I'm very pleased with Athens Services in Redondo Beach. Every time I've called customer service to deal with any bulky item pickup, I've always gotten a professional rep that helps me get it done. I've also asked for special pickups, trash can replacements, etc. Every time, I'm served with no issues. My kids love waiting for the trash truck and waving at them. The drivers and other workers are most friendly and contribute to a positive community. Today, I had an excellent experience with driver Edgar R. and helper Angel. We have had little problem with Athens at our home address, some issues when something is different, i.e. Bulky item pick up, but otherwise unremarkable. My issue cone with trying to get ahold of customer service. I called and was offered the option of saving my place in line but having them call me back rather than sitting on hold. It took them 90 minutes to call back, I missed the call. So I called them back. I was not offered the call back option thus time. 40 minutes later I gave up. How do you run a business when it takes 40-90 minutes just to answer the phone with a human? read more

I have lived in Hermosa Beach for 7 years and have had horrible customer service from Athens Services. Because I live between large apartment buildings that use dumpsters, in the alley behind us, they forget to pick up my trash cans which are on the street in front. It takes 2 days of calling and leaving them out to resolve the issue. They finally figured it out and then we started the organic waste pick up. I was very enthusiastic until the same thing kept happening. If I didn't make 3+ calls (with a lot of time on hold) it would sit in my carport attracting flies. When I had to leave it out a couple of days for pick up then people would throw trash or dog poop in it, which defeats the purpose. So I give up. We are charged for pick up that never happens. DO NOT GET INTO A CONTRACT WITH ATHENS SERVICES. The small print give them all the rights and give you nothing. We were with Athens for over 6 years and always paid on time. then found a service a lot less expensive. Even though we gave them notice of termination, we continued to be invoiced and now have been served in small claims court for over $1,000. Reviewing the contract, we now see that to quit with Athens, "If either party desires to terminate the extension provision of this agreement, [...] at least 90 days prior to the anniversary of the service commencement date and term shall not thereafter be extended and the agreement shall remain in full force and effect for the remainder of the term." THIS IS TOTALLY BOGUS!!! read more

They overcharge, charge you whether you get a pick up or not. And if your bin is a little too full they charge you for that to. Very unfair and to my bad luck they have a contract with my city and I cannot use another provider. If I had another option I would definitely not use Athens read more

We needed to empty out Mom's garage in preparation for selling her house. I thought that one 3 cu yd dumpster would do the trick; it turned out that we needed an extra dump. Other that the cost was a bit more than I was anticipating, the service rep was very helpful on the phone. The delivery was well within the promised timeframe and the service tech helped me move the dumpster to the back of the driveway. The extra "dump" was also expeditiously handled, as was removal the following day. read more

1st time using Athens Services after purchasing our new home we got roll off rental for $457.38. The attached photos display no sign or information list on dumpster the height you can't fill we had no idea as there was no sign and the driver didn't tell us when he dropped the roll off on 10/8/19. Today we learned the one item we had in the dumpster was too tall therefore the driver couldn't take it. Called the 888-336-6100 spoke with Emily informed her we had no clue and there was no sign listed on the dumpster she couldn't do anything about it and said it will be $98 for the driver to come back!! The driver was very nice and professional but also informed me that all their dumpster are supposed to be labeled and this one was not. Even after sharing with Emily no working with the customer to resolve. This will be our last time using the company and will inform our neighbors/neighborhood to use another company. Sometimes when our tenants have not move their cars on time (trash bins behind parking spots) he always will get a hold of me to have them remove their cars asap & take out the trash bins instead of just running away. I have problem dealing with Athens operations Supervisor. I met Manual Ruiz two times. the first time back in September with my complaint on trash bin problem at 938 Arroyo Dr South Pasadena CA 91030. I never heard from him for over a month when I have been emailing him many times without response. I finally called him in October, he told me a letter has been sent. Guess what, the letter was sent to the Apartment where I am not living and of course I did not get it. my email has the right contact address of mine and as of today I did not receive the official letter. I have in October continue email him at rmuiz @ athenservices.com with more questions and get ZERO response. He is not well rated by me. If I could leave less than one star I would. Do not sign a contract with them for commercial service without thoroughly reading it. They have raised the rates twice in little over a year of an increase of 50%. They blame the city, but that is bulls**t. They raise the rates like clockwork (probably software automatically raises the rates) and if you call up to complain they offer to split the rate increase, but then they raise it again shortly afterwards. Read provision #4 of the contract where they lock you into 5 years that automatically renews unless you give them 90 days notice PRIOR to the anniversary date of when you signed the contract. Read provision #3 where they have the right to raise your rate for any of about 8 different reasons, but you can't cancel your contract otherwise you risk violating provision #11. Which states you have to pay six months of service to cancel. So for our company to cancel it would cost us $1495.00 or we have to wait for 10 months in order to get out of the contract. Avoid this crooked company at all cost. I wish someone would have given me a heads up before I ran into this bs. read more

This company has a monopoly in the San Gabriel Valley when it comes to waste disposal. "The Sopranos" of Southern California. They cut lucrative deals with various cities to provide trash disposal, which in turn, you will be forced to pay a mandatory fee to borrow their trash cans. . . . . ... . . PS: Or Else. But, it's cool. They will dispose of everything, even if i does not fit in the trash can. And they are always consistent and on time. read more

Horrible customer service!! I waited on hold for 32 mins for someone to pick up the phone in "bulk pickup" before i hung up. It was 5 mins before some picked up just to transfer me to bulk pickup. Customer service, Angel in particular, was a POOR example and not attentive at all. She couldn't hear what I was saying and I was speaking loudly. What aggravated me most was being spoken to as some ignorant kid is not acceptable. I live in a newly developed community where she couldn't locate my address. However, she was able to locate the neighbors about 20ft away. She refused to help me and give me the runaround. WISH I CAN DO THE SAME AND REFUSE TO USE THIS POOR EXCUSE OF A SERVICE REPRESENTATIVE! Someone needs to go back to Cust. Srvc 101 and learn how to do their job and actually help! Luckily, my city offers an additional contact where I was able to get some TLC. What a world of difference! Just got off the phone with this company. HORRIBLE customer service, which is ironic since they seem to brag on their website about their excellent service. I have owned a house for 4 months and did not set up an account because I had not moved in yet. Now that I've moved in, I called to set up a service and they told me I had to pay for the 4 months that I did not use their service. NO. You do not charge for a service you did not provide. THEN this woman proceeds to tell me that it's a mandatory service and that I MUST pay. NO AGAIN. When I refused, she told me that Athens is the only waste removal service in Altadena. So I have to use them. I have never seen a company be so pushy. If this is how they operate, then it looks like I will need to complain to the city about this. We need more options for waste removal if the service option we have conducts their business this way. Until then DO NOT MOVE TO ALTADENA. it's not worth doing business with these crooks. And to top it all off, of course she hung up on me after she realized I wasn't going to set up an account. read more
