We had Athens Moving Experts help up with an internal move in order for our floors to be refinished. They did an awesome job! They were very careful as they had to move furniture from the 2nd floor to the 1st floor. Friendly and efficient. Kudos to Phil, Rich, and Kelo for doing such a great job. Three men arrived and wrapped my furniture with care. Alex, Dionte, and Kyle were very thorough. I lived in a second floor apartment and they had to use an elevator for most of my items. I was surprised that they loaded the elevator and then didn't promptly unload it once the elevator went down to the bottom floor. Instead, my items rode up and down several times with different people getting on the elevator but not the movers. Nothing was damaged but I was surprised by this method of moving things. read more

Employees did not comply with the move out instructions given by the staff. They propped open our main front entrance to move. I explained this was not the procedure and they argued and stated they were not going to move. My compromise was to allow 30 mins. They exceeded, that by nearly 2 hrs. I would have even allowed that but the workers played loud music while going back and forth the entire time. I'm all for making the move process easier but you need to speak with the office site going forward. Not happy with the team and how they communicated with the staff. Would love to have helped push this company with other Cortland communities but this will not be the case. read more

Edit: Thank you for your comment, Mike. I agree that there was a miscommunication and I dropped the ball on initially inquiring about your mask policy. For clarification, however, the 14 steps were outside, in an alleyway, to remove the piano from the first location. No reasonable person would demand mask wearing outside up 14 steps. The 6 steps were at the second location - my front stoop into my house. I asked that the masks be worn for that part of the move - into my house, and I was told no. It's a tough time and there are no right answers unfortunately. I understand your position - I am just giving a heads up to others who are interacting with the pandemic like I do. *** I recently bought a used piano and had Athens move it from the piano seller's house to mine. The 3 guys showed up at the first location right on time and worked efficiently. However, if you are concerned about covid transmission, you might want to first check with them on their mask-wearing practices. I was wearing a mask, but the lead walked right up to me for my signatures and I had to request that he first put on a mask since we would obviously be in close contact. He said he didn't know if he had one (!?), but he then found one in the truck and put it on, which was great. Then I asked if they would all please put on masks when they arrived at my house and entered with the piano, and he said that moving a piano is hard physical work and since wearing a mask would be a health risk (!?), they don't ask their guys to wear them. So I made sure to rush to the house before they got there to open up windows for cross breeze, but it was still way less than ideal. I also felt very guilty because the woman who I was getting the piano from -- at the first location -- is elderly and with a severe preexisting condition. I had to apologize for not first ensuring the piano movers I hired would wear masks. :( I hadn't thought to check on this before hiring Athens, because I had used Bellhop a few weeks prior for our move from our apartment into our new house. The apartment was a third floor walk up and we had tons of extremely heavy furniture - latex mattresses, very heavy armoires and desks, etc., and all three guys wore masks (or at least bandannas) for nearly 3 hours straight. So it didn't occur to me that piano movers wouldn't put masks on for the 5 minutes it takes to heft a piano up 6 front steps into someone's house. Again, everything else went fine. No surprise charges, fast work, no other issues. I just want to warn others who may be on the more cautious end of the spectrum, like I am. Call me Karen, but I just think that during an airborne pandemic, more care could be taken - especially when specifically requested. read more

We had an EXCELLENT experience with Athens Moving a week ago. We only needed some heavy furniture transported and moved into our new house (no boxes). But! Most of the furniture had to be moved between the second and third floor of our elevator-less townhome. Pharaoh and Cabe were our movers and they did an amazing job! They were SO quick and professional and extremely careful. Our stairs are tight and they didn't knick anything. There wasn't one scratch to any of our furniture or marks on our walls. I have a long, vertical dent down my $2800 stainless refrigerator. I even mentioned something to them as they were tightening on moving day (that they were tightening straps too much)! I sent photos to the company and they sent someone to try to fix to no avail (which was quite obvious from damage pics) and after several calls I found out their max payout was $200 since I did not pay ~$400 extra dollars for their super insurance that morning when signing papers. I 'd rather write the truth on the internet than accept $200 so that others may plan find out the extra insurance cost ahead of time and factor it in to the final cost for comparisons. read more

We used Athens about 2 years ago in Aug, 2019, before our recent move in May. The first time we hired them, the experience was top notch. Everything was moved and reassembled without damage. All at a reasonable rate. Fast forward 2 years and we are in need of a movers. The only team that we were interested in hiring was Athens. We called and set everything up. This time we were going to let them handle almost everything, packing and moving. The quote was quite a bit higher than before, but we both thought it was worth it, knowing they would handle everything and remove the worry from us. However, this time, every aspect of the move was worry piled upon top of worry and frustration. It started the day before the move when they showed up to the house to pack. They had a team of about 6 guys who were there about 4 hours. Just to paint a picture , our home was big 4000 sq/ft 5 bedrooms etc. We have a ton of stuff. Needless to say, hardly anything got packed up that evening. Worried about the effort put into the packing, we called Athens. They assured us that anything not pack the day before the move, would be packed professionally the day of the move. That turned out to be false. They showed up and just started putting things in boxes without a plan and putting it on the truck. So no big deal, we had to look around for things after our move. If that had been the only thing! The move started when 8 guys showed up around 10am. It was none of the team that moved us our first time around, a younger team, but we thought that since they were part of Athens, all should be fine. However, after a few hours of moving, we realized that the team was undersized and inexperienced and there was no way that it would wind up getting done in a reasonable timeframe. Our move took longer than expect, again, things happen. Its hard to predict how much crap people have. I get that. What I didn't get was the lack of effort put in by the team. Again a hard job, but the amount of time they spent standing around , joking with others, chasing each other around and a general just Laissez faire attitude. I know its a tough job, and stress relief comes with any job. But we had a dead line. The condo we were moving to had given us a time frame in which we could use the freight elevator. We expressed this concern to the team several times, but it fell on deaf ears. The time frame was not picked at random. Given they said that he move would be around 8-9 hours, we picked the time that made sense for them. Luckily, they called me and asked if there was anyway we could swap times with the elevator. Well, instead of taking advantage of the situation, the team told me they were gonna take a break and grab some food. No worries, until their quick break turned into a one hour and 45 minute delay. After waiting around while they were holding our household items hostage in their moving truck, we finally got started unloading around 6pm. So now, do the math here. We are already at 8 hours and we are at the half way point. Now we are getting really concerned about getting moved in 1 day. After basically moving stuff myself and trying to encourage them to try and finish, all the while watching them stand around or chase each other around the complex, they finally "finished" at about 11.15 or so. They then handed us a bill for 14 hours. It was about midnight at this point. With the breaks and the bill calculation period , it was no were close to 14 hours. Maybe 12, but that was generous given the effort. After arguing with them for 30 minutes we got the bill down to 12 hours that we reluctantly agreed to pay. Then, they had the audacity to ask for a tip. Work quality you ask? Not very good. Here is a shorten list: Broken items: - 60 inch TV - 6 lamps (2 dropped and 4 shades crushed). - 2 desks - coffee table - Wheel on mobile tool box - Scuff marks on the bottom of 2 couches Lost items: - Ninja blender - Dinning table top - Remote control for electric lounge chair (ch - Remote and motor system to bed Misc: - 3 Pickup truck loads of items unmoved ! - several boxes dropped and spilled - 55 inch TV with large scratch on screen. - Damaged from door and walls - Nothing re-assembled (we paid for an end to end move!) We called their office and complained a day later. After listening to a manager bemoan and cry to us about his woes, we got them to pay for a desk and a couple of lamps that they dropped right in front of us. The total bill came in around 5000 bucks. Hardly worth it. I could have hired some drunk college kids for the same effort for way less money. After reflecting on the entire ordeal, we surmised that they had changed their business somewhat by expanding with younger team members too rapidly. We were the ultimate victims of their "success". Hire these guys at your own risk! Athens is not what it used to be. read more

I have waited a bit before writing this review since my move at the end of June. I wanted to write something measured, and I wanted to give others an insight into what I believe was a lack of transparency and an over abundance of salesmanship on the part of this company. I say this as someone who paid 3,000 dollars for a move and felt that some of this cost was inflated due to the inefficiency of an added and inept worker. I moved over a two-day interval to a home no more than ten miles away from the home I was in. In part one of the move, I had three movers, one of which was the owner of this company, move me to two storage units near my home. It was an uneventful move ,which made me hope that part two would be the same. It wasn't. The second part of the move was the next day. I had had to argue with the booking agent that I did not need six people for what remained of the move and I got him to give me five men after a long discussion. I asked him for five efficient men because I would have been thrilled with a four-man team. He assured me that I would be satisfied. By the way, Athens always asks you to take out more insurance when they show up at your door the day of the move. Keep this in mind as you read ahead. My broker and I watched while the men moved me out and he noted, as I did, that there was one team member who seemed to do everything wrong. This meant that the other team members had to redo his work--wrapping, stacking or taking things apart. In fact, my daughter had to help him with a lamp because he didn't seem to know how to handle packaging. I asked one of the movers about this young person and he told me that the man had under two week's worth of experience. When my daughter had to get someone else to help this guy with moving something upstairs---and my broker noted that he was wasting my time by being non-productive--I called the booking agent and asked him to remove this person from my move as people were redoing his work and he was thus impeding productivity. The booking agent did not oblige my wishes. When we got to my new home, I reiterated what I had told the men to start with at the first house--that furniture should go in the middle of the room as we were going to paint . This would make their work easier. They just set in the room, but they didn't have to "set" it in a place. Every man understood this except the worker who I had complained about. He stacked furniture against the walls, forcing others to repeatedly move his work. This lack of comprehension continued, as the day progressed. In fact, this young man took about forty-five minutes to figure out how to unbox a TV set he had boxed and place it in a corner. He also put a cabinet in place upside down. Yes. Upside down. The next day, my daughter and I innocently went to put on the TV. We found that the "new hire" had forgotten or lost the power cord, which is needed for us to view anything. It was my daughter's set so I ordered a cord from Amazon and left a call with the booking agent about this problem. He chastised me for rushing to buy the cord. I should have asked him about the power cord first and he was markedly hostile about my having bought it on my own. It was a set amount, so I didn't understand his anger. He stated this new hire was loved by other clients. He was kind of dumbfounded when I asked how many people had praised him in the handful of times he was on the job. Obviously, three thousand dollars--now paid--didn't merit an apology of any sort for this fellow's negligence. Instead, I got a mountain of paperwork to fill out for the reimbursement--and I mean a ton of pictures and documentation! I also found artwork which was to be placed in center of the bonus room in a gutted bathroom. You know who put it there, don't you? And then there was quiet. Weeks past without getting a check in the mail for the power cord that I was told I should have waited to buy and which Athens would have bought for me. When I did contact the lead agent three weeks later, he told me that he had been on vacation. The question of using petty cash for a timely reimbursement hung in the air. I did their paperwork, but couldn't they have responded more immediately? Would it have been more appropriate for me to wait three weeks for a power cord that they would have purchased because that was how the booking agent told me things were done? Honestly, it was demeaning to ask for the check. You know, I didn't need three men for the move out of the storage unit. I hired two men from a rival company and had an easy move out of one storage unit. As for using five men for my move---well, four men without a handicap like the fifth "new guy" would have been a more effective situation. After all this time, I don't think extra insurance would have made this company more responsive or more responsible for their errors or their workmen. Sometimes a smaller team is better. Bear this in mind when you are looking for movers. read more

I hired Athens Moving Experts after getting a recommendation from Angie's List. I called and was provided a quote that was a little higher then others I called, but there were no hidden fees, which I appreciated. The office staff answering the phones were very nice and helpful. I did have to cancel last minute due to my home closing date change, however, they were still able to accommodate my move. I had them pick up my items from one house and deliver to the new house the next day. There was a charge for that, but it was worth it. I would like to give a special thanks to the team lead on both days, Omar. He was very friendly and he ensured the move went very smoothly while helping the other men when they needed it. I used these movers to take my already packed belonging, put them in a truck and into 1st floor storageunit acoue blocks away. 3 guys, not very fast moving. We're told numerous times not to put Anything on top of Antique dining table. Packed truck wrong. No room for table and other large items including my bike and 4 outdoor metal chairs.Left some of my belongings and their own cart behind at the apartment building. Didn't bother to apologize. Packed a box at back of storage unit they were told needed to stay out until last. Crammed my belongings into a 10x30 storage unit with 13 ft of room empty. Not professional at all. Started off with no text message confirming move, no email. When I spoke to owner about what happened he was rude and argumentative. I do not recommend them at all. Funny moving to NC my belonging all fit in a 26 ft truck with room to spare. read more

I'm not too familiar with moving costs, I was about to hire this company, but the guy I spoke with on the phone got agitated once I start asking about the cost of each moving service, he start yelling because I wanted to get more information on how the company divide it's services and what is the full package cost! His reason is that I'm not giving him enough information, then I asked him to provide me more details of their services, but he was not willing to, so we ended the call. read more

The movers with Athens did a fantastic job moving my furniture and household goods from Mebane to Raleigh. They paid careful attention to the wrapping and the placement in the truck, so absolutely nothing was damaged or broken in any way. I was thrilled! They were professional, polite, worked hard, and were very helpful at all times. The owner got right back to me when I was scheduling the move, so there were no worries at all. I am editing my previous review after Mike called me. I may have confused them with another company when expecting the drive time to not be included in the price. I am primarily unhappy with my mattresses being wet. Feeling that the time was inaccurate was a much smaller offense that my reaction was heightened to after my mattresses were wet. And by the time being inaccurate I felt that 10-15 minutes should've been excluded from my charge based on breaks and the drive. So again my main complaint is my mattresses. Mike called to discuss the initial review which was not well communicated. He implied that I must not be able to pay my bills since it is a month late and I am just now leaving a review. I corrected him that I felt bad initially and did not want to get the movers in trouble. Especially moving during COVID times, times are hard for many and I didn't want to cause extra grief. The movers mentioned theyd get a bonus if I left a good review so I felt bad if I left a poor review . I kept my unhappiness to myself. After explaining my situation to multiple friends and one in particular this past weekend It reignited my annoyance with the situation and I wrote a review. As a single female proudly paying my own bills, Mike's comment really triggered me. I felt his tone was more accusatory as opposed to trying to understand my point of view. I appreciate him sticking out the conversation, however, as we did eventually reach an understanding. I am not happy that my mattresses got wet. They were clearly sat down in water as only 1-2 edges were wet so it was not just from walking through the rain. Other than that and explaining the misunderstanding with the cost, the movers were nice and professional. If you have concerns I'd recommend calling them the day of or day after and have pictures.
