At the snack bar, while the grilled cheese had above-average bread and perfectly average American cheese, the clam chowder was pretty sloppy (albeit very Alaskan). At the dining room, the halibut was overseasoned and overcooked, with a dry texture and lacking flavor--hardly a good way to showcase Alaska's signature fish. For that, you'll need someone with a car or taxi. No service to the ferry. For the service it does provide, it's a bargain. If riding this with any frequency, buying tokens would save money. If using this weekdays, get a monthly pass. Students may also buy a monthly pass. Seniors 65+ gets a free ride after registering at City Hall for an exemption ID card. Everybody was super friendly and Captain George was exceptional , slowed down and stopped for all major animal sightings (whales , puffins, sea otters) , had incredibly detailed explanations on the history of the Fjords. Alexa (From Temple University ) was the deckhand extraordinaire ( also stepped in for the lunch server and doubled as an office hand in Haines and helped me with my booking ) , she was also incredibly knowledgeable and friendly of all aspects of the Fjords. This cruise in a whole day cruise, I just did the return leg, very highly recommend the whole cruise (both legs) . Never had a better cruise.

We called Glacier Taxi and Tours from Mendenhall Visitor Center asking for a ten person van. They…read moresaid no problem, 10 minutes. 20 minutes later we call again asking about the status of the van. They said it's on the way. (They didn't give us a cab number, unfortunately.) We called again after 30 minutes and they said they don't have any cabs available and tried to give us another number to book with someone else. We luckily managed to hail a van that had just dropped off a group so we didn't have to deal with Glacier Taxi and Tours' incompetence any more.

Only other way to get there is a 7 hour ferry ride or to fly to anchorage and drive 15 hours (through Canada). My flight was as at 8:30am, which was a rookie error on my end. These little planes do not fly in fog and due to poor visibility I sat in the airport until 3pm where they gave up and told me to come back tomorrow and try again! Booked the same flight for the next day and came back and early in the morning it was foggy but the fog burned off by 10am and we made it. Do t bother scheduling a flight BEFORE 10am! No need to go through security/TSA. They call your name and you walk right out on the runway. Plane had 4 seats (half the plane is used for cargo). Flight was AMAZING and well worth the wait! We flew Pretty low to the ground with amazing views of this beautiful area. Views of the water and mountains. Makes you thankful to be alive!

This was my second visit but my first flight in. Our flight was smooth and comfortable, an easy flight both directions. I would give a shout-out to all the staff. I must call out Gary, our pilot though, he made sure to cover all the official stuff, but also made the flight special because he was as excited as we all were to see the mountains and fjords.
