In early 2021, I found myself moving from a 1 bedroom condo to 4 bedroom newly constructed home. Needless to say, the place was empty and the furniture that I did have was a poor fit with the design and style of my new house. I found Gwenn on an internet search. I interviewed a few other designers but hired Gwen after her receiving her detailed follow-up email from the initial visit. In that email she clearly articulated a vision for how my house should be furnished and accessorized. I was sold: "Based on what I gathered from you and your home, I imagine the design of your space would fall somewhere in the realm of warm contemporary, comfy, understated but a touch swanky, masculine, PNW natural / rustic. Neutral and subdued colors, varied natural textures, layered and homey, soulful. Furnished with timeless and quality elements that could work in future homes too." Gwen has executed on the vision perfectly all the while taking my feedback and taste into consideration. Gwen selected furniture, carpets, lighting, art, plants, and décor for my office, living room, bonus room, master bedroom, kitchen, outdoor patio, and hallways. She helped me accessorize my kitchen with all new cookware, knives, silverware, gadgets, etc. Saying that Gwen selected all of these items does not do justice to her work. The pieces selected were of the highest quality. Quality observable to the eye and to the touch. Most the pieces selected are themselves a work of art that give me joy just to look at daily. Some of the pieces were custom made to be the perfect fit for the space. Gwen found the craftspeople and helped design these custom pieces. Gwen was a consummate professional throughout the entire process. She did all the coordination of ordering and deliveries. Gwen found electricians to install the lighting and spent all day here making sure that a custom light fixture was installed. Her punctuality is something that I must comment on because when she told me that she would be at my house at a certain time I could set my watch to her arrival. I sincerely appreciated this punctuality because I believe it speaks volumes to how she cares about her clients and her craft. All of this work and sourcing was during COVID shutdowns when lead times on furniture exploded which made the project more difficult. All of the accounting and billing was online and easily accessible. In summary, Gwen designed the spaces in my home in a way that bring a smile to my face ever day. Realizing my main floor needed warmth and welcome, and knowing I needed help in getting to that kind of coziness, I looked online and found the interior designer Gwen Williams with Atmospheric Design. Gwen has completely transformed my main floor-kitchen, powder room, entrance hall, dining room and living room, with the office being next. She made suggestions and explained the reasoning behind it so I understood why something needed to be different - be it with height, color, texture or arrangement. Her sense of color is keen and she even helped us choose the exterior color of the house and front door. The changes we made on the main floor were pretty extreme and my husband and I couldn't be happier. She saw the two love seats that focused on the fireplace chopped the room in half and neglected the view out the west window. She helped me decide on a different arrangement that opened up the room and invited people in, eliciting a sense of awe, excitement and beauty. I was looking for help furnishing our new house: adding coziness, texture, and color. Gwen came highly recommended by several people in my neighborhood. First she made some seemingly simple suggestions to rearrange things, which I did on the spot, that made a huge difference. She shared the interior-design principles behind the changes as well, so that we could use them in any room. For items she suggested buying, Gwen was able to pull up great examples right there on her laptop -- in our price range -- so that we would know what to look for. She literally saved me hours. Not only on research but on returning and reselling the random choices I would have made. A few examples: Our dining room is challenging: a small space made smaller by several doors that need to open, and we wanted to be able to seat six people. I had already spent so much time trying to figure out what to do. It took Gwen mere minutes to point us to the perfect table. In our entryway, Gwen suggested a rug to liven up the space. She pulled up examples of rugs that would look good with our artwork, showed us how to more efficiently search online, talked about what materials and pile heights of rugs work where, and took measurements for us -- making sure doors could open properly, which I wouldn't have thought of. Now our house feels cozy as soon as we walk in. Our favorite change is the vibrant new rug in our living room. Looking at it brings me joy, along with knowing it was created by a Black designer. I never would have found the rug on my own or, if I had, been able to envision it working. These are only a few of the updates to seven rooms that Gwen recommended in a single session. She included detailed follow-up notes. (Definitely take your own notes, too, so that you capture specifics in the way you need.) Gwen shared interior-decoration principles that will guide us long-term. She made herself available to buy items for us without pushing additional services. I also appreciate that feng shui informs her work. She listens, observes, and quietly offers various ideas, rather than overpowering your preferences. (I'm thinking of a guy at a design store years ago who tried really hard to sell us on a fake palm tree, even after we said that is something we would never buy in a million years.) We have been thrilled with our experience working with Gwen at every step of the way. After years of living in apartments, we hired her when we bought our first house to help us furnish and design the interior. In the very first visit to our home, she made a number of suggestions that completely transformed spaces. For example, she recommended based on Feng Shui philosophy that we make our entry area feel more open and welcoming by having only a rug and a bench there, and make a place for shoes and a console for putting down keys and things further into the house. She suggested changing the orientation of an L-shaped couch that completely reoriented the room in a great way. And she recommended taking the doors off of some low cabinets in our family room to make them more accessible to our toddler and add some visual openness. There were a number of thoughtful changes like that that made a huge difference right away. When it was time to think about purchasing furniture, she had a clear outline of what we could expect in terms of budget, at low, medium, and high costs. A former boyfriend of mine has this huge sprawling turn of the century house in Seattle's Capitol Hill. It has a large main floor that includes an open kitchen/living room adjacent to a front room that is sort of a den. When we first started dating I noticed that while the main floor had been re-modeled to a more open modern standard, it still retained some awkward-ness in terms of layout and function... Well several weeks later, what a surprise! Gwen had come and worked her magic!! She transformed the 'den' area into a comfy nook- kind of like a salon for enjoying the soapstone wood stove. The living room sectional and furniture were re-arranged as well. Best of all, she redid much of the art, lamp, table and plant placings which really opened up the space and added interest to long forgotten corners. The whole place went from being awkward to inviting, with a flow between these two rooms that was hard to achieve. It sounds incredibly corny to say someone has changed your life, but after my Space Transform yesterday, I believe in this type of power. I moved into a new space a year ago, and I felt like I had done a decent job of arranging furniture, hanging art, etc. I bought new pieces and also had some old furniture. But when Groupon posted an offer from Space Transform recently, I thought it would be cool and fun to actually see what an expert thought of my space. I was looking for improvement and Gwen delivered beyond any basic expectations. I'm only slightly familiar with feng shui, and was also curious from that aspect. Gwen spent three solid hours at my place (I was exhausted!) and her work has made such a huge difference ... even just overnight. She re-arranged all of my art, helped educate me about feng shui and the way furniture in a room, lamps and other items play into the energy. She showed me how to group photos and how height is important, instead of the art-in-a-straight-line formation I had going. As I told her, I know that I have a lot of work to do still ... things like getting rid of clutter and clearing out corners filled with bad juju (cremated pet remains that I forgot about - I know, creepy!). Do you ever feel like you just need a change in your environment, but you don't know how to do it? That's how I was feeling, just tired of looking at the same old furniture arranged the same way since I got it 10 years ago. I had no idea how to find a designer, nor did I want to buy all new furniture. I just wnted to get advice on the possibilities. Luckily, I looked on trusty yelp , and found Gwen and Spacetransform. Gwen was just what I wanted. For a flat fee, she came over to my house (I live in San Jose) equipped with furniture sliders and picture hanging hooks. We talked awhile about what I didn't like, but basically, I just let her do her thing. Gwen is sweet and talented,and is a very efficient and diligent worker. For a solid three hours she moved around furniture to align with feng shui concepts, and it really opened up the rooms. She moved art and other decorative objects from one room to another to create new looks. Also, she made a diagram designating where lighting should be, so that when I got around to buying lights (which I needed) I'd know where to put them. Just having that plan is so great, I refer to it all the time. I was so happy with Gwen's work, that when my mother had an in-law apartment to rent, Gwen came over and helped stage it. She was not one to make me feel like I had to run out and by all new things but instead worked with what I had, helping to rearrange my furniture and to decorate with my art and plants. If something is lacking, she will make helpful suggestions on how to fill the void. Like for me, I needed a functional and aesthetically pleasing work and display bookcase/desk for our living room. She knew exactly where to find pieces like this online and sent me a few links, in a range of prices, making the whole buying process that much easier. Gwen also helped me figure out what to do with a small room, adjacent to the main living room. Gwen came up with the genius idea of turning the smaller room into our tv/movie watching hangout space and reserving the main living room for entertaining guests and relaxing. It now seems so obvious because the rooms look and work so well, but before we moved in we were really stumped on how to use them! It's always fun to walk through our house after Gwen's been by, because it feels brighter and more in order. My Dad, a highly critical man with a discernment for fine things, was visiting from out of town recently and commented on how he liked how the dining room table was angled differently than the previous time he visited, and how the lamp at the end of table was a nice touch. That slight change in perspective, and that small suggestion on where to place a lamp, all made by Gwen, made a big difference in the overall scene of the room. I cannot even begin to put into words what has occurred since working with Gwen Williams. This has been one of the most extraordinary transformations of my lifetime! It all began with my wanting to purchase a new dining room set. Gwen is exceptional in her field and I will never work with anyone else. Also, I am taken aback that now that every item has its place, I no longer spend Saturday mornings cleaning. I merely put things back in their place and my unit is "always spotless and stunning." Prior to this I had planned on hiring a housecleaner. That will be necessary now. Gwen told me that she could make my bedroom a "sanctuary." This she did indeed! Shortly after I moved into a new home, I contacted Gwen about properly organizing/orienting my home office. Since we'd just moved in, there were plenty of rooms that needed attention. My now-husband and I are the sorts of folks who can choose colors and we do, I guess, have a "style" that we were after. But we're not so good at putting it all together. At any rate, Gwen reviewed my home and told me the area that needed the most attention was actually our living room -- and so we focused on the living room instead. I appreciated her integrity with that -- she could've worked on my office, as that was the reason I first called her. Within three hours, the living room was completely transformed. Because I am not a "visual" person (once I put a piece of furniture somewhere, it "lives" there forever), I couldn't have arranged our belongings the way she did -- to be more functional for us, and also more aesthetic for our space. For instance, the art we had hanging on our stone fireplace got swapped out with a piece I wouldn't have chosen, but which looked much better. The way I look at it, the few hundred dollars spent to optimize our existing belongings cost far less than our going out and trying to buy new lamps or art to make the space look the way we hoped it could. Not only that, but I could not do it myself. Thumbs up for SpaceTransform, and also to the overall concept of interior space redesign. Our living room works better for us, shows off our art pieces, and makes our ragtag assortment of middle-class furniture look more intentional and "thought-out."
