The customer service at the Mac Works up north pales in comparison to the one downtown although it's the same people. It wreaked of shadiness when I walked in. I needed my logic board replaced and I wanted to back up my harddrive. They tried to say they would give me a way deal compared to the Apple store. He asked me what Apple was going to charge me and I told him and then he said he'd do it for less on replacing the logic board but then just added more to the cost of backing up my hard drive and it was the same price. I went with it to save the drive back to the Apple store. Then I get my lap top back after 10 days and it punks out on me 2 days later so I go back as I'm within my 90 day warranty. I walk in and tell them the problem and ask them if they can test other things like the battery, charger, etc to rule out those problems. They say it'll cost $60 and they can rush diagnose it. Really? They are just standing around, I just drop 500+, and you can't even plug it in and pretend like you know how to do your job? Finally I complain about how I should have gone somewhere else & one guy decides to stop playing a computer game behind the desk and hook it up. They then say they will call me when it's ready and they fail to call me for 4 to 5 weeks so I call them and they say it's been there for some time and they left multiple messages on my phone. Basically it ate up most of my warranty time. Maybe my phone is broken and not receiving some messages? Needless to say I'm not going back. UPDATE 3/1/12 - So my computer finally gave out so I took it back and told them that I knew there was a problem all along and that now my warranty was gone because they had kept it for that extended period of time. They made up for everything by saying they would send it back to Apple. I said on the condition that they have to tell Apple that there is something wrong with it and that they won't let them return it without fixing. They did just that and even Apple tried to return, saying there was nothing wrong with it, but they told them they have to fix it. So now it's fixed and I got my money's worth from the first time I paid for repairs! I'm now going to sell my 2 laptops and by a new one from Mac Works. They showed me that they care about their customers and really stuck with me and making my experience positive in the end. That is deserving of bumping them from 1 star to 4! And it keeps me as a customer. read more

My track pad started acting up today and I couldn't work with my laptop on the fritz like that. Apple had a long wait and no available appointments, so I decided to give these guys a try today instead. It took about 20 mins for them to get me in and out of the door. What had me worried might be the end of a loving 4 year relationship with my Mac book pro turned out to be a quick easy fix that they didn't even charge me for! I spilled coffee on my computer but I was pretty sure the damage was minimal due to how much coffee I spilled and where I spilled it. I called Apple and they told me to take it to Mac Works anyway. Mac Works told me that they would open it up, clean it out, and let me know what the damage was in 2 - 3 days. They gave me the impression that I really needed to get my computer in there ASAP because they would dry it out for me. Even though I thought my computer was fine, I wanted to be on the safe side so I took it in without turning it on or checking anything out myself. I called 2 days after I took it in to check on progress and they told me they hadn't touched it yet. I was surprised since I thought they would have opened it up to dry it out immediately since that is why they told me to bring it in right away. 20 minutes after I called to check on it they called back to say it was working just fine and that'll be $48. I knew how much it would cost before I took it in, so that wasn't really a surprise to me. However they certainly made it seem like I would get a lot more out of my $48 than I got. I'm glad my computer is okay, but I just think $48 for less than 20 minutes of work is a little steep especially since they didn't clean it up right away as they led me to believe they would do. Oh, and they gave it back to me with coffee droplets all over it and a big coffee smear on the screen. Makes me wonder if they actually opened it up and cleaned out the inside. The below details the events that followed: Austin Macworks Employee: what can I do for you? Me: I had a 3:30 appointment to get a battery replaced. AME: did you call? Me: no, I came in last week and you guys ran diagnostics and said I needed a new battery. AME: are you in the system? Me: I have an appointment so I must be? AME: (goes in the back for several minutes, comes back out) you're not even in the system and we don't have a battery. Me: I was here last week and made an appointment for today at 3:30, how is it possible that I'm not in the system? If being here in person and having diagnostics run, and then making an appointment doesn't get you in the system, how DO you get in the system? AME: well.... I can PUT you in the system? Absolutely the worst customer service experience of my life. I made an appointment online through Apple which was four days out. When I show up no one even looks up. I go up to a guy and say I have an appointment and he responds "you don't need an appointment." He seemed high, and after an uncomfortable amount of time had me fill out a form. He took the form. I sat there awhile.. I finally asked " it that it?" He said yes the phone will be fixed in 7 days. During the following week my son is hospitalized due to the flu. I call them nine business days after drop off, leave a message. I call the next day. They inform me that the iCloud username or password is wrong and nothing has been done on the phone. My son is out of the ICU at the point it still can't go to school and would really like contact with his friends. I ask to speak to the manager. The guy I'm talking to says it doesn't matter because the username and password was wrong, but WHY DIDN'T THEY CALL ME AS SOON AS THEY FIGURED THAT OUT?!?! By now I've wasted 12 days?? I finally teach the manager and he is incredibly rude. He continually cuts me off, raises his voice. I told him I would write a bad review and he said he didn't care. I had it on speaker and my husband heard him yelling at me. He grabbed the phone and told the manager he would be picking up the phone immediately. I took the phone to Apple at Barton Creek and it was fixed in 2 hours. I've read other reviews about this place and it seems these guys have a problem with women. Apple should not certify them to fix their products. read more

They are amazing!!!! Every time I use their services I'm amazed at how simple they make everything seem. I had them overhaul my iMac and reorganize the OS on different drives. When they set it up, they said nobody has ever asked us to do this. But they did it. Then I ran out of space and needed them to undo what they had done and boom. Fixed. I used to own a tech company and I outsourced all of my repairs to them. I've never been let down there. I work with José a lot and he knows what he's talking about. They were great. I had purchased some extra RAM off amazon, and upon the Apple Store's recommendation, I brought it to Austin MacWorks to get it installed. I asked if they had a goLocal discount, which they didn't, but they gave me a discount anyways! The RAM was installed in about 5-10mins (I literally walked to McDonalds next door and back, and they were done). I kept trying to pay the full amount since they didn't actually have a discount through goLocal, but they wouldn't let me. My computer works great, it was super easy getting it done, and they were really nice. read more

Reasonably priced, I got quoted via email and allowed me to price hunt around. They verified the parts via my serial number before having to show up. Took less than 10 minutes to have them install a new battery and update my 2009 laptop from 2GB RAM to 8GB. Saved me about $1800 opposed to buying a new laptop. I took my Macbook Pro (late 2011) version here to get its cracked glass (not screen) repaired. They quoted me 3 days, but it took 8 due to them ordering the wrong part. When I received my Macbook, everything looked OK, but I noticed the screen coming loose at the bottom as I shut the screen. This has been happening for about a month now, and I've just ordered double-sided tape so I can do the job I paid them $300 to do. It would have been easier for me to buy the materials (less than $100) and do it myself. Very disappointed. read more

We were told by Apple that they should charge no more than $130 for a battery. They charged $200! The battery only costs $60. Why was it so expensive when only took 10 minutes to fix??? I didn't have an appointment ahead of time, but they immediately started working on my computer to see if there was a quick fix or if it needed to be checked in. Good - they fixed my macbook pro. Bad - They said they would call in 2-3 days. I called them after 7 days. They said the $49 diagnostic fee would be waived if they repaired the machine. It was not. When I asked what was wrong, they said they couldn't find anything wrong after running some software. When I picked it up, they said they replaced the battery-for $200. I never leave bad reviews because my business is also in service but this place was so bad. This is by far the worst customer service experience i have ever had basically from beginning to end. Staff not personable at all. I went to get my phone battery replaced. It took me calling them back TWICE to receive notification that it was ready. They claimed my phone wasn't receiving voicemails but i got no other calls or emails. Once i got there They said it would take 1 hour to repair and it took 2. I had a newborn waiting at home so this is crucial information for me. The guy working was rude and not helpful. Overall this place is terrible and i would not recommend. Believe all of the bad reviews on this place. I do not understand how they stay in business or how Apple allows them to be associated with their company. I set an appointment through Apple to have an iPhone battery replaced. It took awhile for them to find me in their system and then they told me that they didn't have any iPhone batteries in stock. They said I could order one and it would be in within about a week. What is the point of making an appointment to come in to have a battery replaced if they don't stock batteries? I had a specific time to come into their store and they knew exactly what I needed. A battery replacement on an iPhone has to be their most common repair. Why wouldn't an "Authorized" Apple repair location have batteries in stock? Why wouldn't they order one for me when I originally made my appointment instead of waiting for me to be physically in the store? Why wouldn't they contact me before allowing me to drive over half an hour to their location and let me know they didn't have batteries in stock so it was a waste of time coming in at all for my scheduled appointment? About as unprofessional, uninspired and uninvolved as it gets. Socially awkward computer geeks are understandable, but their staff took it to a new low. Walked in and was greeted by a grunt. Only a grunt. The simple repair was to take two business days. After numerous phone calls and a full week I was told it was being worked on, but the guy left for a while and they would call when it was finished. Days later, having never heard back, I stopped in and was greeted by a "What?" My repair was finally completed and so am I - with ever using them. Was referred here by Apple to replace battery in Mac Book Pro. They over charged me $129 for a battery that is half that price on Amazon. Then charged me $50 to put the battery in when it was only 10 screws to remove the back cover and plug in new battery. Such a rip off. $200 for a $100 job. Brought my new Macbook Pro in for a repair to the headphone jack. They were very friendly and even took me in the back on another visit to get an update on the repair status. After having the jack fixed by replacing the logic board i took the computer home. It wasn't until I tried to video chat with family over the holiday that i found that the bulit in microphone was hooked up. I brought the computer back as this surely was just a simple oversight and left the computer there as i had to bring it on my lunch break. I returned to the store to pick up my computer once more ,testing everything out to make sure it was working properly. I left again happy that my computer was fixed. A few days ago i went to load a dvd in the disk drive and was told that there was none installed. To my surprise i went to the system profiler and found this to be true as the dvd drive has now also been not connected which had no business even being unhooked. If it was necessary to be then it should have been connected back as i can't imagine this not being an obvious issue before closing up the computer. Needless to say i will not be using this company again and will recommend that anyone else be ware of them as well. The lack of thoroughness is staggering. read more

I do not believe they have any integrity. Period. Thank you for your response. The computer was working just fine. There was no damage to the logic board. The hard drive is plugged in, I checked that when I got it back from you, but it is missing the brace that holds it still. So it is rattling inside the computer. I can migrate the data, that was not the issue. The issue was that you told my friend that I would not be able to migrate the data. The computer was given to you in functional condition and returned to me non-functional. That is really all that matters. Had a problem with my MacBook and was advised this was a local spot I could take my computer to be looked at. Big mistake going here. The diagnosis is 50$ and it turns out the diagnosis and repair they performed didn't work. Although they ok over a week to look at my laptop. Go to Apple Store directly. You will get a more clear answer and don't have to pay for diagnosis. I ended up taking my computer home after they fixed it and it broke again within an hour. No testing no support. read more

I had a water spill for my macbook so I took mine in for diagnostic. They said even with my warranty, the diagnostic ($49) won't be covered. It took more than a week for them to call me back to tell me what was damaged. When they called me, they charged me about $900 for one repair and up to $1500 for data repair through another party. It was going to cost me over $2400 total to repair simple water spill damage. I went for a second opinion at UT campus computer store. They said diagnostic is covered under my warranty. Once they figured out what was going on, they gave me different diagnostic in terms of damage and were able to fix everything under my warranty. My 2013 MacBook pro's screen stated messing up, vertical lines appeared and color distortion at the bottom. Being as the laptop was under warranty and that I did not want to go to the domain, I went on apples website and saw Authorized Repair shop Austin MacWorks. So I headed down with the laptop and walked in. I was greeted by someone working at a workbench. I told him the issue, opened up the laptop and instantly he said "Did you drop this?" no. "Do you have kids or pets that could have knocked this over?" no. Well this will not be covered under warranty, because you can see the screen is messed up and apple will deny it. I had never dropped the laptop, there were no scratches, dents or anything else that would even suggest that. I said, well that sucks they wont honor their warranty... How much is another screen? He said hold on. Brings in another guy from the back, guy says instantly again "ohhh man, those are really expensive... like $1200 or so." That sucks, its a company laptop. So I said thanks for the 30 seconds of help and left. I took the laptop back to work, and had my IT guy bring it to the apple store at the domain. Fully covered by apple and the part was actually $600. So I do not know if they just didn't want to work on it for warranty reasons, or they just do not know what in the world they are talking about. But if you're wanting warranty work, do not take your Mac here. read more

I turned to Yelp to find a place to fix our Mac in October and I chose Austin MacWorks. I was very pleased for a multitude of reasons: 1) The estimate was spot-on 2) Work was completed within 24 hours 3) They went above and beyond to fix cosmetic issues with my 4.5 yr old laptop free of charge 4) Pricing was fair for hardware required 5) They updated my OS for free. We will definitely return to MacWorks should another issue with our Mac stuff! read more

Rude, sarcastic and impatient customer service. Avoid if you don't want an upsetting and stressful experience. When compared to dealing with Mac genius folks at the Mac store or other computer repair folks around town who are generally friendly and helpful these guys fail in comparison - they are overall rude and not effective at repairs or knowledgeable either - no redeeming factor. Sincerely regret ever dealing with them - massive headache. It's well worth waiting for a Macgenius appointment or going elsewhere with better ratings. "Authorized Mac" title doesn't mean anything. Avoid. UPDATE: An employee wrote back here that he was "horrified" with my experience when he was one of the ones involved - I'm so glad in the end I went elsewhere and people actually helped me and were professional - too bad I wasted that time and money dealing with these folks. I had tough experience here with my iMac. The Apple store at the Domain referred me to them with a bad a hard drive. The Apple Store people had plugged it in and the monitor was working fine, just a bad hard drive. Macworks charged me $160 to remove my hard drive and try to see if they could get any data off it. They called and said no luck with the hard drive but also that my monitor was not working. When I went to pick it up they basically said tough luck. read more

This review is a bit belated. About a year back I decided to try a Mac. I looked these guys up, saw the positive reviews and thought I would try them out. The guy who greeted me was very pleasant. Since I do IT for a living, I asked very specific questions, IE maximum amount of ram, why no OSX installation disc, etc. While not entirely Mac savvy, I knew enough to ask the right questions. After hearing all this I decided to buy a late 2008 Macbook. I was advised that they were installing OSX off of a volume copy and that once I registered an iTunes account I would be able to reinstall later should I decide too. Fast forward 6 months I decided I wanted a newer/more powerful Macbook. I try to download OSX from Apple, does not work. I also start looking at the value of my current Macbook on Ebay and find that I overpaid by about $250. I'll get back to this in a minute. I went back to Austin MacWorks and ask for help to reinstall OSX and am told that they charge $70-$80 for a reinstall. I find the same sales guy and explain to him our previous conversation regarding my registration with iTunes and the ability to download OSX, he claims we never had that conversation. Our discussion gets heated fast, and finally the only way they will reinstall OSX for free is if I promise to never come back to the store. Now I am not without fault. I should have researched Macbook values before going into the store. I do know that generally Apple products hold their value longer. They have too to justify the higher initial cost. It has now been a year and my $870 Macbook is worth $450 at best on eBay. I will be lucky to get $400 on Craigslist. My goal with this review is to let you know my experience with this store. As far as I am concerned they are very dishonest. They purposely mislead even the somewhat informed just to get another sale. Yes, I realize they are there to keep their doors opened. But I can tell you without reservation I will not only never visit this store again, but I have been telling everyone I know about their misleading behaviors. Treat me well, I'll be your biggest salesperson. Treat me bad, I'll be your biggest detractor. To summarize: Overpriced products.
