There's plenty of paid street parking, and I scheduled my appointment through schedulecity. The salon is a bit small and there were others getting a cut when I arrived. I had my cut with Justin, and the experience was overwhelmingly positive. Super friendly and knowledgeable. I just moved to DC and the worst thing in any new city is knowing that the average salon regardless of price will butcher my coarse, straight Asian hair. (Thanks genes! Really did me a solid there.) I had been for my own hair years ago and didn't think it was worth the price compared to the inexpensive suburban places I used to go to... so I went back to the suburbs each time. I've been coming here since moving to DC almost 10 years ago and it's always been fast and relatively inexpensive. The last couple times I've noticed a lot of staff turnover and a bizarre deterioration in customer service. I came today with a reservation for JC. It was great because no one was there. The receptionist confirms the appointment, sits me in her chair, asks me which number (referencing their buzzer). While responding, she cuts me off and says, "I'll just start cutting and see what you think since you didn't tell me." I told her you'll have to give me another minute. She waits a beat and then decides to untie the smock and asks me to move down two chairs to another stylist. At this point I'm bewildered and ask to confirm my appointment with JC. After my far in advanced scheduled appointment at Bubbles canceled on me 3 hrs before, this gem on H st took me as a walk up. First off, I went in at 11:25 am and walked out at 11:42pm. 5 stars for quick, straight to the point service (I did not require a shampoo before my cut). JC was amazing. He listened to exactly what I said and although this was the first time I cut my hair in 10 years I was not nervous at all. He took over 6inches off (sorry to the guy next to me for all the hair that kept flying everywhere). I could not be more happy with the final product. Typically when I get my hair cut at other places I'm not totally satisfied until a week or two later when my hair's grown out a little. Here I'm happy from the first day. They know how to cut Asian hair. Mine sticks straight out when it gets short but she knows how to texture it so that it doesn't do that. I just went though recently and JC cut my hair and didn't really listen to what I wanted. Was hoping to get a fade into a long on top with scissors. I've always been happy with the hair cuts I get here and have been coming here for over two years. But my experience today has me looking for a new place. I present pretty androgynous if not masculine. I'm a women but I usually by my clothes in the men's section and base my hair cuts off pictures of men. Every year time I go in for the past two years I show them the same picture of a man for reference. The cut is simple they use clippers and usually charge me for the men's price of $25. Today I was charged $35 because it was a "woman's cut". Same short clipper cut with a picture of a man for reference. When I said that's crazy I got a men's cut it should be $25 she said it's not based on the cut but the gender of the person?! Why are they charging 40% more for the same exact cut based on gender?! If I was a man and sat in the same chair, and got the same simple cut it would have been $10 less! If I were asking for a more complicated cut or style or something extra I would totally understand a price difference. But charging two different prices for the exact thing based solely on gender is nuts. Unlikely to to go back unless they reconsider their prices and actually base them on the amount of work that goes into the cut not the gender of the person. read more

I paid what is locally considered to be a low price for a decent haircut in a comfortable location. I plan to return here for my next cut. More details below, you can skip the backstory if you like. Backstory: First let me say it hurt my heart to pay $25 + tip for a haircut. But that's the district's seemingly LOWEST going rate for a men's cut outside of a couple places where nobody speaks English and they may or may not harvest your organs in exchange for a $17 cut. To compare, in my faraway rural hometown $11 bucks gives you a roughly comparable cut. To really blow y'all's minds, there's another unisex shop back home where for $6 (SIX!) you get a men's cut, shampoo, neck and sideburn shave with hot shaving cream, AND a really awkward head massage with a handheld vibrator. But enough about that. I hate people who move and then blather on about all the things that were so great back home. If they were so great why'd you move sport? Well, for starters that $6 cut place barbers were the kind of far-right conservatives that are one step away from using their tiki torch for something other than a backyard cookout. And by God they'd let you know it, and usually they'd wait to ask whether you agreed that Newt Gingrich was a good, Godly family man (this was 2011 mind you) right when they had the aforementioned straight razor on your sideburns just inches from your eyes and throat. No thank you! Needless to say for $6 I risked death and disfigurement for well nigh 10 years, I reckon. H STREET - FIRST CUT I visited this H Street barbershop around 3pm on a weekday. All the barbers appeared to be Korean women. There were only two on duty and two customers in the chairs with no one else waiting. While I had made an appointment online with a specific person based on yelp reviews nothing more was said about that and I sat in Wong's barber chair (a different barber)about 10 minutes before my scheduled appointment. I didn't really care as I was on a tight schedule and had no idea who to trust with a simple men's cut. I told her what I wanted and she got right to buzzing. She had a nice array of shiny scissors laid out and later used them as you'd expect. We made absolutely no conversation which was fine but it different than what I'm used to. She was pretty quick but it DID feel more thorough than my normal "11 buck Chuck" haircut. I will say I thought she was a little terse in directing me how to position myself but maybe I was being a difficult client. I knew better than to expect a shampoo for $25 as that's listed as a $35 combo on their website. I will say that I was disappointed that I got no hot shaving cream treatment to my sideburns and neck line but rather just the buzzer. She did a good job getting the hair off after the cut with several big blasts or hair dryer air. I paid cash (is it cash only?) plus tip and went on my way. I was a little bit ambivalent at first but I admit I started feeling fabulous about the cut after a while. She did a great job blending and I thought she styled my hair in a novel way that turned some heads on the walk home. Bottom-line: this "cheap for DC" barbershop is a solid choice for a decent no frills men's cut. I asked for a hair cut using a reference photo of myself and the hair cut I got looked like a sloppy version of that photo.
