UPDATE (July 2, 2026): After the branch manager officially refused my requests for a billing correction and told me the case was closed, I updated this review and filed a formal complaint with the North Carolina Utilities Commission (NCUC). Within 24 hours of filing the state complaint, the company completely reversed its "final" decision. Instead of handling this through proper corporate email channels, the moving crew bypassed management and created an unauthorized text group chat, dragging both me and my girlfriend into a high-pressure conversation using intimidating language to demand we accept an informal tip refund. Following this severe boundary and data privacy violation, the office has now forced through a $205.35 refund to my card (returning the $180.35 tip and a $25 credit). While they claim they stand by their service, their actions speak louder than their corporate text responses. I have kept the unauthorized group chat intact and am handing all text records over to the NCUC analyst. I am keeping this complaint active and leaving this 1-star review in place until the state finishes investigating the remaining padded labor charges and their highly unprofessional conduct. I would highly recommend looking elsewhere for a moving company in Raleigh. My experience with Athens Moving Experts was incredibly frustrating due to deceptive billing practices, careless handling of property, and an absolute lack of professionalism. First, be aware of how they manipulate hourly billing to pad the clock. I was charged a flat $150 travel fee, but they also use the hourly labor rate ($180/hr) to double-charge you for extended time on the road. The crew took over 2 hours just to load the truck at a storage facility fully equipped with flat rolling carts and a massive freight elevator. Yet, they miraculously managed to unload the entire truck into my new apartment in just 43 minutes, despite having NO elevator and forcing them to haul everything up a flight of stairs. The math doesn't lie: they deliberately dragged their feet at the start of the day to run up the bill. My girlfriend also noted that the movers consistently disappeared and took unauthorized breaks throughout the process. On top of that, the drive between locations took nearly an hour for a straightforward, 30-minute route. When they finally got to my apartment, I watched them stand around the truck rather than actively working, all while the hourly clock was running on my dime. Management completely dismissed this massive discrepancy and refused a partial refund. Second, the crew's behavior was completely unprofessional. They were actively vaping while handling my belongings. Worse, they left their trash, a Gatorade bottle, littered right on the walkway outside my apartment door. According to the North Carolina Utilities Commission (NCUC) Moving 101 Guide, crews are explicitly required to remove debris and packing materials on delivery day, clearly, this crew doesn't care about state regulations or basic cleanliness.  Finally, their handling of my items was careless. Multiple heavy-duty boxes arrived completely caved-in and crushed because they stacked items improperly on the truck. When confronted, management tried to blame me by claiming my boxes were "already showing signs of wear" before the move to avoid liability, which is entirely false. If you want a company that respects your time, treats your belongings with care, cleans up after themselves, and doesn't overcharge you, do not hire Athens Moving Experts. read more

Athens Moving Experts is the BEST mover in Raleigh, and I should know! I have moved 9X across the Triangle area over the last 28 years, and I have used ALL the "popular names" that you see on moving trucks driving around town (I won't mention any names, nor throw anyone under the bus, but one of them destroyed a piece of my living room furniture beyond repair last move). I used Athens today for the first time, with a crew of Monte, Josh, Mohammed, Israel, and Elijah, (and a few others) and they did all the right things automatically, without me asking. NO OTHER MOVER in Raleigh has EVER done all these things for my moves: They called me days beforehand to confirm day and time. They called again when they were on their way. They wrapped the front door posts (both old and new location). They laid down runners along all traffic routes inside the house (both old and new location). They disassembled all the heavy furniture. They carefully wrapped each piece in quilts, then in addition they shrink-wrapped EVERY piece of furniture, even the padded upholstered furniture. They carefully wrapped every dish, glass, pot, pan, etc. They labeled every box with its room and contents. They carefully loaded the first 26 foot van strategically placing each puzzle piece "high and tight" with zero gaps, to maximize the load and to protect from movement. And they called a SECOND TRUCK when they saw in advance it would be needed, at no extra charge, and it arrived in time to keep everyone loading nonstop. They may not be the "cheapest price", but they are certainly the HIGHEST QUALITY OF SERVICE that you will find in the Triangle area! I have learned after 9X moves, "you get what you pay for"!!! Can you really believe reviews??? In my case YESSSSSSSSSSSS!!!! It was our 1st time EVER using a moving company (beer and pizza doesn't buy help as you get older!!!) So the I began my search and interviewing moving companies for our 3 story townhouse move to a local ranch house. I skeptically chose Athens Moving Experts based largely on the feedback everyone else had. Pricing was upfront, and fair. Day of the move a 4 man crew with 2 trucks showed up as promised after a call with the appointed eta. Out stepped 4 guys all smiles and eager to go to work!!! Yoseph , Monte, Z, and Rasan all worked with no breaks and all with happy, pleasant demeanor's. They all got along great and worked absolutely like a team of seasoned vets. All furniture was carefully wrapped and handle with extreme care. No dings, wall damages or even scraping door ways , NOPE!! THESE GUYS ROCKED!!!! If they found any damages on anything or anywhere, they pointed it out to me before touching it. It took a solid non stop 8 hours to load,unload and place items wherever we asked, offering to go above and beyond to relocate anything we asked with no complaints. I even offered to buy lunch and dinner and they kept working through without stopping for either. I highly recommend Athens Moving Experts! Various family members have used them for a few moves within the Raleigh/Durham area, and we're loyal customers! The moving consultant, Matt, replies to inquiries right away, provides an estimate based on your response to the moving inventory sheet, and keeps in touch in the weeks and days leading up to your move. On the day of the move, the movers call you with an ETA, and once they arrive, they begin right away. The team who has moved us has been led the past few times by Yoseph. Yoseph is friendly, professional, and expertly manages the move. The most recent team included James and Ali. They worked diligently and well as a team. They're also very strong. I feel bad: my most recent move was during this horrible heat wave, and they had to carry my stuff down from the third floor, including numerous heavy boxes of books. They did it without complaint. I was amazed at how fast they had everything removed, loaded up, and were on to my destination. Unloading was even faster, due to an elevator building and loading dock on the receiving end. They put down my rugs, constructed my furniture, and placed everything exactly where I wanted it. Not a thing was damaged or scratched. Athens Moving Experts are just that, moving experts. I hired Athens Moving Experts to move the contents of my one bedroom apartment, including cat trees, lots of art, and many, many boxes of books. Three men, Yoseph, Jarel, and Ahmad worked diligently in over 100 degree heat to move everything expeditiously and without breaking a thing! They wrapped my TV and two large, glass-topped tables. All arrived without a scratch! They carefully disassembled my furniture, and reassembled it and ensured it was ideally placed at my new place. They placed all of my area rugs, then the furniture. When they left, all I had to do was unpack boxes. Prior to the move, the consultant I worked with, Matt, obtained my inventory, provided an estimate of the number of movers, time, and cost, and kept in touch in the weeks and days leading up to my move. I changed my inventory slightly, and there was no added cost. The emails he sent me listed all charges, methods of payment, and confirmation of the move day and time. There were no hidden fees, zero surprises. Athens Moving Experts weren't the cheapest nor the most expensive moving companies I contacted, they were very fairly priced. The reasons I chose them? So I recently purchased a fairly large reef tank about 240 gallons which weighs in at about 600 lbs. I called Athens because of their reviews on yelp and am very glad I went with them. The aquarium store told me they would need like 6 or so people to move my tank and the price they wanted to charge to move the empty tank was crazy so I called Athens and was quite skeptical when they said they were going to send 2 guys. They eventually sent three to ease my nerves. Anyway, it was a rainy day today and was thinking today is going to suck for moving but they showed up at the shipping depot as expected and were very attentive. After the tank was loaded into the truck (I went to check on the tank to make sure it arrived in good condition which it did). So they picked it up and reached my house like 2 minutes after I go there and proceeded to carry this beast into my house after preparing all the floors to make sure nothing was scratched. They got it into the house with ease and figured out how to get it up onto a 42" stand. They were very considerate and offered to clean up all the styrofoam that I created by cutting a piece that went under the tank. They really go above and beyond and I am sure they are just as careful and considerate with all their jobs. If you have a large fishtank that needs moving or any job these are your guys. read more

We recently did a renovation and needed the furniture removed from the house to the garage. I called and talked to Zack to set up an appointment. They were recommended to me by my contractor. When Hunan and Mike arrived, I was very extremely impressed with these young men. They came in, evaluated our 20 pieces and then decided how they would proceed. It took them only five minutes before they got to work. I worry a lot but soon realized they really knew what they were doing. "We got this" is a quote they use and how true it is. They also had to bring down a queen mattress and box spring set that I was donating from the second floor. They securely wrapped the furniture in blankets and then plastic to protect them. It took only 2 & 1/4 hours to complete the job. I was happy to see the same gentlemen return 15 days later. They brought it all back into the house, unwrapped everything, and placed it where I wanted it. I was in awe how they moved everything (including a heavy piano) without one bump, scratch or nick in the furniture, the walls or hardwood floors. They are experienced, respectful and strong. We had a scheduled move from NC to NJ and booked our movers 2 months in advance. Started to get the run around about a week before the scheduled pack out of a 3000 sq. ft. home. Called the company again the day before and they told us the scheduled pack out was being delayed a day. We did not have the luxury of time as our house had sold and the final wall thru was already scheduled. My husband called Athens and explained the situation and the stress we were under. They fit us in that very day with a crew of 6 and made it happen! My husband headed straight up to NJ with our dog so he would be in the new house the next day when they arrived. The entire crew busted hump for the entire pack out with respect, compassion and humor as they new I was at my peak. They did an excellent job and were in NJ the next day at my new home to unpack everything and help us make our new house our forever home. My husband was active duty for more than 20 years and we have moved all over the world many times so I know a good move when I see one. This was by far the best, most efficient and drama free move I have ever experienced. I cannot say enough about this company and their employees. I highly recommend Athens. I recently did a move from Durham, NC to Philadelphia with Ibrahim and Freddie from Athens Moving Experts. Ibrahim and Freddie were extremely professional, kind, thorough, and thoughtful in moving all of our objects. They showed up on time for both the load and the unload, and were very clear in all of their communications with us. They spent the time to carefully wrap all of our belongings, and even with the large amount of objects that we have, we found literally zero damage to anything. Multiple friends and family members of ours made comments about how gentle the movers were when moving objects around tight corners, taking care not to damage the object or the walls. They did a great job of dis-assembling our desks/bed frames/TVs, storing all the tiny fasteners in an organized fashion, and meticulously re-assembling the furniture after unloading them at the new house. Most of all, Ibrahim and Freddie were exceptionally nice and pleasant to be around. They were happy to do whatever it was that we asked of them, and performed the entire job with a really positive attitude. Guys let me tell you about my experience yesterday. I would usually wait to post a review, but I want everyone to know how amazing these guys are as soon as possible. Bellhops moving company straight no showed on me on the day I had available and scheduled to move. They kept telling me someone would show soon etc. and then they just cancelled on me 2 hours after they were scheduled to be at my place. They are awful awful awful. I called around and Athens moving Experts had 3 guys at my place within the hour the DAY OF! Guys. This is a company who cares about people. Toma, Darius, and Homam showed up with smiles on their faces ready to help. I could've squeezed them, they were the most friendly and genuine people I have ever worked with. EVER. Usually moving companies I work with have some shady people who try to scam you. These guys are like family. They were so respectful of my things and made sure everything went where I wanted it to. I can't say enough nice things about them. I am planning to use this same crew again very soon, and will make sure all of my friends and family knows about them. Don't look anywhere else. Let me just say that moving is a very stressful time in anyone's life, but the young men (Jalin B., Toma, Jesse, JC, & Phil) that showed up from 'Athens Moving Experts' were amazing and helped ease our stress completely. - They showed up on time and each of them introduced themselves to us. - Once we walked them through the house to show them what needed to be moved, they immediately started working. - They were very organized and worked extremely efficiently. - We basically got out of their way and let them do their thing. - When we offered to assist with something, they thanked us, but said they would take care of it. - At the end, they walked us through to make sure we were completely satisfied with where items had been placed, and then they each thanked us before leaving. We felt very pampered and working with this team of young men eliminated a ton of stress from this move. I used them twice in the past year. The first time in May in which they moved my stuff out of pods into my apartment. It went fast and smoothly. The guys were great and not only moved my stuff in but helped me move stuff around until I liked how it was set up. Unfortunately I don't recall their names but they were really helpful. The 2nd time I used them was more drama. Not because of them but because the pods I got were not big enough to hold my couch let alone all my belongings. The 2 movers, Toma and Zeroy (Z) were very patient as I tried to figure out what to do. The Pod place was closed for Thanksgiving. So I called Athens and they helped me with a plan. They got a truck in an hour, packed up my stuff (Including my couch) and they delivered it from Cary to Haddonfield, NJ. It was very stressful but they made it less so. AND to top it off, my apartment that was I moving into had a small staircase that took a lot of muscle and maneauving to get things in. Again, Toma and Z did not give up. They also cleaned up all the package material and took it with them. I would totally use them again. read more

I didn't know moving could be like this. When four men didn't seem like enough, almost immediately five more arrived. Every thing was wrapped meticulously. The men were exceedingly polite and responsive, even well into the chilly evening. They moved our priceless musical instruments as if they were their own newborns. When it came to unloading, I was reminded of ants that can carry 1000 times their weight! Super attention to detail, down to placing rugs perfectly, just so. On top of this outstanding level of professionalism, they were having fun. They seemed to enjoy each other's company, laughing and smiling the whole two days. Their cheerful vibe decreased my stress levels markedly. It's amazing to me that these guys could wake up the next day and do it all over again! The response was immediate to the few minor dings that occurred. Repairs were made within one day of our reporting them. In my opinion the cost was very fair. We hired Athens Moving Experts to move our daughter to her new apartment. From beginning to end, Athens far exceeded anything we could possibly have wished for in a moving company. They were prompt in responding when I first contacted them and their pricing was very competitive. On move day, another moving company arrived to move out another tenant and we could compare them to Athens. No comparison at all! Our team from Athens was courteous, professional, and very efficient. The other company's movers joked around, drank coffee and didn't even wrap many of the items they moved. My husband made a lot of my daughter's furniture and every piece was carefully wrapped in bubble wrap, then blankets and finally plastic wrap. Everything arrived at her new place in perfect condition. They were efficient at moving everything in, re-assembling any items and put everything in the right place. These guys did an excellent job. They quickly responded to my request for an estimate, and communicated with me about pricing, timing, and process in a way that professional and transparent. On the day of the move they checked in to confirm all details, and in the day if they showed up right in time. We requested partial packing service, and they did a nice job packing, wrapping, and protecting the kitchen items we needed them to pack. They took good care to shrink wrap and cover all of our fragile furniture items. They also took their time In Disassembling a bed frame which could not be lifted out in one piece, and carefully reassembled it at our new place. Pharaoh did an excellent job organizing his team through all of the difficult/heavy lifts, and also in communicating with us at each step. He, Phil, and Daesean were all very friendly, polite, careful and professional. I would definitely recommend these guys for a hassle free, stress free, and successful moving experience. read more

I had to move with very short notice and they were able to accommodate to every need of mine. I was on the 4th floor of an apartment with no elevator and they still go all of the boxes and heavy furniture down the steps and into the truck with ease. I was quoted an hourly price for two movers, but when they arrived they had three guys since one of them was training I was not charged for the extra labor and it was great to see how they train their team members (a lot of positive communication and visual and hands on learning with them!) Mohammad was fantasy and so organized and lead his team to the easiest, smoothest, and FASTEST move I've ever had in my life! As a young female in her 20s, I felt so safe with having three strangers in my home which is rare because if the way that they introduced and presented themselves. They've got a customer for life because the service is impeccable and can't be beat. I wish I could give more than 5 stars!! read more

My mom passed away early in 2022 and I needed a team to get her furniture from her third floor condo to a first floor storage unit. Phil was the lead mover and Jalen was the other mover. Both guys were able to walk me through The process, and even when I got emotional they were able to continue treating her belongings with clingwrap and blankets. I explained the situation to them and both were supportive of anything I needed- even the 200lb mirror she loved so dearly was moved with care. Athens was able to get this move handled on very short notice and were great with communication- however I would suggest giving a ballpark walkthru estimate beforehand, as the price was a bit off of what I had estimated. i also wish I had been asked if i wanted more crew to be there, as it would've been more efficient, especially with the third story up and downs. Pro Tip: have Gatorade for the crew and give cash tips after the move! read more
