Valentine's Day stay and Emily was very helpful. We called before we arrived and she sent us a list of restaurants that were open. This way we could make reservations for dinner,etc. She checked us in and made sure we had everything we needed. This is off season and she was by herself. I have to say she handled it very well. We had family on the trip with us who joined us for drinks and she attended to all of us and the other quests. She was the attending to the front desk, bartender, etc. She did not miss a beat. Impressive! We were on the island in Sept. My friends stayed here and loved it. I come often and have had brunch here, but this is the first time we've stayed. The room was spacious. My 10yr old loved her pull out bed. She asked us to stay longer she had so much fun. Our room was the Tosh. The view is great, they have cheese and wine in the evenings and like I said I've had their brunch, it's great. Emily checked us out and I asked if she would be there in Aug/Sept. Told her wood call her to book and I look forward to seeing her. She was amazing!! I also have to give Rita a shout out. I met her in Sept and she was such a gem to my friends who were staying there. recently stayed at 1661 with my mom and we had an amazing trip. the resort is clean, staff is very friendly, and rooms are cozy. very conveniently located too. we loved the complimentary happy hour each day and appreciated the complimentary champagne at breakfast too! they have a garden across the street, be sure to check it out because the veggies are so fresh and delicious! i also appreciated the fact that they had a coffee machine in the lobby with some treats/muffins that was available 24/7. water too, so we could refill our bottles at any time of the day or night. can't wait to come back! read more

We stayed here in November. The Inn does provide pick-up and drop-off from the ferry, but we walked as it's quite close. At check-in, the Inn staff provided us with a list of what was open and happenings on the island. They showed us to our room and helped carry some luggage. Our room fit all of us with the twin pullout couch being wider than expected and comfy. For the off-season, there was a wine and cheese hour from 4-5 and the breakfast in the morning was ample (eggs, coffee, mimosas, bagels, fruit, cereal, yogurt). It's an older Inn so there's some struggle with doors and some creaking but it was so peaceful. The staff was super friendly and helpful - we told them the lighthouse we were heading too and they told us where we may find seals. read more

The accommodations are spacious clean and unique and the breakfast and afternoon wine and cheese are always quite good. I highly recommend a stay at any of the 1661 property's. We have enjoyed accommodations at the Main House, the Dodge Cottage, the Hendrickson House and the Mitchell Cottage, all were an excellent experience. We have stayed at the 1661 many times over the last couple of decades. The accommodations are very good and the staff is friendly and helpful. The wine & nibble hour from 4-5pm every night includes a nice variety of wines, cheese, fresh vege from the Inn's garden ( radish, string beans, cucumber, cherry tomatoes etc.). It's a relaxing way to cap off a busy day or enjoy a drink before dinner. The breakfast buffet is outstanding. Once again, you will find just picked vegetables and salad greens from the garden, salmon, eggs, potatoes, and a variety of baked goods. Mimosas are also available. The view from the patio is wonderful and a relaxing place to make plans for the day. My only concern is related to the Manager. Every morning she makes the rounds chatting with guests and offering edible flowers from the garden. She seems very selective about which guests she talks to . Stopped by this inn to see if is someplace I want to stay when I return with my boyfriend in September, so my review is strictly the grounds, desk clerk, and bar setup as we got wine and sat out on the deck. Awesome curb appeal and grounds, friendly desk clerk, and beautiful views out back. The wine by the glass selection was horrid, though, which doesn't align with the ambiance. Glen Ellen and Frontera, really? It's like you gave up right at the end and cut a major corner. Stayed at the Hendrikson House with a group of friends for a wedding recently and the accommodations were pretty good. I had called about a month in advance asking for early check in as the wedding started at 2, check in was at 3 and we were traveling from out of town and really wanted to get into our place early to get ready. We showed up at the 1661 Inn and luckily one of our apartments was ready, the other one we would have to wait for until later in the day. The woman in charge was incredibly unaccommodating. She treated our group like we were a bunch of irresponsible teenagers and we are all 33 years old and over. We had asked for keys to the apartment that wasn't cleaned and ready yet so that we wouldn't have to take a cab back to the inn to get the keys when it was ready as we were already crunched for time to get ready for the wedding. Every question we asked her was a no and it seemed like she took pleasure out of saying no. It was frustrating but we took the keys to the apartment ready for us and took their cab service to our apartment. The guy driving us was great, he helped load our luggage into the car and helped walk our things up the stairs to our apartment. The Hendrikson House was nice, no frills, absolutely nothing in the apartment so plan to bring your own everything. The place was clean which was all we really wanted. One of the apartments had a beautiful balcony that was great to spend time on and it happened to be directly across from the church where wedding was. 10/10 for location, walking distance to everything. Beds were comfy enough but unfortunately no floor length mirrors anywhere. Check out time was at 11 and that was not flexible. We asked for an hour extension and the same woman said absolutely not. Shocker. Luckily we were able to check out and drop our luggage off at the Inn. The only problem with this was that they stored our luggage on their back porch completely unattended. I was surprised they didn't have a locked storage area for guests. Anyone could have walked in and taken our things throughout the day. That didn't happen, but we didn't feel great about leaving our things out in the open. Overall I would recommend this place to people traveling to the area. Just don't expect favors and enjoy the location because it was truly in the perfect spot. read more

Gracious, welcoming, beautiful, comfortable. The 1661 couldn't have been better. Our room faced the ocean. We had a deck to lounge on, so we watched the stars and listened to the sea. I can't leave out the bathroom which was updated, large and scrubbed clean with a spa tub. Breakfast buffet with a fresh fish- yummy. And, Rita herself comes around with fresh delights from the hotel's large garden. Need I say more? Oh, yes, it's only a short walk to town. read more

We are just wrapping up a peaceful December winter weekend here on Block Island. We wanted to have a quiet weekend away, almost off the grid feel. We found it here on this island...a few restaurants open and a grocery store. We just enjoyed hiking in nature and romantic walks through the quiet town. When we were just wanting to relax we found the perfect place for our getaway...The 1661 Inn. If we could give more stars we would. The room was perfection...fireplace, huge and comfortable bed and the bathroom twin- showers were incredible. Every morning they had a great continental breakfast and wine/cheese in the late afternooon. The young man at the front desk in the evening was very kind and chatted with us each evening. Rita, the owner was amazingly gracious even offering us the Inn's car to drive around the island on a rainy morning; letting us hangout in the Inn a bit longer while we waited for the ferry. Logan, was a smiling face we saw each day and again, her hospitality and warm personality made us feel at home. She even drove us around town to find a nice place near the ferry to wait for it to arrive. We will be back to Block Island and we will most definitely stay at 1661 again! Beware of Inn 1661 on Block Island, RI. We booked three nights for our 56th wedding anniversary, $3000+. The Inn recommended we take the New London Ferry. On the morning of departure, due to the remnants of a hurricane, the ferry canceled. We called the inn which suggested we take the Port Judith ferry, which is at least one extra hour of car travel. I talked to the owner who refused to give us a refund, a partial refund, or even alternative future dates. Nothing. Nada. She said they sent us their cancellation policy which they did, buried in a message to confirm our reservation. I never read their long message, just reconfirmed we were coming. 1661 kept our money and kept the various state taxes and fees. Employees do what the boss does, and this boss is unethical. We've been around the world and have stayed in the best hotels and resorts in our world. We've had infrequent issues which 100% of the time were settled fairly. I have stayed in the 1661 Inn Guest House for the past two summers. It is a beautiful old inn with very friendly staff. The guest house is directly next to the main inn and has a few small rooms with a shared bathroom. It's perfect for what we were looking for. Reasonable prices, excellent location and stunning views. The guest house has a patio overlooking the water. It is just lovely. Breakfast at the 1661 Inn is included and served every morning 8:00-10:30. It is one of the best hotel breakfasts I've ever had. Did I mention they serve champagne!? Also the corned beef hash is something I thought about all year and couldn't wait to taste again. It really is that good. You will not be hungry for lunch until at least 2 pm! The hotel is also a very quick, easy walk to Old Harbor which is great and convenient. We love staying at the 1661 Inn! read more

What a wonderful place. We stayed 3 days and 2 nights in the Adrian room of the Mitchell cottage. We were blown away. Amazing features: *king size bed that faces the ocean *massive bathroom with jet tub *fire place *pull out sofa for extra guests *large deck with wall of doors that slide open *amazing view of the ocean *air conditioning!! The breakfast each morning is included with your room and was so great! The staff was wonderful and the hotel was walking distance to just about everything on that side of the island(depending on how far you're willing to walk). We will for sure be back! read more

We went the last weekend of October and have only good things to say about the 1661 inn. We stayed in the guest house Sprague room. It has everything that you need clean room good bed, nice bathroom. Great view from our padio.. They do "nibbles" from 4 to 5 which is a inclusive wine and cheese happy hour/meet and greet, great idea! The 1661 Inn is in walking distance to several restaurants, as well as a great beach.. The staff was awesome at the inn, very helpful and attentive. In the morning they do a full out breakfast buffet with mimosas.. We will be coming back again in the off season again it was very peaceful.. You can also fly out of Westerly to Block Island, I highly recommend doing that as well. read more

I have nothing but praise for this Inn! We went with another couple for a weekend. From the moment you walk in your made to feel like your special! Your asked if you want coffee or tea and cookies!they show you your room. We stayed in the guest house which was small but cozy and well decorated! With a nice newly updated bath! Happy hour of wine with cheese and crackers and salsa with corn chips was fabulous! They have an open kitchen that you can go in and help your self to coffee and tea! The breakfast buffet was large and the eggs are cooked to order! The view from our room was just fantastic! We got up and watched the sunrise! I highly recommend this Inn. My only complaint about this wonderful inn is that we had to leave. The setting is beyond picturesque. The service is first rate. The guest rooms are lovely. The breakfast buffet is equal parts delicious and elegant. We just loved the grounds. Every evening, they look offer complimentary wine and snacks which we enjoyed on the deck as we looked out over the lush lawn and the ocean beyond. A great way to unwind after a day of world-class relaxation! 1661 Inn is about a five minute walk from the ferry dock in Old Harbor. So it's very close to a variety of shops, restaurants, and bike/moped rental places. We stayed there during the second week of September when the island quiets down and the weather is spectacular. I can't imagine a nicer, more relaxing way to enjoy Block Island. read more

There is no grace in this world anymore. Just punishment for every small mistake you make. Had a reservation for a grand total of 10 hours before being told by someone we had an unexpected conflict that week. So would that cancellation fee possibly be waived in light of the short time we had it reserved? Of course not. So 1661 inn gets a couple hundred bucks and now we will NEVER go there for an actual stay. Yes it's policy and I will suffer the consequences. So be it. But this is the reason small businesses go under with rigid policies and also why everyone hates dealing with companies at all. read more

Buffet brunch with bottomless mimosas for $21! This is pure craziness for block island and a place with such an incredible view of the water. Most patrons that will be getting breakfast here are guests of the hotel. It don't let that stop you. The buffet is a touch limited usually offering a smoked whole fish, eggs, sausage, bacon, pancakes, bread selection, and muffins. This was the second time I have visited the restaurant. We primarily came to enjoy the bottomless brunch and take a much needed break from being aboard out boat. Bottomless champagne or mimosas are self serve so you can get into a really great place very quickly. The servers will also bring you any coffee or tea you need to to table. The opulent environment is perfect for a lazy summers morning. After you finish your breakfast my favorite this to do is go down to one of the lawn chairs and catch a quick nap. No pressure to leave your table by any of the staff as it didn't seem to ever get overly busy. If you are visiting the block be sure to swing by. read more

Read the cancellation policy and read it again, especially this part: "If you are cancelling within two weeks of arrival, your reservation is non-changeable and your deposit is non-refundable. However, if we can re-book your stay to someone else, you will receive a gift certificate (less 10% cancellation fee) for any portion above your deposit amount that we are able to re-rent." That was my mistake, more of a fast glance than a thorough analysis (caveat emptor!). Traveling during a pandemic, with a rise in breakthrough infections of vaccinated people is not an ideal time to vacation, but we wanted one night away for our wedding anniversary, so we booked a night. Low and behold, our two-year old picks up COVID at daycare eight days prior to our stay. I reached out and was informed, "everyone with a last minute cancellation has a compelling reason." As a customer, this is a little different than a death in the family or a broken leg. If I decided to go and broke quarantine, we could be fined by the R.I. Department of Health for violating a quarantine order up to $250 since we would be in public for two days, but according to 1661, COVID is equally as compelling as any other reason for cancelling. It is the customer's responsibility to have a basic understanding of the policies, I get that and I understand business needs to business, but in such an extraordinary circumstance as a (hopefully) once in a generation pandemic, you would expect a little more decency. read more

The staff is so welcoming and friendly and always there to offer help with local hot spots and restaurants. I loved it so much I'm going back next month. A great place to stay on Block Island. A quarter mile walk from the ferry terminal, out to the left, up Spring Street and past the Manisses Hotel. A quaint inn with 9 good sized rooms, private baths and a great deck/patio overlooking the ocean. It's exactly what you should expect from a small, seaside New England inn. Not dumpy, not W Hotel trendy, not a Ritz Carlton...just right. From the second we walked into the place, the staff couldn't have been nicer. Very warm, friendly, accommodating and always helpful with suggestions. Check in was nice and quick and our room happened to be ready earlier due to an early check out. The Deering room was perfect and right off the lobby on the first floor. It has a king sized bed, pull out sofa, small refrigerator, TV (we didn't turn it on), WI-FI and a decent private deck with lounge chairs, small table and sweeping ocean views. There was a cocktail reception each night with red & white wine, plus cheeses, chips/salsa, fruits. A nice touch to get people gathering together. We took full advantage of the unseasonably warm October weather and sat on the patio overlooking the ocean. We attempted to engage in conversation with other guests, but many (older people) didn't want to be bothered with us. We did meet a nice couple from Binghamton, NY that was very nice. Each morning started off with a breakfast buffet just off the lobby. There is indoor and outdoor seating. You are offered coffee/tea upon arrival and allowed to choose whichever table you like. Plenty of juices and champagne are available at no charge. The buffet had eggs, hash, potatoes, muffins, toasts, cereal, baked beans, pancakes, french toast, etc. They even offer a fresh cooked omelette to order if you prefer. You don't start your day hungry! You are a short walk to the main area of town with several restaurants, shops, bars, a liquor store and grocery. You don't need a car, but if you plan to explore the (small) island, it helps. The ferry takes automobiles over for an additional charge of $39.40 one way on top of your ticket. When you factor in $10 per day parking in Point Judith, it's usually worth it. Plus, if you want to rent a bike or moped, the rates are astronomical for either. The rental places wanted $40 per day for a bike and $125 per day for a moped. Do the math, it's cheaper to bring your car. Overall a perfect three days on Block Island. I've been coming here since I was a kid and never had a better stay. read more

I beg you do not eat here please. I am serious it is so bad. They won't take your order unless you go ask the hostess to send a waiter over a few times. Then let's just say it's a good day and you can order. I got 2 eggs over easy and my brother got the same so the waiter goes, 'okay 4 eggs over easy?' And he comes back with 4 eggs over easy on one little plate. Weird but whatever. But the problem is that the egg whites were raw, so after waiting for 20 minutes for the waiter to come back, we asked another waiter to redo the eggs so they were actually over easy. When the eggs came back there were 4 scrambled egg whites and 3 yolks sitting on top. HIGHLY DECEPTIVE. Stayed here for 3 nights recently, and there is an enormous distinction between staying in the main 1661 hotel and the associated cottages. We were in Dodge cottage, which was certainly nothing like all the pictures we were shown, and was a bit of a hike from the hotel. For $400 a night, getting a view of a junkyard, no AC with only loud, old fans, and living directly above the service workers who are up making noise at 6am was not worth it. The breakfast was one of the few bright sides, and the actual hotel was nice, but it is very misleading to advertise that and instead have people stay in small, old cottages down the road a half mile. This place is Block Island's best kept secret. You can attend this hotel's breakfast/brunch any day of the week for $21.95. Weekdays the breakfast is between 8-10:30am and it extends until 11:30am on weekends. They have a nice spread of breakfast foods, my favorite of which is their homemade breads and muffins. Their pistachio muffin is to die for! It isn't a wide array of items, only necessary breakfast foods, but I can't complain for the price. The eggs and omlets are fresh. During this visit there was also sausages, potatoes, cereals, toasts and fruit. The real icing on the cake is the unlimited mimosas and champagne. 2-3 flutes in and you feel like the sailboats you're watching in the block island sound. The view is one of the best. The hotel is situated atop a hill giving guests sweeping views of the sound and New Harbor the the left. Brunch guests can sit on the covered deck or at tables on the patio. BI's cool breeze will keep you comfortable. read more

My husband and I stayed at the 1661 inn 9/28/16-10/2/16. We had planned to only stay two nights, but the weather took a very bad turn for the worst and the ferries were canceled 9/29-10/1. During that time, I was 13weeks pregnant and caught a stomach bug that was going around the island (the medical center was very accommodating!). I'm writing this review because the treatment we received by the owner of this inn was impeccable. They knew about my bug and pregnancy and were incredibly flexible and helpful. They let my husband do laundry since we had only packed for two days; they let us heat up water for tea even when the kitchen was closed; they brought extra liquids to help me hydrate (juice, tea, water, etc.), and they heated up soup for me that I had bought at the supermarket during their busy dinnertime. The inn owner is a real sweetheart and her nurturing way really helped me at a time I was very nervous about my health and it's affect on the baby. She was reassuring and professional each step of the way. They provided a discount on the nights we were stuck on the island and kept us incredibly informed of the ferry situation. The food at this inn is very good and many people who are not staying there do come over to eat there because of it's reputation. I wouldn't recommend a trip to Block Island during the off season, mid-week, during terrible weather - but if you are going to get stuck in a boring situation with a medical illness - you can't beat the service at this inn and the attitude they had around making sure we were comfortable. I wish I could rate this place higher than 5 stars. In the past I'd stayed at Dodge cottage, which was nice, but kind of small & no water view. This trip, I booked a room at the Dodge cottage (owned by 1661) again. I was booked for 2 nights. The Friday ferry was cancelled due to high winds. The hotel called me at 8am on Friday to let me know. I booked for the next morning at 6:30 am. When we arrived at 8, breakfast was going, they told us to eat. Normally you can't check in till afternoon. The owner gave us a tour of the Inn & all the rooms that are being renovated. She then offered us an upgrade to the Guesthouse for the same price as Dodge. The room is beautiful & has gorgeous water views. Breakfast is included & is amazing! The newly renovated rooms are so beautiful. I can't wait to stay in one next year. We decided to stay an extra night, they let us stay in the guesthouse at the same rate. Great people. So accommodating & pleasant. read more
