I can not get the impression of a stereotypical Chinese restaurant out of my mind. From the classic Chinese Zodiac placemats to the laminated white and red menus. With that said, WOW are their dumplings good. What's even better is the dumpling sauce mixture. I was skeptical at first about the different sauces being mixed together but one taste and all doubt was gone. The egg drop soup is out of this world. It is not the "buy in bulk" from the Asian version of Sysco stuff. The pork fried rice was also great. So, why only 4 stars? Well, you know how the best tasting retried beans are the worst for you because they are made with lard? The sauces on all the dishes is delightfully tasty but thick. I went to Auntie change last night around 9p (Friday night) and it was dead in there. It was a little worrisome since I remember it would usually have s good amount of people, but continued in. I got an order or eddemame, chicken dumplings, and shrimp dumplings. The eddemame was fine, nothing crazy, and the chicken dumplings were ok too. The shrimp though, weren't great. They had a strange smell about them and I ordered them steamed, but they over steamed them bc they were mushy and fused together. The insides was literally just shrimp, no other seasoning and it was those weird little shrimps. Not even ground up, just shrimp in wrapper. The waiter was nice enough and came by frequently, and the price was relatively inexpensive, but I don't think I'll be back if things aren't changed a bit. Came in earlier today for a late lunch with my boyfriend and I honestly wasn't impressed. I love dumplings so since it's called "dumpling house" I had high hopes but there wasn't anything special about them. I ordered the pan fried chicken dumplings and they weren't bad but they were soggy to the point that I felt like they were steamed. 1) Beautiful decor. There's a large fountain that provides trickling water that makes the ambience very peaceful. 2) I came for the dumplings and stayed for the duck and Mongolian beef. I really enjoyed the food and the waiter was nice, however when it came to paying, he asked me how much percent tip I wanted to give, he proposed 20 or 25% so he can add it to the bill. I told him he can bring it to me and I'll add it. However he stood their waiting to see what I will write down. I was feeling overwhelmed and frustrated but didn't have the guts to say can you come back. Although I felt he deserved a good tip I did not appreciate him telling me how much to give him it was sort of predatory. I don't think I will go back. Was nervous to eat here because of some of the reviews but we were pleasantly surprised with our to go order. We got the veggie lo mein, crispy spring roll, sesame chicken and fried pork dumplings. Dumplings tasted great, they are smaller than we thought but flavored well and a great crispy chewy texture. Noodles had a lightly grilled flavor and not too salty. The sesame chicken came with way too much sauce which will drown out the left overs, but I don't expect my leftovers to be crispy anyway. It's better than a 3-star but not a 5. Loved it! We had the chicken with veggies, fried rice, pork dumplings (steamed) and they brought a small portion of white rice too. We were three, enough for everyone. Hot green tea too. The service is fantastic. NY resident and I'm Peruvian too (Chifa all my life), so a happy Chinese meal is everything. This was 100% - very happy. The staff is attentive and the prices are for ballers on a budget or anyone in general that would enjoy a nice meal at a inexpensive price. Lunch specials start at $7! Can't be beat. The food- this place is packed with flavor! The hot-n-sour soup soup was Soo good I forget to take a picture. the chicken meals (No matter the dish), are always well cooked and tender... And mouthwatering! I'm a sucker for classic so we had the general so's (sp?) And sesame chicken dinners. I could tell they made an effort to distinct the sauces instead of "recycling" them and would recommend either. The dumplings- they cater to those who love to try dipping sauces - aka me! Each table has up to 8 flavors waiting for your attention. The dumplings are good on their own but trying the sauces is my favorite part! I was NOT a fan of these dumplings! I got the pork ones and the texture was absolutely awful to me. I don't know what it was or how they were cooked but the texture was a bad first experience.. along with that the pork filling just wasn't all that good to me. I asked him if invoked have my soup before my food obviously there is a language barrier but he disregarded and brushed me off moved on as if I didn't want to order more food. New Management? New Owners? What has been going on? For a year now consistently smaller portions. Quality has gone down as prices have gone up. But this last time was the absolute worse. I ordered our usual for 4 adults. The egg rolls had no filling, the ribs were tiny, white rice was 1/2 cup in tiniest container ever. Fried rice container wasn't even full; and had two shrimp on top and just a little chicken inside. The pork was non-existent. The Singapore noodles had ZERO protein and was spicy but with no other taste. Beef and broccoli had little of either but lots of gravy. The beef that was included was all gristel and fat...inedible. But the LAST STRAW? As usual, I asked for table mustard when picking up the order. An elderly lady, never seen her before, said .75 how many? I said my bill is $80 plus tip and you are charging me for table mustard? Are you serious? She said I can give you one for free. In the bag was the tiny cup only half full. I hope it was worth it lady bc you've lost a repeat customer and that was even before we tasted the food. Oh, by the way, we don't do delivery from there bc last time my 14 year old answered the door, cc already charged. She gave him $12 in cash for tip that I had given her and then turned to leave. The delivery guy then started to yell in chinese and pointed to cc Slip. She didn't understand so he filled in tip $20 and had her sign. So $12 in cash and $20 on cc bc a teenager answered the door. I called to report and they removed his cc add-on. Never again would I risk that again...no more delivery for us. I was so glad when we moved back inside the loop to have access to Auntie Chang's. Their food has always been great! For years, while we lived in Spring Branch, if we were in the area we would stop in for their lunch special. The food was always delicious and the service fast and efficient. Eating in the restaurant, the restaurant is always clean but it doesn't reflect the quality of the food. But now we have Uber Eats and can order delivery. Their service is still outstanding! On Uber Eats, you can't really change specific items on the menu to your preference. However, what I have done is to call the restaurant immediately before placing the order, giving them my name and letting them know that I was placing an order through Uber Eats, and then making the specific changes to the item that was being ordered. I have done this several times and the order arrives to my specifications. This is not always the case ordering from Uber Eats with restaurants that allow for modifications, but then don't follow the order! I love Auntie Chang's!!! read more
