I live in Florida and I have bronchial asthma. On a 90+ degree day in a nun outfit - I attempted to walk 6 long blocks. After the 4th block - i was done. I walked slowly to The Athens Theatre where Tim let me in to cool off and catch my breath. The MANAGER of the theatre let me stay in even with sound check!!! Recently, DH and I went to see the sound of music at the Athens Theatre, and we were blown away! Everyone was so very good at everything they did! Especially the orchestra, the nuns and the father! We are so very happy to see the Athens bringing back a lot of the golden era musicals like they used to have in 2017 and 18. The children, and all of the performers as a whole were amazing! I enjoyed it so much that I am bringing my mom today! I really hope that the theatre will be bringing back musicals like "hello Dolly", "The King and I", "Guys and Dolls", "Oklahoma", "Brigadoon", "The Music Man", "Gypsy", "My Fair Lady", and "Fiddler On The Roof" to name a few. We love seeing those musicals and bringing the younger generation to see it live. My niece enjoyed it the last time I brought her and it's different than seeing it on a DVD. The theatre is wonderful since the seats are comfortable and you can see from any seat in the house. Come back to the theatre! read more

It is the perfect little theater to go to. It is clean and close to many shops and restaurants. So for a date night this is great. Plenty of nearby free parking in historic DeLand makes it convenient and a great opportunity to visit other truly local businesses. I love the small town vibes you get and how it's like stepping back in time! A pro tip: if possible purchase tickets in person to save on the high convenience fee (a flat $5 per ticket - which means sometimes as high as almost 23% the ticket price for $22 obstructed view tickets!). Outside of the fee challenge, it's bound to be a great time between the entertainment, atmosphere, and themed concessions that also sometimes include partnerships with local businesses and offer another great way to support the arts while also supporting the community. read more

Beautiful theater a little small for how many people it draws in the Athens cast cannot releasing, but they can act and then there's just one gorgeous girl. She has great taste great outfits so she was definitely the highlight of the visit. read more

This theater is so pretty. Massive points for keeping so much charm and old-world glamor. There is definitely a *smell* in the lobby and women's restroom, but thankfully not in the theater. I do hope that one day they will get seats that are a bit mor comfortable and with better legroom, but I understand the need to pack people in to have a good show. read more

Visiting DeLand from out of state, didn't know this place existed until driving around town. Happened to be opening night for A Christmas Carol musical. They didn't have a lot of seats left, and we didn't know where to sit, so they invited us in to look around (this was in the afternoon when only the box office was open). Picked our seats, came back that night. What a great time. They had carolers outside before the show and fake snow blowing off the rooftop when everyone was leaving. Just magical. I didn't get the name of the lady who showed us inside, but she was so kind in asking us to check it out beforehand. Thanks for a wonderful evening! read more

This place is beautiful!! Just moved to area and went to the Eagles tribute band show. Absolutely loved it! While there we bought tickets for several more shows. The staff is so sweet and friendly. You can see from almost every seat, great prices for a long show and the seats are pretty comfy. I LOVE when old theatres are revitalized!! They've done a beautiful job on this place. They just redid them and the sound is awesome. First time attending Athens Theatre. I was incredibly impressed by the aesthetics, cleanliness, customer service and performance. Daughter loves the theatre and we were able to attend the Matilda Jr performance. Incredible job by students and staff. The stage props and set up were outstanding. Great selection of adult beverages. I would recommend purchasing tickets at the box office instead of online as I believe there is a processing charge. I would also recommend if you are a college student, bring your student ID with you and you get a discount being a student. Overall, great job by the Athens Theatre and we will definitely be back to see another show in the future. read more

Beautiful theater in Downtown Deland. Not very big so just about every seat is good! Great sound and lighting. Nice little concession area offering snacks beer and wine, cokes and water. There is no designated parking lot but there is parking on the right side of the building behind the building for free and also street parking. read more

The Athens theatre is a restored historic theatre .It was once the centerpiece of Deland this is a red brick building of Italian Renaissance architecture .it was built in 1921 and its doors opened in 1922. Due to COVID hours are restricted call for event times and tickets. Parking is easy. read more

I came here to see a dance production of Alice in Wonderland, and it was marvelous. Now, I want to keep visiting, so I am keeping an eye out for future events. This historical theatre was first opened in 1922. It has since been restored. It's a small but very gorgeous venue. Additionally, there's plenty of parking. They sell drinks (alcoholic and non-alcoholic) and snacks, as well. It has a great location. After the show, you can always visit the many restaurants, bars and shops near it. 5 stars! read more

Yes, yes, yes, say yes to say yes. The last time we were here we saw Rocky IV and everybody gave it a standing ovation, a first for any movie I've ever seen and I grew up in a family of avid movie goers. Nevertheless, and all that then, we were here for the production of Little Shop of Horrors and I totally, thoroughly, recommend everyone come see this production. Well done. All the actors. Nice venue. And lots of interesting eats and drinks nearby. DeLand's downtown is very walkable and Well worth the fun. Do it. Do it. Lol read more

Went here with some friends to watch a musical production of Frozen with a local drama summer camp. It was cute and the theater was nice. It's small and quaint but beautiful and well kept. This would definitely be a place I would frequent more if I was a local. :) read more

Great theater. Obviously some productions are going to be better than others; that just comes with the territory of live theater. But overall their productions are great quality for community theater. Plus the theater itself is very pretty, inside and out. Some stand out productions over the years have been Fiddler on the Roof, Les Mis, and Jake's Women. read more

This is a beautifully restored historic theatre. The staff is always friendly and helpful. Restrooms are fresh and clean. Adult beverages are offered at reasonable prices. I've been to a number of productions there, and have enjoyed them immensely. That is, with the exception of the most recent visit. It was my first time in a box seat. The the production was great (Frankie Valli Tribute). I just wish I could have seen the other 75% of the stage. Honestly, the box seats give you a great view of all the other people in attendance, just not so much of the performers on stage. If you doubt me, please visit the theatre and sit for a moment in a box seat, and have a look at the stage. You'll find yourself leaning over the rather dangerously low railing, straining to get a better view. I don't know how they can honestly even offer tickets for these seats. At any rate, I love the venue, and will be returning to see future presentations, just not from a box seat. read more

The Athens Theater has a great vibe and so much character! Seats are comfy and the actors have always been great! Tonight my friend and I went to see ELF THE MUSICAL and it was FANTASTIC!! I wish my vocabulary was better and I could think of a better term! Once again the Athens and their actors delivered and it was a great time and a fabulous show. As an Elf aficionado, this performance was spot on. In particular, Trevor Spence as Buddy the Elf had such incredible energy and he was ASTONISHING as Buddy- He even matched Will Farrell's facial expressions! So -- that is not to say that the rest of the cast weren't great -- EVERYONE delivered! "Jovie", Taylor Whiteman, was awesome and her voice was beautiful. Santa - Ayo Demps--was fabulous as well. I, for one, was also impressed with the performance of "Michael" played by D'montrae Harris as well as "Walter" played by Thomas Muniz (who I've seen previously in "Clue"). Angelyn Rhode was a wonderful "Deb" as well as the other roles she played. BRAVO to the ENTIRE cast of Elf. Thank You so much for a memorable night and a great performance, EVERYONE! Amazing! It's been years since I've seen a play and never have I ever seen one at the Athens Theatre. I am hooked! It's a charming theatre that is somewhat small on the inside but that only means that every seat is "the best seat" in the house! I've heard from others who frequently visit the theatre, that they've never worried about where they'd sit because the stage can be perfectly viewed from anywhere. Of course, there's balcony seating as well...Fancy! The lobby is rather small and the line was so long for the bathrooms, I couldn't sneak a peak. That's probably my only complaint. However, I don't think they should change the building, regardless of how small the lobby is. It's historic and I can't help but feel like I'm living in the 20's when I'm stirred around in the lively crowd. Refreshments are offered in intermission of chips, soda, and wine. They have had more but I couldn't get a good look. Combine your ticket with a dining option and explore some of DeLand's best restaurants or you may add on a wine and cheese plate while you watch the show! Great for Girl's night out! read more

On March 1, 2020, we purchased 2 tickets to see The Kingston Trio at the Athens Theatre for March 16, 2020. On March 13, 2020, the CDC released the following statement that "large events and mass gatherings can contribute to the spread of COVID-19 in the United States via travelers who attend these events and introduce the virus to new communities. Examples of large events and mass gatherings include conferences, festivals, CONCERTS, sporting events, wedding and other types of assemblies. Therefore, CDC in accordance with its guidance for large events and mass gatherings, recommend that for the next 8 weeks, organizers (groups or individuals) cancel or postpone in-person events that consist of 50 people or more throughout the United States." We contacted the Athens Theatre numerous times to find out how to get a refund or when and if they were postponing this concert. The Athens Theatre is 120 years old and holds roughly 500 people. Since the Kingston Trio are an old group, many elderly would be in attendance, we did not feel safe attending this event but the theatre did not do the right thing and refund money or postpone this event. Shame on them for holding on to hard earned money from fixed income patrons!! We are appalled that we were faced with losing our money or breaking the CDC recommendation and jeopardizing our health and the health of others. Upon contacting the box office numerous times the week before the concert, we were always told that the band has the money and they were unable to refund. Upon contacting the Kingston Trio's representative, Kathy Smith, she said that was not the case, that the theatre could cancel this event and return the money should they choose to. We will NEVER attend this theatre or patronize any future events held there. read more

My fiancé and I went to see a Christmas play here recently and were horribly disappointed at the treatment we received. We followed instructions sent to us in an email that we received about an hour prior to arriving for the show. We happily wore our masks in, while at consessions, and while we found our seats. Once we were seated, we took off our masks as the email instructed that vaccinated guests could remove their masks once seated. We were very rudely instructed to put our masks back on by an older female employee. When we calmly explained that we were instructed it was perfectly ok to removed them, she proceeded to argue with us and state that "they are not the best at updating the website" However we received the email with these instructions literally only an hour prior to arrival. I would also like to add that there were other patrons not wearing masks who for some reason were never bothered or asked to put them on. I am also 8 months pregnant and struggle with the feeling of not being able to breath in a mask. We definitely wouldn't have purchased tickets had we known this would be the case and that we would be treated this way. We definitely won't be back. There are plenty of other places to see plays in the area. read more

We recently took our family to the Athens to see The Lion King Jr. It was fantastic! We have been to the Athens for all types of performances from plays to concerts. It is a great venue. Contrary to what the one negative review states, the acoustics are fantastic. The theater is always clean, the ushers and staff are very friendly and helpful, and the building itself is historic and a gem of a place. As others have said as well, couple a visit to The Athens with a visit to one of DeLands fine eateries and you will have a great and memorable evening. We have brought friends there from all over the US and everyone without exception has nothing but good comments about The Athens theater. I highly recommend!! read more

This Theatre is a hidden gem! I just saw their production of Aladin jr. Amazing doesn't even begin to describe my experience. From the first call to order my tickets, I was greeted by a friendly voice that was more than happy to help. After I purchased my tickets, they were very helpful in letting me know where a nice place to eat was. When I arrived to the theatre, my first thought was WOW! It is absolutely gorgeous, and it only gets better when you go inside. This theatre is beautifully restored and still has all the charm from the 20's. The staff and ushers are very helpful and patient and right there to help you if needed. As the show started, you could feel the energy of the audience build. The show was great! From the singing and sound to the special effects, everything was great! The production quality was as close to professional as you can get. This was a delightful night out and I encourage you to go see a show there! You won't regret it! read more
