also amazing. On the other hand, the pork and chicken souvlakis were nothing remarkable, except possibly for being stingy with the portions of meat. But a restaurant meal is a whole experience, and that's where Athens Grill really fell down. We've been there before, so we knew not to expect any sort of dining ambiance. The most notable issue is that the exhaust fan for the place is not working properly. It's seriously bad. We almost had our food packed to go, we were having such a hard time breathing. But then checked out the other side of the dining room, and it seemed a bit better, so we packed up all of our food and moved. Unfortunately, it wasn't enough better. Our family of four ended up leaving with four headaches from the fumes. We also had sore throats. And clothes smelling so atrocious they will all need to be laundered. I can only imagine how awful the guys working there must feel! I'm wondering if that's approaching some kind of health code violation level. Then two of us visited the restrooms. Let's just say: incredibly dirty with sticky, blackish floors. If I wasn't already sick from the fumes, the bathrooms would have done me in. I have been eating at or taking out from Athens grille for 20 years. Consistently delicious. Best take out in the area. I like the gyros souvlaki and my husband usually gets the chicken souvlaki. Always excellent and perfectly cooked. I try to stay away from dessert but they are right in front and freshly made every day so I do indulge occasionally and they are as good as the food. Family-owned restaurant, tucked away in residential Gaithersburg, MD in a strip mall. The owner, Dimitri, seems to always be there. The restaurant is open six days a week and never disappoints. Dimitri has trained the cooks well. The place is nothing special in terms of the ambiance, though I love Greek music and it is always playing! During the warm days, you can eat outside on some cast-iron chairs and tables. Inside, there about fifteen tables that seat 2-4 people. After many meals at the place, I would say about 75-80% of the business is takeout. I have done both and the portions are about the same in each (BIG and YUMMY!). If eating in, you place your order, pay, leave a tip for the cooks, sit down, smell the aroma of the wood-burning brick oven cooking your food, and wait for your delicious meal. The cooks will call your receipt number to go up to pick up your food, unless you are a regular, then they will just give you the nod (NO wait staff). If you are local and want to do takeout, I strongly suggest calling ahead, unless you want to watch the cooks do their magic on your meal. The rest of the strip mall has a CVS Pharmacy, dry cleaners (good), and a beer distributor (limited selection), if you want to run some quick errands while waiting on your takeout. If eating in, you bus your own table clean when done eating. Many Greek standards are cooked at Athens including Gyros, Souvlaki, Moussaka, and Kabobs, as well as several other nice dishes. Of course, chicken and lamb are featured, but the chefs do a very nice job on fish dishes as well. Most dishes are served with either rice or french fries, grilled pita bread, and Greek salad. I would say the only disappointment I have had is that Greek potatoes are not available as a side dish selection, especially with the lamb dishes. The price of most meals range from $8 to $20. The portions are very large! Free refills on drinks (ONLY nonalcoholic products). And let me say that the Greek desserts, many homemade, are wonderful too! I would love it if Dimitri got a liquor license and served Greek wine and beer, but again with 75-80% of the business as takeout, I don't blame him. I eat at Athens about twice a month, if not more, and have never been disappointed. I wish the restaurant had a little bit more ambiance, served Greek potatoes as a side, and offered alcoholic beverages, but Dimitri is a smart guy and I am sure he has probably tried these things in the past and now lives with a great takeout business and a small in-house serving. read more

I am a huge fan of Athens Grill. This place is less than a mile from my crib, and I take full advantage. I usually order the half rotisserie chicken with some rice pilaf and pita bread. Whatever chicken seasoning they use is fantastic! However, sometimes the chicken comes out too dry. Nonetheless, the baklava makes up for this fact. I have never eaten in here unless I was waiting for my pictures to finish developing at CVS. I recommend carryout. I have been coming to Athens Grill since I was 5. They opened up in 1989. Stopped by on a whim while my kid was at Mathnasium next door after seeing the great review. Ordered the salmon platter to go. They were busy but the man at the front whom I presume was the owner assured me that they would get it done for me when I needed it. The salmon was high quality, the portions were great, everything was fresh. Went back the following week for the same as well as trying the chicken kabobs and filet mignon kabobs. Chicken was good but the filet mignon was AMAZING because - well, it's filet mignon. The menu said it would come with bernaise sauce and it did not (maybe covid menu change) but it was perfect anyway. The grilled pita had an amazing flavor. I am not crazy about their house vinaigrette as it seems more oil than vinegar but if you get it on the side, just be careful how you pour it. We ended up using a lower oil version at home anyway. This is my favorite restaurant, bar none. If I were asked where I'd like to have my last meal, it would be Athens Grill. We have been going there since it opened 15 or 20 years ago. We've moved five times since we first went there and on trips back to the area, even after we moved to Iowa and later to Southern California, we've made it a point to go there whenever possible on trips to the East Coast. Everything we've ever had there has been absolutely delicious. My husband usually orders the gyro platter and I order the peasant salad and chicken souvlaki sandwich (with pita bread). Their Greek dressing is superb and can be purchased online. Dimitri, his wife and two daughters have always been so hospitable and have remembered us even when we've been away for several years. I was craving a gyro and fries from Marathon Deli in College Park, but since I live an hour away, I wasn't willing to drive there to eat. After reading the other reviews, I decided to give this place a try. I was hooked after the first bite. The gyro meat was really flavorful and tender and the tzatziki sauce was delicious as well. It was definitely one of the best gyro I've had! The fries weren't as good as Marathon since they put their special seasoning mix on it, but they were crisp and hot. I can't complain. The restaurant is on the small side but has a good amount of seating. It was really busy when we went on a Friday night around 6 and every table was taken with a continuous line of people ordering.
