Breakfast sandwiches are okay but the pastries are awesome! The blueberry muffin was one of the best I've had. They were also doing a lot for Covid including plastic partitions between tables, sanitizer at the door, limiting time dining in. Heads up, they are not allowing people to sit and work like you would at a coffee shop because of Covid. Some girls were very politely asked to leave per their policy for keeping people safe and tables open. I would return here for sure. read more

I really, really wanted to like this place because it's so cute and they make the whole block smell like bread in the morning, but I just can't like them enough to justify the bite it takes out of my wallet. The food is average, I've had some bad coffees, some of their baked items were either stale or just not good enough to finish eating, and it costs a decent amount more than I'd like to pay for what I'm getting in my cup or on my plate. Awww I loved this place!! And I do mean this whole place, Vermont is so beautiful! It was so green and fresh everywhere! This town is so cute and I would love to come back and explore around, but we only stopped in August First for lunch passing thru. It's adorable and I dig the no laptops rule ( never seen that before!) they bake all their breads and everything freshly made. So this has to be kind of a two part review, since August First is both a bakery and a restaurant. The bakery is top notch. They make the best baguette I've had outside of France, along with amazing croissants and other goodies. Their other loaves are amazing as well. But seriously, that baguette is worth five stars alone. I love to get one in the morning and eat it throughout the day with some fresh cultured butter, or top it with meats and greens for little sandwiches. Their baguettes are also available fresh daily at City Market. If you arrive too late and they are sold out at August First, sometimes you can still find one there. I am so grateful to be able to get such a great baguette a short walk from where I live. I also really like August First for breakfast, brunch, or lunch. Portions are generally a little big for me, but I'm a light eater. Coffee is great. The space is lovely, especially in the summer with the big doors open. read more

God, I loved this place. August First is what I associate with the state of Vermont as a whole. I visited with my family a few years ago during a New England / Northeastern US road trip. I only got to try a few places in Vermont as we passed through, and I'm so glad this sweet little spot was one of them. The whole space is absolutely charming. It's a wonderful spot if you want to explore Burlington and need a safe jumping-off point. The two things I appreciated most were the kid-friendly touches (coloring pages, books, etc.) and the maple biscuits, which were absolute heaven! I also loved that the space was a "laptop-free" zone at the time. I'm not sure if that's still the case, but I appreciated it. Even as a freelance writer who often writes in coffee shops and similar spaces, it was nice to have one space without the rows of computers. When in Burlington, a visit to August First is a must! Their breakfast sandwiches are the best, especially the Day Maker $11, no ketchup and no extra sauces are needed. At 10:45am on a Monday, there was a line as expected because the food and especially their baked goods (fresh baked bread and pastries) is That good. The hot chocolate cookie $1.50 is Outstanding.
