This is such a cute restaurant. Beautiful bar, well decorated, very cheery. The bartender was our waiter and was attentive and friendly. If I was rating based on ambiance and service it would definitely be 5 stars. The food here is adequate, but not great. The salsa and guacamole tastes exactly like something you get out of a tub from Costco or somewhere similar. I am actually quite positive that that's what it was. They definitely were not not making it from tomatoes and avocados in the back of the restaurant. For dinner, we got the chicken tacos. They were good, but again tasted like the tacos you would end up with from a "taco kit" from your local grocery store. So they were good, edible, but not something I want to pay restaurant prices for. Margaritas were weak, but good. Because it is a cute restaurant I would come back and try something different. Three of us were looking for a good happy hour deal in San Juan, and saw that this place had 2-for-1 margaritas and mojitos. The best part was that their "happy hour" was from 6 to 10! (tourist off-season, I guess) The bartender was very friendly, giving great advice on drinks to order AND making great drinks! He even poured us a free "Puerto Rican shot" that was very tasty. I ended up getting 2 normal margaritas with top-shelf tequila. It was still part of the happy hour deal and was surprisingly affordable. My friends got fruity drinks that were amazing. We wandered to another bar later that night, but after a few rounds there we decided to come back to our friendly bar tender here to close out the night. read more

Worst meal I've had, in my lifetime. It was that bad. I ordered the "steak" fajitas and the meat used was definitely not beef even though that is what the menu said it was. Several of my friends ordered the same dish and we all agreed that it was probably goat meat. Even the onions on the sizzling plate didn't cook so we had mystery meat with raw onions. Terrible. Bartender was good and made a great mango batida with the best whipped cream I have ever had (super thick and creamy). Our server was a joke. Did not know anything in the menu and kept asking the bartender to help help. Food came wrong twice. Food was okay at most. My husband ordered Mexican pork dumplings that came out still frozen inside. My chicken quesadilla looked like pork quesadilla. Churros were dry (over fried) and sauce that came with it was disgusting. My husband's chorizo quesadilla was okay. This place is quite bad. The smoothies are disgustingly sweet and the fake syrup falls to the bottom after 2 minutes. If you are used to good Mexican food i.e you live in Texas, Mexico, California prepare to be disappointed. The guacamole is store bought along with the chips and nothing tastes fresh or authentic. I wasn't expecting much when we entered Aureola . The menu looked more American than Puerto Rican. Tired and hungry, we decided to give this place a shot. This is an absolute and undeniable tourist-trap of a restaurant. Stay away no matter how hungry you may be! Your stomach, patience, and pockets will all thank you for sparing them the hurt, time wasted, and outrageous cost of dining here. While the menu may offer up familiar Mexican dishes, it's all lost in translation once it reaches your table. For example, most Mexican dishes include rice -- here, rice is an additional side you will need to pay for -- in ways beyond money. I ordered an Al Pastor Burrito. There was absolutely nothing resembling pork cooked with pineapples in whatever excuse I got for an Al Pastor burrito. What I did get was a whole lot of wilted chopped lettuce and tomatoes along with something that I believe was supposed to be beans. About 3 bites into this awful "Mexican" meal, I already felt the rumbles in my stomach and knew I would be in for a much longer and intimate night with the porcelain god if I dared finish this meal. My family members' meals were no better including the enchiladas which were completely covered in what I can best describe as white Cheese Wiz. Forget about the guacamole and the refried beans they tout as being "made in-house". Both are unforgettably horrible and will also have you making a beeline for the bathroom soon after consuming either. And, as if all of that was not bad enough, this place can't even get a Margarita right. DO NOT ORDER THEIR HOUSE MARGARITA -- unless you are in the mood for a diabetic shock-inducing limeade with about the most meager splash of Tequila in them. When we asked why these were so sweet and weak, we were told it was the mix they use and that if we wanted a stronger drink, we had to ask for it "cargado" (charged) when we originally ordered. Lastly, as if having to endure a horrible, overpriced, and fake Mexican meal wasn't enough, we had to put up with an the insufferable, rigid, and insecure supervisor, Jennifer. This restaurant was recommended to me by my cousin, whose parents have a place in Puerto Rico. I was here for a convention, so I sought out this place to eat on one of our first nights. Wow, am I glad I did! I had one of the specialties, a whole Red Snapper, filleted vertically, stuffed with bell peppers, onions, capers, and, oh yes, Shrimps! I said Shrimps! All presented in a lovely cream sauces. Wow. The fish was delectable and the shrimp were very tasty, as well. Others in my party have continued to rave, days later, about their meals, as well. Food excellent, check. Decor is very pleasant, not pretentious at all, comfortable wood tables and chairs with tile floors. The bar seemed well stocked. Not an overly large place, maybe 12 tables? Probably a decent bar but forget the food. Got a burrito here and everything about it screamed Sysco. Iceberg lettuce. Cheese that was very reminiscent of grade school chalupas. Good authentic Mexican food. The nachos, and chicken tacos are fantastic. Someone ordered fish tacos and they were not pleased with their meal. Their margaritas are great and they do offer good beer drink specials. Their churros for desserts is absolutely delicious as well. I'll be returning again! read more

A very nice Mexican restaurant right in Old San Juan in a very comfortable space that you'd just want to hang out in, enjoy a margarita or two, and have some great Mexican fare. I ordered the chicken enchiladas, which came "deconstructed" rather than wrapped and doused in sauce. It was a much better way to present the dish, and I wish more places would do it this way, so you really get to taste and enjoy the flavor of the enchilada filling. Very nice! read more

Margaritas are heavy on booze. A serious plus. We ordered tacos, fajitas and nachos and the consensus is that carnitas trump all other meats. The chicken was a bit dry but beef was pretty tasty. Amadeus in Old San Juan is now Aureola. We stopped in for a couple of drinks and some appetizers. I had a glass of cava and my boyfriend had an Argentinian cab - both good and very reasonable. We also sampled a little of the Carribean fare - good but not memorable. read more

I loved Aurela. We showed up tired and hot after touring San Christobal and kite flying at El Morro. As soon as we walked in the door the super friendly staff made us feel at home and the sky opened up with a cooling rain. When my three year old grandson begged for "spaghetti" in this Latin restaurant the waitress's response was "no problem, I'll just go to the restaurant down the street and pick it up for you". What?!?! We had the beef tacos, nachos, sample platter and chicken fijitas all of which were exceptional, fresh, tasty and ample quantities. This place was good, not great. But consider the fact that you are in Puerto Rico, you aren't going to get the authentic Mexican cuisine that you might expect back in "the states" or elsewhere. We were hungry for something different so we decided on Mexican. :) What made this place great was the bartender. I so wish that i could remember his name... We engaged in a long conversation and learned much about the local area, much which is not seen or really even heard about unless you explore more outside of the typical touristy attractions. Stopped in here after a long day walking around the castles. The waiter was very helpful and let me practice my Spanish. 4 stars for the service, but the tacos were bland and not great quality. The worst part is the price- everything was really expensive. $3 for soda, $7 for chips, $9 appetizer, $1 extra for suave flour tortillas (they don't have corn by the way). The chicken was shredded and fresh and it all came in a tortilla bowl. My boyfriend ordered the chicken burrito with a side of tostones and enjoyed that as well! Food is is about 4 stars but the SERVICE is incredible. Ignacio was the host, server, bartender and at one point we bought he was the cook too! But he wasn't as he presented the gal who was the cook at the end of our meal. Located on a busy road i was expecting fairly decent Mexican food AT LEAST. I received the complete opposite. The drinks were average. I ordered tacos, the chicken was completely bland and pale. Had absolutely NO flavor and was doused in lettuce and cheese. My friends food was the same, had absolutely no flavor.
