We stumbled upon Don Tako after a walking tour through Old San Juan, and it ended up being one of the highlights of the day. We sat outside, which was surprisingly comfortable and perfect for a relaxed dinner after a long walk around the city. The vibe is easygoing, nothing overdone, just solid food and a welcoming setup. Our waitress was genuinely amazing--friendly, attentive, and gave spot-on recommendations. She pointed us toward the shrimp quesadilla, which turned out to be my favorite thing on the table. The birria tacos were also excellent--rich, flavorful, and absolutely worth ordering. It's one of those places you don't plan for, but end up remembering. A bit of the beaten path, you can find this Mexican-American cozy restaurant on the curved street west of the Tapia Theatre. The flavor of their meat dishes is excellent for the chimichanga and the chicken taco. Skip everything with corn chips as they are from a bag and not particularly fresh. The seasoning and mixes for our dishes were very flavorful and well done. The drinks run pricey, with a plain Mojito at $10. Food prices are reasonable. Service was very attentive, and fast, but the fifth star was lost by serving the two of us separately with a long wait between servings. This, for me, damaged the experience. It's a very busy restaurant but you get served pretty quickly. They have both inside and outside sitting area. Dress code might be enforced if sitting inside. They honestly didn't say anything to me personally but I saw their signs. I had the chicken tacos. They were okay, nothing out of the ordinary. This is a tourist trap. Its location is convenient but the food is not good and overpriced. For 3 not good fish tacos it was $25. I had better at other restaurants. It took forever to get help from our waitress. They make you pay for bottled water and refused to give us tap water. As a Mexican from Texas, I was not trying to have Mexican food while on vacation in Puerto Rico. However, the other restaurant had a long wait and there was seating available here outside in the middle of all of the action. All of the food was delicious. I don't even remember exactly what I ordered since my visit was a couple of weeks ago and it probably involved a few drinks but I just remember thinking there must be Mexicans working here because the food was delicious. We were eating a lot and I probably had tacos, but it doesn't matter. We had a variety of items. One thing I did laugh at was that the waiter brought me "jalapeño" sauce. After seeing so many positive yelp reviews about DT, I figured we were on the right track with our dinner selection tonight. Having finished the meal, I can only assume that most of these reviews were written by half drunk cruise goers who were excited for an escape from the slop being served up on these floating Golden Corrals. A group of five ordered 2 burritos, 2 chimichanga and a stuffed avocado. Nothing was exceptional. The burritos were core of the earth hot and not a single trace of char on the steak in my burrito or the chicken in my sons. Gave a very strong impression that the hardest working member of the kitchen staff was 'Chef Mike' AKA the microwave. By far the weirdest item was the entree ordered by my vegetarian daughter. She got the vegetable chimichanga. SO, here's the thing, the menu didn't have great descriptions of their dishes and there were some English/ Spanish issues at work with us and the waiter. But, there are some basics that you'd expect to find in a vegetarian dish at a Mexican restaurant, peppers, onions, beans, rice. This chimichanga had none of these things. When she cut into it, she was first greeted by a sprig of broccoli...odd...maybe it got lost in the kitchen and wandered into her dish. Next, she met a carrot...things were getting weirder....then, a cauliflower. Seriously, she was being greeted by all the elements of a Bird's Eye frozen vegetable medley. You can't convince me that they didn't run to Sam's Club and toss a few bags in the freezer. Definitely not worth the $15.00 we paid for it. Beyond that, no one was really excited about anything that was ordered, except the Coconut based hot sauce....that slapped! The other thing that was very off putting is the fact that we were given plastic utensils and Dasani bottled water. The entire bill was $121 for 5 entrees, 1 app and 5 bottles of Dasani water...not great value. If you're really hungry for something other than cruise ship food, get your Mexican fix at Taco Bell when you get home....you'll get a better meal at a better price...and this is coming from someone who hates Taco Bell. read more

Holy smokes, these tacos were great. Lots of sitting inside for a big group (which we were at 10 dudes). Don't get the chips and avocado, just get fried mozzarella for appetizers instead. I got three different types of tacos (Al pastor, steak, and spicy crab and fish). The crab and fish were 10/10, and the rest were solid too. Service was solid too. I don't give this place 0 stars because it's not an option. It's definitely a tourist trap and we should've known better but it's a taco spot so we assumed how bad can it be. Let's start with drinks ,I ordered a tamarindo margarita and my cousin whom I was with a passion fruit margarita. Both tasted like watered down sodas and had no salt on the rim. For $15 bucks each a better drink could've been made. We let the server know that we were unhappy with our drinks and we asked if we could switch them for 2 beers. He offered more juice to remedy the issue but said he couldn't really do anything about it. We said okay and waited for our tacos. Didn't offer water either.The tacos were a Taco Bell hard shell taco. Nothing special. I had the pork belly tacos, comes with fried beans and some shredded cheese in soft shell tacos. The pork belly is different too salty for me, not sure what sauce or seasoning they marinated it with but all I could tasted is the saltiness. I also ordered a strawberry margaritas, plain and barely tasted the alcoholic on it. My sister had the chicken quesadilla, with some chips, she liked that it's tasted fresh and they out plenty of meat and cheese. Nice little place in Old San Juan. They were still not allowing indoor eating on our visit here but had tables and chairs with umbrellas set up in a make shift patio. You had to battle with the birds to see who got the food first and there was a very sweet wild cat that kept trying to get a scratch behind the ear. The stuffed Avocado was amazing, apparently the avocados grow to be 2-3 times the size of the ones we typically get in California. Not a bad stop. Traditional Mexican food with an island flare that is worth the price you are paying for (not expensive but therefore not the best Mexican food I've ever had). They have a list of appointees that serve plenty well as main courses and what appeared to be a hefty bar with plenty of options. Service was fast (not something you always get on island time) and pleasant. Food came out fast and was hot and delicious. Willianys was a great server and would recommend eating here! Restaurant is located slightly off the main cruise port so it's a little bit quieter and a good atmosphere. We have passed by this place so many times walking to other restaurants in the area during our vacation but we never did stop until a few hours before our departure pick-up and we were thirsty and were looking for a place to hang out at. For once, this place was not crowded so we went in and I ordered a mojito (happy hour special for $7) and he ordered a local brew. My mojito was good. We then ordered some queso dip with chorizo and some taco al pastor. The queso dip was so thick and felt like it was only semi-melted, either that or it sat out for too long and was already in the cooling process when it was brought out. Also, I couldn't tell where the chorizo I paid extra for went! It was OK at best. Not really a true dip so I used my fork to top some of my chips with it. The flavor was nothing to write home about either. The tacos al pastor had some great flavors on their own but lacked any sort of heat, as in spicy heat. The 3 different sauces they brought out: coconut, jalapeño and some other one that looked like barbque sauce and tasted like one were also very tame. I liked the jalapeño the most for its flavor but it wasn't hot. Service was actually good and fairly fast. We had a couple more drinks after our initial one and our waiter was quick with them. The happy hour deal is pretty good for these parts so if you're only looking to have a drink or 2, then give it a try but the food, I have my reservations. read more
