My family and I went here yesterday for a late lunch and it was great! I had their lunch special which was a lamb gyro with a small bowl of soup. This was my first time customizing my own gyro and they've got some good options for toppings. The soup was also really good; I couldn't pronounce the name, but it had rice, lemon, and chicken. My wife also had a gyro and she said she liked it too. (Didn't get the full details, but I couldn't see that she was happy). The service was great, everyone was very attentive and friendly. There were a lot of workers there, but I assume that they can get pretty busy during actual meal hours. The ambiance was great for our family. The decor was nice and vibrant, and there wasn't the pressure of a traditional sit down restaurant, which is great when you have an active 1 year old. Overall, I'd definitely come back! read more

Located in Greenway Station, this Greek restaurant is a nice option for lunch. Tucked into one of the buildings, you have to pay attention to find it in the row of storefronts. The interior was reasonably spacious and clean. The format was more or less a street food approach in which you walk up, order and customize your toppings and accompaniments. I chose the Gyro Plate with Hummus, Feta, Olives and Onions. It was accompanied by Pita. It was quite tasty and made for a filling lunch. With food, tax and a small tip, my final bill was about $13.50. It was a reasonable deal. If I am working in the area again and have a taste for Mediterranean fare, I'll certainly pay another visit. read more

We got takeout from Freska Mediterranean Grill one night for dinner. We ordered the "Veggie Feast" (no meat, so perfect for vegetarians) for about $9. It came with a generous portion of food: a whole pita, 3 pieces of falafel, feta cheese, baba ghanoush, hummus, and tabouleh. Everything was delicious! The nutty-flavored creamy dressing really brought it all together. The falafel was my fave with it being crispy and flavorful on the outside and fluffy on the inside. It was a refreshing light meal in terms of grease/fats (not portion). It feels very healthy, but you still finish the meal with a full belly! It's a very satisfying meal. The one thing I've heard is that their hours of operation are unpredictable at times (regardless of their posted times), so I suggest going into the store to order and grab your food rather than ordering it ahead of time online/phone to pick up later. Needed lunch and in the Middleton shopping complex where I was, I first considered Noodles, knowing they sometime have appeal, I walked in, quickly previewed the menu and recalled that they have terrible Phad Thai, not dreadful terrible, just not proper Thai tasting. The rest of the menu was stuff I'd attempted years back and never had an actual 'this is really good' type of thing, I opted to try Zupa, which I'd never tried before, and it was just across the parking lot. Quick relocation, but as I was walking in, I see a longer line than I'm willing to patiently join. Next, I see the Greek lettering of a place I'd essentially steered a wide berth around, having never been truly impressed with most Greek foods. Grape leaves remind me of frog skin for some reason. Having never eaten a frog, aside from the legs, which didn't really taste like chicken, but they were better than the rest of the frog I feel is a safe statement. Nor have I licked a frog, though one day I hope to venture down to the Amazon for a frog licking, third eye opening, shamanic guided experience. So shawarma is something I've been hearing about in foodie world, but I didn't even know what it consisted of. So todays the day. I revealed my ignorance, and the man across the counter obliged, showing me grilled chicken. I guess I was expecting something more like the stuff I've seen carved from a large log of preformed goat or some other Mediterranean animal's carcass. Chicken. Cool. So I went with the sandwich version, misunderstanding his thick accent, I thought I heard him say Phylo dough, but (I didn't even notice it was a pita till I was paying) I was informed I was going to have 4 selections from the array of ingredients I saw right at that moment. A salsa looking, cucumber and tomato salad, some black olives, a parsley sliced onion, and hummus. Also instead of taziki, an aioli that was delicious. As I proceeded towards the end of the line I see that proper olives (Kalamata) which are far superior to the American bland black ones (fun as a child, to put on our fingers, irritating the grownups) as well as actual chickpeas! I think that sums up all the items in my new and highly anticipated lunch. Decades ago, my wife's dearest friend, a greek woman, whose family owned an ialian and a greek restaurant, first introduced me to greek cuisine. As a whole, I wasn't entirely impressed. As mentioned, the grape leaves which contained some blend of puréed or minced cloven hooves mountain climb goat or ram or something, along with whatever was part of this tiny greek burrito looking thing, I stopped writing the previous words a few days back. I just saw it hadn't been completed, but I can't recall my specific thoughts, all I do recall was that I really liked whatever I had eaten and want to positively reflect that to support the restaurant. Freska is one of my favorite places to get Mediterranean food in the Madison area. I'd describe this restaurant as like a Chipotle, but for Mediterranean food - you first make a choice of type of dish (sandwich or plate) and the main meat/filling you want, then you go down their line of toppings and sauces to add to your dish. Their ingredients are always very fresh and delicious - you really can't go wrong with any of their options. Their side dishes and desserts are always good too. I have to get their baklava whenever we visit! Overall, I would highly recommend Freska to anyone looking for delicious, authentic food in a welcoming and inviting atmosphere. My favorite West Side Mediterranean restaurant. It's super easy to order ahead online and pick up at the register. I recently ordered two meals with double meat on both and it's more than enough for four people. I especially enjoy the chicken shawarma and chicken gyro meats. Lots of delicious sides to choose from including hummus, Greek pasta salad, etc. Plus you get either brown rice or couscous, and plenty of pizza bread either regular or whole wheat. We got lamb and beef gyro plate and beef kabobs for entree. The gyro was so good. It didn't have that gummy texture that I tend to hate. The beef kabobs were delicious as well. It had very simple seasoning but so well cooked. Their vegetables and meat qualities were superb and fresh. Sometimes, you don't need to season too much when you have good quality products. For salad, we got tabbouleh. I would prefer it has more parsleys than bulgur. Additionally, we got their baklava too. Their baklava was good. I would say it was in the sweeter side. Wish it had more pistachio in it but I did love the cinnamon flavor. Their lemon chicken soup was ok as well. Definitely will come back for a quick fix. read more

They also have soup, desserts, and a small cooler of beer & wines. Really anyone should be satisfied here! I went with the plate. You choose a base (rice or couscous), protein, one sauce, and four other "toppings" or sides. I recommended doing what I did and doubling up on the protein so you can get some falafel along with your meat! Seriously these were some of the best falafel balls I have had anywhere!! They are often dry. These were moist and perfect. Also available: three kinds of soups, salads, dessert limited wine/beer, and more. Really, really yummy! I ordered take out while on the road for work recently. For less than $10 (including tip!), I got a really good, filling meal. I ordered the Veggie Feast, which includes (I may not remember everything) falafel, baba ganoush, tabbouleh, greens, and pita. Everything was super tasty! The online ordering system said my order would be ready in 30-40 minutes. Honestly, I think it probably was ready about 5 minutes after I ordered it. You can't go wrong with anything on the menu. The meats are always tender and flavor penetrated throughout, you'll never have that questionable bite that makes you regret life. All the ingredients are identifiable because everything is fresh. Freska was great, even for take-out (which isn't always the case even with good food). I had the chicken shwarma plate with cous cous and Mediterranean pasta salad for sides. I also added a falafel small plate. The chicken had great flavor and texture. Not spongy, overcooked, or fatty. The wheat pita was chewy and delicious. The cous cous was, well, cous cous. Nothing special, but still tasty. The pasta salad was the same. My only disappointment was that the falafel was a little overcooked. The inside tasted great, but the outside tasted a bit like burnt toast. The Mediterranean offerings served by Freska are far from transcendent. Covered in striking purple cabbage, my chicken schwarma looked fantastic. Unfortunately, the texture of the chicken was slightly mushy and the flavors were muted. Though pleasantly grilled, the quality of the homemade pita was far below what I've experienced at Banzo or Mediterranean Café. There wasn't a line when we walked in but the daily special on the TV display was very enticing and so we ordered a couple of dishes. - The Greek half chicken and the spinach pie. The food is very good and the staff were very friendly. Food is so good we went back to order another half chicken to go. The place is also very bright and simply decorated. I really enjoyed Freska! I got the Veggie Feast and it was so nice to eat something fresh and healthy at a fast paced. The falafel was really yummy and I was impressed with how much food I got for the price. Plus! The Pita! Oh, the Pita! So soft and fluffy and warm and perfect to go as a side- could not recommend it enough. I'll definitely be coming back! They do have the option of online ordering. But, at a place like this, I think it's nice to just walk down the line chipotle-style to build your mediterranean feast. The only thing I knocked off a star for was that this place is clearly frequented by nearby offices since the people in front and behind me both ordered 5 or 6 items to go. I got the gyro and sweet potato waffle fries (not a typo). The gyro was good, full of flavor. They didn't over do it with any of the ingredients, yet they did maximize my basket, which made it a more manageable sandwich. The sweet potato waffle fries were a pleasant surprise.
