I took my daughter there to pick up her glasses in March. She had ordered clear frames for her glasses but when we got there to pick them up they were black. My daughter is 12yrs old and this is her very first time wearing glasses. So she picked the clear frames because she felt like they would help her transition into the habit of being seen with glasses ( I don't know, just her preference ) but anyway I asked the lady helping me about the color she ordered and she looked at her paperwork and stated " well it does say clear right here ". She then proceeded to tell me that she would order the pair my daughter wanted in the first place. It is now June and I have been there 2 times since to get the frames, but each time I was told something about how they don't see anything about her getting the frames she requested. So basically they're just giving people what they want to give them and later acting as if they have intentions on rectifying the situation when they're clearly going to great lengths to do the opposite. And after more than two months, my daughter still doesn't have the glasses she asked for. Horrible customer service read more

The new owner and optometrist is great. He has done the best job with my tough-to-correct vision of anyone here in Kalamazoo. Kudos to him. On the other hand, the office staff are a train wreck. Only one person is knowledgeable and really good at her job, but she has some chronic health issues she is struggling with. One of the other people acted like she could measure me, but then the competent person had to redo it all. My original appointment and order was in Feb. It took months to get my glasses, and they aren't right. I'm still waiting (it's June now) to be told when the remakes will be ready. I am frustrated with having to constantly call them to check on the status of my glasses - why can't they update me? If it wasn't for the Opto, there would be no saving grace for August Optical. read more

My wife tried to make an appointment on line, but they never got back with me because there is something wrong with their site. I finally called them and left a message. They called me back the next day and I attempted to make an appointment. Unfortunately, they person I was talking with seemed to be reading from a script and would not listen to anything I said. Just kept talking over me and would not stop. I don't have my insurance information handy for her because my wife has been handling financials ever since I got sick in 2018. I only knew it was Blue Cross Blue Shield. But that is not enough. Apparently, they cannot make an appointment for me unless I provide them with additional information first, even though I told them that I would pay in cash if my insurance was not accepted (my wife looked them up and they are in my network). I have never heard of this sort of thing before, and I have been caught up in the medical system for a few years now. I am going somewhere else to get an exam. Somewhere where the booking process for patients is not so complicated for an apparently simple person like myself. read more

I've had perfect vision all my life up until the last couple years, and was starting to get really worried about some painful eye dryness and eye strain from looking at computer and screens so much for my work. I finally took the plunge and signed up for vision insurance this year, and was thrilled that the highly recommended local opticians at August Optical participate in my husband's employer's vision plan. The doctor was tremendously thorough and kind in her examination, and I was relieved to learn that my primary issue is nearsightedness that can be corrected by progressive lenses or reading glasses, And that's a painful eye strain can be somewhat eliminated by adding anti-glare to these glasses and that over-the-counter drops can help if I continue to have issues. The folks in the retail part of the shop were equally helpful. I felt bad trying on so many pairs of glasses, but since this is my first time doing so I wanted to be very thorough and find what felt best on my face and also looked good. It was difficult to determine this while wearing a face mask, and one of the staff members offered to give me a private area to try on where I could take my mask off and see how they looked. They were also super helpful in fitting my husband for his first pair of contacts and sent him home with a free 30-day trial pair to see if he winds up liking them. read more

I have had wonderful service from August Optical. Three years ago they helped me get a pair of glasses the day before my insurance ran out. And this year, they helped me replace lenses and frames that were chewed up by my loving canine. The frames had been discontinued and they searched around until they found them AND they helped me get them covered by a warranty. The staff are amazing and will do whatever they can to help you. read more

My wife and I have had nothing but problems. She has had both her safety glasses and regular glasses corrected due to not putting transition on the lenses and no anti-glare coating I have yet to get my glasses after a month when I called for an update was told they were not in yet and "would get here when they get here" read more

I've been going here for years. They take all forms of Medicaid and will work with you to get you the best deal possible. The doctors are all extremely kind and knowledgeable, the staff is very personable and helpful. All the latest and greatest in frames and lenses are available, plus they've always got fabulous promotions! If you do have Medicaid, odds are you'll need to book your appointment about a month in advance, because those fill up fast. Plus, you can grab a bite to eat right next door at QDoba! Win! read more

Friendly service all around. I love that they are concerned about getting you the best deal and what you need. They have great options and the staff makes you feel like family. We even love being able to stop in and get our glasses adjusted whether we have an appointment or not for Free! They really do care about their customers. Great place. The optomitrist is swell -- I mean it's like he's thrilled to be getting you the right kind of prescription and he pays attention to eye health as well. Anyway great bedside manner & a great Rx. I like the staff as well. One of the women is really competent at fitting the temples to the shape of your ears/head and getting the glasses to sit in the place that they were measured to. Anyone whose tried to modify there own temples knows how tricky it is to get right! Ok as to the review about the location & parking -- I was there yesterday (July 2015) & since they have "connected" their parking lot with the Qdoba next door, so you can get in that way especially since Qdoba's on a corner where you can just make a standard traffic turn (or just park @ Qdoba I suppose). I did have to return for a measurement they forgot to do before they could put the order in but that request to return occurred within an hour of leaving so they were promptly processing the order when they noticed the issue. My insurance coverage for optical needs doesn't cover contacts, but August Optical wanted $100 for the exam, two trial pairs, and a follow up exam, which is a price I couldn't beat. After getting my first pair of trials I was told to call back for the follow up exam and my second pair of trials. However, when I called back I was told they already decided on what contacts I would get, and I had to order a box of contacts from them before I could get my second trial pair. So... how is it a trial pair if I'm required to lock in my choice of contacts in order to get them? Why wasn't I told up front that I was required to order through them, with their higher prices, in order to get them? Why did I pay $100 for one exam and one pair of contacts? I was lied to and feel swindled, and will NOT be returning except to get what was promised me, or my money back. read more

This is literally the only review I have ever written for a business, and they are hands down the best place to go for eye care and customer service. I have gone to August Optical for several years. I often travel, and intermittently reside abroad, and the staff here have gone above and beyond to ensure I've got everything I need to manage my eye care when I'm away. One of their employees literally ran out onto the Kalamazoo train platform as I was departing for an extended trip to make sure I had my order of contacts. They have also worked with me to problem solve getting my scripts if I don't have access to email or fax. If you're looking for the best place for eye care and service, this is it. read more

First I should say I've been going to Dr. August at August Optical for about 4 years now. I think the world of him! He's so knowledgeable and really takes the time to make sure that the patient will have the best result possible! I have some difficult Optical issues and he's right up to date on state-of-the-art for my condition. He has a very pleasant staff and a great selection of eyeglasses and frames so you can actually end up with something that you like! Anyway, I had my first problem. After having my eyes examined by Dr. August I went out and chose a pair of glasses and lens, etc. Was told it would take a couple of weeks for the glasses to come in and when I didn't hear from August Optical I called to see where my glasses were. They were short-staffed and I was told that someone would call me back. I left my name and number. Didn't hear from anyone. So I called to inquire again. Eventually I found out that my glasses hadn't been ordered. That I needed to come back in and choose frames (again!) and go through the whole process. I wasn't very happy to say the least, but Sherry, the office manager, was wonderful! She personally helped me choose the most beautiful pair of glasses, as well as expediting the production so that I didn't have to wait quite so long. Sherry and August Optical bent over backwards to accommodate an unfortunate event. That's the kind of care and customer service they give. Once again I give August Optical a 5-star rating and would like to thank Sherry for her personal care in helping me select a pair of glasses that I look great in! My fiancé went in while pregnant with our first kid to get new contacts and "down payment" on glasses never ordered. Our child came about same time as contacts. The prescription was off and took months to get in. 90 days window passes. Have to pay for a new exam and money as down payment for glasses gone. Either use money for glasses and prescription that doesn't work or pay for new test. I couldn't believe they would charge for a new exam. Was told they run as a business...... read more

This place used to be okay, now they are unreliable. Their staff are ignorant and rude. When I call them I get an attitude and not the professionalism that i should be getting. I really don't get how they have customers when they close their doors early all the time. I ordered glasses for my husband and they ordered him the wrong pair. I also had to order my daughter a new pair of glasses and they told me two weeks. It has been almost three weeks and they finally came in. I go to get them and they closed before the time they said they closed. So now I have to wait again to get them cuz I don't live that close to the place. If I could find somewhere else that takes my insurance I would leave them in a heartbeat. read more

First off you should know that their Kalamazoo location is small and in an inconvenient location. West Main Street is a very busy street in Kalamazoo and their office is stuck in such an odd spot that you may miss it or very likely get hit trying to pull in. Besides that the parking is different, so be aware. They are always SUPER busy so expect to wait. They are well staffed but I still expected better. My eye glass exam was great but my big issue was the ordering. I ordered a pair of glasses on a Saturday and was quoted two weeks for their arrival. Two weeks came and went. I then called to inquire and they told me they couldn't even find my order in their files! WTF????????? I waited on the phone while she searched and searched finally resulting in her saying "oh yes...I see the order but it'll be another week or two. CRAP!!!!!!!! After another two weeks (nearly a month now) I placed a call to inquire. She said yes they came in yesterday but your voicemail was full when we called. That excuse does NOT fly with me considering I gave them my home phone number too! In conclusion, if I wouldn't of called I'd still be waiting. That's complete BS! They have good intentions but the service is unreliable and disappointing! At least I only need new glasses once a year! read more

I am in town visiting family and I inadvertently rolled over on my glasses and bent them up pretty good. I stopped by August Optical on West Main and was taken care of by, I think it was Brianna, Boyer. She was terrific. She straightened out and cleaned my glasses in no time and made some great suggestions for new glasses when I get back to Phoenix. I can highly recommend August Optical and Ms. Boyer. read more

This business is a train wreck. I had a difficult time getting my glasses in the first place and I purchased their cheap sunglass clip that costs $150, unbelievable. in 11 months it is broken and they will not warrantee the item. most reputable optical organizations guarantee the frames for 12 months. read more
