I love the fence that Austex installed in my back yard. After installing raised beds for a vegetable garden it was quickly apparent that the dogs wouldn't stay out of the garden. They thought it was a new dirt bed for them to dig and roll in (not good for my seeds and new plants). In March, I needed my backyard enclosed to make a safe and secure playground for my Jack Russell. Early last year I contacted AusTex to replace a couple broken fence posts with galvanized steel ones. I've replaced posts on my own before, and while it's not difficult, I just didn't want to spend another weekend doing it. They returned my email quickly to set up an appointment. Due to work constraints, I could not be there for the estimate, so I just marked the posts that needed repair. After calling back to discuss the estimate and payment details, the job was scheduled and completed within a few days. The workmanship was excellent and the crew left the job site clean. Since I couldn't be there again while the work was done, my phone rep (sorry, I don't remember her name) also followed up to make sure I was satisfied. All in all, an excellent experience. This company put up a lot of junky fences in Pflugerville. Drive down and take a look at the rotted, falling over fences in the Brookfield neighborhood. Most of the homes are newer, as our was built in 2004, but the untreated wood is already deteriorating. The main posts are warped and rotted, which leads to huge sections of our fence falling over every few weeks. Maybe the fences were built to the specs of DL Horton, to cut costs, but if you're willing to take on a cheap, mass job, you should be ready for the criticism. The shocking part is that most of the junky fences are branded with the AusTex Fence signage. read more

We recently had an American adjustable louvered patio cover installed over our existing deck. Really like the high-quality, sturdy materials used by American, but the electrical control components were a little lacking for an outdoor in-the-weather installation. Austex did a bang-up job on the overall louvered roof installation, with their installer integrating the support system very well with our existing structures (support columns perfectly cut and integrated into an existing railing, and working with a smallish facia on our house for attachment of the house-side structure). Very neatly done. When it came to the aforementioned controllers, after a little discussion Austex offered to mount everything in a weatherproof enclosure at no extra cost. That was a level of service and customer satisfaction focus I had not seen in quite some time. Well done Austex! read more

Very frustrating experience with this company. Told by builder that this company installed my fence and it seems they disagree. I thought perhaps since they were a fence company and do repairs it wouldn't be that big of a deal. Was told to send photos which I did and even talked to them. They called back one afternoon and told me they would have me a quote the next morning. Waited until about 2 the next day to call them since I had not gotten a call from them for the quote and was told I would be called back. They say they called me but I have no missed calls on my phone from their number so I am not sure who they called. I called back again about 4:45 today and now they tell me they can't or won't do my fence. I have now wasted two days on this company and have to wait two more days to find another company since most are closed on the weekend. I am so not impressed with their customer service. I would not recommend this business unless you have time to waste. read more

Austex built all the fences in my neighborhood. I wanted a reliable builder who would give me a fair price for a deck I wanted in my back yard. I decided to contact them after reading a lot of horror stories about people who paid deck builders who took the money and ran or did a lousy job. An architect, Tom, came out to my home and looked at my little scribbled drawing, took measurements and chatted with me. By evening, he had emailed me a computer rendering of my deck and the way it would look in my back yard. I also asked Austex to add on another entrance to my back yard. Tom provided a bid for that as well. I chose Ipe wood because of all the good things I read about it. Austex gave me a fair price which I agreed to. I agreed to a 50/50 payment plan. Two things impressed me with Austex. First was their service. All the folks who work at Austex were friendly to speak with and were invested in making the jobs go well. I am a picky person. When I wanted adjustments to the deck and entrance after completion - and final payment, I never got any grief or the standard contractor cold shoulder. They guys came out, made adjustments and that was that. The second strength they had was their level of work. The deck I designed was simple, but I did ask for one end to have a curve to it. The builders were able to work with the very unflexible ipe wood and create the curve. The final result looks really clean and well constructed. I asked that the construction hide lighting and audio cables. That was done perfectly. I asked that access holes be drilled in specific areas. That was done too. I needed a special drain hole for a rain chain and that was done seamlessly. (I read online that Ipe was super hard to drill into, but they did it every cleanly) It was great to see these little things not screwed up when I came home from work. The crew understood what I wanted and just did it. If you want an honest company who will give you a fair price and a good build out -- these are your people. I would use them again. read more

We moved into our house when the fence was only three years old. Austex did the fence work for the whole subdivision, which wasn't even complete until late last year. The fences are cheap and crummy. We're having to replace all the posts because they are help in the ground with an unbelievably puny amount of concrete per post. You would be wise to look elsewhere for a better company. read more

Austex is probably ok if you are not picky and don't know much about fences. I had them replace 22 pickets and 4 cross members on a standard sized fence because they installed pieces that should have been trashed. They also broke a sprinkler, made a mess that I had them come back to clean, and gave me an attitude about coming back to fix their install. Do what I did, spray paint the bad boards orange so that they don't get used on the next house. You'll end up with a nice fence, but you really need to push them to finish the job nicely. read more

I have used Austex twice for iron fencing, and once to add a gate to existing fence, and they have been quick, responsive, and on schedule. The quality of the work has been impeccable. The pricing has been equal to or better than many of the small, local, guy and a truck companies. One big difference though, the guys with a truck want 50% cash up front. If they bail or delay, you are screwed. Austex accepts credit cards for deposits, which gives you great protection as a consumer. I was prepared to pay more for my last fencing project just to have the protection of credit card payments. Imagine how happy I was when Austex's bid was lower than the local fence guy! read more

Had our fence installed almost 2 months ago and while the fence looks good initially, after I've had a chance to really inspect things it's not all that great. The crew that came out and removed our old fence and set the new metal posts did a fantastic job. We also had a steel frame installed for our drive thru gate and that crew did a great job. The problem came when the nail crew shows up. Apparently that crew was hired from the street the day before without any fence building experience. They apparently didn't know how to use a tape measure or power saw correctly. The cuts are not squared and they are "dirty". It appears that they eyeballed some measurements and used that as their cutting line. Most of the pickets are different lengths ranging anywhere from 70.75 inches to 71.50 inches. The top of the fence looks straight but the bottom of the fence looks like a roller coaster. Now this might not be so bad on the line portion of the fence because you can always landscape around that and cover it, but on a gate that will be opening and closing it looks extremely bad. It looks so bad that the quality inspector that came out a week late noticed it immediately and wrote it up. They did come out and replace 2 of the pickets on the walk thru gate, but actually 5 of the pickets should have been replaced. I have the tools and expertise so instead of calling them back out I made the fixes myself. There are still a couple of fixes I need to complete. This is very disappointing because this was supposed to be a longstanding reputable fence installer but the quality on my fence project does not reflect their expertise. I was also considering adding a wooden deck onto our patio and some other fencing work but I will be researching other fence/deck builders for those projects. Bottom line is this. If you want a fence that looks well made and attractive, do your research and talk to neighbors that have had similar work done and get their opinion on their experience, read reviews on that company and hopefully you will have a good quality fence project when all is said and done. read more

We originally got a quote from Austex when we were having a fence built but decided to go with the individual guy who had a lower price. The lower price was a big part of our decision but so was the thought that it was a good job for a hard working guy. Unfortunately, that was a huge mistake. I called the other guy's referrals and heard glowing reviews but he just didn't have enough experience with fences to do a job that would last. Less than two years after having our fence installed our gate just didn't work anymore. This was after having the original builder come out to do like five repairs. The problem was that with his lack of experience putting up fences with gates, he built a gate that was too big to last and it didn't even have a strong frame. After learning our lesson about not always going with the cheapest option and finding a specialized company, we called Austex to fix our fence. They did a great job and came out when they said they would, finished in the time frame quoted and were pleasant to work with. We ended up paying more in the end than if we had just gone with Austex to begin with. Lesson learned. read more

Of the three estimates I got, Austex was about $1000 less than the other two. (Like other reviewers, I also got the special with free take down and haul away of our old fence.) I was nervous going with a company I found on the Internet with no personal reference, and I didn't think to check Yelp before hiring them. Luckily it turned out great, and we are very satisfied with the work. The fence looks SO good compared to the ramshackle pine fence we had before. Now if we put our home on the market we won't have a terrible fence to turn off buyers. Service was fast. A few days after I paid the deposit, the old fence was taken down quickly and new posts were installed, then the next day the new cedar fence went up in just a few hours. My contact at Austex was Neil, and he was responsive to my questions before and during the process and called afterward to make sure we were satisfied. Terry in the office was easy to work with regarding payments as well. I didn't catch the names of any of the people on the work crews but they were quiet and polite. I gave them water and Sprite since it was hot and they were appreciative. When there were minor issues (the crew hit an unmarked water pipe putting in the gate) they were quickly resolved at no cost to me. I'd give 4.75 stars if I could. The only negative thing, if I'm being really picky, was that the fence was a bit high off the ground in a few places--we have a little dog so are particularly sensitive to gaps at the bottom. But with our rock hard, uneven lot, I don't think there's anything that could be done to avoid that; the fence is perfectly straight. And $12 of sand from Lowe's easily fixed those few problem areas. All in all, I love the way the new fence looks and smells, and am thrilled to have a very solid fence that my dogs can't get out of. Would use this company again, especially if their prices are always 2/3 of their competitors'. read more

He also described various types of wood available for use and helped with my decision making. The installation crew came out at the scheduled time. They removed my old fence and installed posts the first day. The next day they came out, built the rails and installed the fence. I had one gate built and the crew followed my request for the size of the gate. They were very professional and easy to work with. I was very impressed with Austex as they came out to re-inspect their work a couple of weeks later to make sure I was satisfied. They replaced two boards that may have caused some problems in the future. I was given a survey to fill out and was assured that the information was read and helped Austex serve future customers. Long-winded comment: If you don't read to the end, know that I am very pleased with the work and cost of the job Austex did for me. You should probably skip the rest. I haven't inspected the job, yet. However, everything leading up to the start up was handled thoughtfully and expertly by Austex. I don't expect any problem. I also like to provide written remarks about every kind of service person I deal with when I receive good service. I own 6 pieces of residential property in Hyde Park and West Austin, and consider myself a pretty saavy guy when it comes to contracting maintenance and repair service. I tend to use "Old Austin" contractors that have been in business for decades, many of which have sold or closed. Over the years Austex has done a few jobs for me, 250 feet of typical 6 foot cedar fencing for instance (I mean how often do you need fencing replaced?), including demo and hauling. I have owned a specialized facility construction company (building ultra-clean manufacturing fabrication spaces) since 1985, and have an excellent idea of what is necessary to do even such small projects. On this job, I created some problems by missing an appointment, not seeing to it that the resident unlocked the gate when necessary, etc., but in spite of my stupidity, they maintained a friendly and professional attitude, especially given the amount of attention that was necessary for what I consider(ed) to be a relatively small job (60 feet typical 6 foot cedar). I was pleased from the very start by the attitudes of everyone I dealt with from start to end: Neil Kreitzer, who was considerate and professional, and gave me a fast, well-considered bid and made sure he answered any questions I had. Wel didn't discuss my cost expectations because I didn't want to, but l thought his quote was extremely reasonable. I did not have any other bids, hired them on the spot (based on their reputation, Neil's presentation, and price), and paid my deposit on the spot; Peggy Blend, who scheduled the services necessary (such as utility line location) and construction (Austex scheduled the work with adequate notice and reasonable wait time) - Peggy helped make the job move along well, and stayed in touch with me; and Reina Flower, who checked in at the end of the job, and provided a quick and correct invoice. Once begun, the job took a very reasonable amount of time to finish. I need a serious repair and restoration on a 60 year old 35'x10', semi-covered, heavy wood, deck cantilevered out from the back of a house, extending on double 2x12s 12 feet out from from the back wall and 12 feet above the lot below. It will be complicated and not cheap. The first bid I will ask for will be from Austex. I expect I will be happy. Obviously, I clearly am impressed by all aspects of the service Austex provides and highly recommend them for your consideration for fence work. I can't imagine you won't be happy. My fence got completed a day late due to rain, which was understandable, and the the crew that put the new fence in were quick and did a great job. The company did follow up with me on my concerns regarding their customer service (specifically communication) and did seem sincere in addressing the issue. Ok I waited all day and at 5pm I called the head office to figure out were they were for our appointment. They told me to call t"Tom" that took our order. I called him and he told me I should call the office. I was like no, they told me to call you. He checked and called me back and said they would not make it out today but he would try to get them to hit us first thing in the morning. The next morning at 10am I called the office. The assured me they would be there no later than 1pm. Guess what, 5pm rolls up and no one at my house yet. I called Tom and he got some guys to come at 6pm. They were "good" and "skilled". Nice guys however I couldn't check the fence out till morning due to them finishing at sunset. I have a few small issues so I asked Tom the next day to have a door adjusted and one board replaced. Guess what, they came unannounced at my house banging away on my fence at 630 in the morning waking up neighbors. When I called they said yet again "sorry" and said "since your up, can we get the other half of the payment". Honestly I just wanted some type of coordination and communication. They could keep their apologies and respect my time along with my money. I do not have issues with delays, it happens, just call me. The fence looks good, so I gave them two stars. Complete nightmare to coordinate and communicate with. read more

We just used Austex to replace the simple post/rail/picket fence at our home north of Austin. We got several quotes, and the Austex folks were competitive and professional. Scheduling the fence replacement was quick after we decided to go with Austex, and the work was performed on time, as promised. So far, everything looks good. The quality of the materials is good, the holes for the posts (that I saw) were dug to an appropriate depth, and the gate they put in seems quite a bit more solid than the original gate which was replaced. Overall, I'd recommend Austex for a fence replacement project. read more
