Not sure how anyone can give this establishment a good review. A couple of weeks ago our trash was not picked up so I contacted Athens to see what happened. According to their records, the collector said our dogs were out so they could not enter the property. Now...if our dogs were out then I understand how this would be an issue BUT we have video cameras that shows the Athens guy come up our driveway and see our dogs barking on the other side of a 6 foot concrete wall of our enclosed patio and then turn back down our driveway. At least Athens had the decency to send someone the following service day to do what the first guy should have done...pick up our trash! But of course the same thing happens the following week and despite numerous 30 minute calls to Athens over three consecutive mornings and speaking to supposed "supervisors" and assurances that the service manager will contact me...one week later our trash has not been picked up! it is absurd that we have to deal with the total incompetence of this company. My first complaint is that if the collector has a problem with barking dogs they don't need to lie about 'the dogs being out" just say "I"m afraid of dogs"!! Interesting that this has not been an issue over the past 5 years until the last two weeks. New driver??? Secondly, really is it too much to actually get a call back from a "manager" to try and rectify the problem??? I am more than willing to try and make it seem safer for the trash collector...I in fact have my husband putting up a "screen" on top of the 6 ft concrete wall so that the Athens guy has the perception of "safety". Over the past three days and speaking to multiple different customer service reps and 2 managers who have assured me that I will get a call back from each of them and the supposed "manager" I have yet to get a call back from anyone nor has our trash been picked up!!! Today was my second horrible experience with Athens in two months. The first problem two months ago was my business was getting a delivery when the trash truck pulled up. As I was asking my delivery driver to move for the trash truck the trash truck left. They pulled into the complex and immediately left. Today was even worse. I saw the truck pulling into the complex via my security cameras and immediately grabbed my trash bags and carried them to the dumpster. The truck was in mid dump so I asked the driver if he could take my trash. He told me to call for a second pickup. I informed him that we have homeless people that dig through the dumpsters so Im not comfortable leaving the trash in there. He told me rules are rules. I asked him what rule? He said "one pickup only" I said yes but the trash can is still on your forks and I already explained my situation. He then told me to call the office and complain. He told me his name Is Carlos and hes the field supervisor. I think its disgusting to say the least to treat customers this way especially when its from a supervisor, but Im not surprised after reading all these bad reviews. We have Athens Services for our trash and recyclables pickup. Usually they are ok, BUT at times (like today) there is a new pickup guy who does not know where to replace the dumpster (it is hauled out from the carport behind our bldg. and left at the street for pickup by a guy in small red truck) and he leaves it where it is blocking a parking space. Always when I call Customer Service (like today) I am told they will notify the Dispatcher - and of course no one comes to move it to the right spot. It's terribly frustrating!!!! read more

Be aware of using top of the driveway service. I signed up for Athens and we have a steep driveway. They have a "top of the driveway" service. The first week our garbage was not collected. After calling, they picked it up but would not answer why or if there was a problem. I rolled the bins to the bottom of the driveway for a month while waiting for an email response to confirm I had this service paid for. After a second email asking about this, they confirmed I paid for the service. I explained I would try again by email. By mid-morning, none of the trash was removed so two of the bins (recycling and trash) were taken to the street. The trash bin was removed, the recycling was not. The green compost bin at the top of the driveway was not removed. I emailed without response. I then went on the chat site and they responded and indicated they would come to remove the trash but once again would not address why this happened or if Athens is able to do top of the driveway service. At last in my experience, it was missed two of two times without Athens responding to at least 5 inquiries as to why this happened (3 emails, two requests on the same chat session). When the bins were at the bottom of the driveway, they always removed the trash as scheduled. Although emails are not answered in a timely fashion, they did respond to the chat session. read more

Where we live you don't get to choose your trash company, today my daughter called & said they didn't pick up our trash, yes bill is paid in full, I called they said it was in front of a car parked too close to it, now I have done this before they left a note indicating this BUT still took the trash so I took heed to the warning, this time the car was a good distance away from the trash I didn't get a note on it or anything I called to discover this but this time the lazy workers lied, car was a good distance I called no return call, the first time it was my fault I do appreciate the workers that gave me notice but took the trash anyway apparently they had some customer service training, but when you can't choose you are treated anyway because they know you need them.********i was asked by A Paola to update my review **** my trash pick up day is Tuesday, finally after doing nothing wrong & constant calling no return call received from the supervisor today Thursday 2 days later I finally got my trash picked up. read more

This company should be ashamed putting services at the end of Athens!!! What service!!!! We have a 4 unit building with one dumpster and 2 recycling bins. It has been one month- 1. Our dumpster has never been emptied except for one time-when my neighbor had to flag down the truck and demand that they empty the dumpster. Perhaps that is what their meaning of service is- 2. New recycling bins were delivered-the old ones have never been picked up- so now we have 4- 3. As our dumpster is now full, people are placing their trash in the recycling bins - there goes the meaning of recycling !!! 4.I have called customer service 10 Times- today will be 11- customer service listens - writes down the complaint and tells me a supervisor will call- A supervisor has NEVER called back- 5. Since Athens has taken over our commercial trash collection from Waste Management in our area, not only have our rates gone up but service has been missed repeatedly. In the last three weeks alone, there has been no trash or recycling service. The customer service reps, while friendly, don't seem able to do anything towards resolving the issue and every call to the company is a round of long hold times while the customer rep asks management what to do. Just today I spent 40 minutes on the phone with a rep who couldn't help with crediting the account for the missed pickup. When I asked to speak to a manager, I was put on hold again only to be told that there were no managers available as they were "all assisting other customers with similar issues," according to the rep I had on the line. This is unacceptable and because there is a monopoly in trash collection now, the option to dump an unacceptable service provider and shop around for a company that values its customers is now seemingly impossible. Will be calling the Dept. of Sanitation to complain as well as the mayor's office. read more

I have backyard trash service. Raul S. has provided wonderful service. He always goes the extra step for us and he is very neat when he empties our greens, recyclables, and trash. We have the choice of 3 different trash haulers and I wouldn't use anyone but Athens. read more

If I could give zero stars I would! this company is simply the worst. They have not picked up our trash in three weeks now! we have contacted them countless times over the past three weeks (sometimes three or four times in one day) and they promise to send someone over right away, but they NEVER follow through! The piling up of garbage and the overflowing bin has created a health hazard in our building and we are now experiencing a terrible fly infestation as a result! If I gave my customers the service that Athens gives me, I would be out of business. There lucky that the city has given them the license. They must be paying someone off. They have missed picking up my trash 3 times in in the last two months. One time they did not lock my trash bin and someone used it as a bathroom. They are supposed to come to our complex two times a week and often only come one. This leaves our trash piling up and is very unsanitary. Our building smells like trash when this happens and not good for the small children in our building. Last time they only emptied out trash half way after not coming for a week. One of the worst companies to deal with, their driver damages the trash cans one week. The next week he damages the other bin, then proceeds to leave a a note. The note tells me, to call and request a replacement can. Why should I call when he knowingly damages the bins? Well I call and after a 20 minute wait, the phone rep doesn't take my concerns seriously, neither does the supervisor. I'm promised new bins the following week, the week comes and no bins. I call again (this time 35 minutes), phone rep doesn't care, passes me to a supervisor. Still no satisfaction, again promised new bins in 2 weeks. 2 weeks have arrived and no bins, again a disconnected unprofessional rep, now it'll be 3-4 weeks for new bins. Our city, Whittier has thrown their citizens under the bus, with this company. After each phone call I gave the city a call and still no response, this company's must've paid off the city officials to get the contract! Today 10/24/17: For a company that stated there were "NO" trash bins available, I get home from work today and to my amazement, we have 2 new (black & green) & 1 "refurbished" blue bin. Athens trash services are cons and crooks ! I put a negative remark about Athens trash service how after I canceled my services with them they did not want to pick up there trash bin . I canceled my service February 28 . on march 24 after multiple phone calls talking to Wendy she keep try to pro suede me to keep there services and threatened me of charges and fees that I did not acquire. Athens are sending me bills for march April may the bill now is $586.46 for services I never received .after putting a negative remark on yelp .a representative of Athens a manager put a comment on yelp to make it look like there doing something about it .left there number. .that I called a spoke to a manager name Carlos Barajas. he act like he was concerned and said he would look into that and said he would talk to his boss because it wasn't right what his company was doing and said he would call me back he never called me back I called him multiple times and nothing has been done.so I called and spoke to a manger named Melissa and said she said she would look in to it. I told her if she can send me a email showing there are no future charges she said she would have Wendy send me a email showing it is took an care of but so far no luck .I have to keep checking my credit make sure they don't put negative credit for services I did not receive. Im pretty sure they do this to ever body. and some people pay there bill eve n though they did not receive Athens service. Absolutely horrible. I manage a 24 unit apartment building and use Athens. They haven't picked up from my building going on 3 weeks now. I have called everyday to find out what is going on. They keep telling me my case has been escalated and a route supervisor will call me. They've told me this everyday I've called for the last 7 days. No route supervisor has ever called me and my overflowing dumpster and recycling bins remain as such. I noticed several Yelp pages for them that all had one star ratings. This page had one and half stars. I chose to leave this review on this page in hopes that my one star review will knock them down that half star that they don't deserve. I was personal friends with the owners of Royal Trash before they sold it and I was never treated like this from that company. Athens is causing a health hazard and a breeding ground for pests in my building because of their inability to follow a route map. Just disgraceful and pathetic. When I asked to speak to the owner of the company they laughed. I will keep calling and I will keep asking to speak to the owner of the company. I want my trash removed!! read more

Our HOA was assigned Athens as part of the new City garbage program. Athens has missed most of our pick-ups resulting in overflowing garbage into our garage. On multiple occasions, we have tried to contact Athens. We have emailed to have any rep come to the property unsuccessfully. Yesterday, the collector opened the door to our garbage bin and pulled the bin out tearing the metal guards off the door. No one advised the members or association. We discovered it and had to go through security tape to see the incident. If Athens could be given zero stars, they would earn it for the service we have received. read more

I am the HOA Vice President in a 9 unit building in Mar Vista. For the past 3 weeks Athens has not picked up our garbage on the designated days, even after discussion with a supervisor. Even when they promised to come out on an alternate day they have not always come through. This service is terrible. read more

As you may know, Athens was granted a contract with the city of LA to be the only trash collectors in town. Prior to this contract, my 4 unit HOA was paying $111 per month. Yesterday, out of frustration I gave Athens Services a 1 star. Paula A from Athens Services apologized for the service given us since the transition from Recology to Athens Services. I took that response lightly thinking nothing will happen. This morning, I received a call back from Eric, director of Sales for Athens. Eric listened as I related our frustration on not having our trash picked up and how trash had been piling up. He said he read my yelp review and said he will make calls to the right department and will call me back to make sure our trash will be picked up today . Eric said all the trash that were in the enclosure will be picked up. At lunch time, the truck from Athens arrived!!!!! We gave the driver the key to our trash enclosure at the same time warned him that there is a lot of trash in the enclosure. He assured me that trash from the bin and the ones that accumulated in the enclosure will all be picked up. When the driver and his companion left, we have an empty bin and a clean trash enclosure. Eric followed up with a call to make sure the drivers picked up everything that was in the enclosure. I said YES and told Eric we appreciate all the help he did for us today. By 2 p.m., our building engineer reported that the extra bin we requested was also delivered. Thank you Eric, thank you Paula and thank you to the drivers who did not complain when they picked up all the trash in the bin and the trash enclosure. I was not looking forward to calling in to Athens since they missed my green waste pick up last Saturday. After seeing so many bad reviews, I thought it might just be a waste of time. But I called it in on Saturday evening - left my address and explained that my trash was picked up but not my green waste. By Monday I got a call back letting me know they had received my message and that a truck would be by at some point that day to pick up what they missed. The woman I spoke with was very nice and professional and true to what she said, my green waste was picked up a few hours later. I have to say that my trash and green waste is picked up very consistently and my brief interactions with the collection workers have been pleasant. I never thought I'd leave a review for my trash collection company but I thought I should take the time because, minus the mistake of missing my green waste pick up one time, my interactions with the company were very professional and they took care of the problem promptly. read more

No responsibility for their own equipment! The recycling truck shows up, the mechanical arm juts out, takes the blue recycling bin and hoists it into the air only to destroy the bin lid. It stays that way for a few months when all of a sudden they decide to take the bin and never give us a replacement. I called and waited on hold for 20 minutes when someone answers and disconnects the call. Now I have to call again and this time wait 35 minutes to get a lady on the phone who tells me I'll get a replacement bin in two days. A week goes by and you guessed it, no bin! If there was an option for no stars I would give that. First, trash services for the apartment building that I manage changed from NASA to Athens. I normally have trash pick-up 3 times each week. Athens did not pick up my trash AT ALL this week! I called on Thursday, they said someone would be there by 6pm. No one showed up. I called on Friday, they said oh they are on there way (in one sentence) and they are there in the next. I was standing next to the dumpsters and no one showed up. I called today at 11am and the rep (Patty) said that it was escalated and gave me a reference number (this being my 2nd one) and told me that someone would be there between the time I called and 6pm. It is now 5:32pm and no one has showed up..and the likelihood of them showing up with less than 30 minutes left in their day is slim to none. I was lied to multiple times and now I have an apartment building with the smell of garbage running through the building. Lets not mention the gnats that we have to deal with because of this trash..I would NEVER recommend this company to anyone. I will be calling the city on Monday morning to get my trash services switched back to NASA. read more

BEWARE! READ THE CONTRACT BEFORE YOU SIGN IT!!! This companies business practice is unethical! I tried to cancel my account but the way they word their contract is very sneaky and it basically locks you in on an annual auto renew of 1 year before your full contract term begins. I had a 5 year contract with them and I kept their service for the full 5 years but when I tried to cancel after the 5 year term ended, they said that I could only cancel within a small window period (like 60-90 days before the anniversary month of when I originally signed the contract) otherwise I'll have to pay a penalty of 6 months. So when the 60 month window period rolls around again (keep in mind I already fulfilled the 5 year term) and I tried to cancel, they said ok now you have to fulfill the 5 year term from this point on and then the contract will cancel afterwards without any penalties! If I cancel sooner then I would have to pay for the 6 months in damages! read more

These guys are great. I was working late last week when my 70 year old father decided to walk my 5 year old daughter to school. When I went to look for them I watch with a broken heart as cars honked at them while they were stuck in the center divider near Citrus and Cypress in Covina CA. I was stuck in traffic when I saw a man in a black Athens services safety vest get out of his car and helped them cross the street. I went to pick them up and said thank you to the man he smiled and said "no problem its the Athens way". I would like to compliment Athens Services for providing superior service to my residence for several years. From the Customer Service Reps too the Technicians that pick up the Bins every week...exceptional, friendly, helpful. A few months ago, my Blue Recycle Bin tipped over and it was raining, cold, so I didn't go out too pick it up. I couldn't believe my eyes when the Technician who was picking up the Black Garbage Bin, got out of his truck, and quickly picked up my Blue Recycle Bin so it would be upright for the next truck. I was so impressed with the thoughtfulness of the Technician. "You can tell the character of someone by who they are when know one is looking." This mans action spoke to his character and it was impressive. Additionally, every single Customer Service Rep I have spoken too has been outstanding. I can always count on having a positive experience every time I need to interact with Athens Service. Knowing I can count on Athens Services has made life easier for me on several occasions. Athens has amazing service. I have left my can on the sidewalk due to parking issues and the driver will get them from there. I have also received a lowboy dumpster on a Friday and they picked it up Monday when I was done with no inconvenience to my day. The customer service was great when I called had all the answers to my questions about the lowboy. read more

I wish I can give them a Zero star! They have really bad customer service! Most of their representatives are lazy and careless for their customers! I called last year to cancel services at our old house and to transfer services at our New house. They didn't do it. The bill I received at our new house is under someone else's name. We mailed the payment. I called this month Mar.11 to clarify my account and the rep I spoke to said she'll make the changes, her supervisor will review my account and they'll give me a call back. They never called me back. I called today several times and they claim they have No notes from the call I made back on Mar.11. Now they are requesting I email them a Welcome Letter from either Edison or The Gas company stating the start day of our services with them for our New House. And they won't stop services at our old house which we No longer live and my account with this new address is Not active. They are the worst! They just want to take our Money and that's it! No star. Thanks to our politicians we are locked into a 15, yes a 15 year contract. Who in their right mind would of signed that baby. (idiot) yes paid 5,600.00 to have some dirt hauled away that others would of done for $1,280.00. Guess that what contracts are for, certainly not for the consumer. They replaced my broken 90 gallon recycling bin with a sixty gallon one. I've called four times to have the bin replaced to the same size container as I had before and every time they say they will come and replace they do not. Why am I paying so much money for a 90 gallon bin when I am not provided with one. If I am going to see if I can find a way to cancel their service and find another company. I called today 9/26/16 to make a payment and I was on hold for 10 mins. I called back, thinking they forgot there was a call holding. I told the lady that I was in hold for 10 mins and her excuse was the billing dept was having a high volume of calls. She transferred me to the billing dept, only to be on hold another 6 mins before I hung up. I've called during the week to inquire about a bin rental and I've had the same problem. Funny, I received a notice that Athens is raising the rates. You would think that their customer service would be improved by hiring more people. Word to the owners, if you have a high volume of calls, expand your billing dept to handle the calls. After all, we as customers allow you to continue your business.
