Been a couple years since ive eaten a gyro here. Used to frequent the gyro shop when Gus had it inside the gas station. Not impressed today. $16 for gyro fry and a drink. The gyro sauce was heavily dosed with lemon juice making it bitter. When I stopped in they had been open for about 25 min. Clearly nobody cleaned the grease from the day before. The fries had a taste of deep fried Mexican food. Ruined it. I may check back in another couple years. Sorry. read more

If you're looking for gyros and/or craft beer this is the place! The gyro plate can easily feed two although they could do a better job with proportions (not enough pita bread) and it would be better with diced tomatoes versus slices. Diced cucumbers would be another good touch. For the beer, they have rare options both on tap and also in the fridge for purchase. They have flights as well! Rare for a restaurant but a pleasant surprise. The main reason for losing a star was due to the ambiance, or lack of one. It's just a big open room and was almost full so it was SO loud inside. We sat by the bathrooms just for a quieter experience, and I'm deaf in one ear! Good food and beer, but not a good place to relax during mealtime. read more

Came here for the first time recently and wished I'd had discovered Athens sooner! The restaraunt is rather unassuming, right next to kwik trip. Everything I have tried so far has really hit the spot. Especially the gyro. The entire staff is very friendly. The inside is quite charming, and I love that they offer counter service or bar service with a beautiful full bar. Even online ordering with curbside pickup is very efficient, and they have a drive thru The Pinball machines tucked away in the back, as well as the shelf full of assorted card and board games paired with tons of natural light creates a warm and laid back atmosphere. Sports fans will like their big screen television as over the bar area. They offer rotating specials every day of the week as well. Totally legit Greek food and beer selection. Beertender Jordan is super knowledgeable about beers and was very helpful picking out some great beers. We bought Drekker's Loki is my Homeboy Lactose DIPA and Bearded Iris Ever Clever DDH. Loki was from their beer fridge. They allow you to buy from the beer fridge and consume on premises if you like and that's cool. As far as food, great selection of Greek food. We had the Eggplant Gyro. Vegetarian and excellent. I never would have found this place except we were in Westport with a relative and he suggested it for dinner. He asked if we like gyros - heck yes... so over to the Athens we went. I love the gyros at the Parthenon and these were just as good. Lots of meat, sauce, onions. Fresh and soft pita. Excellent! We didn't take advantage of their extensive beer selection and the bar. This place is both completely unassuming and a bit intimidating from the outside. It's located in an odd little strip mall of sorts which isn't overly inviting. And the parking lot is both confusing and always full. A sign of a popular place, but is it good? The answer is a resounding yes! The interior is much more spacious than you could even imagine and the bar is large and extremely well stocked. It's counter service and seat yourself but getting a seat wasn't too difficult. While busy it didn't feel crowded and I look forward to becoming something of a regular here. read more

Despite the remote location, the place is a popular destination for hungry diners. Even with it's popularity, service is prompt and always friendly. I've been going to Athens for years. When we lived on Madison's north side I was there a couple times a month. They were the best Gyros in the Madison area. Gus, the owner developed his own recipe, procured spices from Greece whenever he could, blender his own meats. You could smell the aromatic spices before even walking into the gas station where they used to be located. The gas station closed, having been sold to Kwik Trip. Athens went to a food truck concept, and then a brick and mortar bar and grill combo. Somewhere along the line Gus retired or sold, or just became less involved. Over time Athens Grill has lost some of Gus' quality. The gyro meat has gotten steadily more bland. There's plenty of pepper, but the aromatic smells and flavors of Mediterranean oregano, marjoram, and other spices has been diluted. I don't know if they changed the recipe or just can't get the top quality spices they used to, but you can tell the difference. That said, portions are still very generous. The bar and grill concept serves Athens well. It's warm, casual, and friendly feeling. Food, other than gyros are quite good. Cheese curds are fantastic. I just miss Gus' gyros. read more

My go to lunch place at work. Classic Gyros are the best but I always tend to try their eggplant gyro. It is always cooked to perfection. They have opened a very spacious restaurant by the gas station which has the same setting as the old palace but much more space and drinks. The lunch is usually pretty crowded even with all this space but the service is fast and efficient. U will never be disappointed. Just an inside tip- if you are taking gyro to go, it's always a good idea to get 2 gyro plate with some extra pita for 4. Athens Grill is doing the window service as usual during the CV19 restrictions. We called ahead and paid by credit card. When I got there I just had to wait a short time and got our food. The same good quality as eating in the restaurant. Saved money by not sitting at the bar and having a few drinks too! The servers come out with masks and surgical gloves and the food is in a paper bag with handles. They are trying really hard to make this safe for you and them too. I go here as a convenience and the food is pretty good, although expensive for a drive through. I never spend less than $50. What I hate is when it looks like they are open with the sign on but really closed an hour earlier - it's more of a detour to get to than it looks. I also hate when they hand you the credit card machine defaulted to a 20% tip. I'm not going to pay $8 tip at the drive through. During Covid I said something to the girl at the window about something (don't recall now, maybe about the sign saying they were open when they weren't) and she asked me what I wanted her to do about it - she literally said that to me, then closed the window while I was still talking. Stopped in for the first time with my in-laws and two-year-old daughter. We all loved it. The space is open and inviting with plenty of room for groups of all sizes. The bar area is a nice spot and they had ~8 beers on tap, including at least one on nitro. It was a solid variety including some of the better local brews. They also have a fully stocked bar. As for the food...it was all great. The adults all did gyros. They were fresh and delicious. We also shared a half order of the wings. They had an excellent dry rub and two great dipping sauces, plus a nice, refreshing salad of cucumber, apple and olive oil. My daughter did the macaroni and cheese and scarfed it down. It was a nice portion and you could tell they used real cheese. My only gripe is that it isn't closer to downtown. read more
