Can't choose another waste disposal service because this is the only one in the area. Have had problems with people dumping trash and Athens always promised to lock the dumpster but never does. In addition there have been many times where they do not pick up the dumpster and claim it is too heavy (same amount of trash as before) or because there is an empty paint bucket in the dumpster they can't take it. If you can find an alternative please do. Their customer service is terrible and basically amounts to telling you that you are out of luck. They've told me several times to offload the entire dumpster then pay extra for pickup when they are supposed to come once a week! Makes no sense. read more

For the last two hours(!!!) one of those red Athens Services dumpster movers has been shuffling containers back and forth on the street outside, going mostly in reverse!!! He has been beeping (beep beep beep beep) out there for nearly 2 hours, arranging about 12 trash containers for 3 complexes! Before Los Angeles forced this company on us, Consolidated Services performed the same job for over 10 years and they were usually done in 25 minutes. Athens Services in Torrance has been one of the best changes in services that we have made. Athens began handling our trash just as the Amazon boxes began arriving in droves. We have had to adjust our pickup schedule several times, arriving at M, W, F. Whenever we have any bulky items from tenant move-outs or the building requires an extra pickup due to rubble from a maintenance repair or an upgrade, the customer service agent sets the schedule in sync with when I can coordinate the team who needs to move the item(s) in question to a location the scout truck is able to access. I'm definitely feed up with getting the run around I'v called over a month ago to get a trash can replaced when I first called I understood there was a delay ok no problem then two week later most of my neighbors get there's replaced but me I call and they say we did replace it well the replaced it to the wrong house and it like there no believing me and give me a serial number and I'm like what you want me to go look for it BS I have like two different claim numbers and nothing has been done and again yesterday 10/18 it was scheduled to be replaced and nothing really do they need me to deliver it myself and I called again today I'm going to have to wait till my next delivery service to see if it happens. I'm starting to see why they're getting such low reviews. I just moved into the area and this is my first time attempting to use their service, let's just say it hasn't been easy at all. We originally scheduled to have our bins dropped off on July 12th, but we ended up moving in earlier. I called and asked if it would be ok if we moved our bin drop off date to the 8th. They told me that would be fine. Well the 8th came and went with no drop off. I contacted customer service and they assured me that they would be delivered on the 9th. Late evening on the 9th I get a call from dispatch stating their driver wouldn't be able to deliver the bins and we'd get them on the 10th. I called again and told them we just moved in and we have trash piling. They promised a July 10th delivery of the bins and also scheduled a pick up of all our trash for the 12th. Well guess what? No bins were delivered on the 10th. We're now sitting here with numerous bags of trash sitting outside our house, festering in this heat. I own a 4 unit rental property in west Los Angeles . The city of Los Angeles awarded Athens services the contract for west Los Angeles trash pickup. Before Athens my monthly bill for a 2 yard dumpster for regular trash picked up once a week cost cost $ 90.00 . I had a choice of any rubbish service i chose NASA . They were great reasonable rates dependable service always picked up the phone. Now that the city of LA forced me to use Athens my cost for weekly service went up to $228.22. The only difference in service is they added two standard blue recycling bins required by LA. The increase in cost is ridiculous but my service which was reliable with NASA has become atrocious with Athens. Athens would skip pickup on a regular basis. Leaving overflowing trash upsetting the tenants. Each time I called to complain I had to wait at least 10 minutes to speak to a human being. Once connected to someone not a recording the attitude of employees was anything but helpful. Please save yourself from the nightmare this horrible company's service. If possible in your service area do not use Athens services. The Absolute worst customer service and attitude I have ever encountered. read more

The positive: their billing dept. Actually has it together. Great customer service and easy process to pay over the phone. the negative: nearly impossible to cancel service and get the bins picked up. I was moving so scheduled pickup for the date of the last trash service. My neighbor informed me the bins weren't picked up. I called this morning and they transferred me multiple times before I finally got to the person who handles trash bin pickups. She informed me that the driver was running late on his route last week so chose not to pick them up. So they now want me to drive over there to bring the bins out. I MOVED and now live an hour away. Wth. Why should I have to drive to re-do this. I held up my end of the agreement and due to laziness they did not. I told her that I could have my neighbor take them out but wuld need to work with her schedule so would need to call her to find out and then call Athens back to let them know what my neighbor said. The lady, Andrea, then proceeded to lecture me on me not wasting their drivers time. Um you are wasting MY time and don't seem to care! And to avoid wasting their time I said I would vsll them back AFTER speaking with the neighbor to confirm the details. What part of calling back does she not understand? Obviously, I dont want to waste the drivers time either. She then proceeds to just keep talking and doesn't understand the concept of those logistics. So I call my neighbor and then call Athens back and ask for Andrea. No one seems to know who that is. I am transfered 3 times each time having to re explain the situation and then lastly end up speaking with someone who thinks I have temporary service which now starts a whole new communication issue. My god how hard is it to end service with these people?! I keep asking to speak with the Andrea who initially helped me since she is aware of the situation. FINNALLY, the lady asks for my address/account # so she can look up the account notes. She then confirms it was Andrea who I was speaking to before. By this point I have spent 15 minutes just trying to get back go Andrea. The lady says that she can help me yet she still thinks I have temporary service. Jesus! So 30 minutes deep in this today and it's still not handled. Should I send them a bill for my time?!. Pretty sure it's the blind leading the blind at this company..... and how big is it that they don't know the names of their employees to properly transfer you? I shouldn't have to be in tnis situation. These were supposed to have been picked up already! If I was running late at a jobi would still be expected to get my job done so I dont understand at all how the driver last week just chose not to pick them up. When people stop setvice it is most likely that theyare MOVING so why do they thnk its acceptable to delay the already agreed upon pickup? update: on hold for another 6 minutes trying to reach Andrea. For business customers, please double check your bills. They changed their billing a few months ago to show how often they are picking up. Previously it just said "service fee". When they changed to show that they are actually charging us for picking up twice a week, we called them because they've only been picking up once a week for years. Now trying to get a refund for years of service and they want proof. We are a very small business that sees everyone who walks on the property. Beware!! We have used Athens for decades and have never had a problem. The get all our trash, put cans back neatly, and their little trucks don't drip oil on the driveway. I called and asked them about it, and they told me "well, your city approved it." Trash pick up is twice a week in my area. EVERY trash day, when I get home from work, there is ALWAYS some trash in the street, or in my driveway, or my lawn etc.... How hard is it to actually dump my small trash cans into their large container on the front of their truck? Not sure how anyone can give this establishment a good review. A couple of weeks ago our trash was not picked up so I contacted Athens to see what happened. According to their records, the collector said our dogs were out so they could not enter the property. Now...if our dogs were out then I understand how this would be an issue BUT we have video cameras that shows the Athens guy come up our driveway and see our dogs barking on the other side of a 6 foot concrete wall of our enclosed patio and then turn back down our driveway. At least Athens had the decency to send someone the following service day to do what the first guy should have done...pick up our trash! But of course the same thing happens the following week and despite numerous 30 minute calls to Athens over three consecutive mornings and speaking to supposed "supervisors" and assurances that the service manager will contact me...one week later our trash has not been picked up! it is absurd that we have to deal with the total incompetence of this company. My first complaint is that if the collector has a problem with barking dogs they don't need to lie about 'the dogs being out" just say "I"m afraid of dogs"!! Interesting that this has not been an issue over the past 5 years until the last two weeks. New driver??? Secondly, really is it too much to actually get a call back from a "manager" to try and rectify the problem??? I am more than willing to try and make it seem safer for the trash collector...I in fact have my husband putting up a "screen" on top of the 6 ft concrete wall so that the Athens guy has the perception of "safety". Over the past three days and speaking to multiple different customer service reps and 2 managers who have assured me that I will get a call back from each of them and the supposed "manager" I have yet to get a call back from anyone nor has our trash been picked up!!! Today was my second horrible experience with Athens in two months. The first problem two months ago was my business was getting a delivery when the trash truck pulled up. As I was asking my delivery driver to move for the trash truck the trash truck left. They pulled into the complex and immediately left. Today was even worse. I saw the truck pulling into the complex via my security cameras and immediately grabbed my trash bags and carried them to the dumpster. The truck was in mid dump so I asked the driver if he could take my trash. He told me to call for a second pickup. I informed him that we have homeless people that dig through the dumpsters so Im not comfortable leaving the trash in there. He told me rules are rules. I asked him what rule? He said "one pickup only" I said yes but the trash can is still on your forks and I already explained my situation. He then told me to call the office and complain. He told me his name Is Carlos and hes the field supervisor. I think its disgusting to say the least to treat customers this way especially when its from a supervisor, but Im not surprised after reading all these bad reviews. Be aware of using top of the driveway service. I signed up for Athens and we have a steep driveway. They have a "top of the driveway" service. The first week our garbage was not collected. After calling, they picked it up but would not answer why or if there was a problem. I rolled the bins to the bottom of the driveway for a month while waiting for an email response to confirm I had this service paid for. After a second email asking about this, they confirmed I paid for the service. I explained I would try again by email. By mid-morning, none of the trash was removed so two of the bins (recycling and trash) were taken to the street. The trash bin was removed, the recycling was not. The green compost bin at the top of the driveway was not removed. I emailed without response. I then went on the chat site and they responded and indicated they would come to remove the trash but once again would not address why this happened or if Athens is able to do top of the driveway service. At last in my experience, it was missed two of two times without Athens responding to at least 5 inquiries as to why this happened (3 emails, two requests on the same chat session). When the bins were at the bottom of the driveway, they always removed the trash as scheduled. Although emails are not answered in a timely fashion, they did respond to the chat session. read more

Usually they are ok, BUT at times (like today) there is a new pickup guy who does not know where to replace the dumpster (it is hauled out from the carport behind our bldg. and left at the street for pickup by a guy in small red truck) and he leaves it where it is blocking a parking space. Always when I call Customer Service (like today) I am told they will notify the Dispatcher - and of course no one comes to move it to the right spot. It's terribly frustrating!!!! read more

Since Athens has taken over our commercial trash collection from Waste Management in our area, not only have our rates gone up but service has been missed repeatedly. In the last three weeks alone, there has been no trash or recycling service. The customer service reps, while friendly, don't seem able to do anything towards resolving the issue and every call to the company is a round of long hold times while the customer rep asks management what to do. Just today I spent 40 minutes on the phone with a rep who couldn't help with crediting the account for the missed pickup. When I asked to speak to a manager, I was put on hold again only to be told that there were no managers available as they were "all assisting other customers with similar issues," according to the rep I had on the line. This is unacceptable and because there is a monopoly in trash collection now, the option to dump an unacceptable service provider and shop around for a company that values its customers is now seemingly impossible.
