so i live across from atwater, and as a beer aficionado, i was more than excited to have one of my favorite breweries across the street from me. however, and for whatever reason, since i've lived across from them, my visits while being their neighbor have been very bizarre and discomforting i typically go in by myself and when i tell you the looks and stares i get from staff as if i have no reason being there. hilariously enough, they have the most updated version of the pride flag sadly hanging incognito in their space, but apparently when a nonbinary queer like me walks through, there's not warmness or welcoming energy from most bodies. typically i get served by the extremely obnoxious and loud employee - i get heavy boston energy from him, but he could easily be from bloomfield hills - every time i come in while and he's working, i just want to turn right around (and i have!). i've stayed away for a minute because of this dude. so, today i thought i'd try to give them one more chance, perhaps i wasn't reading the room correctly - nope. same distant, "why are you here" type of energy. no warmth, no friendliness. whoever the person with the green shirt & tan hat working the evening on 7/02 was just pathetically absent and unaware of how to take care of their customers. i sat at the bar in front and not one time was i checked on until the sweet Nina came and attended to me after she could see my body language. meanwhile, green shirt and tan hat ignored me the entire time i patron-ed, ignore me when i had to yell at him three times cos he acted like he couldn't hear me & i wanted to make sure someone wasn't sitting in the seat i was going to take, and felt that it was appropriate to bring his tray of silverware to come polish them directly next to me. mind you, he was chatting up the coupled-patrons to his left (i was to his right), even immediately tending to them earlier when they sat at that bar as they arrived (there's a line in the middle of the bar where you typically order drinks). at this point, it's a "no dawg for me" with atwater. i've given them chances, i've tried to recognize that they might be stressed, but to feel that i'm not welcome perhaps cos of the fact that i'm a very visible queer person of color is absolutely unacceptable. thankfully the beer is mid level and not worth going back for - griffin claw & full measure are much more welcoming places read more

I'm beginning to think happy hour is just compensation for my missed ordered food and lack of service, but then again you're not even utilizing happy hour because no one came for the two hours. Came in just to give this place a try. So we only ordered a Appetizer which was the pretzel with beer cheese and mustard. The pretzel was warm and soft and just the right amount of salt to. We tried the Guava Rita which had just a little hit of spicy and the Belle Isle Breeze which was on the sweeter side. They had like 29 beers ale and what not on tap to. We sat outside to enjoy the weather. So no one ever came out to check on any of the customers that were sitting outside so I can't say how the service really is. But the girl at the bar had a sweet smile the whole time we were up there ordering and she also made our drinks. We knew she wasn't going to come outside because she was the bartender. read more

I've been to this Brewery many moons ago and am happy to say that it still has the cool vibe and atmosphere that it had years ago. The service was still very friendly and the beer is good too. I didn't partake in any of the menu items so I can't speak to the food but it looked like they were somewhat vegan friendly and had a few options. So, in a nutshell if you're looking for a place where you can hang out and enjoy a few pints with friends this could be the spot for you. I will say though that it can get a little bit loud but that's part of the hopping pub experience. read more

Stopped in for a quick beer on the way back home from the Eastern Market. This brewery is on Joseph Campau near the now closed Rattlesnake Club on the Detroit river. The seating is mostly high tops or the bar and everything was clean and nicely done with a small arcade and the brewing and canning area in back. We sat at the bar and our order was filled in short order. I had a Purple Gang Pilsner and it was good, nice and crisp. We happened to visit the following establishment on one of Michigan's more hot days. In fact it was over 100° even with the scorching heat to staff was incredible friendly and accommodating as we waited for our order they offered us additional refills to help beat the heat. My only con about this establishment is the lack of vegan options. They had a hummus platter, but I wish there was more variety. Overall, the staff was amazing. There was ample seating and everything went smoothly. There's also some street parking nearby. read more

I'm giving out most recent visit 3 stars and trust me, that's very generous. But they are one of the coolest, most chill breweries in Detroit so I'll be generous. We visited on a Saturday, early afternoon, and the place was pretty dead. IDK if you always have to order food and drinks at the bar, or if it was the time of day or if it was just because they were short staffed (because they were). The guys got beers, no complaints. The girls got cocktails and the bar tender had to read the recipe cards to make them. I mean, everyone has to start somewhere but it did throw me a bit. The drinks were ok, nothing special or great. We wanted an app and thought the pretzel sounded good, until we learned they had burmt the beer cheese and didn't have enough ingredients to make another batch until after their next delivery some time later that day. We were trying to figure out what else to order when a customer from another table got up and went into the kitchen to see where his food was. Yikes!! We decided to leave and hit up another brewery for some grub. Would I go back? I'm not sure. There's a lot of cool breweries in Detroit. I hope it was just a bad day and not the new norm. read more

Super busy here before a concert at the Aretha Franklin Amphitheatre. Kitchen was slammed so they stopped taking food orders for a while. Thankfully we got ours in before the cutoff or I'd have left. Burger was nothing special but nothing wrong with it. I appreciated the large portion of chips. Pretzel bites were fine, didn't blow me away. Was shocked to see zero non alcoholic items on the menu. No hop water, mocktails, or sodas advertised. I ended up ordering a lemonade cocktail without liquor. Same difference I guess but I'd rather have something with some intention behind it. read more

After a Michigan Central Station tour, I stopped by for a late lunch on Saturday. You seat yourself, and the staff will come to your table. I had the pulled chicken sandwich with onion rings for my entree. The food came out extremely fast but was mid. I enjoyed a shandy and a VJP. Unfortunately, their flagship VJP nitro was out. High/low/bar seating. Biergarten. Moderately clean. Good service. Pricy food and Atwater branded merchandise. Noisy. WiFi but no password. Dirt lot parking or limited paid street parking. I was not expecting much from this establishment. We're talking airport food after all. In my many years of traveling i have learned not to expect much. I was very happily surprised, actually blown away by the quality of the food. I ordered the Cheese burger, it was absolutely fantastic! It was fresh and hot dripping with cheese and bacon and onion jam. It was cooked perfectly to order. I couldn't wait to take the first bite and then couldn't put it down. The accompanying frys were sensational as well. Im quite sad I will likely not find myself neat Atwaters again. Stopped in with the family as we were going to fire and ice festival and we wanted some food and beers before. I always liked their beer as dirty blond was one of my favorites, but I tried several others in a flight and that was cool. We all ordered food and it was really good actually, as I had the pesto chicken sandwich and we had margarita pizza too. Good beer and good food especially for a brewery. My only knock would be service, it took a long time to get my order and when we wanted to leave it took forever to get our bill. Really enjoyed my time here with my family on a Friday in Detroit. I always love local breweries and brew hopping and I appreciated the ton of flavors of beer they had . The only con of this place was that if you wanted to sit upstairs on their rooftop patio, you had to order from upstairs, but they only had a limited selection of the beers and none of the ones we wanted. We went downtstairs to order the beers for my parents and us and while my parents sat there, they made them purchase water. A little 8oz bottle for a dollar a piece. I get it, she needs to make money up there as the bartender too, but why not have more flavors upstairs? It was a nice evening of course we would rather sit outside than in the dark brewery downstairs. After that though, we enjoyed our drinks and took some pictures by the cool Detroit sign. I tried an Atwater Brewery beer at a different restaurant in Detroit, and I liked it so much that I wanted to visit the source. So I bopped over to the Rivertown Warehouse District to visit the brewery itself. Long story short: They have great beers here! I wanted to try as many of their beers as I could but didn't want to get blackout drunk, so I opted for a flight of their fruity beers. I'm not typically a fruity beer person, but a flight of them sounded refreshing and fun, so I went with it. I liked all of them! They have several different flight combinations to choose from. Atwater seems like it's mostly a beer place, but they also have great food. We ordered pierogis (because I never see those on a menu, so what the heck), and they were tasty. They were carbs on carbs with dipping sauce, but they paired well with my carby drinks. I had children with me, so I ordered the chicken tenders with fries, and a burger with onion rings. All of the food was really good, but especially the fries: they were crispy yet mealy on the inside. Atwater doesn't have a kids menu, but they do have kid-friendly food (chicken tenders and burgers). This is a brewery, but kids are most definitely welcome! We saw many other people with young children at other tables. They also have high chairs, too. The way to order here is a little different: You pick a table, and menus are at the tables. Then you walk over to the bar and order your food and beverages. Then you sit back at your table and wait for your food, and they bring out you your food. You could also just sit at the bar and order if you're an adult and didn't have children with you (I did). They have little plastic cups and a water dispenser so you can serve yourself water, and games to play at the table while you wait. It's a very chill and pleasant atmosphere for all ages. read more

It was a slow, rainy day in Detroit and a weekday so I don't know how it always is, but it was pretty slow when we were there. I really enjoyed the vibe and loved the atmosphere! The decor was a bit industrial and gritty with high ceilings and wood accents. We didn't eat here so I can't comment on the food, but it's a brewery so we all know we're here for the beer! This location come along way since first opening. Being back after a considerable amount of time, I was impressed with the ambiance and look of the brewery. There is rooftop seating, but just like their GPP location, they lack real any protection from the sun, so it's hard to stay up there on a sunny day for an extended period of time without being uncomfortable. Our intention was to eat on the rooftop but it was too hot and so ended up inside of the brewery. The space is large, so ample seating was available, on a Saturday afternoon. I ordered the taco salad. The dressing it came with was pretty good. I think it was a spicy or Chipotle style ranch. If the taco bowl wasn't so greasy, I would have enjoyed it more, otherwise it was average at best, but satiating. The server was prompt with drinks and food. This place is classy and has outside seating right in the front near the main entrance. Peking is a little tight, there is a parking area,that's kind of fenced in. We went during lunch and it wasn't crowded for 12 noon on a Monday afternoon. The food looked good and tasted great! Always a great time at Atwater brewery! This is probably my favorite brewery in Detroit based on the location (close to the riverwalk) and the fact that they have a rooftop in the summertime to hang out on. Went here last week and sat inside at the bar to watch a Wings game, we had a couple of beer flights. My favorite was the Vanilla Java Porter, it has that rich dark taste without being too bitter. For lighter beers, the Detroit city juice hazy IPA is my favorite. This place is a fun spot to be at all year round whether it's the summer (they have a great rooftop) or the winter where you can be cozy inside with great food options, beer, and board games. The service at the bar was great, they made a lot of recommendations to us and were friendly to talk to. I can't speak to the food since we didn't order any, but next time will definitely order some apps. The people next to us ordered one of those large pretzels and it looked amazing. 225 SPEAKEASY IS THE BEST POP UP BREWERY!!! They have their Candy Cottage Christmas theme going currently and when I tell you it tops all the other holiday bars, I mean it! I was invited to an influencer evening here and I was blown away. First, the decorations, they went ALL out, it feels like Detroits very own Candy Land! The drinks, not only are they GORGEOUS and aesthetically pleasing but they are DELICIOUS. And don't even get me started on the staff, each and every person that works here is so attentive and kind!! In additional to their holiday drink menu, they also offer a small food menu and you can't go wrong with anything on it! We ordered the grilled cheese & tomato soup, the chicken & waffles and both types of Crepes they offer and everything was 10/10. Went to Atwater today as I do often during the summer especially after I'm at Belle Isle. Love this location as I live close by and bring my family here every time they're in from NY. However, today I went and ordered the beyond brat which is a vegetarian option. I have ordered and enjoyed that many times for many years here. Unfortunately today I was served a real sausage. I took 1 bite before asking my meat-eating friend to try and she confirmed. The bartender seemed less than empathetic and said they would remake it just to be sure. No offer to comp the meal or drinks or anything. As someone who has been vegetarian for 7 years, being served real meat was upsetting and the lack of accountability from the establishment and having to ask for a discount or a free round as a result was disappointing. Especially considering my friend finished her meal while I sat there with an empty plate while they remade it. They were also 100% out of dirty blonde which is obv a staple. We went to the 225 Spookeasy tonight, which is part of Atwater but has it's own entrance and vibe. It was tastefully decorated for Halloween and had a full, inventive list of Halloween inspired cocktails. I had The Bougieman and partook in a syringe shot and a Blood Bag. The staff was great and quick. Only small compliant is that, I guess they have changed the pizza at Atwater... It used to be a more yeasty, floppy crust, akin to NY Style pizza and with meltier cheese and now it's like an upside Tostinos pizza (crunchy flatbread, no cheese pull melty cheese). Like, you're not going to starve but if you were dreaming of their previous pizza, this will not satisfy that craving. Other than that, a great place to get drinks during spooky season! read more

We wanted to go to Andrew's on the Corner, but it was closed. So we tried Atwater, big mistake. We both had a burner, I had the kids burger and it was tasteless. Worse were the fries they were COLD, like no warmth at all. Hubs got the b double decker pub burger, cheese was so cooked it was hard and his fries were COLD Someone had a dog there (we were sitting outside on picnic tables that are rough and warped) and some lady had a dog that barked during our whole dinner. I have not been to this location in 11 years, and let me tell you, what an amazing transformation they've made. From casually drinking with buddies around the brewing equipment, to a full fledged tap room, restaurant, AND a rooftop bar, this place has come a long way. We popped in for a bite to eat and a couple of drinks. Service was prompt, food was great, and the beers were flowing. I must admit, I was not too big of a fan of their brews many years ago, but now they have some really solid offerings. My biggest gripe is the rooftop patio did not have any sort of shade. We attempted to sit upstairs in early June and even then it was way too hot to sit up there for any amount of time.
