The Atlantic Inn is located a short uphill hike from town. I mention the hill because the hill is key to its location. In the evenings when the sun goes down tables and chairs are set up on the front lawn, all overlooking the hill. The view is beautiful, quiet, peaceful and very New England preppy-like. I say very New England preppy-like because you'll feel like the person sitting next to you could very well be somebody from the Kennedy clan (of JFK fame). You don't have to book a room to enjoy this Block Island classic. You can easily grab a few drinks at the bar or eat in the wonderful dining room. Everyone is welcome (Although if you're wearing a t-shirt or sandals you probably won't be welcomed. That's understandable because it's not THAT type of place). Although I didn't find their menu overly impressive, what I ordered was both terrific and reasonably priced. The portion sizes were fine and I didn't walk away hungry. The cheese plate and frickles (deep fried pickles) were both top notch. My only qualms with the place is its staff. It's not that they were awful. They weren't. It's just the attitude they carried was that they didn't give a #%@. OK I get that the staff has to put up with tourists every day of the week. I get it. I worked at a ski resort myself for one year and dealt with tourists every day. But that's what I signed up for and that's what they signed up for too. Even though they may not care they should act like they care. Earlier in the day, I had been at the Beach Head and the staff at the Atlantic could learn a thing or two from the crew at the Beach Head. I seriously mean that. The Beach Head staff was falling all over me to made me feel like I was truly welcomed. Overall it's a five star experience (speaking for the restaurant) with one star subtracted for the careless and apathetic wait staff. read more

Love that they handed us blankets as we walked onto the grass as the evenings tend to get chilly. The staff was so super attentive and nice. Beautiful views, starry skies, cold Westheimer brews and perfectly shareable Lobster Sliders made for a wonderful, low key evening. The white kitty that kept us company on the lawn was a bonus but do keep in mind she has a sophisticated palate and prefers her lobster with no mayo. read more

Food was great, but it seemed the restaurant discriminated against us pretty blatantly. Tried to first turn us away and then put our orders behind those of others who came in and ordered well after us. Walked and asked about dinner for 2 on a Saturday evening. The place was not empty but not overly crowded. The host first said it may not be possible if we didn't have a reservation. My wife said we could wait for a table if need be. Then the host said, "well, I have this one table - let me show you". It was a table in the corner. We said it was fine. While we were dining, there was another table across from us that was never occupied, so that seemed weird. Our waiter was very nice and attentive. Appetizers came promptly. Then there was about an hour wait between our appetizers and the second course. There was nothing complicated about our orders - no modifications to what was on the menu. My wife ordered an appetizer and a small plate and two glasses of wine. I ordered an appetizer and an entree. Our waiter apologized and explained that there was a table of eight that just got seated, so that may slow things down a bit. He offered to bring us more bread or anything else while we waited for the entrees, which was a nice gesture. The host was going in and out of the kitchen the entire time. A table of four or seated after we placed our orders and left before we got our entrees. Same thing with a table of two near us. Also of note: on the menu, there was a $20 item listed as "round of drinks for the chef and staff". Seems like a sleazy move to blatantly ask for handouts like that. Our best guess for why the host attempted to turn us away and why we had to wait an hour between our appetizers and our second courses was that the host was assuming we were not wealthy enough compared to other guests. We look about ten years younger than we are. But this seemed completely unnecessary, as the restaurant never filled up while we were there. So I would not recommend coming here unless you look as though you have a lot of money. read more

Excellent chef. Not typical food fare. It seemed to have an Asian flair to it. My husband who's not the most adventurous loved his Waygu steak can Ike's and flavored perfectly. My lobster with a corn succotash was delicious. Mussels to start great flavorful quality. If going around sunset don't be afraid to eat inside if it's cool and windy. There are seats inside with views of the water and sunset. There was a lovely breeze from the porch where we were seated and ceiling fans which weren't really needed. At sunset I noticed the people on the porch had the sun in their eyes. read more

The place is beautiful with a great view of the ocean. I had a great event there but dealing with the owner on the logistics, details for the event and the costs he quoted vs. what he charged us at the end was a disaster. He would change things on us despite having a contract. This may explain why he is trying to sell the inn but without any success. No one wants an outdated place with no air conditioning. The staff on the other hand was great. They went out of their way to make our event special. Good luck with dealing with the owner. The owner cannot be trusted with anything he says! Had a wonderful stay at the Atlantic which has some of the best views on the island. Friendly hotel staff, clean rooms and great location that's walking distance to town. My room was small (as described) but quiet and comfortable, clean and well appointed. Not sure it would be great for a couple as the bathroom was tiny and not a lot of walking room around the bed but it was perfect for me and I'm sure some of the rooms are more spacious. We dined here for my friends birthday, the waitress was very very nice and the seating and views were amazing. But the food and drinks were mid tier at best. I ordered a lemonade and it did not even look or taste like that... practically water. The charcuterie board was disappointing, little to no variety of meats and other delicacies. The veal sliders were absolutely atrocious, to where they needed to be spat out. The chips were soggy, but tasted alright. The mac n cheese bites were the only good thing about that night. We planned our 30th anniversary at The North Light on Block Island. I contacted Brad, owner/operator, at The Atlantic and he walked me through some options for a special dinner (party of ten). Most of the guests are from the San Francisco Bay Area so our expectations on food and service can be high. Brad and our server Ariel made sure the service was outstanding. Unfortunately, I don't know the Chef's name but everyone raved about the food. Everything from the scallops to the stuffed Lobster (house specialty) and the Halibut special were flawless and served on point. minutes ago on  Google Responce to the Manager's comments of my review update: 1. Server did NOT notify us that this dish was spicey even after we requested that the chili be omitted. 2. Management only offered to take the meals off our bill after we complained. Their first response was that we could order another entree but we would be charged for the original as well. 3. Pho is not always "hot" spicey. A competent restaurant menu would indicate the spicey nature. If it is regional, the region should be noted. 4. But aside from the above, we genuinely complained about the food because it was inedible. The manager was rude and accused us of ordering something we knew was spicey. Believe me, I would never order a spicey dish, and the acusitory nature of the manager's response says it all, and now in written form. Thank you for showing your true colors for all to see. An experienced manager of a high end restaurant would apologize and not accuse a patron of malfeasance. Very poor. Customer service horrible. Food prep poor. I'm a long time customer but will now stay far away. 30 yr owner was rude when my husband and I declared our meal was inedible. Halibut Pho is not always spicy. We requested no chili shavings, but broth was very spicy hot. No mention of the broth being spicey in the menu and no mention by the waitress, even when we requested no chili spice. Meal arrived and was too spicy, so we requested a replacement. First the restaurant refused to credit us for the meal so we could order another. Then the owner/manager came out to talk with us and was rude to my daughter. He finally removed the meal and we departed, not having eaten an entre. Its confirmed. After spending another week on Block this year and eating at every restaurant on island (except Eli's), I can honestly say this is hands down, the BEST restaurant on the island. However, diners beware--the menu is not your average american fare. Expect squid ink pasta, whole fried prawn soup, foie gras and a dominican breakfast. My husband and I have to agree, it's the best on the island. Ambiance, delicious food, spectacular service. Every time we have been here, it has exceeded expectations. We both had prix Fixed - thought the portions were smallish, but awesome and in the end was very happy with the amount of food - more would have been too much! Gorgeous and delectable deserts too. We were talking about celebrating a big wedding anniversary here ( 3 years in advance). I've never stayed here, but aside from Winfields, it's the only other restaurant on island that might justify packing heels. That said, with a sundress and flipflops you won't feel out of place. My favorite thing to do here is to watch the sunset on the lawn and get some hors d'oeuvres/tapas with a glass of wine and good company. Though things can quickly get pricy, there are few things more relaxing and luxurious. Sometimes the service on the lawn can be a little patchy, but you're there to lazily pick at peel-and-eat shrimp and sip some bubbly, not to get in and get out. The restaurant itself is about as fancy as you'll find on-island, and the entrees usually live up to expectation. Absolutely worth a visit. read more

This, to us, felt like the quintessential New England restaurant/inn. We went here for a nice romantic dinner our last night in Block Island and it didn't disappoint. We were able to get a reservation with only about 3 hours notice for a Saturday night, which was great since we neglected to plain ahead. The decor is nice, traditional and what I would expect at a fancy-ish bed and breakfast in the area. Although it was really dark when we got there, I could tell immediately how gorgeous the building was and wished we'd gotten there earlier to sit on the Adirondack chairs out on the lawn and enjoy the sunset. Their wine list was outrageous. Seriously, it's own binder with pages and pages and pages. I get easily overwhelmed by wine lists like that, but they had a nice cheat section in the back which described the different kinds of wine and we settled in on a bottle of Pinot Noir. We started off with a bite of pork and some sort of salsa verde, complements of the chef, which was delish. After salads for the both of us, out came the entrees. Portion sizes were small, and my initial thought was "I will eat a cheeseburger after this," but the quality was there so we were left satisfied. I had the vegetarian dish of the night (grilled seitan with rice and a chili sauce), and BF had the chicken and biscuits. I had immediate an immediate case of food envy when I tasted his dish. The rooms are gorgeous, with a very romantic victorian atmosphere, the view is lovely and we admired the sunrise over the ocean from our room every morning.The staff was adorable and provided aloe vera for our unexpected sunburn (we went in September). Unlike Brian, I cannot comment on the hotel portion of this lovely Inn, however, I can wholeheartedly recommend the restaurant at Atlantic Inn. The restaurant is located at the rear of the Inn and is decorated in the standard East Coast Cottage style with plenty of antiques mixed in. The menu is diverse, but with a heavy emphasis on the fresh seafood and locally grown veggies. The drinks are expertly prepared, strong, and brought quickly. A good selection of beer and wines in addition to cocktails. I was here with a party of ten and not a single one of us could complain about what was on our plate. A gold star to the chef for his lovely warm lobster roll. I know, it's hard to mess up a lobster roll, but this roll was different. Whereas most of the other establishments that we frequented prepared lobster rolls with a generous helping of mayo or butter, Atlantic's lobster roll was light, flavorful and served on a crispier roll than one would expect. read more

Our experience here was rather mixed. The restaurant has an extensive list of wines, most of them are mediocre at most and are very pricey for what you get. The restaurant was out of a lot of the menu items. Customers around us complained about it as the selection was very limited. We ordered a number of different dishes, we enjoyed most of them and we loved the bread that was brought to the table. One of the dishes tasted terrible and we sent it back to the kitchen. We were surprised that we were charged for this one dish and asked the waiter to bring it up with the manager. Apparently the manager didn't care enough about ensuring that the customers leave satisfied and refused to take off the charge. Overall service was good, I wish that the waiter wouldn't be so pushy. I always consider this second to The Spring House, but there's really no reason for that. Inventive cocktails and interesting nibbles to be enjoyed in adirondack chairs on their hilltop perch. I have one really special memory here of hanging out w/my friend and her then 2 1/2 year old daughter who was singing and generally enjoying herself. Stayed for two nights next door at The Spring House and wanted to stay one more night. Called The Atlantic and booked the last room. The lawn/porch service late afternoon into evening was incredible; the views, the sunset, the appetizers and drinks! Every person working there was professional and unassuming. Had dinner in the small bar and the wonderful food continued. We wanted to finish our night on the porch and we were very pleased to be offered a blanket! Our room was ok, but it was sold to us a "moderately sized", so we were not surprised. Overall a fantastic stay. A new find for us on BI, we will be back. read more

We came here during our block island experience & really had a nice experience. We had decided to have dinner there but in the future we would've stayed on the porch for apps & dessert; the menu looking amazing. For dinner I had the pre fixe which included two apps, an entree, and dessert. I started with the potato leek soup which was tremendous. The presentation was great with whole cooked hazelnuts in the soup. The second app was the seafood stew which was meh. Sort of bland & more like a soup with a thin broth than a nice stew. My husband started with the mango glazed duck which was on top of a tamale stuffed with some kind of squash, amazing. In his words "it's the best app I've had out here". For the Entree, I had the wagyu flank steak with Brussels sprouts, grilled onions (sort of) and a squash purée. It was very good although the meat was chewy. My husband had the lobster which didn't work. It had so many components on the plate that it all didn't work together. Dessert was had on the porch, watching an amazing sunset. We were even offered blankets if we got cold which was a nice touch. Our dessert was a dark chocolate tart with vanilla ice cream. Very rich but very good. The wait staff was very attentive. Great location a few blocks from the hustle and bustle of Old Harbor, very clean, wonderful staff, gorgeous view, nice continental breakfast included, excellent evening tapas and drinks on the porch and front lawn. You cannot beat this view; being up the hill you have a bit of a walk from the center of town but that makes it a restful place to enjoy. The room was comfortable, very clean, with up to date décor that compliments the Inn. We met people who come to Block Island often and don't stay anywhere else because of how lovely it is. read more

Disappointed tiny room which is fine but went to have a glass of wine on the lawn for my 22 anniversary with my husband and we were told if we did not buy it from the hotel we could not sit there. Really??? After paying over 300 dollars for a tiny dated room which by the way had no water pressure or hot water. Worst part was talking to the front office about how rude the waitress was telling us to leave our seat. All three back office staff members basically rolled their eyes at me like I was a problem. Will not stay with you again and will make sure my friends don't as well. This could had been handled with grace instead you made us feel like criminals for enjoying one glass of wine on the porch where god help us all we pay enough for. read more

A lovely setting on top of a hill overlooking the old Harbor. The service is excellent in all phases, and everyone is warm and welcoming. The tapas menu is suberb, and enjoying it while seated on the front lawn in front of an incredible view of sky and Harbor is incredible, and worth the extra cost of staying here. The dinner menu is good, and the hotel just started a vegetarian menu that we sampled; the dinner was excellent. The rooms are small but very clean, and the wifi is very spotty. Great meal and great service. My husband had the pheasant, and as other raters said it was quite good. The risotto, pesto-like sauce, gentle smoky flavor of the vegetables and the combination of flavors were good. He ate every last bite. But the reason for my posting isn't the pheasant. I had the scallops which were remarkable. I'm a good cook and don't usually enjoy eating out. But they got me on this one. Imagine this if you will .... Delicately placed triangle homemade pasta with burrata cheese filling at the base, layered with a few freshly stewed just right tomatoes, a dash of lemon. Added on top a layer of seasonal yellow squash (variety?) and a few halves of grilled to perfection brussel sprouts. On top we're 5 large scallops that were seared, browned, cooked to perfection. A tiny dollop of a sauce that was creamy white on each scallop. Added to the dish was a teaspoon of black caviar and fresh pea shoots for color and flavor. It was beautifully presented. The pasta made the meal complete and satisfying so you won't walk away hungry. The view from their porch is awesome too. read more

Was looking forward to having a delightful dinner with college friends while on a weekend escape, as we had with every other dining establishments this weekend. First, I will start with a positive: our waitress was very nice, attentive and helpful, and listening to the other wait staff it sounded like they were equally kind and knowledgeable. The appetizers were interesting and inventive and were not bad. We ordered the focaccia basket, the mezze platter and the pheasant dumplings. The meals came shortly after the appetizers were cleared. My dining companions ordered the pork chop and the pheasant, which they enjoyed as they had been seasoned well and cooked appropriately. I had ordered the Wagyu steak, which was ordered medium rare but came out not only over cooked but unseasoned and had an off putting texture and flavor, I can describe it as a wet (but not juicy), rubbery piece of meat with faint aftertaste of plastic. I can only assume what could have been the issue as the manager did not take a moment to discuss with me as a caring, professional in the hospitality business should. He asked how everything was, and as I thought they would care to know the preparation was off, I politely told him the steak was over cooked and had no flavor and odd taste. He grabbed the plate, looked at it, abruptly turned and walked away while, angrily stating "That is medium rare". I was surprised by this but assumed he was taking responsibility and walking back to kitchen to talk to kitchen staff and make things right either with a new plate or come back to apologize and explain the issue. Neither happened. I was never offered another meal in its place. In fact, although he came back to our dining area in more than one occasion he did not even give our table a glance. This could have been a learning and teachable moment, figuring out what had caused the issue and what should be done in future to avoid this from happening again, unfortunately it appears this "manager/owner" chose to be unprofessional and take no responsibility. Sad, as it is a beautiful location and the wait staff were pleasant. I would not recommend this place to anyone, as there are many other nearby dining establishments with excellent food, drink and servers and management who understand what "hospitality" truly means. read more

The Atlantic Inn has some of the best dishes on the island. It may be a little pricey and the portions are somewhat small, but everything I had for my meal was delicious and quite impressive. My family and I went on a Saturday night around 730 and the place was just starting to get crowed. We had reservations and were given a seat by the window with an amazing view of the ocean. The wine list was very extensive and the server offered great recommendations. The menu was also not your standard American flair, as it was infused with a lot of exotic ingredients. My sister had squid ink pasta with her salmon. I had foie gras stuffed chicken. My father had thai mussels and my mother's steak was served over a bed of pasta. Everything about this meal (and this place) was great. I would highly recommend it to anyone visiting Block Island. read more

We went to the Atlantic Inn for a nice dinner during our first weekend on BI, and it was great. We only wish we had arrived earlier, to enjoy a drink on the lawn before starting our meal. The appetizers were delicious, the entrees divine (apple-thyme chicken sausage and rabbit carbonara) and the dessert was pretty good, too. We had our dessert and after-dinner drinks on the porch, which seemed like a good idea, but I think our waitress (who seemed somewhat new to the job) might have forgotten about us out there.
