Wow! What a hidden gem! Location: This salon is just off of H Street and very close to my house, so I had to give it a try. The interior is very clean and sleek. It really feels like a treat! Booking: I booked online the night before (probably around 7pm for a 10am next day appointment). The online booking system was easy to use and the salon had three stylists to pick from. Arrival: You're offered a tea or french press coffee. There's no standard check in desk so everything feels very open and causal. Stylist: I had Stephanie - what a treat! Such a nice person and wanted to listen to me before doing anything. Once I got to the salon, she sat down in the chair next to me and asked me about my hair, how I usually style it, what concerns I have, and what products I use. She told me exactly what she was going to do and made me feel very comfortable. Shampoo: Stephanie shampooed my hair which was great, she did a wonderful job. They use only Aveda products, so everything smells wonderful! She did a hot towel conditioner treatment for free which was also great for my dry hair. Cut: My cut was phenomenal. I've literally (not hyperbole) never had such a good haircut. My last three cuts have been so bad (Stephanie explained why the cuts I'd had in the past didn't work for my hair which was helpful to understand). Blowout: Also amazing. Would totally come back just for the blowout. Products: I use Aveda products already, but Stephanie walked me through what I could add to my routine to make it even better. She didn't try to sell me, I asked for products. She even cautioned me away from buying something that I thought might help my dry hair but she knew wouldn't work for me. Price: I paid $80 for a women's haircut which is pretty standard for DC. Overall - this is a hidden gem for Capitol Hill/H Street folks that you cannot overlook. Thomas was wonderful and the whole team is great! They were SO THOROUGH in making sure that my hair was perfect. Really took their time to understand what I wanted, shared pictures with me, had great ideas, and even brought in colleagues for second opinions. Very clear that all the stylists are really passionate about what they do and do it well. Was very careful with making sure that folks coming in were disinfected and wearing clean masks. Like all the other reviews say, Stephanie was awesome. I HATE getting my hair cut. Stephanie listened to what I was looking for. My descriptions were a bit all over the place. She showed me a pic of what she was going to do and she executed it beautifully. I was out of there in less than hour. The salon is super minimal but chic. Everyone was really nice. I'm super picky when it comes to finding a salon, because I don't want to pay mega bucks for an uninspiring experience. I took my sweet time finding Atlas, but I'm so, so happy I did. I relocated to D.C. from Minneapolis last year and had loved my Aveda concepts salon in MN. After reading the five-star reviews on Yelp, I took the plunge. I can honestly say that my experience this morning was the best time I've ever had at a salon. The space is open and inviting with tons of natural light. I was offered water, tea, or coffee, and when I chose to start the day with some java, was treated to an individually-sized french press with rich cream--and chocolate to boot! Mark and I bonded over shared life experiences while he worked his magic on my hair via partial highlights and a haircut. I'd explained that my biggest issue with previous salons I'd tried out in D.C. was that the stylists seemed harried and didn't listen to me. Mark really listened to what I wanted, took his time, and the end result speaks for itself. Is the salon expensive? Not more so than other salons in the D.C. area, and especially not for the royal treatment and welcoming vibe. Oh--and did I mention that the cutest chihuahua ever (Boo) has the run of the place and will sit on your lap for pets? Bonus! I will definitely be back. read more

I have been coloring my hair since the end of the last century, and decided to grow out my natural color during the pandemic. After 15 months , there were still a couple of inches of blonde in it, so I needed to get my hair cut short to finish things off. I made my first visit to Atlas for this momentous chop, and got an appointment with Jen. Well, all I can say is, it was the first time in my life that I looked into the mirror after a cut and thought, "DAMN! My hair could be in a magazine!" She's amazing to work with, and really takes the time to talk to me before the cut to understand the style I want, asks questions about my reference photos, and gives great advice on the styling and products I should use for my hair type. For my last haircut I was nervous about going for a big "chop", so I especially appreciated her thoughtful consultation. She even stopped a few times throughout the process to ask me how I was feeling about the length/layers, and encouraged me to play around with my hair to see how it felt - I thought this was above and beyond. Thanks to Claire and her team for today's awesome service. Seeing some good reviews and evidence of long-term clients on Yelp, I scheduled a complimentary 15-min consultation to talk about what I was hoping to doing with my hair, what has worked and what hasn't worked in the past, what my level of regular maintenance is, etc., with no commitment to "start" a service. This consult time gave me a calm space to talk about options, how much time it would take, and how much money it would cost, with no pressure. In other salons, I have felt like I have to speak "hair" to explain exactly what I want, which is like a foreign language to me, and I feel a lot of pressure in the moment and rarely walk out 100% pleased. Not so at Atlas. I was lucky to quickly find an open time slot, and had an excellent experience during the color, cut and style. The hand and scalp massage (YES!) were awesome, the balayage Claire did is beautiful and has the natural look I have been trying to get for years, and the service overall was fantastic. The staff that welcomed me were so friendly and fun, and the vibe of the place was very positive and cool.
